After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 30
Chapter 30: Drunk
A winding stream, elegant incense burning. In a serene courtyard, a banquet was laid out, and a few people sat together, sipping tea and chatting, their conversation lively.
“North Zong is a true young talent. You young people these days are really something,” said Mr. Yang. He was in his forties, with thinning hair, but he was sharp in both his words and his actions.
“Mr. Yang, you’re too kind. I still rely on your guidance and for you to give my company, Kuangye, more opportunities,” Beige said, refilling his empty teacup. With a single hand, she gestured for him to drink.
Another man who looked somewhat like Beige laughed and said, “Xiao Ge is young and not yet stable in her work. She needs us elders to give her more pointers so she can go far.”
Beige nodded and looked at Zhou Shan, smiling. “My uncle is right.”
Mr. Yang sipped his tea and smacked his lips. “Is this old white tea?”
“Mr. Yang, you have excellent taste,” Beige said, clapping her hands. Someone brought over a wooden box. Beige opened it and pushed it toward Mr. Yang, her tone humble. “I heard that Mr. Yang has a lot of social engagements and loves white tea. This is a seven-year-old old white tea. It’s good for sobering up, clearing heat, lowering bl00d pressure and bl00d sugar, and it even protects the cardiovascular system. Last time I was in Yu City, I was lucky enough to mooch a few tea cakes from Mr. Feng. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about tea, so I can only ‘borrow flowers to offer to the Buddha’ and give this to you, Mr. Yang.”
Mr. Yang examined the tea carefully. When he heard it came from Mr. Feng, he immediately had someone accept it.
“North Zong, you’re so thoughtful,” Mr. Yang laughed heartily and patted Zhou Shan on the shoulder. “Brother Zhou, your project is a done deal, a done deal. I’ll have someone contact you when I get back, and we’ll finalize it as soon as possible!”
Zhou Shan’s face lit up with joy as the matter was finally settled. “That’s wonderful, Mr. Yang. Have some more tea.”
Beige filled the teacups of everyone at the table. The tea was clear and had a rich aroma. A single sip was refreshing and comforting. The meal was a great success. Afterward, Mr. Yang felt a sense of unfulfilled excitement. With a wave of his hand, he suggested, “North Zong, you’ve never been to ‘Night Color,’ have you? Let’s go. I’ll show you around. They have champagne towers that are two people high. It’s a luxury winery.”
Night Color was a winery with a different business model. It had areas open to customers where you could get wine from the cellar at any time. It was essentially a bar, but the atmosphere was much more upscale.
Beige paused as she was about to get into the car. She had no problem with drinking, but Zhou Shan had had stomach surgery, and drinking posed a risk of a gastric perforation. Zhou Shan avoided Beige’s gaze. After hesitating for a while, he gritted his teeth and nodded. “Okay, let’s go.”
Zhou Shan and Beige got into the same car, sitting in the back seat. “Can you even drink?” Beige’s tone was disapproving. “If you can’t, don’t force it. Even if this project falls through, there’s still Mr. Li, Mr. Wang, and Mr. Liu.”
Zhou Shan was only eight years older than Beige; he was her maternal uncle. After Beige’s company became successful, her mother, Zhou Wei, helped her brother start a company. He wanted to ride Kuangye’s coattails but couldn’t get into the cybersecurity industry, so he had to pivot. He only made a little money through Beige’s connections.
Zhou Shan shook his head and said honestly, “It’s too much trouble. I just get drunk easily. When I’m drunk, I’ll stop drinking. It’s fine.”
Beige saw that he was determined to go. Since he was an elder, she couldn’t press the matter, so she closed her mouth and left a message for Zhou Wei, informing her of the situation. If Zhou Wei saw it in time and called Zhou Shan, it would be more effective than her saying anything.
Night Color was a famous open winery. The outside layout was similar to a large bar, with various areas for people to drink, chat, and have fun. Some people danced, and others tasted wine. Those who liked a lively atmosphere stayed on the first floor, and those who preferred a quiet one went to the private rooms on the second floor.
After getting out of the car, Beige glanced at her phone. Zhou Wei hadn’t replied, so she must be busy. The manager of Night Color was sharp and walked over. She was about to put on her signature smile to welcome the esteemed guests when the person in front of her smiled.
“Senior?” The manager took Beige’s outstretched hand, her voice full of surprise. Beige naturally took the lead, introducing Mr. Yang. “This is Mr. Yang, an esteemed guest. Do you have a private room on the second floor? Please prepare some good wine for us.”
The manager didn’t expect to run into an acquaintance here. She smiled widely and welcomed them upstairs. “Of course. Please follow me.”
Beige intentionally fell a step behind. Before entering the private room, she pulled the manager aside and said quickly in a low voice, “Find some strong liquor, the kind that goes to your head quickly, for Mr. Yang. And find some low-proof liquor to put in front of the other person.”
The manager nodded repeatedly. “What about you?”
Beige loosened her cuff and smiled helplessly. “Don’t make it too low. After all, I have to keep them company.”
The manager immediately looked concerned for her. “Um, senior,” the manager took a few steps but came back. Her eyes darted around before settling on Beige’s face. She said bluntly, “Do you have a girlfriend now? Did you manage to win over the person you were chasing? If not, how about you consider me?”
Beige’s mind went blank for half a minute, then she burst out laughing. “I’ve already proposed.” She took out an engagement ring from her suit pocket and put it on her left ring finger. She casually complained, “I went swimming with a few female CEOs this morning, took it off, and forgot to put it back on. I apologize for the misunderstanding.”
