- Chapter 21 - Becoming a Heartless Woman
When Shi Qing heard the truth, she froze for a moment, clearly not expecting such an outcome. Had all her meticulous preparations been for nothing?
Yet she wasn’t truly disappointed; instead, a faint sweetness stirred within her heart.
“Really?”
Shi Qing couldn’t explain her sudden elation, but she pressed her luck, questioning He Roushuang further.
The kitchen still carried a faint aroma of cooking. He Roushuang nodded, the lingering taste of Shi Qing’s lips still on her tongue.
“I have no reason to lie to you.”
Her words rang true. As if to avoid further entanglement with the female lead, she twitched her nose like a well-behaved kitten.
“It smells so good,” Shi Qing said. “What’s in this house?”
He Roushuang approached the dishes on the kitchen counter. They were simple home-style meals, yet each dish was a feast for the senses, making her mouth water.
As expected of the female lead, He Roushuang thought with a touch of envy. She’s a master of all trades, excelling at everything.
Unlike herself, who was a complete kitchen disaster. Even when following recipes step by step, He Roushuang couldn’t resist adding her own “creative” touches, inevitably leading to culinary catastrophes.
“I only know how to make these few dishes,” Shi Qing said, feeling slightly awkward. “I can’t handle high-end ingredients…”
She really only cooked with common market vegetables—potatoes, onions, and other cheap, abundant produce.
As for premium ingredients like sea cucumber and abalone, Shi Qing was still clumsy with them, but she was learning.
Her growth had been rapid, and she was quickly assimilating into this extravagant, decadent world.
When she first bought clothes, she’d been startled by the price tags with their three or four zeros. Now, she could swipe her card without even raising an eyebrow.
If someone wanted to rise quickly to wealth and prominence, initial investment was essential. Shi Qing understood this deeply.
She needed to become more beautiful, more refined, more skilled at dressing well, and more adept at pleasing others—all to firmly secure her sister’s heart.
Looking down at her outfit, she smiled wryly. Had this been a mistake?
But…
Shi Qing remained skeptical. He Roushuang’s words meant nothing; she had to stay vigilant.
If that “white moonlight” really did return to the country and tried to steal her away, Shi Qing would stand no chance.
“It’s okay,” He Roushuang said, smiling and patting Shi Qing’s shoulder. “Even eating lavish meals every day gets tiring.”
Her words rang true. He Roushuang had once fantasized that if she ever became wealthy, she would gorge herself on seafood and steak until she couldn’t eat another bite.
But after experiencing the life of the wealthy for just a few days, she understood the meaning of satiation and weariness that comes from having every desire fulfilled.
It was like returning home for the Lunar New Year, where people gorge themselves on rich, meaty dishes until they crave light, refreshing vegetables.
“And you can learn at your own pace…”
He Roushuang’s cheeks flushed slightly as she spoke. Not long ago, she had been a penniless working dog, barely better off financially than the female lead, except without debt collectors hounding her like dogs.
But…
Now she was a President—a female President!
She needed to establish her own commanding presence.
He Roushuang straightened her back, refusing to show any weakness. If she lost her edge in her confrontation with the male lead, she could be forced to marry that balding, yellow-toothed old man at any moment.
Without a System to rely on, she had to proceed cautiously, taking each step with utmost care.
Though He Roushuang’s soul had transmigrated, her taste buds remained largely unchanged. She could still enjoy the foods she had always loved.
Throughout the meal, Shi Qing radiated pure delight, savoring each bite as if it were a dish prepared by a master chef.
Shi Qing couldn’t resist stealing a glance at He Roushuang, her heart fluttering with excitement. Sister He likes my cooking!
After finishing her meal, He Roushuang quickly washed up and decided to rest. But…
The moment she closed her eyes, she was haunted by memories of Shi Qing’s previous nighttime ambushes. She simply couldn’t bring herself to shut her eyes.
(If you sleep with someone, you have to take responsibility…)
He Roushuang repeated the mantra in her mind, desperately suppressing the longing that welled up from her heart. In truth, Shi Qing had been incredibly attentive to her needs these past few days.
Even if it was just a contractual arrangement, He Roushuang, this “mosquito coil,” couldn’t help but feel her heart stir.
Unexpectedly, He Roushuang remained wide awake until well past midnight, her eyelids growing heavy and beginning to droop.
Yet Shi Qing never made a single move out of line. He Roushuang couldn’t resist peeking her head out from under the covers, like a kitten emerging from its den.
In the dim light, Shi Qing slept soundly, her breathing even and steady. She had been asleep for hours.
He Roushuang: ……
Fine, my heart!
He Roushuang simply closed her eyes. After what felt like an eternity, the pure face illuminated by the dim nightlight stirred.
Shi Qing slowly opened her eyes.
(Why is He Roushuang avoiding me?)
If it was just to provoke her younger brother, she should have used me and thrown me away. Why did she take me in and let me stay in her mansion?
Even allowing me into her bed.
Shi Qing pressed her lips together. She wasn’t the type to give up on things she couldn’t understand; she was determined to figure them out.
But… now wasn’t the right time. They hadn’t yet reached a deeper level of intimacy, let alone understood the true thoughts in her sister’s heart.
So she slowly moved closer, her delicate skin brushing against the silk sheets.
Shi Qing reached out, her breath catching in her throat, her fingertips trembling.
But she finally pulled He Roushuang into her arms.
In the soft glow of the nightlight, Shi Qing lowered her head, her cool lips boldly and audaciously pressing against He Roushuang’s forehead.
“Good night, Sister He,” she whispered.
He Roushuang slept soundly. She had to admit, the original owner’s million-dollar mattress was incredibly comfortable. She never imagined a mattress could cost so much.
But such deep sleep came with a price.
When He Roushuang woke again, she found herself nestled in a soft, warm embrace.
A delicate floral fragrance, like roses, filled her nostrils.
Wait a minute…
Her nose was touching something soft and fluffy?!
He Roushuang jolted awake, all traces of sleep vanishing. She realized she had somehow rolled back into Shi Qing’s arms.
The female lead was so pure and innocent, and she had fallen asleep later than Shi Qing. There was only one explanation: her own hands and feet had been up to no good!
He Roushuang felt like dying on the spot. She had always sworn to maintain distance from Shi Qing, yet here she was, uncontrollably burrowing into the beauty’s embrace in the middle of the night.
This was truly…
At this thought, He Roushuang carefully tried to withdraw her hand. But the moment she moved, before she could fully pull it away…
The person before her opened those beautiful eyes, their amber and deep black hues intertwined.
“Good morning, Sister He,” Shi Qing greeted, her smile as radiant as a blooming flower.
He Roushuang: I’m done for. I want to die even more now.
If she let go of the embrace now, she’d feel like a scum woman—the kind who hooks up at a bar and then ghosts the guy the next morning.
