After I Cheated on the Heiress of a Powerful Family - Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Wen Yan waited for her event while Xie Buyi remained seated alone in his usual spot, headphones on, eyes closed, lost in music.
After some time, a distant cheer seeped through the headphones. Xie Buyi opened his eyes to see classmates in the front row excitedly high-fiving each other.
Removing his headphones, he was bombarded by enthusiastic chatter.
“Wen Yan is incredible! She actually cleared such a high bar! Has she done sports training before?”
“First place! Our class won first place today!”
“This year’s vibe feels different! Maybe we won’t be last anymore. Let’s write some motivational articles and submit them to earn extra points!”
“Did you hear how many events Wen Yan signed up for?”
“Quite a few! It seems she won’t stop as long as the schedules don’t clash and will participate in almost everything.”
“Look, Wen Yan’s back!”
Winning gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump, Wen Yan pocketed a couple of small prize vouchers she could later redeem at the prize office.
The top three awards were all notebooks, with smaller items like pens and sticky notes following. Wen Yan wasn’t particularly attached to these kinds of rewards and planned to ask around the class to see who wanted them and give them away.
Before even reaching the classroom, she noticed many classmates waving. Looking around, she didn’t see anyone nearby until she got closer and heard them calling her name.
Upon entering the classroom, a crowd gathered upfront, all eager to see the medals hanging around her neck.
“Wow! A gold medal and a silver one too!”
“It really is gold! Wen Yan, you’re amazing!”
“Want some water? Is there another event coming up?”
“Gold medal! Can I touch it? Please?”
“Good thing I got here first; I don’t have an event soon.”
Wen Yan, unaccustomed to this kind of star treatment, carefully took off her medals and handed them around.
The medals passed from hand to hand, eliciting curious expressions and “wow”s all around.
Grabbing a bottle of mineral water from the teacher’s supply, Wen Yan returned to her seat, took a sip, and smiled, “How’s that? Pretty awesome, right? If you say you want a gold medal, you can have one!”
Xie Buyi’s expression darkened. Without a word, he moved his stool aside, putting distance between himself and Wen Yan.
Blinking in surprise, Wen Yan thought for a moment, gathered back the medals she had handed out, and offered them to Xie Buyi like a bouquet, “Here! Promise, your medal!”
Xie Buyi’s face grew colder as he pushed them away, “No need.”
Undeterred, Wen Yan wiped the medal clean with a tissue and showed it to him, “How about now? I polished it!”
Xie Buyi remained silent.
Reflecting on the soy milk incident, Wen Yan seriously pondered Xie Buyi’s change in attitude. She guessed that he turned cold because she had also given Fang Sihui some soy milk—a bit like someone being mistreated by others and then taking out their frustration at home. The proud eldest daughter was clearly unique and disliked being treated like everyone else. She craved special, exclusive VIP treatment.
Dedicated to her, gifts didn’t have to be expensive, just one-of-a-kind!
—“One Hundred Ways to Charm Xie Buyi”
Wrapping the medal ribbon carefully, Wen Yan stuffed it into his pocket and coaxed smoothly, “I won the gold medal this afternoon, and I won’t give it to anyone else. Only you can touch it, okay?”
Xie Buyi took out the gold medal and tossed it back, “Give it to whoever you want. What does it have to do with me?”
Wen Yan quickly declared, crossing four fingers, “I love you. Only you. You’re my best friend, so you’re the most important!”
Xie Buyi ignored her without a second thought, but Wen Yan didn’t back away even after the rejection.
Finally, after a long effort to coax him, Wen Yan sighed inwardly:
Making friends with Xie Buyi is really tough. Falling in love and coaxing someone shouldn’t be this hard, right?
Because the opening ceremony and speeches took too long, only three events were held before the sports meet ended at 11:30, allowing students to eat earlier.
Junior high finished half an hour earlier, staggering lunch times with the high school.
Xie Buyi still planned to return to the classroom to wait for the quick meal, but Wen Yan took him straight to the cafeteria.
Since the playground was between the cafeteria and classroom, going back to the classroom then to the cafeteria was an unnecessary detour, especially with Wen Yan’s work-study duties.
Although the cafeteria was busy due to staggered lunch times, finding empty seats wasn’t difficult.
Wen Yan picked a spot for Xie to get food and hurried off to work in the cafeteria kitchen.
She expected Xie Buyi to wait for her after eating, since their friendship had quickly deepened. It wasn’t impossible he might wait a little while.
But after a while, when she looked back, his seat was empty.
Xie Buyi was so indifferent—so cold!
Around 12:10, with the cafeteria now quiet and empty, Wen Yan finished her shift early.
She ate quickly and returned to the classroom.
All the stools had been moved to the playground; only the desks remained, with no seats to be found.
The sports day ended early by half an hour. Besides Wen Yan and Xie Buyi, the day students chose to go home, and dorm students returned to rest or study.
Back in the classroom, Xie Buyi was the only one seated at a desk.
Wen Yan snorted quietly, entered through the back door carrying a stool, dropped it loudly, and glanced at Xie Buyi as she sat down.
“I’m sitting here for you. No need to give excuses.”
Xie glanced at her without hesitation, and Wen Yan felt like she was being stared at by a stubborn child throwing a tantrum. Annoyed, she said, “Hey! Thanks for that look!”
It was clearly Xie’s choice not to wait for her!
How could a good friend do that without saying a word? That was too much!
Xie shifted his gaze away, saying casually, “I don’t need it.”
Wen Yan spun around like a top, grumbling under her breath, flipping through her papers until stopping on a blank page. She picked up a pen and started on the problems.
After trying a couple of questions, she remembered her purpose—being a loyal supporter to gain favor with Xie Buqi—and realized she shouldn’t be mad at the eldest lady.
No point in being angry.
She took a moment to compose herself but couldn’t shake the disappointment fully. After quietly reciting the word “scholarship” several times, she finally spoke up:
“I borrowed two stools from the office. The one I brought is outside the back door for you.”
Whether Xie sat down or not, she loved him! She wanted to be his loyal follower, but sometimes it was just impossible!
After a while, she heard the faint sound of a stool being dragged over. Xie Buyi had moved it closer.
Wen Yan kept her head down, still lost in thought. After reciting “scholarship” silently a dozen more times, she finally focused and began writing.
The only sound in the quiet classroom was the scratching of pen on paper until a voice broke the silence.
“I had a stomach ache, so I came back for medicine.”
“You’re busy. I was hurting, so I left first.”
No intention to wait for you.
