After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: A Dream of the Past
“You’re deliberately taking advantage of Weishu’s proud nature!” Chen Xiaoqian couldn’t help but slam her hand on the table, her voice rising. “You want to marry her and give nothing in return? You want to get all the benefits in the world?”
What’s more, Weishu was not a person who loved to socialize. Her social circle was small. Meanwhile, Beige had become a big boss with plenty of opportunities for affairs. Her desire for Weishu was just a childhood obsession. After they got married, she would definitely fool around. Ten years, no, maybe just a few years later, they would naturally separate because of their relationship problems. By then, Weishu would have wasted the best years of her life and ended up with nothing.
Beige pinched the bridge of her nose, enduring the accusations. She repeated the same sentiment. “I’ll pay the dowry, but Weishu must be the one to tell me.”
Chen Xiaoqian sneered furiously. “What are you thinking, taking her away from the hospital secretly? You think that just because Weishu has lost her memory, you can take advantage of the situation? I know her character. Is she even talking to you? Does she pay attention to you? Don’t let your pursuit turn into an annoyance.”
Beige’s expression seemed to falter. She remembered Weishu’s hesitation before being discharged and knew that, in all likelihood, she truly didn’t want to live with her. The momentary flash of hesitation in her eyes didn’t escape Chen Xiaoqian, who became even more confident. “If you’re willing to honestly hand over your pre-marital assets and sign an agreement stating you’ll walk away with nothing if you cheat, I won’t stop you. But if you try to deceive her and trick her into marrying you without giving anything in return, I will absolutely not agree. Besides, Weishu never really liked you that much to begin with.”
Beige repeated Chen Xiaoqian’s words: “Never really liked me…” In Chen Xiaoqian’s eyes, she was a person trying to get something for nothing, and her one-sided love was laughable. There was little she could say to refute that statement. Chen Xiaoqian wore a triumphant, superior expression, looking at Beige as if she were a dog on its last legs.
Beige propped her elbows on her knees and took a deep breath. Just as she was about to speak, a message popped up on her phone.
[SHU]: Darling, coming home for dinner tonight?
Immediately after, a large sticker appeared. A pure white Ragdoll cat stretched lazily with the words “Waiting for you” floating above it. Then, the cat rolled over into a seductive pose, and the text changed to “An alluring little wildcat invites you not to be lonely in the middle of the night.”
Beige’s phone screen was large, and Chen Xiaoqian saw everything clearly. Chen Xiaoqian’s smug expression instantly turned green, and she glared at Beige with a complex mix of emotions.
Beige cleared her throat, looked away from the screen, and replied with “Don’t wait for me.” She put her phone away and said calmly, “Third Aunt, food shouldn’t be eaten carelessly, and words shouldn’t be spoken carelessly. We are in this relationship of our own free will; no one is taking advantage of anyone. I’ll repeat myself: whatever Weishu wants, she can tell me herself.” As long as she asks, I will give her anything. Of course, Beige didn’t say the last part out loud.
Furious, Chen Xiaoqian slammed the door shut and left. The conversation had once again ended badly.
Beige opened her screen again, staring at the messages from Weishu in a daze. “Waiting for you” was certainly not Weishu’s usual style. But she had personally handed the phone to Weishu before leaving home, so it wasn’t a case of someone else using it. Before Beige could think of an answer, Weishu’s message came back.
“Thank you for lunch. It was very delicious.”
Attached was a photo of a plate that was almost entirely clean.
[Ge]: Just leave it on the table. You don’t have to clean up. [SHU]: It will attract bugs. [Ge]: …If you clean up, the dishes will break.
Weishu didn’t reply right away. Three minutes later, she sent a photo of the dishes placed in the dishwasher. Not a single one was broken this time.
[SHU]: Are you busy with work tonight? Do you need me to bring you food?
Beige was completely overwhelmed with a pleasant surprise. She pursed her lips and politely declined Weishu’s offer. Weishu sent a “sad cat” emoji, asking why not. Beige had to reassure her that she didn’t want to trouble her and that the company had a cafeteria. Weishu didn’t reply after that.
Beige sat in the conference room for a while. The redness in her ears faded before she opened the door and returned to her office. She hadn’t lied to Weishu; she was indeed very busy. The company’s affairs had been piling up for half a month before Weishu’s car accident. For those two weeks, she was busy preparing to propose and arranging all sorts of surprises. Just when Weishu finally agreed to marry her, and they were ready to register their marriage, she got into a car accident the night before. Since then, Beige had been swamped with stress.
For the simple cranial tumor, Beige used her connections to get scans reviewed by renowned neurosurgeons at major hospitals across the country. The results were all similar conservative treatment plans, which was why she brought Weishu home. When she arrived at the office today, the files could have buried her.
For the next eight hours, Beige worked in her office until her assistant reminded her to go home at 10 PM. Beige checked the time, rubbed her sore eyes, pulled some eye drops from a drawer, and closed her eyes to wait for the stinging sensation to pass. In her exhaustion, she fell into a light sleep and didn’t wake up when the door was pushed open.
In her dream, she was transported back to the years when she first met Weishu. It was a scorching summer. The temperature could reach 40℃, a heat so intense it felt as if it would melt people. In those years, gardening was a popular hobby. Beige’s employers and Weishu’s family both had their own gardens. Weishu’s family favored expensive, single potted plants, while Beige’s employers preferred large clusters of flowers. The potted plants could be moved indoors or into a garden room to avoid the heat, but Beige’s flowers needed her constant care.
