After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 27
Chapter 27: Yu Qing
For her second check-up, Beige took Weishu to Dr. Shen Lan’s office. Shen Lan was a busy doctor with many students to mentor. She was annoyed that Beige had called her over to make a fuss about a simple bone fracture and wanted to throw a brick at her.
“To check for a brain tumor, you need a scan. Same for a bone fracture. You can’t just call me over and expect me to look at you with my naked eyes. I’m not a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor who can diagnose by observation, listening, and palpation, can I?” Shen Lan ranted, pointing to the door and telling them to go through the proper procedures.
After the two of them came back with the test results, Shen Lan took a drink of water and carefully reviewed them.
“The tumor has shrunk a bit. Although it’s not obvious, the trend is positive. We can continue to observe it,” Shen Lan said.
Beige looked at the new scan and compared it to the old one. She couldn’t tell the difference. “Are your eyes microscopes? What’s the difference between these two?” Beige challenged.
Shen Lan gave a mocking smile. “You’re not a doctor.”
Beige frowned. “If the change isn’t visible to the naked eye, then how long will it take for the tumor to be absorbed at this rate?” With a tumor that large in her brain, it felt like a ticking time bomb. Beige was worried sick every day.
Shen Lan glanced at Weishu, feeling a lack of understanding. “The person it’s happening to isn’t even worried. Why are you so anxious for an exact time? It could be as little as six months or as long as three years. It also depends on her recovery.”
Weishu pursed her lips and smiled, speaking up for Beige. “She’s just worried, that’s all.”
“I don’t think so. I think she’s a glutton for punishment. She doesn’t care for the amnesiac you; she insists on you getting your memory back…” Shen Lan was running her mouth. She suddenly realized that what she was saying was inappropriate and immediately stopped, abruptly changing the subject. “Anyway, your arm is almost healed. Take more calcium and be more active, but be careful not to lift heavy things for the next six months.”
With that, Shen Lan grabbed her teacup and left, saying she was going to change the tea leaves.
Weishu turned to look at Beige, her gaze questioning. “Do you like the me before I lost my memory more? Do you think I’m incomplete without my memories?”
After Shen Lan’s reminder, Weishu realized that Beige really did care if she regained her memory, especially in the days right after she woke up. Does she dislike the way I am now?
Beige wanted to say that she had never thought about it that way, not for a single second. “Shen Lan is a little crazy. Don’t take what she says to heart. What I care about is when the tumor will be absorbed. It’s so big, and it’s in your brain. If it expands and puts pressure on your nerves, how dangerous would that be? As for getting your memory back, it’s not a priority. You are you. You are still you, even without your memory.”
Beige’s logic was airtight. Weishu hadn’t even had time to get too emotional before Beige’s blunt confession left her speechless. Weishu quietly said, “Oh,” and then, “Okay, since you said so much, I’ll let you off the hook.”
Beige was speechless.
Beige could explain herself, but that didn’t mean she wanted to. Thinking of Shen Lan, Beige gritted her teeth in anger and went after her. Shen Lan was in the break room, leisurely sipping tea and looking at the view. When she heard Beige’s footsteps, she didn’t even turn her head.
“What do you mean, you’re trying to sow discord in front of Weishu? You’ve got some nerve,” Beige said.
Shen Lan poured Beige a cup of tea in a disposable paper cup. “Drink some tea and relax. Why are you so anxious?”
Beige said, “I’m not drinking that. What kind of low-grade tea is this?”
Shen Lan turned her head to look at her, not engaging in small talk, and got straight to the point. “Tell me. Why has the atmosphere between you and Weishu changed again? I remember last time, someone said she wanted to settle scores with her.”
“You shouldn’t take what I say out of context. That’s a misrepresentation.” Beige irritably snatched the teacup and held it in her palm. After a dozen seconds, she spoke slowly. “I think that since Weishu doesn’t remember anything now, we might as well live as she said, without any bad feelings, and just try to get along for a while. After all, the two of us have never been so harmonious before.”
“Still lost in the sweetness of love, huh?” Shen Lan sighed, as if she had expected this ending all along. “In front of Weishu, you can’t even hold out for a few days.”
Beige took a sip of the tea. The water was bitter and made her frown. “What kind of tea is this… This isn’t surrender. I’m trying to get along with her. As for how far we can go, we’ll have to take it one step at a time.”
Shen Lan knew Beige’s personality. To put it nicely, she was determined and unyielding. To put it badly, she was stubborn and narrow-minded. This kind of stubbornness was fully directed at Weishu. She wouldn’t let go of even a small chance. What’s more, Weishu was a simple white flower who knew nothing now.
“So what are you going to do? Use a gentle offensive to make her fall for you? And then devour her? Make her unable to live without you, from the inside out, from her heart to her body?” Shen Lan threw out an extremely tempting suggestion.
Beige stared at the rippling tea in the cup, her eyes darkening. “Shen Lan,” Beige’s tone was a little cold, but still calm and restrained. She looked up and met Shen Lan’s gaze. Both of them could see the expression in each other’s eyes. She said seriously, “You don’t need to test me like this. I won’t let myself get trapped in my own selfish desires and become the kind of person I hate. I know what I’m doing with Weishu. Whatever she wants, I’ll go along with it.”