The manager pouted, her face full of disappointment. “Who is it? Who did you chase for so many years? All of us underclassmen who had a crush on you are dying of jealousy.”
Beige smiled faintly and didn’t say much more. “She’s a very sweet and sensible person.”
When she said this, a flash of satisfaction and happiness crossed Beige’s face. The manager naturally understood Beige’s expression. Even though she was indignant, there was nothing she could do. Ever since she was in college, she had known about the beautiful senior from the next department. Many people had chased her, but the senior had her heart set on someone and was rude to everyone else. She had chased her beloved for a long time, and many people were sad that she hadn’t succeeded by graduation. But seeing the senior get what she wanted and even propose was a perfect end to her youth, with no regrets.
The manager gathered herself, gave Beige a generous smile, and turned to go to the first floor to choose the wine. The first floor was large, with an outdoor area and an indoor area. The indoor area was much quieter than the outdoor one. Many people sat in their booths, drinking and chatting, the atmosphere peaceful.
“Where’s the plum wine?” the manager asked the bartender at the counter. “Didn’t we just get three bottles from the cellar yesterday?” Their special plum wine was fragrant, low-proof, and got even lower as you drank. If you drank it slowly, you wouldn’t get drunk at all. The bartender thought for a moment and pointed to an area. “That customer just bought all of them.”
The manager followed the bartender’s finger and saw a booth near the stairs. The stairs were on a corner, and the booth was in a secluded triangular area. If you didn’t look carefully, you wouldn’t notice it, but it was nice and quiet. The manager took a few steps forward and saw that they still had one unopened bottle of plum wine on their table. Just one more bottle should be enough for Beige tonight.
After a moment of deliberation, the manager put on a polite, enthusiastic smile and said, “Hello, I’m the manager here. I apologize for the interruption.”
Weishu was playing checkers with Yu Qing. One of her pieces reached its destination, and she laughed, slapping her leg and pointing at Yu Qing. “It’s your turn to drink! Hurry up. Why aren’t you moving? Don’t cheat.”
Yu Qing rubbed her forehead, pulled her, and gestured for her to look at the manager. A little tipsy, Weishu looked at the manager with hazy eyes. She was in a daze for several seconds. “Huh? Who are you? What are you doing here?”
The manager smiled politely and explained her request. After she finished, the manager was a little nervous. One of the two was obviously drunk, and they looked like they were having a great time drinking. It would be difficult to interrupt them and ask for the wine they had already bought. Besides, these three bottles of plum wine were specially made and sent for sampling, so they were expensive. The manager never expected anyone to buy them all at once. These two must be rich and powerful. Thinking of this, the manager couldn’t help but speak again.
“How about this? The bar will pay you double for this bottle, and you can pick out any three bottles from the counter. How does that sound?”
Weishu’s brain was slow. After a few seconds, she understood what the manager meant. She pointed to the bottle. “You want this bottle?”
The manager’s forehead was a little sweaty. “Yes.”
Weishu was in a daze for a while, then sat there dejectedly. “Then you can have it.”
The manager saw that she wasn’t very happy and was about to say something else when Weishu turned to Yu Qing and complained. “You won’t let me drink, and now she’s in charge of me, too.”
Yu Qing rubbed her forehead. She gets drunk from a single bottle of plum wine. Yu Qing was speechless at Weishu’s drinking capacity. She placated her. “We won’t let her be in charge, okay? We’ll just keep drinking.”
Weishu nodded. “Okay! Go get me some more wine!”
Yu Qing gave the manager a look and whispered, “Just make two similar special drinks.” The manager quickly understood. She took the plum wine from the table and told the bartender to mix two low-proof sweet drinks for them.
Upstairs, Beige took a sip and immediately tasted the plum wine in her glass. She couldn’t help but look at the manager. The manager stood there, her face full of smiles, and with a few words, she got Mr. Yang to happily accept the wines she had recommended based on everyone’s personality.
Beige whispered to the manager, “Thank you.”
The manager smiled at her. “You can’t thank me for this wine. It was originally bought by two customers on the first floor. They were willing to give it up so you could have a drink.” The manager knew that asking a customer for a bottle of wine they had already bought came with the risk of being scolded and getting a complaint. It was a thankless job.
The manager had more than one person to serve, so she quickly went to greet other customers. Beige also went back to the private room to drink with Mr. Yang. Because the plum wine was low-proof, Beige wasn’t too drunk when she came out. Mr. Yang had gotten drunk an hour earlier. Beige had told Zhou Shan to use the excuse of going to the bathroom to sneak away, and now that the party was ending, Zhou Shan had just returned.
Beige and Zhou Shan escorted a very drunk Mr. Yang downstairs and handed him over to his assistant at the bottom of the stairs. “My dear niece, let’s drink again next time!” Mr. Yang took a few steps, his mind clearing up a bit. He had been so happy with Beige today that he couldn’t help but want to talk to her again.
Beige took a step back without a trace, perfectly retreating into the area of Weishu’s booth. She gave a fake smile. “Of course, next time for sure.”
Mr. Yang sobered up a little more, pushed his assistant away, and stood up straight. “My dear niece, I can see that you’re young and very capable. I have high hopes for you! We’ll get together again next time!”
Beige smiled, watching Mr. Yang leave.
Zhou Shan breathed a sigh of relief, covering his stomach as if he had just survived a disaster. “It’s finally over.”
Beige said, “Remember to call my mom when you get home. She told you not to drink.”
Zhou Shan’s face immediately fell. “Niece, don’t go snitching on me.”