Beige often had to go out in the hottest part of the day to cover the flowers with a semi-translucent cloth, and then come out every half hour to spray water on the leaves. Her already dark skin was tanned like a coal ball. The next time she saw Weishu, the girl stared at her for a long time.
Weishu was visiting Beige’s employers with her parents. It was already past four, and the sun was less intense. Beige was leaving, carrying the sunshade cloth, when she ran into Weishu, who was out playing. Weishu wore a lemon-yellow fringe princess dress, with her hair in three pigtails tied with blue crystal bows at the ends. She was stepping carefully in her red leather shoes to avoid the mud in the garden, and she was clean from head to toe, like a spotless angel from a fairytale.
Weishu smiled happily at Beige. “Big sister, we meet again!”
Beige ignored her and walked past her.
“Don’t go,” Weishu pitter-pattered over, her small hand grabbing the strap of Beige’s gardening overalls. Her voice was soft and sweet. “I told Aunt Jiang to let you play with me.” Aunt Jiang was Beige’s employer.
Beige was suddenly a little angry. She brushed Weishu’s hand away. “I’m working. I don’t have time to play with you.” She lived there with her mother and was doing her mother’s work since her mom wasn’t well. She did as much as she could, but why did everyone assume she was just a helper they could order around? It wasn’t enough that she was working; now she had to be an entertainer too. Beige’s prematurely developed pride due to poverty created a subtle sense of imbalance when she saw the clean and distinguished Weishu.
“Look, I’m covered in mud,” Beige said, raising an eyebrow and deliberately taking a few steps closer. “I’m all dirty. I have to go take a bath.” Beige had a strong presence even as a child and was taller than Weishu. When she walked toward her, Weishu instinctively took a step back in fear. But when she heard Beige say she was going to take a bath, Weishu, who really wanted to play with her, hesitated, pulling at the fringe on her dress. “Can I come with you?”
“Sure,” Beige said with a mean smile.
When Weishu followed her into the bathroom, Beige intentionally turned the water on very low. As the water began to trickle, she handed the showerhead to Weishu. “You hold this.” Weishu looked at her wet dress, a little hesitant. “Shouldn’t we take our clothes off first?”
Beige never genuinely intended to take a bath with her. At her words, she simply shoved the showerhead into Weishu’s hand and turned the water on full blast. The sudden pressure made the showerhead twist in Weishu’s hand like an uncontrollable snake, lashing its tail in the air. Water instantly sprayed all over the room, drenching Weishu from head to toe.
“Hahahaha,” Beige burst out laughing, pointing at Weishu. “Drenched like a drowned chicken.”
Weishu belatedly realized that Beige was laughing at her. She looked down at her soaked clothes. Water had gotten into her shoes, making them sticky and uncomfortable. Her hair was damp, with strands flattened against her face, dripping water. The bathroom door wasn’t shut completely, and the cool air from the air conditioner outside made her shiver.
“Hehe,” Weishu laughed softly when she saw Beige laughing. A small dimple appeared on her face, making her look shy and cute. She thought Beige was just playing with her. “Do you want to try it too?”
Beige laughed for a moment, then her smile gradually faded. Especially after seeing Weishu’s sweet demeanor, her expression became cold and indifferent again. She turned off the water and said coldly, “This is no fun.” Beige turned to leave. With her long legs, she was out of the room in just a few steps. Before Weishu could react, she was gone. Weishu quickly followed to look for her.
Just then, Beige’s mother, having finished her work, pushed open the door. This was the servants’ quarters where Beige and her mother lived. It had a single living room, a single bedroom, and a single bathroom. There were no obstructions between the rooms. You could see the bathroom as soon as you pushed open the front door.
Beige’s mother first saw her daughter with water on her clothes. Just as she was about to ask what happened, she saw the drenched Weishu. Beige’s mother knew who Weishu was and was immediately startled. Without time to scold anyone, she ran to the bedroom, grabbed a dry towel, and began to wipe Weishu down. It was then that she figured out what had happened.
Beige’s mother was both shocked and angry, but also felt an unexplainable heartache.
“You can hit me,” Beige said after she’d let out her anger. She was still young and impetuous. After the initial fit of anger, she saw the soaked and shivering Weishu and realized what she had done was wrong.
Weishu’s eyes instantly widened. She had a pair of almond-shaped eyes, now filled with confusion and surprise. “Why would I hit big sister?” Beige looked down at her. “I got you all wet. Aren’t you angry?” Weishu shook her head seriously. “It’s not your fault. I was the one who wanted to take a bath and got wet.”
Weishu gave the same explanation to the adults. Weishu’s mother was a very gentle woman. She simply dismissed it as children playing and didn’t take it to heart. Since the Jiang family’s matriarch wasn’t angry with the guest, the matter was dropped, especially since it was Weishu who had first asked to play with Beige. The incident was resolved with Weishu’s childish words, but she ran a fever for two days afterward and was sick for a whole week.
From outside the tall iron gate, Beige could see the IV stand in the second-floor bedroom and the little girl with a bored expression, resting her chin on her hand, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window. After getting sick, her bright eyes looked like they were covered with a layer of gray.
From then on, no matter when Weishu came to find her, Beige would stop what she was doing and take her to play. Even though she would be disciplined for not finishing her work, Beige never pushed Weishu away again, not even once.
