Chapter 20: Kissed by the Female Lead?!
â—Ž”Far from enough, Jie.”â—Ž
Yan Sui stammered, “Wha-what?”
“Jie, you’re asking me even though you know the answer.” Lu Shutian laughed cheerfully, then continued, “I told you that Jin Lan would be difficult to deal with. The producer told you, right?”
Yan Sui hummed in affirmation.
Lu Shutian giggled. “Jie, I can help you with this.”
There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
Yan Sui knew this principle well. Lu Shutian said she could help, but what would she want in return?
“Then…” Yan Sui was still trying to figure out how to respond when she was interrupted again.
Lu Shutian gave a little hum, then made whimpering, puppy-like sounds.
“Jie, I want to eat the food you make. Will you come to my place and cook a meal for me?”
Great. I’m going to be forced to drink again.
Yan Sui really wanted to poison herself to the point of being mute before going to Lu Shutian’s house.
“Host, don’t worry. I’ll remind you this time just like I did yesterday.”
Yan Sui sighed in her mind. “Okay, thank you, system.”
Ignoring Jian Liyun’s increasingly sour expression, Yan Sui agreed to Lu Shutian’s request.
“Do you really have to go?” Jian Liyun’s voice was so cold it could almost freeze Yan Sui.
Yan Sui cleared her throat. “I have to.”
Jian Liyun paused, originally intending to drop the matter, but she couldn’t resist.
She frowned. “But why do you have to collaborate with Jin Lan? As a director, she’s too inexperienced and has no notable works. If you’re worried about my future resources, I have a few directors I have a good relationship with. We can communicate with them.”
“It’s not the same…” Yan Sui mumbled, not knowing how to explain.
As the supporting female lead in the book, although Jian Liyun had good career luck, it was nothing compared to the male and female leads.
Yan Sui’s goal was to get more and better resources for Jian Liyun, as long as it didn’t cause the two leads to resent her.
In the early plot of the novel, Jin Lan was arguably the best and most cost-effective choice.
Jian Liyun didn’t press for more details.
She just lowered her eyes, her thick eyelashes trembling slightly with her emotions.
“Sui Sui,” Jian Liyun’s voice was tight. “You don’t need to go to such lengths for me. Besides… I’m worried about you.”
And my heart aches for you.
Drunk Yan Sui was certainly cute, but Jian Liyun was even more unwilling to see Yan Sui with a headache the next day after drinking.
That Lu Shutian was definitely not a good person.
Jian Liyun didn’t understand. Aren’t people in the entertainment industry supposed to be clever? Why is Yan Sui so eager to jump into a fire pit?
She knew the answer, actually.
She held herself back from thinking about it too much.
Yan Sui waved her hand. “It’s fine. Drinking a little from time to time is no big deal. Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. Besides, I’m your manager, so it’s natural for me to fight for a bright future for you.”
Jian Liyun’s eyes drooped, and she looked downcast and pitiful.
“Then you have to come home early.”
“Huh?” Yan Sui was confused. “I don’t have anything to do with you tomorrow. After I’m done at Miss Lu’s place tonight, I’ll go back to my own home.”
“I can’t sleep without you.”
Jian Liyun’s answer made Yan Sui recall the scene from the first day she transmigrated:
Jian Liyun swallowing sleeping pills with ice water, looking like she needed medication to be able to sleep.
The check-up report wasn’t out yet, so Yan Sui thought for a moment. “Okay, but you also have to promise me one thing.”
“Tell me.” Jian Liyun’s mood went from cloudy to sunny.
Yan Sui poked Jian Liyun’s arm. “Try not to take sleeping pills if you can. If you really can’t, why not try melatonin first?”
Jian Liyun grabbed the hand that was poking her arm. “Okay, but you have to supervise me for me to be a good girl.”
Yan Sui was helpless and amused. “I’m worried that you’ll be uncomfortable if I meddle too much. Your body is your own, okay?”
The driver arrived just then. As the two of them got into the car, Jian Liyun said, “Let’s drop you off at her place first.”
