- Chapter 6 - Sending His Own Wife to Prison and Getting Her Sentenced to Death
“Linze? What are you doing here…?”
Zhou Jifeng was surprised by his younger brother’s sudden appearance!
Especially since Linze looked like he was protecting Lin Yihuan.
When did these two get so close?
But in front of his closest family, Zhou Jifeng quickly composed himself, clearing away the earlier loss of control. He cleared his throat a few times, his expression regaining the usual cold and noble air. He adjusted his suit.
“This isn’t your concern. It’s a family matter between her and me. You should go back to the old residence.”
That sentence was obviously meant to send him away.
Zhou Linze didn’t let go of Lin Yihuan. Calmly, he lowered his eyes and took off his black jacket to cover the torn clothes she had after being pushed by Zhou Jifeng.
“Does it hurt?”
He pointed to her wrist.
Lin Yihuan shook her head, speaking softly, “You should go back. I’m fine. He can’t do anything to me.”
She didn’t want to drag Zhou Linze into this mess. After all, he and Zhou Jifeng were brothers, and if their relationship soured because of her, how would they get along in the future?
He had already helped a lot in this matter! Lin Yihuan didn’t want to see them grow apart because of her.
“I’m holding you up from dealing with family business, right?”
Zhou Linze emphasized the words “family business” heavily.
It sounded more like a warning.
Lin Yihuan instinctively raised her head and realized his dark eyes were locked tightly onto her.
His expression was hard to read.
Zhou Linze was very different from the always calm and cold Zhou Jifeng. He was aggressive!
Without saying a word, just standing there in front of Lin Yihuan, his shadow blocking the sunlight, his tense anger seemed to spread into her bones.
Their tense standoff didn’t last long before Zhou Jifeng, with a cold face, pulled them apart.
“Linze, stop messing around! No matter what, Lin Yihuan is your sister-in-law. If people see you two pulling and pushing like this, it will bring shame to the whole Zhou family!”
“Sister-in-law?” Zhou Linze raised an eyebrow, finally looking at his brother. “I remember you two are divorced?”
“…”
“Brother, the whole city is talking about how you sent your own wife to prison and got her sentenced to death just for Jiang Jinxue. Our Zhou family has no face left to lose.”
Zhou Jifeng was hit where it hurt. He furrowed his thick brows and snapped, “You just got back to the country, what do you know? Those pieces of evidence might have been faked by Lin Yihuan to escape guilt! Jiang Jinxue is gentle and quiet; she would never speak like that!”
“Oh.” Zhou Linze smiled, his narrow eyes like dark abysses. “So you’re saying Lin Yihuan bribed the entire judicial system to protect her, got special treatment, and even had fake witnesses?”
“I—”
“I haven’t seen her for three years, so I didn’t know Lin Yihuan had such power in the city now!” He said this while pulling Lin Yihuan back behind him. “But I do know this has alarmed Mom and Dad. They rushed back from Vancouver last night wanting to see Lin Yihuan. I’ll take her away first.”
Zhou Linze actually wanted to reach out and hold Lin Yihuan’s wrist.
But his fingertips hesitated, so he instead gently put his arm around her shoulder until he helped her into the passenger seat of his car.
“You’re pregnant, and yet you’re still this thin? Are you trying to starve my son?”
Lin Yihuan was stunned. The air around her was filled with Zhou Linze’s scent, a faint smell of tobacco.
After a while, as if waking from a dream, she spoke, “I couldn’t eat inside… And, thank you.”
She knew those pieces of evidence came from Zhou Linze—
The person she had never really liked growing up.
Not that she hated him.
It was just that Zhou Linze always felt hard to approach.
Even though he often had a faint smile on his lips, it never reached his eyes!
Whenever he spoke, it was either cutting or cold sarcasm.
Lin Yihuan still remembered when she just started high school. One time, caught in a sudden thunderstorm without an umbrella, about to get soaked, Zhou Linze appeared and without saying a word threw his raincoat over her.
She was about to thank him, but he said, “You don’t know how to avoid rain? Stupid, just get soaked!”
Soon after, Zhou Jifeng came with an extra umbrella and scolded his brother seriously, “Linze, stop bullying Yihuan!”
There were many moments like this.
Compared to that, gentle and elegant Zhou Jifeng was like a spring breeze—becoming the girl’s secret crush.
