After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 28
Chapter 28: Doris
Yu Qing, with the wrap still in her mouth, turned around. When she saw the person, she immediately put the wrap down and gave a sweet, well-behaved smile. “Hello, Third Aunt.”
Beige, who had been sitting up straight, tensed slightly. Her lips were pursed. Chen Xiaoqian was carrying a new designer handbag and looked refined and wealthy all over. When she saw Weishu and Yu Qing, a joyful smile appeared on her face.
Chen Xiaoqian walked straight over and sat down, looking at Yu Qing, then at Weishu. She said with a smile, “It really is you two. Xiaoqing, why didn’t you tell your elders you were coming back? How long are you staying? Do you want to come to my house and play?”
Yu Qing sat obediently, answering every question. “I’m back for work. I won’t be staying for long.” “I won’t trouble you, Third Aunt. I can just stay with Weishu.”
Chen Xiaoqian held Yu Qing’s hand and chattered on for a while. Then she turned to Weishu and started nagging. “And you, you’re always making me worry. Third Aunt wanted to take you abroad to get treatment, but that troublesome Beige wouldn’t let me.”
Weishu looked up, her expression helpless. It wasn’t that Beige was unwilling. The doctor had said that because of the tumor in her brain, it wasn’t a good idea for her to travel by plane, let alone a long-distance ship.
Beige put her cup down at the right moment to remind Chen Xiaoqian, “Third Aunt, I’m right here.” Can you please not act like I’m invisible?
Weishu let out a soft sigh and tugged on Beige’s shirt. Beige looked down at the small gesture, said nothing, and didn’t speak again. Since Chen Xiaoqian held the status of an elder, Weishu couldn’t say anything, and it was even more inconvenient for Beige. Besides, Chen Xiaoqian didn’t like her, but she was flawless when it came to Weishu. Beige remembered her kindness toward Weishu and never contradicted her to her face.
Chen Xiaoqian gave Beige a disdainful glance, then immediately changed the subject, chattering about Weishu and Yu Qing. “You two aren’t little girls anymore. Xiaoqing has a boyfriend…”
Yu Qing suddenly interjected, “Third Aunt, you’re getting younger and younger. Mom was just saying the other day that she hasn’t seen you in a long time.”
Chen Xiaoqian immediately broke into a big smile. “Help me send a message to your parents. I’ll go see them abroad when I have time, and they’re welcome to come back to China to visit.”
Weishu tried to speak up several times, but Yu Qing stopped her with a look. In the end, Yu Qing and Chen Xiaoqian managed to cheer her up and send her on her way. “If you had spoken up, Third Aunt would never have stopped talking,” Yu Qing said, patting Weishu on the shoulder.
Beige and Weishu stood at the mall entrance, watching Yu Qing smile as she saw Chen Xiaoqian into her car. Then, in perfect unison, they turned to look at Yu Qing with expressionless faces. Yu Qing, seeing the two of them standing behind her like ghosts, was startled. “What are you two doing? Haunting me?”
Beige said casually, “You and Third Aunt seem to be on good terms.”
Yu Qing shrugged naturally. “She’s good to us younger ones. We all got spanked as kids, but Third Aunt never did. She’d protect us for no reason.”
Weishu was a little confused. “But why does she act like that toward Beige? The first time I woke up in the hospital, she said so many bad things about her.”
Yu Qing’s eye twitched. “…Maybe Third Aunt only likes her own kids?”
“Third Aunt thinks I’m poor,” Beige said without hiding anything. She stroked Weishu’s head, patiently explaining, “When I was chasing you, my salary was less than 10,000 yuan.”
Weishu gave a soul-searching question. “But you’re really rich now. Rich enough to buy Shu Se. Rich enough to take care of me.”
Beige thought about it. “Maybe she still thinks I’m unreliable.”
Yu Qing nodded. “When we were little, Third Aunt didn’t like Beige. She was always wearing her gardening clothes, and her raincoat and boots were always covered in mud. And she was a lot taller than you. Standing next to you, she looked like a bully.”
Weishu blinked, suppressing a smile, and said calmly, “Then wouldn’t I be a heroine who bullies the bully every day?”
Beige agreed with her. She smiled softly. “Yeah. Little bully.”
A person’s prejudice is like a mountain. Chen Xiaoqian had a thousand reasons to look down on Beige. Not long ago, she was even pressuring Beige for a bride price, demanding that she divide her assets with Weishu.