Yan Sui readily agreed. “Okay. When you go home tonight, you have to eat a good dinner.”
And don’t look at He Chenyu’s shitty script.
Of course, Yan Sui held back from saying that.
…
Forty minutes later.
Ding-dong.
Yan Sui pressed the video doorbell.
“Jie,” Lu Shutian’s voice came through. “Do you see the keypad?”
Yan Sui looked down. “I see it.”
“The code is 191519.”
Yan Sui raised an eyebrow. The female lead just told her the door code?
Isn’t she… a little too trusting of me?
But since Lu Shutian had said so, Yan Sui didn’t hesitate. She lightly tapped the code on the screen and opened the door.
It was a single-apartment-per-floor unit. As the door opened, the first thing she saw was the gray-toned entryway. There was a pair of white slippers there.
Yan Sui changed into the slippers and walked out of the entryway, where she saw a living room so big she had to turn her head from left to right to see all of it.
Huh? Where’s Lu Shutian?
“Jie,” Lu Shutian’s voice came from the right. “Come here quickly.”
Yan Sui followed the sound and found Lu Shutian busy in the kitchen.
Her medium-length hair, which was just past her collarbone, was tied up casually, but several strands had escaped and were hanging limply, brushing against her cheek as she moved.
Lu Shutian held an iron bowl in her right hand, and her left hand was covered in batter. “Jie, the tie on my apron came undone. Can you help me tie it?”
Yan Sui hurried over, took the two loose white ties, and retied them in two or three seconds.
“Weren’t you going to have me cook?” Yan Sui said, looking at the busy Lu Shutian.
The kitchen counter was filled with all sorts of ingredients. It looked like Lu Shutian was planning to make a full feast.
Lu Shutian smiled sweetly. “I just said that casually. You treated me to dinner last time, so this time I’ll cook for you, Jie.”
Yan Sui stood to the side, feeling a little helpless. “Is there anything I can help with? Maybe I can wash these vegetables first…”
“No need, no need. Just wait, Jie.”
After saying that, Lu Shutian went back to busying herself with the flour in the iron bowl. But a few seconds later, she couldn’t help but turn her head and sneeze.
Yan Sui stepped forward. “Why don’t I take over?”
Lu Shutian shook her head, her two small dimples appearing as she smiled. “No need, Jie. It’s just my hair keeps flying around my face, and it’s tickling me.”
Yan Sui cautiously suggested, “Then I can re-tie your hair? It’s not convenient for you since your hands are busy.”
“Okay,” Lu Shutian agreed happily.
Yan Sui carefully took off the hair tie, only to hear the other person tell her not to move.
“Jie, don’t tie my hair yet. I think I tied it too tight just now, and my scalp hurts a little. I need a moment to let it recover.”
“Oh, okay,” Yan Sui replied.
Then Yan Sui saw Lu Shutian move her neck and shake her head, causing her hair to sway.
The swaying hair covered Lu Shutian’s face, making her expression unreadable.
Yan Sui held the white hair tie in her hand, standing diagonally behind Lu Shutian. She raised her hand to the level of the other person’s chin, ready to tie her hair as soon as Lu Shutian was relaxed.
But she didn’t expect Lu Shutian to turn her head with such a wide movement. Yan Sui’s palm felt a tingling, numb sensation—
First, the strands of hair brushed against her palm, and then…
It was Lu Shutian’s soft lips.
Yan Sui froze in place. Lu Shutian, however, acted as if nothing had happened, saying indifferently, “Sorry, Jie, I accidentally bumped into you.”
“It was not an accident.”
“System, can you not cause trouble right now?”
After saying that in her mind, Yan Sui cleared her throat, pretending that nothing had happened. “It’s fine. Do you feel better now? If so, should I tie your hair?”
The corners of Lu Shutian’s lips curled into a smile, but this smile was not as sweet as usual. Instead, it was full of desire and greed.
“Not enough, Jie,” Lu Shutian’s eyes narrowed with her smile. “I’m far from being comfortable enough.”
