After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Taking the Medicine
At eight in the morning, Shu Se was already bustling with people. Since the employee apartments were nearby, everyone lived close to each other. After cooking or buying something in the morning, they would bring their food to the common area on the first floor. Small groups would gather to eat and chat, making it a lively scene.
Weishu usually didn’t get up until after nine and wouldn’t arrive at Shu Se until ten or later. As a result, she had never witnessed such a lively Shu Se. So, when she pushed the door open today, the noise and commotion hit her full force, and she quickly backed out. She looked at the sign above the door in confusion, confirming that it said “Shu Se” and hadn’t been bought out by some restaurant or street food stall. Although the people inside had a slightly suspicious, overly bright smile, they were indeed her employees.
Yu Qing followed behind, her reaction completely different from Weishu’s. She was like a cat who smelled fish when she saw the crowd. To use a term modern young people liked, it was a paradise for extroverts. Weishu had never taken a personality test. She didn’t like the act of categorizing people with letters, but if she had to, she was definitely an introvert—a very big one, both before and after losing her memory.
“It’s so lively!” Yu Qing’s eyes lit up with surprise. “We brought food too. Let’s eat together!”
In the time it took for the two of them to enter and exit, and then re-enter, the people in the common area had scattered like birds and beasts. The tables were spotless, without a single plastic bag or foam container. Weishu expressionlessly looked around, glancing at the overflowing trash can. She took a deep breath and frowned. Who the hell eats leek-filled buns so early in the morning? That bowl of hot and sour rice noodles with all that broth must have been poured down the drain.
Why does it smell like Haidilao hotpot? Did someone eat garlic-steamed oysters? Wait, oysters. I’m a little hungry.
No matter what Weishu was thinking, her face remained impassive, revealing nothing. The employees looked at her, and a pin-drop silence fell over the room. It was their first time seeing the boss at a morning gathering, and the boss didn’t look very happy, which made them all nervous.
“Hey, why isn’t anyone eating?” Yu Qing broke the tense silence. She smiled and sat down on a sofa, took out their breakfast, and started eating. “Everyone, come and try the Sha Family soup dumplings, golden shrimp dumplings, and rice noodle rolls.”
The tempting aroma of the food spread. The young women, who were sitting in a row at the high table by the window, all looked over. They hadn’t finished their own breakfast and were still hungry, but with the boss standing there, their hearts were willing, but their bodies were too intimidated to move.
To catch the leader, you first catch the king. Yu Qing knew that Weishu wasn’t angry; she was just a little dazed. Yu Qing unwrapped a pancake with a large piece of steamed cod and handed it to Weishu’s mouth. “Ah, have a bite.”
Weishu didn’t want to open her mouth. So many people were watching. Why did this extrovert have to feed her in front of everyone? What about her authority as a boss? Although Weishu wasn’t a tyrant, she wasn’t close to her employees either, so she naturally had to maintain a certain sense of mystery and a high-status aura. She wasn’t one to act familiar.
Just as the two of them were at an impasse, Kong Qin’s laugh came over. “She’s trying to feed you. Why aren’t you eating?”
Her laugh was seductive and magnificent, like a goddess’s song. Yu Qing instinctively turned her head. The moment she saw the person, her entire body went rigid. A mature, beautiful woman walked down the stairs. Kong Qin was wearing a red dress today, and her face was meticulously made up. A few smudges of eyeshadow made her already seductive eyes even more captivating. Her defined, beautiful features made her look like a siren goddess who had emerged from the depths of a West European myth.
Kong Qin’s timely entrance abruptly changed the atmosphere on the first floor. Many people greeted her with smiles, and Kong Qin nodded in acknowledgment. Kong Qin’s gaze landed on Weishu’s face. She reached out, took the pancake from Yu Qing’s hand, and put it in Weishu’s hand. “Hold this. Go upstairs and eat.” Her voice was like the clang of a zither—magnificent and low. The vibrating frequency made Yu Qing’s vision go black and her breathing thin. Kong Qin finished and then whispered in Weishu’s ear, “I bought you some coffee. Your favorite hand-ground.”
Yu Qing became even more dazed and confused. Weishu, who was used to this, looked like a child who had found something delicious. Her eyes lit up, and she turned and went upstairs. Yu Qing stood in a daze for a long time before she finally came back to her senses and quickly chased after her. As she went up the stairs, Yu Qing turned her head and met Kong Qin’s gaze. Kong Qin was sitting gracefully on the sofa, giving her a polite, faint smile. Kong Qin was about to ask, “Are the things on the table yours?” when Yu Qing, as if she had been stung by something, turned around and sprinted upstairs in a very rude manner.
Kong Qin was left with a table full of food. She was speechless. The next moment, she said, “Come on, everyone. Dig in.”
Weishu’s best friend… why does she seem a little silly?
…
Upstairs, Weishu was startled. “What’s wrong with you?”
Yu Qing had rushed upstairs like a rocket, her expression very strange, with an unnatural blush on her cheeks. “Hello,” Yu Qing said woodenly, nodding to Weishu. Weishu narrowed her eyes, her gaze scrutinizing. “Hello. Please have a seat.” Yu Qing stiffly turned around and sat on the sofa behind her.
Weishu sat down at her desk. Using the monitor to hide her actions, she secretly took pictures of Yu Qing being silly. Just as she raised her phone, her computer opened, and an email popped up. Weishu looked at it for a moment, then looked up and focused on taking pictures of Yu Qing’s dazed expression, taking a dozen photos in a row. Yu Qing heard the sound and slowly turned her head.
