After Rebirth, the Cold and Aloof Film Queen Always Wants to Cuddle with Me - Chapter 37
Chapter 37
As soon as Lin Ruijiao arrived in her room, she received a message from Sister Wang, and immediately called her back.
“Sister Wang, what’s up?” she asked, frowning slightly.
“Ruijiao, the crew for Qie Chu is apparently still in the planning stages, but so far there’s been no audition news. I just heard this from some other colleagues. Most likely tonight’s audition was just a sham. Did you go?” Sister Wang’s voice was full of urgency.
“I went. Indeed, something felt off,” Lin Ruijiao said calmly, taking off her coat and exchanging a glance with Jingjing beside her.
“Ah? How are you? Did anything happen to you?” Sister Wang’s voice suddenly rose several octaves on the other end.
“It’s okay, it’s been handled. I’m fine, don’t worry,” she quickly reassured her.
“It’s all my fault for not checking thoroughly beforehand. Looks like from now on I’ll have to be more careful with business matters…” Sister Wang blamed herself entirely.
“Don’t say that, Sister Wang. It’s my fault—I was too eager and got fooled. It’s not your fault…” Lin Ruijiao frowned deeply. Even though this was her second chance at life, she was still somewhat naive in certain ways. With Sister Wang’s protection ahead and Ye Ruihuan’s support behind her, her journey was actually quite smooth.
Thinking this, she felt a surge of gratitude: “Sister Wang, please don’t say that. It’s all my fault. Thank you for everything over all this time.” Her expression was sincere and serious.
“…Mm, you’re right. When you attend events alone, be sure to pay attention to your safety,” Sister Wang softly reminded her.
“Mm, thank you, Sister Wang.”
After this incident, Lin Ruijiao took a more relaxed attitude. Since there weren’t many good scripts lately, why force herself to scramble for resources? If worse came to worst, she could just contact Sister Ye Zhi more.
She also carefully selected the various invitations she received, no longer pushing herself as tightly as before. As a result, her schedule became more and more open. The weather was getting colder, so Lin Ruijiao decided to rest and recuperate at home, improving her planned schedule and further enhancing herself.
Because of this, she and Ye Ruihuan—who was usually idle—started meeting at home more often. Their relationship was better than before, though they still didn’t talk much.
While Lin Ruijiao went about her business as if the other person didn’t exist, Ye Ruihuan wanted to get closer but didn’t know how.
On another dark night, the wind outside howled louder and louder. Ye Ruihuan leaned against the headboard, her jet-black hair naturally falling forward. Her face showed no sign of sleep; her eyes were full of thought as her fingers gently stroked a jade safety amulet.
In recent days, most of her dreams were about her daily life with Lin Ruijiao—simple but very happy. She liked them. What she couldn’t get in reality, she achieved in dreams. Ye Ruihuan savored these sweet moments.
But suddenly, some obscure scenes struck her, and she furrowed her brow, the joy vanishing from her face.
The surroundings in the dream were unusually bright, but she was dressed in black and gray—depressed, obscure, gloomy…
She never thought she would look like this.
“Ye Ruihuan! If Lin Ruijiao dies, will you stop living too?!” The whole scene fell terrifyingly silent except for Ye Zhi’s angry voice.
Lin Ruijiao died??? Died… She stared at the people in the scene in disbelief.
“…” Ye Ruihuan lowered her head, speechless—or rather, showing no reaction at all.
The scenes shifted rapidly, showing the same background and characters but telling different stories.
“Ye Ruihuan, are you crazy? Has your mind broken?” Ye Zhi shouted, tears filling her eyes. “I support your charity work, but what’s this about selling off the business? You want to sell Hua Rui Entertainment? Are you out of your mind?”
“…Yes,” Ye Ruihuan said lightly, her gaze indifferent, completely emotionless, as calm and stifling as dried-up water.
“Is Hua Rui Entertainment yours alone? You just sell it when you want?” Ye Zhi’s tears fell freely.
“…Fine, except for your twenty percent shares, I’ll sell the rest,” her tone flat, like casually discussing what to eat today.
“Are you mad? That’s my heart and soul, and you say sell it just like that?!” Ye Zhi screamed hysterically.
But Ye Ruihuan sat with her head down, showing no response.
“Have you gone crazy from all that chanting?” Ye Zhi’s tears kept falling. After a long pause, she finally resolved, speaking slowly: “I’ll buy it with my own money.”
Leaving these words behind, Ye Zhi slammed the door and left. Ye Ruihuan remained calm, a deep deathly silence spreading from her bones…
The scene shifted again. She was dressed plainly in a temple, with the old monk they had seen before at the gala beside her, speaking quietly.
A guest was coming to see her.
Time passed. Ye Ruihuan dragged her long black hair across the threshold. Looking up, she was surprised to see two people before her, though her face showed no extra emotion—only calm.
“Ye Ruihuan, this is my husband Ye Junhua, and I’m pregnant,” Ye Zhi said happily.
Ye Ruihuan smiled lightly and nodded, “Congratulations.”
“You once said you had a connection to Buddhism and would become a nun at the temple—turns out you really did,” Ye Zhi glanced at her, then nodded a greeting to the old monk nearby.
“Do I look like a nun?” Ye Ruihuan’s smile deepened.
“…No,” Ye Zhi looked her up and down. Though she had a pure and peaceful aura, her delicate bare face made her stand out oddly in the temple, looking like a celestial being rather than a person of this world. Compared to before, they seemed like two different people.
“Hua Rui Entertainment is doing well under my hands, and your charity work is also running smoothly,” Ye Zhi reported every detail.
Seeing her full of grace and dignity, Ye Ruihuan nodded, “That’s good.” Then she raised her eyes to the sky—pale and boundless, empty—her hollow gaze lost in thought.
“Thank you. You’ve worked hard.” She smiled gently. “It’s getting cold and looks like rain. You should head back early.” With that, she turned and left.
“…Okay, I’m leaving,” Ye Junhua carefully helped her up.
The dream ended with a vast expanse of mist and the icy touch of the jade safety amulet in her hand.
In this dream, Ye Ruihuan woke up calmly for the first time. Despite the rapid changes and overwhelming information, she remembered everything in one go.
Lin Ruijiao died? She abandoned everything? Became a nun?
Ye Ruihuan couldn’t believe these things would really happen. Though shocked, these scenes were also a warning to her. In that moment, she couldn’t tell which news was harder to accept.
If it really happened, she thought, she might do such a thing herself.
Throughout the long night, Ye Ruihuan leaned against the headboard, thinking for a long time. It seemed she had also become calm and peaceful, like an old soul who had seen much and understood everything, finally letting go of the boundaries she once set for herself.
She could accept everything in the dream—except one thing: Lin Ruijiao’s death.
If she wasn’t there anymore, then what use was her pitiful pride?
