- Chapter 4 - Registering the Marriage
Chu Jin still remembered what she had guessed the day before about why Chi Ye wanted to marry her.
It was to get back at Yan Sisi.
Since that was the case, she had to put on a good show. She wanted Chi Ye to feel like her money was well spent.
If more money-making opportunities came in the future, Chi Ye might think of her first and send them her way.
As expected, Yan Sisi looked absolutely miserable.
“Do you really have to be so clingy?”
Hearing her voice, Chi Ye, who had looked a little surprised at first, suddenly went cold.
Chu Jin realized she might have overacted.
If this really affected Chi Ye’s relationship with Yan Sisi, she might be in big trouble.
She quickly pulled her arm back and moved a little farther away from Chi Ye. Then she stood up immediately, folding the blanket neatly and sitting down at the farthest corner of the sofa, pretending nothing had happened.
Meanwhile, Yan Sisi had already sat down on the sofa beside Chi Ye.
Now only Chu Jin was sitting far away from the two of them, as if she had been banished to the edge.
“What are you doing?” Chi Ye glanced at her.
Chu Jin blinked. “Nothing at all.”
“Do you need me to get water?” Chu Jin half-rose from her seat, trying to find a reason to leave.
“Sit down.”
“Okay.” Chu Jin had no idea what Chi Ye was thinking. But if she asked her to sit, then she would sit.
“We have a housekeeper. You don’t need to pour water.”
At that moment, the housekeeper had already brought over the tea. She added, following Chi Ye’s words, “President Chi is right. I can handle this kind of thing. Madam, you just sit and rest.”
You do know there’s a housekeeper, yet you included so many chores in the agreement.
Chu Jin complained silently in her heart but kept a polite smile on her face.
“Alright.”
Thankfully, the focus had shifted away from her. Chi Ye looked at Yan Sisi, who had crossed her legs and was leaning back casually.
“Why are you here?”
“I called you this morning and you didn’t answer, so I came to find you myself.” Yan Sisi took a piece of fruit from the tray, poked a blueberry with a fork, and ate it slowly.
Hearing that, Chi Ye glanced at Chu Jin and paused on her face for a moment.
“I was in the shower.”
Following her gaze, Yan Sisi also gave Chu Jin a meaningful look. Even her chewing stopped.
What are you looking at me for?
It was Chi Ye who took a shower, not the two of us together.
Chu Jin wanted to explain, but she had just embarrassed herself with an over-the-top performance. It was better to stay quiet now.
She swallowed her frustration and took the blame.
Chi Ye, who had caused the misunderstanding, acted as if nothing had happened. She took a sip of tea and finally asked, “Why were you looking for me?”
Faced with the question, Yan Sisi hesitated. Her expression showed she wanted to speak but was struggling to get the words out.
After a long pause, she finally replied with four words.
“You already know.”
Chi Ye seemed to understand and said calmly, “I told you. I will arrange it in a few days.”
Yan Sisi frowned. You already signed the marriage contract and have a wife. But when it comes to my request, it’s always ‘in a few days.’
As the two spoke in vague hints, Chu Jin could not figure out what they were talking about. But she could clearly feel the tension between them, like a pair of lovers in the middle of a cold war.
She stared blankly for a while before realizing that maybe she was the reason they were holding back.
So she decided to show some emotional intelligence.
“You two talk. I’ll go take a shower.”
It was the perfect excuse to leave the room and also clarify that she had not showered with Chi Ye earlier.
A win on both fronts. Chu Jin felt like kneeling down and thanking herself for being so smart.
“Didn’t you already shower this morning?” Yan Sisi asked with a confused look.
Chu Jin quickly took the chance to explain. “This morning it was President Chi who showered, not me.”
“I see,” Yan Sisi replied with a smile and a long, teasing tone. “President Chi.”
The tone was clearly full of provocation.
From the moment she walked through the door and saw that cozy scene, Yan Sisi had thought these two had already become affectionate in less than a day. But now she realized Chu Jin still called her ‘President Chi.’
Chu Jin, however, thought this was just some weird form of couple roleplay and suddenly felt like the biggest third wheel in the world.
She had no desire to be part of whatever game they were playing. One wrong move and she might get dragged into their twisted love story as cannon fodder.
She needed to keep things calm and smooth so she could collect that ten million.
They were going to register the marriage in the afternoon. They would probably need to take a photo, so she needed to freshen up and look good.
Chu Jin returned to her room and locked the door behind her.