Beige didn’t care about any of that. She would share everything with Weishu. If one day they really did reach the end of the road, she would take full responsibility and leave with nothing. But there was no need to say any of this to Chen Xiaoqian, who wouldn’t believe it and would only think it was empty words.
Weishu said softly, “Does it make you mad?”
Beige shook her head. “She sent people to look for you back then. She’s the one who brought you home and sent you abroad. I’m very grateful.” Weishu tugged on Beige’s shirt, tilting her head to look at Beige’s expression, carefully observing her.
Beige tousled Weishu’s head. Her palm lingered on her smooth, soft hair for a few seconds, then she patted her head again. “I’m telling the truth. Don’t worry.”
The three of them had a quick meal at the mall. When they got home, Yu Qing complained that she was hungry again. Weishu rubbed her stomach and said, “I’m a little hungry too, but it’s too late. I’ll get an upset stomach if I eat too much.”
Beige gave them a helpless look and suggested, “How about some milk and an egg tart?”
Weishu turned to look at Beige. “We have bread at home. Bread is fine.” She remembered that the egg tarts she ate were always made by Beige. Even with a pre-made crust, they still had to be baked in the oven. Beige had been with her all day for her check-up and then picked up Yu Qing. She must be exhausted and should get some rest.
“What? We have bread? Perfect, perfect!” Yu Qing made herself at home. She pulled open the refrigerator door, took out bread, Lao Gan Ma chili sauce, and yogurt, and kicked the door shut. She then waved to Weishu to come upstairs.
Beige called out from the kitchen, “Yu Qing, there are snacks here. Come and see what you want to eat.”
Yu Qing immediately changed direction, stuffing the Lao Gan Ma and other things in her arms to Weishu. “I’m going hunting. Wait for me.”
In the kitchen, Beige stood in front of an open cabinet, her back to the door. Yu Qing looked up and down. “Where are the snacks?”
Beige turned around, her expression calm. “I have something to talk to you about.” The person in front of her had changed. It was as if the gentle gentleman had shed his calm facade, revealing an intimidating, scrutinizing look. Yu Qing stopped in her tracks.
Five minutes later, Yu Qing came out of the kitchen with a bag full of snacks. “Babe, I’ve got the goods!” Weishu looked at the variety of snacks and pouted. These were all snacks that Beige usually didn’t let her eat much of. There was a truffle chocolate that she was only allowed to have one of a day.
Beige walked over and patted the back of Weishu’s head. She leaned down and whispered in her ear, “The yogurt is cold. She can have it, but you can’t.”
A sour rebellion bubbled up in Weishu’s stomach. “No.”
Beige raised an eyebrow, her eyes a little surprised. She reached out and touched Weishu’s stomach. “Let me see who’s holding a grudge.”
Weishu turned to leave. “I want to eat them all. All of them.”
“Wait,” Beige said, pulling Weishu’s hand. A helpless, doting look appeared in her eyes. She pointed to the kitchen and whispered, “I saved them all for you. There’s a lot more.”
Weishu’s lips turned up, but she quickly suppressed it, nodding reluctantly. “Oh.”
“Go on,” Beige said with a smile, watching Weishu walk upstairs. Beige didn’t tell them to go to bed early. The two girls hadn’t seen each other in a while and must have a lot to talk about. Even if Weishu didn’t remember, Yu Qing would surely stay up all night telling her stories.
But the most difficult thing had already been taken care of. She wasn’t afraid that Yu Qing would say anything else. Just a moment ago, Beige had tricked Yu Qing into the kitchen and told her to hand over the love letters. Yu Qing pretended to be confused. “Huh? What love letters?”
Beige said in a low voice, “The love letters Weishu wrote to me when she was abroad. Since you found them, give them back to me.”
Yu Qing saw that Beige already knew about it and stopped pretending to be clueless. She hesitated for a few seconds and shook her head. “Those are Weishu’s private belongings. I have to give them to her first.”
Beige’s face remained impassive. “No need. Those letters were written to me. Just give them to me.”
Yu Qing was completely surprised. “To you? How could they be for you?”
“Why not?” Beige’s face looked terrible, but her voice was steady. “Ah Shui was a nickname Weishu had for me. When she was abroad, she was all alone and surrounded by strangers. Of course, she would miss me so much and write me love letters. Isn’t that perfectly logical?”
