Chapter 29.2: Taking the Medicine
@Circle: “Is she always like this?”
Kong Qin didn’t like to speak ill of people behind their backs, but Yu Qing’s behavior was too strange. Her reactions were over-the-top, her gaze was unblinking, and she kept giggling, reminding Kong Qin of the village idiot next door.
@SHU: “I don’t know. Maybe she spends too much time with animals.”
@Circle: “Animals?”
@SHU: “Yeah, she’s a pet expert. She has a lot of animals.”
@Circle: “Does she have a lizard?”
@SHU: “She actually does. A blue-spotted lizard named Sonsong.”
Weishu stared at her phone for a while. Kong Qin didn’t send any more messages.
Weishu was on her way to a private hospital. The public hospital’s psychiatric department was fully booked, and if she wanted to see a recognized expert, she would have to book at least a month in advance. She didn’t have that much time, so she had to go to the most famous private hospital in Jin City. Private hospitals were expensive, but the service was excellent. The moment she entered, a dedicated staff member escorted her to the relevant consultation room.
Weishu handed the test report to the doctor and repeated what the previous doctor had said. The doctor sitting across from her was wearing a mask, but his deep-set eyes, which were visible, suggested he might be of mixed heritage.
“You’re saying you lost your memory in a car accident, found these pills in your office, and want to identify the drugs so you can work backward to figure out your illness?” The doctor frowned after listening to her story. Weishu nodded, her voice low and sad. “Everyone around me says I was terrible to people before I lost my memory. And that I hurt my lover very badly…” Weishu stopped talking, her heart full of bitterness.
The doctor shook his head. “I don’t recommend you ‘diagnose’ yourself this way.”
Weishu didn’t speak, staring blankly at the test report.
The doctor said, “This type of illness is unstable. It can get worse at any time, or it can get better at any time. For example, after you lost your memory, your emotions lost their breeding ground. Judging from your current body language, I don’t see anything unusual. In a situation like this, constantly thinking you’re sick is an extremely negative psychological suggestion.”
Weishu knew this, of course. Ever since she found the medicine in her office, her nerves had been on edge. Before the test results came out, she pretended she didn’t know and buried her head in the sand. But today, ever since she saw the test results, her emotions had sunk to their lowest point since she’d regained her memory.
The doctor’s tone softened. “It’s best if you find your previous medical records and come in for regular checkups. You can also pay a little more attention to your well-being. But a person’s emotions are complex. Don’t worry too much.”
Weishu nodded, but then a thought occurred to her, and she asked, “Doctor, can you identify these drugs?” The doctor hadn’t told her what the drugs were from the very beginning. The doctor clearly didn’t want to answer the question, but Weishu had asked directly and was waiting for a response, so he had no choice but to be honest. “I can identify some of them. They are special drugs often prescribed by doctors in Europe. They haven’t been approved in our country. These drugs are very effective against early symptoms of schizophrenia, such as auditory and visual hallucinations and paranoia. But the side effects are significant. The patient is extremely miserable during the treatment period, and the drugs cause emotional apathy and a loss of vitality. The powerful effects can also cause the condition to relapse, but overall, it’s a turn for the better.”
Weishu took the doctor’s order and got more than a dozen tests done, then waited on a long bench for the results. In the end, the doctor told her not to take any medication on her own before the results came back. Weishu, of course, wouldn’t take them. The whole box of pills represented something so much more, and it was self-evident. Weishu had heard some of her past from others, and she had found some things on her own, gradually piecing together a broken corner of her life.
“Patient number 03, your results are ready.” A doctor came out of the room next door and handed her the Doppler results. Weishu folded the thin piece of paper and went to the bathroom to wash her face. In the mirror, there was a pale, thin face. When she wasn’t expressing any emotion, her eyes looked like an inorganic substance, so cold that they made people want to take three steps back. In the past, when Weishu looked at this face, she always tried her best to force out all kinds of kind and sweet smiles. But now, she couldn’t smile at all.
“Are you okay?” Weishu asked her reflection, her voice very soft. “You never told anyone about these things. Did you ever think, what if one day you forgot, too?”
A person who has been through great pain waits alone for their wounds to heal. These sorrows and struggles that she had once carried were now remembered by no one. A single, clear tear slid down Weishu’s face. Her expression remained blank as she muttered to herself, “I forgot. What do I do?”
…
In the evening, Weishu drove back to Shu Se. On the phone, Kong Qin had urged her several times. “I have a date tonight. Hurry up and take her away.” Weishu joked around, trying to subtly ask Kong Qin who the date was. “I told you about her before, the Sun family’s daughter,” Kong Qin said, not sounding very enthusiastic. “Old Mr. Sun is an elder of mine. He asked me so many times, I couldn’t keep saying no.”
Unlike Weishu, who came from a family of businessmen, Kong Qin’s family was one of scholars. Her ancestors, going back seven generations, were all painters and calligraphers. She had grown up surrounded by the smell of ink and could easily sell her traditional Chinese paintings for a five-figure price. However, Kong Qin liked modern things. She was the type to have one foot in the world of ink and the other reaching out to touch the new era. She was unconventional and not interested in running a business, so she was content to stay in Weishu’s studio.
Weishu thought for a few seconds. “By seniority, I should call you ‘Aunt’?” Kong Qin laughed and told her to drive safely on the way back.