Weishu said, “Smile.” Yu Qing cracked a smile. “Hehe.”
Weishu slumped in her chair, laughing uncontrollably. She sent the photos to Beige. Beige replied with a helpless emoji of a hand patting a head. After entertaining herself for a while, Weishu gradually stopped smiling. The email interface on her computer had been selectively ignored for half an hour. The local drug testing center took a long time to get results, about a dozen days, and would send them to her by email. The email contained the full drug test reports.
Yu Qing was still staring blankly at the door, no longer looking at the camera. Weishu had no choice but to put her phone away and stare at the email. She opened the file, chose “print,” and then “yes.” The printer hummed and warmed up. After a dozen seconds, it spit out the report. It contained the ingredients and concentrations of the drugs. Since they were all chemical compounds, Weishu couldn’t understand them and had to look them up one by one.
To understand her past, she had to probe into her own private business. Weishu felt a sense of pain as if she were peeling herself open, and a chilling tension that made her hands and feet cold. Her current life was peaceful and happy, and she held the key to Pandora’s box. She wasn’t curious about her past, but when she thought of Beige’s vulnerable, cautious eyes, Weishu felt compelled to do it. She wanted her lover to be open and worry-free. She wanted to clear up all the misunderstandings. She wanted to be with Beige.
Weishu opened her browser and typed in the names of the ingredients one by one. Twenty minutes later, she held the test report, her heart a mix of emotions, and made an appointment with a doctor. As expected, many of the ingredients pointed to psychiatric drugs. Weishu had no memory of this. After waking up, the only thing she felt was related was her preference for seafood.
Could this be a result of a trauma response?
Trauma responses are not uncommon. As the old saying goes, “once bitten by a snake, you fear the sight of a rope for ten years.” A person walking at night who sees an animal that’s been run over, or even a plastic bag flying in the wind, could get scared and have a trauma response.
Does a trauma response require so much medicine?
Weishu asked herself. Her emotions had always been very normal. Her joys, anger, and sorrows were all within a stable range. Besides, things other than seafood made her uncomfortable, but they weren’t inedible.
But it’s not like Weishu would hoard these drugs for research, would she?
For some reason, Weishu thought of certain artists who pursued extremes and would voluntarily take drugs to seek spiritual liberation. She shivered at her own guess, and immediately changed her appointment from the afternoon to an hour later. Weishu deleted the print record, picked up the printout, and went downstairs. She asked Kong Qin to look after Yu Qing and then took a taxi to the hospital. The hospital was packed, but luckily Weishu only had to see a general practitioner.
The doctor looked at her medical records and the test report for a while, then called a senior doctor who didn’t have much hair left, and finally called an old doctor with gray hair. The three of them studied the test report for over ten minutes before the old doctor spoke carefully. “These drugs are most likely special drugs from abroad. They’re not internationally recognized, and we haven’t seen many of them. They are probably for a mood disorder or a psychiatric disorder. We can’t be sure.”
“Do mood and psychiatric disorders refer to trauma responses?”
The doctor pushed up his reading glasses and explained kindly, “A trauma response is just a symptom. Mood disorders and psychiatric disorders basically cover all mental and psychological illnesses. There are many kinds, and based on these drugs, we can only give you a vague conclusion. Young lady, you can try to find your previous medical records.”
Weishu was comforted by the doctor’s words. There were other patients waiting, so she had to get up and leave. Weishu folded the test report and put it in a hidden pocket in her backpack before leaving the hospital. The range the doctor gave was too broad, and Weishu couldn’t find a definitive answer. She had only been given a direction to go in. She had discovered a secret about her past self.
Beige didn’t know she was taking medicine. Otherwise, she would have kept the pills at home. The fact that they were in a password-protected box in her office closet showed that she was hiding it from everyone and didn’t want anyone to know.
Beige’s hot-and-cold attitude, and her cautious vulnerability in front of her, were because of her own distance and avoidance.
Was her distance from Beige related to the drugs she was taking? Or rather, was it related to her illness?
She hadn’t taken any medicine since she woke up. Would that affect the development of her illness? Where exactly were her previous medical records?
Weishu sat outside the hospital door, feeling bitter and overwhelmed by her thoughts.
…
As noon approached, the girls at the studio went out in groups for a hotpot meal nearby. Only two people were left in the office, one standing and one sitting.
Kong Qin raised her hand and looked at the time. “Let’s go. I’ll take you to get something to eat.”
Yu Qing stared at Kong Qin’s wrist and the Longines watch on it. The elegant, luxurious watch face rested perfectly on her prominent wrist bone. Yu Qing was mesmerized.
“Wake up,” Kong Qin said, leaning over and snapping her fingers next to Yu Qing’s face.
“Ah, what… okay, let’s go.” Yu Qing felt like she was floating. She had no idea where she was going or what she was doing.
Kong Qin was asked by Weishu to take Yu Qing to eat. She chose a Thai restaurant, sat down, and picked up the menu, asking Yu Qing what she wanted to eat. Yu Qing didn’t say anything. She took the menu and stared at it blankly.

@Circle: “Your friend”
Weishu was looking at her phone and replied quickly.
@SHU: “She looks a little silly. Please bear with her.”
Kong Qin thought, How many years has it been since I had to take care of a child? One Weishu wasn’t enough, and now there’s another one.