The more Beige spoke, the calmer she became. The name “Ah Shui” coming out of her mouth gave her an indescribable, wonderful feeling. It was as if the impersonation had become a reality, as if Weishu had really been writing love letters to her, and the person she had been thinking about day and night was her.
But soon, this fantastical moment of self-gratification was broken by Beige herself. Yu Qing didn’t know how to argue. But she remembered Beige’s heartbroken look that summer, and the scale in her heart tilted slightly. Fortunately, her best friend’s ethics caught her in time. Yu Qing bit the bullet and argued, “Even if they are for you, so what? I have to get Weishu’s permission before I give them to you.”
“She has already given them to me. Now, those letters are my personal property. They just haven’t been delivered yet,” Beige said, walking toward her. She was tall, and when she put on a serious face, she was very intimidating. She held out her hand. “Now that she’s lost her memory, I don’t want her to remember the unpleasant past few years. I don’t think you want to destroy Weishu’s peace either. So, please hand over the love letters to me.”
Yu Qing was completely at a loss for words. “…Okay. They’re on the side of my suitcase. I’ll give them to you tomorrow.”
Looking at the light on the second floor, Beige’s lips curled into a faint smile, tinged with ambition and a hint of bitterness. After the two girls went upstairs, they cuddled on the bed and whispered secrets. Yu Qing started from the first day Weishu stayed at her house after going abroad, sharing stories of their years together. Weishu listened with great interest, gradually forming an image of her past self through Yu Qing’s stories.
“Third Aunt is a little blunt, but she’s a really good person,” Yu Qing said. “After you lost your memory, Third Aunt even asked my parents to find a doctor for you abroad, but the doctor said it wasn’t a good idea to give you too much stimulation right now, so Third Aunt respected your wishes and let Beige take you.”
Weishu listened to Yu Qing, becoming more and more engrossed. The facts were just as Yu Qing said. Chen Xiaoqian and Beige didn’t get along. Weishu liked Beige, so she instinctively sided with her, but Chen Xiaoqian hadn’t done anything wrong to her. She felt awkward being caught between them, but fortunately, Beige didn’t seem to mind.
“But I’ll get my memory back soon, and then everything will be fine,” Weishu said to herself.
Yu Qing nodded. “That’s true. Third Aunt is easygoing. She won’t hold it against you.”
Weishu turned over and asked Yu Qing, “Were there any interesting things that happened during those years abroad?”
Yu Qing also turned to face her. She thought for a moment, and her eyes suddenly lit up. “Yeah. Does being a man-hater count?”
Weishu’s face was a question mark. “Huh?”
The Weishu who lived abroad was terrifyingly solitary. Aside from Yu Qing, who could live and eat with her, anyone else who tried to get close to Weishu would find it incredibly difficult. Especially men.
“This isn’t just me saying it. You definitely don’t remember, but there was one time we went camping. A boy who had a crush on you followed you when you left the group to take a walk, and he fell into a ditch. The best part is, you watched him fall in with your own eyes, and you only came to call us a long time later. You even refused to go help him.”
Weishu asked excitedly, “What do you mean?”
“It means you didn’t want to save him. Because he confessed his feelings to you from the bottom of the ditch! Hahaha, I almost died laughing. What’s even funnier is that you were going to go get someone to save him, but when you heard him say he liked you, you immediately didn’t want to save him anymore. You just stood on the edge of the ditch for a few minutes without saying anything. The boy said that when he saw your expression, he thought you were going to throw a rock at him and kill him.”
Weishu laughed a few times too, and then she felt a little uneasy. “Don’t you think that’s a very blunt personality? The kind that loves and hates so clearly?” It was completely different from her soft personality now.
Yu Qing laughed and rolled around on the bed. “Maybe. You weren’t like that when you were little. You were more like you are now. If I had to describe it, it would be like a green plum, pickled and put in a clear jar, the kind that’s a little sour. You were pure and innocent, a little reserved, and mostly obedient and sweet.”
Weishu asked, “What about when I was abroad?”
Yu Qing thought for a moment. “It was more like an unripe green plum, hanging on a tree. It grew quietly, not making a sound as the wind and sun beat down on it, slowly taking in nutrients. The skin was still very hard. If it fell and hit your head, it would hurt.”
Weishu generally understood. “I remember you said I was aloof to other people. It was probably like that. I didn’t like to socialize then, and maybe I didn’t even like people, so I would put up a bunch of thorns and not let anyone get close.”