Weishu stopped the car, and the two of them were already waiting at the door. Kong Qin got into the passenger seat, and Yu Qing was a step behind, clumsily moving to the back seat. Weishu looked at the two of them through the rearview mirror. Seeing that the atmosphere between them was harmonious, she couldn’t help but ask, “How was your day?”
Yu Qing, who was secretly looking at Kong Qin, was stunned. The corners of her mouth curved up into a silly smile. “It was very, very good.” Weishu then looked at Kong Qin. At noon, Kong Qin had been a little disgusted with Yu Qing, but now she looked very calm. “Sister Qin, my best friend is a little eccentric. I hope she didn’t cause you any trouble.”
The words were very polite. Kong Qin smiled when she heard them. “Don’t give me so much credit. It’s not like I’m babysitting. What trouble? Your friend is my friend. No need to talk like that.” Weishu agreed, and Yu Qing immediately jumped in. “Then can I call you ‘Big Sister’ like Weishu does?”
Kong Qin narrowed her eyes and looked at her. “You can.”
Yu Qing’s face glowed with a strange light. Weishu suspected she was about to jump up and hit her head on the roof of the car. Fortunately, Yu Qing wasn’t that unreliable. She giggled to herself for a while, then lowered her head, lost in thought. Weishu and Kong Qin discussed the designs for the month and talked about a client’s requirements. Kong Qin glanced at the time. “That’s enough. We’re three blocks away.”
The car was spacious, and the three of them sat comfortably. The atmosphere was harmonious. Weishu smiled and adjusted the GPS. The destination was Jiangbin Restaurant.
“Are we going to eat?” The GPS’s voice woke Yu Qing up. She looked at the two of them with great interest, thinking that the three of them were going to have dinner together. Weishu shook her head. “I’m dropping Sister Qin off at the Jiangbin Restaurant. We have to go somewhere else for dinner.”
Yu Qing was stunned for a moment and glanced at Kong Qin’s face. “Sister Qin has a date?”
Kong Qin gave a lazy smile. “Yes, I have a date, little one.”
Yu Qing’s face instantly turned bright red. “I’m not a little one. I’m two years older than Weishu.”
Kong Qin laughed. She slowly teased, “Then aren’t you a little one?”
Yu Qing didn’t get it and asked indignantly, “Then, Sister Qin… how old are you?”
Kong Qin casually mentioned her Chinese zodiac sign. Weishu was silent for two seconds, then couldn’t help but remind Kong Qin, “Sister Qin, she doesn’t even know all the zodiac signs.” Kong Qin shrugged, her face full of innocence. “Then I have no comment.”
Even when Kong Qin got out of the car, Yu Qing was still looking at her phone, using a search engine to figure out “how to guess a person’s age based on their zodiac sign.” Weishu waved her hand in front of her. “Want to go get a drink? Are you in?”
Yu Qing looked up instantly, her face full of caution. She firmly refused. “You’re a terrible drunk. I’m not going with you.”
Weishu frowned, not believing her. “Where did you hear that nonsense?”
Yu Qing, seeing that she didn’t believe her, didn’t hold back. “You cry when you’re drunk. You cry so horribly. You get drunk once every year. I’m not going drinking with you.” Seeing how sincerely she said it, Weishu believed her a little, but she acted nonchalant. “That’s right. Drinking is for drowning your sorrows. If you don’t have sorrows, what are you drinking for?”
Yu Qing’s face looked like she had seen a ghost. “I don’t have sorrows. Why would I go drinking with you?”
Weishu pursed her lips and thought for a while. She patted Yu Qing’s shoulder.
Yu Qing asked, “What?”
Weishu pointed to the zodiac screen on her phone. “Just a heads-up. Her birth year is in another year. The birth year is a 12-year cycle.”
Yu Qing did a calculation, but couldn’t figure it out, so she opened a calculator and typed it in. She then looked up and said loudly, “23!”
Weishu blinked, her face full of anticipation. She slowly said, “Try adding another cycle.”
Yu Qing’s eyes widened in disbelief. She said in a trembling voice, “Is it… 35?!”
Weishu squeezed the hand she had on Yu Qing’s shoulder. “My condolences.”
Yu Qing immediately shriveled up like an old cucumber that had been picked three days ago. “Why? She looks so young!” Yu Qing was questioning her life.
Weishu said, “The power of money. You don’t get it. I forgot to tell you, Kong Qin comes from a family of scholars. Her previous dates were all well-read women. She’s not just going to dinner tonight; she’s going on a blind date. Her date is the Sun family’s daughter, who just graduated with a Ph.D. and got into the city museum.”
Yu Qing, who had failed Chinese class from a young age, was speechless. This was a classic fall from grace. Yu Qing racked her brain, trying to prove herself. “But today, she was very interested in Sonsong. She said she had never seen a blue-spotted lizard up close and hoped she’d have a chance to see it next time!”
“Oh really? Maybe it’s because the Sun family’s daughter is a Ph.D. in agricultural science and is very interested in small animals. After all, the Sun family’s daughter has a real degree and studies animals and plants. Don’t you think?”
Yu Qing, who was a veterinarian by trade but was only self-taught in pet care and had very average grades in school, was speechless.
Why is there so much suffering in this world!
Weishu smiled and said, “So, can we go for a drink now?”