To cage the person you love and turn them into a secret lover who only has eyes for you. For many people, this idea would be very tempting, like the luscious red apple in the Garden of Eden, tempting people to pick it. But Beige was not a vulgar person. She loved Weishu. She loved her complete dependence and pure kindness, but she also loved her tattered and cold demeanor after weathering the storms, and she loved her tenacity to fight and rely on herself, to hold up her own sky with her frail body.
Weishu was never a goldfinch that needed to be caged, nor was she a dodder plant that could only grow by relying on a host. She was a self-sufficient tree and an incorruptible monument.
Shen Lan looked at her for a dozen seconds, then looked away first. She smiled and patted Beige’s shoulder. “I’m just joking. Don’t be so serious. Drink a few more sips of tea to calm down.”
Beige instinctively took another sip, and her face crinkled again. “Ugh, what is this?”
“Bitter gourd tea,” Shen Lan said, looking at her strangely. “Is your sense of smell okay? You can’t tell?”
Beige was speechless.
Shen Lan walked out with a large teacup and returned to her office, where she wrote a prescription for Weishu for some traditional Chinese medicine to clear heat and promote bl00d circulation. “Drink one dose every three days. Don’t drink it before or during your period.” After thanking her, Beige and Weishu left with the prescription.
After they left, Weishu followed behind, glancing at the figure in front of her. She asked in a low voice, “What kind of secrets did you two talk about for so long?” She wasn’t a fool. There was a trash can and a water dispenser in the office. Shen Lan didn’t need to leave to throw away the tea leaves. Beige followed her out, and they were gone for over ten minutes. They deliberately avoided her, which meant they were probably talking about her, right?
“Nothing. We were just bickering, and then Shen Lan tricked me into drinking bitter gourd tea. It’s so disgusting. How can a plant like bitter gourd exist? How did it get into human food and survive for so many years without going extinct?”
Weishu’s steps stopped. The way she looked at Beige was as if there were stars twinkling in her eyes. Beige turned to look at her, a little confused. Why is she looking at me like that? Did I do something amazing?
“That’s the first time you’ve said such a long and interesting sentence,” Weishu said, both shocked and surprised. She skipped in front of Beige, her face breaking into a smile. “It’s so fun. Say a few more things.”
Perhaps it was because she had just finished talking to Shen Lan, but Beige couldn’t help but use metaphors and sarcasm when talking to Weishu. She would be witty and playful when she was with friends, but in front of Weishu, she was a different person, speaking and acting very properly and never making jokes. That’s why Weishu was so surprised.
Beige’s cheeks flushed slightly. She pursed her lips. “Say what?”
“Give me a brief summary of your conversation,” Weishu said, setting a trap without changing her expression.
Beige’s body stiffened for a moment. She saw the playful look in Weishu’s eyes and uncomfortably cleared her throat. “Well, we talked about… we talked about your tumor, and then we discussed how to get along with a former lover with amnesia.”
Weishu narrowed her eyes, her tone a little faint. “Did you come to a conclusion?”
Weishu’s alarm bells were ringing. She had been able to tell last time that Shen Lan had a problem with her. Of course, since she woke up, many signs pointed to the fact that her relationship with Beige had problems, but this was between the two of them. Even Yu Qing, who had been urging her to treat Beige better from the very beginning, didn’t talk them down. Instead, she had always supported and wished them a happily ever after. Beige’s friend wouldn’t say bad things about her behind her back… would she?
Beige’s eyes darted around, looking at the sky, the ground, and the ribbon on Weishu’s shoulder. She avoided her gaze for half a minute before looking into Weishu’s eyes. Her gaze was a little hesitant. “The conclusion is that… I want the two of us to just feel our way and live on.”
She really didn’t know how to treat Weishu. She wanted to keep her distance, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Just when she was finally able to maintain a calm state, Weishu kept pushing her, step by step, leaving her with no way to retreat. The fact that the long-dead Doris had come back to life had reignited Beige’s jealousy, and she could no longer lie to herself. She wanted to have Weishu all to herself, whether by a gentle offensive or other means. She just wanted Weishu.
She could put aside the things she couldn’t figure out. She could put aside her inner turmoil. She had spent a long time working through her own thoughts. Now, she just wanted to be by Weishu’s side.
Weishu finally dropped her suspicious look. “That’s more like it. You should solve problems and live a good life. That’s what matters.”
Beige gave a helpless smile. “Okay, whatever you say. Can we go get the medicine now? Yu Qing’s plane lands in five hours.”
Yu Qing’s flight had a layover in Russia. Russian flights were always early, never late. She’d probably land in less than five hours. So, they got the medicine, went out for a meal, came back to pick up the medicine the hospital had prepared, and then went to the airport. The timing was perfect.
Weishu picked up a cardboard box on the way and drew a colorful lizard on it with a marker.
Beige was looking for a place to park. She glanced at it and asked casually, “Does Sonsong still live with Yu Qing?”
Weishu hummed in acknowledgment without looking up.
The brief exchange ended. Beige was stunned for a moment. She immediately slowed down the car and looked at Weishu in shock. “You remember Sonsong?”
Weishu was confused by her question. She pointed to the lizard on the cardboard. “Are you talking about this? Yu Qing showed it to me on a video call. She has a lot of pets. A lizard, a white-legged spider, a sugar glider, a Call duck, and a dairy ferret. But not long ago, her golden hamster died. Yu Qing was sad for a long time. After it was cremated, she put its ashes in a small jar. That video even got hundreds of thousands of likes overseas.”