She stepped into the bathroom and decided to enjoy a nice, relaxing bath.
After drying her hair and doing her makeup, she heard a knock at the door.
He Xian stood outside, holding a beautifully wrapped gift box.
Chu Jin opened the box and saw that it contained a dress meant for the afternoon.
She had originally planned to pick something from the closet, but apparently this had been specially prepared.
“This was picked out by President Chi. Please try it on and see if it fits,” He Xian said.
Chi Ye had good taste. It was a white dress made from soft and comfortable fabric. The design was simple but perfectly tailored, showing off Chu Jin’s figure in all the right places.
However, the zipper on the back went down quite far, and she could not quite reach it.
As she struggled with the zipper, she glanced up at the mirror and saw Chi Ye standing behind her, though she had no idea when she had come in.
Chi Ye had already changed clothes. She was wearing a silk blouse tucked into a black skirt made of the same material as Chu Jin’s dress.
“I’ll help you zip it.”
Although Chu Jin felt a little embarrassed, she didn’t refuse.
After all, it was inconvenient to zip the dress up by herself, and the sight wouldn’t be very graceful. So, she silently allowed it.
Chi Ye walked forward slowly and stopped behind her.
His gaze fell on Chu Jin’s exposed back. Her skin was smooth like silk, her back elegantly shaped, and in the shadows, her shoulder blades looked faintly like butterfly wings. Chi Ye was briefly lost in thought, unable to resist the urge to lift his hand and almost touch her with his fingertips.
Fortunately, reason returned just in time. His hand finally landed on the part of her back covered by the dress. With a gentle touch, he smoothed the fabric while his other hand carefully grasped the zipper and slowly pulled it up.
Even through the dress, Chu Jin could feel the warmth of Chi Ye’s palm. As the faint sound of the zipper filled the quiet air, a subtle tingling sensation quietly rose in her chest.
The dress fit perfectly. It wrapped around her waist just right, with a small amount of extra space.
It outlined her beautiful figure without sacrificing comfort.
“Not bad,” Chi Ye said as he looked at her reflection in the mirror. A rare smile touched the corner of his lips.
Chu Jin saw herself in the mirror and was genuinely surprised by how good she looked. She quickly praised him, speaking without hesitation. “You have great taste, President Chi.”
But just as his gaze had softened a moment ago, it instantly turned cold again.
Chu Jin felt a little discouraged.
President Chi’s thoughts were really hard to guess. No matter what she said, he never seemed pleased.
After getting everything ready, it was almost time to leave.
They went downstairs together. The driver was already waiting, and the car was parked in front of the villa.
Once they got in, the car drove them to the Linhe City Civil Affairs Bureau.
The process went by quickly. After signing and leaving their fingerprints, the clerk handed them the official marriage certificates.
“Congratulations on your marriage. Wishing you both happiness and a long life together,” the staff member said with a smile.
Chu Jin took the certificate and looked at the red-background ID photos of the two of them. A wave of mixed emotions rushed through her heart.
Happiness might be possible, but growing old together was out of the question.
After all, in three years, they would be back here to get a divorce certificate.
“You can now proceed to the oath ceremony,” the clerk said, pointing to a direction in the building.
“Can we skip it?” Chu Jin asked.
After all, their marriage wasn’t based on real feelings. It was just a contract, a partnership. There was no need to recite wedding vows.
It would only make the vows feel less meaningful.
And knowing Chi Ye’s personality, he probably wouldn’t want to read them either.
Chi Ye paused for a moment. His pupils darkened slightly.
He didn’t say a word.
“Ah, yes, you can skip it,” the clerk replied, clearly surprised. It was a rare request. Most couples looked forward to standing on the stage and recording the moment.
Still, the clerk gently tried to persuade them. “But it does give the day a sense of ceremony. It might be nice to—”
Chi Ye’s cold voice interrupted.
“No.”
He then turned and walked out of the building. Chu Jin quickly followed behind him.
When they reached the car, He Zhu was already waiting. Seeing them approach, he stepped forward. He glanced at Chi Ye, as if silently asking for approval.
But Chi Ye’s expression was unreadable. He Zhu hesitated, unsure of what to do.
Chu Jin was confused by what was going on. She couldn’t help but ask, “What’s happening?”
Chi Ye didn’t respond.
Seeing this, He Zhu seemed to understand and turned to explain to Chu Jin.
“Madam, President Chi has prepared a surprise for you.”
