After I Lost My Memory, My Wife Started To Chase Me - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Like
Finally, the moment had arrived. Beige thought to herself.
Weishu was bound to feel uncomfortable—suddenly waking up to find someone else crammed into her life, feeling suffocating, unnecessary, and unpleasant. Beige forced herself to ignore the bitterness and inexplicable resentment bubbling up inside her. She worked to keep her voice calm and her expression neutral. “What aspects do you want to know about?”
Weishu had been watching her closely. At Beige’s response, she went straight to the point. “I heard that before my car accident, I had accepted your proposal. So, at the very least, we were girlfriends, right?” Weishu phrased it as a question. She had noticed Beige’s avoidance since she woke up and didn’t want to provoke her with the word “fiancée.”
Beige felt a sense of relief at her words. She nodded. “Yes, you are my girlfriend.”
Weishu stayed silent, watching Beige quietly, waiting for her to continue. The term “girlfriend” wasn’t entirely accurate either. In Beige’s own words, she was a fool who waited faithfully but stupidly for Weishu, finding contentment in her long and arduous pursuit. To put it nicely, she was deeply devoted; to put it harshly, she was obsessed.
“I was the one who pursued you,” Beige’s voice was calm and unique, reminiscent of a beautiful melody. “We met when you were six and I was nine. You had no one to play with at home, so you’d often come to find me. I’d take you to the woods behind the villa to catch fish and shrimp, pick wild vegetables, and play house.”
Beige spoke slowly as she recalled the memories. A faint hint of warmth touched the corners of her eyes, and a soft smile curved her lips. Beige was already a beautiful woman. Her demeanor was scholarly and refined, but her features were bold and striking, a mix that gave her an intellectual wildness. Seeing this side of her—soft and vulnerable—Weishu was captivated.
“Why did you play with me?” Weishu asked, enchanted but still focused on her mission. “Big kids usually don’t like playing with little kids, do they?”
Beige looked down at the engagement ring on her own finger. The smile on her lips faded slightly but remained gentle. “At first, it was because of guilt. Later, it was because of love.”
Because of love. Weishu selectively heard the answer she wanted. If Beige loved her, then everything would be easy. A sweet smile blossomed on Weishu’s lips, and a small dimple appeared on her cheek. “So, what kind of person am I?”
Beige looked up, her gaze meeting Weishu’s smiling eyes, and the smile on her face faltered and then disappeared. “You’re a very good person.” Beige’s tone was firm.
Weishu didn’t believe her. She gave an exaggerated laugh. “Oh, you’re putting me in the friend zone.”
Beige shook her head slightly, her voice slow but resolute. “It’s true. You are very good.”
Weishu pouted. “That’s so vague. What exactly is good about me?” Weishu’s voice was syrupy, as if she had a piece of candy in her mouth. Paired with her signature sweet smile, it was a combination Beige couldn’t resist.
When Weishu smiled like that, Beige’s heart raced and her back began to sweat. Her palms felt hot and clammy as she involuntarily remembered what Weishu was like before the accident. As a child, Weishu was a soft and lovely marshmallow. She wouldn’t get angry no matter how much you teased her, only cling to your clothes and follow behind you, her innocent and adorable appearance making you want to give her all the good things in the world.
Later… Weishu’s family experienced a tragedy. Her parents both passed away, shattering her pure and wonderful world and leaving it desolate and untended. Beige found out too late. She was absent during the most difficult time of Weishu’s life, and when they reunited, the soft, little girl in her memories had become a cold and frosty adult wearing a hard mask. Because she couldn’t hold onto anything and nothing was left, Weishu no longer cared about anything. She didn’t care about Beige’s disappearance and reappearance, her many years of following and making amends, or her attempts to be kind and the subsequent disappointments. Her snow-capped mountain had perpetual clouds, allowing no one to bring a single ray of sunshine.
“You’re kind-hearted and don’t hold grudges,” Beige said, her voice strained. You don’t hold onto anything at all.
Weishu didn’t get a specific description from Beige, so she decided to give up. “No, no, that’s too vague. Beige, did I do something wrong to make you so hesitant?”
Beige instinctively shook her head. “No.”
Weishu glanced at Beige’s left hand. She had noticed it before—Beige had a ring on her left ring finger. It looked like a wedding ring, probably put on during the proposal. But since Weishu had woken up, her own finger was bare. When the police returned her belongings, she had looked everywhere and couldn’t find a ring.
“Did I lose the ring, and that’s why you’re mad?” A wedding ring was, of course, very important. Weishu couldn’t think of any other reason. Beige’s love for her didn’t seem fake at all, and Weishu had fallen for Beige at first sight when she woke up. Of course, she liked her. Two people who loved each other shouldn’t have too many major conflicts… right?
Beige gave a small, self-deprecating smile that didn’t reach her face. “I’m not mad about that. The ring is just a ring. The most important thing is that you’re safe.”
Weishu couldn’t think of any other reason, so she just took a sip of her tea and continued to ask, “So, how long have we been together?” The answer was completely unexpected.
“Two months,” Beige said.
Weishu nearly choked on her tea. They had known each other since childhood, but had only been together for two months?
Beige pulled a tissue for her, and with a worried frown, held her hand over the corner of the table. “Be careful with your movements. Don’t hit your left arm.”
Weishu ignored her left arm and started to speak rapidly, like pearls spilling from a string. “When did you confess? We’ve only been together for two months… that’s unbelievable. My place looks like I’ve lived there for a long time. Did we move in together a long time ago? Common-law marriage?”
Beige’s frown deepened. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Weishu urged her, “Hurry up, tell me.”
Beige let out a long breath and selectively answered her questions. When did I confess? She had said it as a child, but no one would take a child’s words seriously. Beige didn’t mention that part. “Six years ago. You were starting college, and I was graduating. I drove you there, bought you a bouquet of flowers, and confessed, asking you not to forget me in college.”
Weishu was dumbfounded. If Beige was so good at this, why hadn’t she won her over long ago? Perhaps the look in her eyes was too obvious, as Beige couldn’t help but continue, “You were a person with goals and a plan. You were very busy in college, and I… I was busy with the company and graduate school. We didn’t see each other often, so things were delayed.”
Weishu did the math. She was twenty-five this year and had graduated from college two years ago. Two people in love moving at a snail’s pace still wouldn’t have taken until two months ago to get together. Unless Beige was hiding something.
Weishu thought for a while and decided not to press for more information. She had gotten enough for today. It was better to investigate slowly on her own. Three minutes later, Weishu made a decision. “If that’s the case, then we are still partners.”
Beige nodded subconsciously. Her heart gave a subtle jolt, and she didn’t object.
Weishu stood up, walked to Beige, and half-knelt in front of her. She took Beige’s hand and looked her in the eye.
Beige was baffled by her actions. Just as she was about to pull her up, Weishu said, “Beige, I don’t know if that’s the right thing to call you, or if I should call you ‘darling’ since that’s what you always called me in the old messages. I don’t know what happened between us before, or what our relationship was like. But I know very clearly what I’m doing and what I want now. So, I plan to start over. Of course, I’m not asking you to date me again. I hope you’ll accept a brand-new me. I will treat our relationship well, and I ask you to give me a little faith. Can you?”
