- Chapter 33 - Preventing the Male Lead from Pulling Out His Oxygen Tube
Shi Qing was diligently fulfilling her duties. After applying He Roushuang’s medicine, she went to prepare breakfast, maintaining their routine for the past few days.
As He Roushuang leaned against the large bed, she mused:
The Male Lead has been living this idyllic life all along. It must be blissfully satisfying.
Yet he still pines for his white moonlight.
What a complete scumbag!
After rolling around in bed for a while longer, He Roushuang finally got up at her own leisurely pace.
On a normal day, she would have tidied up and prepared to go to the office, even though the documents under her supervision were as incomprehensible as ancient texts. But with repeated exposure, she was gradually starting to grasp their patterns.
Today, however, she didn’t need to go. This wasn’t because it was the weekend or a holiday.
It was because He Roushuang was feigning injury. Since she was supposed to be injured, she couldn’t possibly recover so quickly.
She needed to maintain the facade of a weak and helpless woman for several more days to convince everyone around her that her violent younger brother had indeed beaten her severely.
As everyone knows, rumors spread like wildfire in a spring breeze.
He Roushuang was supremely confident in this.
After all, she had plenty of informants within the company.
Quietly waiting for He Shanjian’s reputation to crumble was a deeply satisfying experience.
After finishing her morning routine, He Roushuang went to the kitchen and saw Shi Qing’s busy figure. She found this sight quite comforting.
“If only… you weren’t the female lead of a romance novel,” He Roushuang murmured regretfully. If that were the case, she could pursue her without reservation. The reason she hesitated was because she couldn’t decipher Shi Qing’s true feelings.
Does she love me, or does she love my wealth?
After all, Shi Qing was the kind of ruthless person who would endure even the Male Lead’s vile temper for money.
He Roushuang rested her cheek in her hand, lost in thought. By the time she snapped out of her reverie, Shi Qing had already brought out breakfast.
He Roushuang’s gaze fixed on the delicate steamed buns Shi Qing carried—each one meticulously shaped like rabbits, pandas, and other adorable figures.
Tears of envy welled up in her eyes.
As expected of the Female Lead. She remembered her own clumsy attempts at making these pastries, when Shi Qing’s creations had been shapeless lumps of dough. Now, they rivaled the work of professional pastry chefs.
What a maddeningly talented genius.
Though He Roushuang hated to admit it, she had experienced it firsthand.
Shi Qing’s kissing skills were improving at an astonishing rate, even becoming teasing and seductive. Forget about being gay; even a straight woman would find it hard to resist.
Gender aside, such skill…
It would leave anyone craving more.
Damn it!
I’m even more jealous now.
He Roushuang still showed proper respect, unlike the male leads in novels who always took only a few hurried bites, wasting the Female Lead’s effort in waking up early to prepare the meal.
She finished most of it.
Maybe trying to get along with Shi Qing wouldn’t be so bad after all?
If Shi Qing ever truly fell for someone else, she could let go. After all…
He Roushuang couldn’t hold onto her heart.
Loving someone destined to leave was a painful prospect.
But that’s just how people are.
For that fleeting moment of infatuation, they’ll pursue the impossible, knowing it’s futile.
“Did you like it?” Shi Qing asked, her eyes shining with anticipation, like a chef in a gourmet anime awaiting the judges’ scores.
“It’s delicious. You’ve improved,” He Roushuang said warmly, giving her a thumbs-up.
“If you like it, Sister…” Shi Qing murmured, her voice barely audible. Every time He Roushuang thought they were about to become close friends, Shi Qing would suddenly adopt a bashful expression, reminding her that Shi Qing saw her as a potential romantic interest.
This is practically seducing someone into committing a crime, He Roushuang thought.
She lowered her head to eat, trying to avoid admiring Shi Qing’s dazzling beauty, hoping to keep her mind from wandering into inappropriate thoughts.
But such peaceful moments never last. Just as He Roushuang finished her meal, her phone rang urgently.
Of course, she thought. Whether male or female, CEOs are always bombarded with calls.
“Young Miss, the Chairman was hospitalized last night. His condition has improved slightly today, but he had previously forbidden anyone from knowing about his illness.”
“I only just learned about this myself.”
He Roushuang’s network of spies and informants all sent her the same message. These were trusted confidantes she had cultivated after joining the company, her own loyal inner circle.
Fortunately, having read the novel, she could easily identify the troublemakers surrounding the Original Owner and the spies the Male Lead had bribed.
Even with only vague memories, she couldn’t recall exactly who they were. But if there was even the slightest possibility, she would have them fired or transferred to a branch office.
She refused to let herself be tainted by even the slightest danger.
Sell them off! Sell them all!
He Roushuang was ruthless and merciless in her actions, but because it aligned with the Original Owner’s character, no one dared to complain.
She even secretly planted several spies and informants around the Male Lead.
But the Male Lead was, after all, the Male Lead.
His counter-intelligence skills were formidable.
None of the people He Roushuang had infiltrated had yet gained his trust or been given any real authority.
After ending the call, He Roushuang’s expression turned grim. Shi Qing, with her keen ability to read people, immediately sensed that He Roushuang was facing a problem.
But she didn’t interrupt, patiently waiting for the call to end.
“What’s wrong?”
“My father’s been hospitalized.”
He Roushuang didn’t try to hide it, but the fact that she hadn’t received this news directly from her father felt unsettling.
“Can I come with you?”
Shi Qing blurted out the question almost instinctively. She wanted to grow closer to He Roushuang, to make her sister unable to live without her, so she could boldly and shamelessly demand love and affection.
But as soon as the words left her lips, Shi Qing regretted them.
Her status was precarious—she was just a mistress.
Would the Chairman of such a massive conglomerate take her seriously?
Probably not.
Shi Qing was acutely aware that her status couldn’t be publicly acknowledged.
She didn’t feel humiliated by this. Being her sister’s lover, she considered herself fortunate in a way.
“I’m sorry, my position might make it difficult for me to attend.”
“It was my oversight,” He Roushuang replied.
Shi Qing quickly apologized, not out of self-pity, but genuinely regretting her ill-conceived suggestion.
“It’s fine,” He Roushuang assured her. “Besides, my father and He Shanjian already know. When our scandal was all over the news, he must have seen the high-definition reports.”
“Your presence won’t matter.”
He Roushuang gripped the Female Lead’s wrist tightly, fulfilling her initial intention: to bolster the other woman’s confidence.
Shi Qing placed the bowl in the dishwasher and followed He Roushuang out. In a sense, this was her first time meeting her “father-in-law.”
She felt strangely nervous.
He Roushuang contacted the driver, her mind racing with worry. Would the Male Lead try to disconnect He Wenzhi’s oxygen tank?
After all, whether in the novel or reality, the father-son relationship had plummeted to freezing point.
Dear cheap old man, He Roushuang silently pleaded, hang in there! I’m rushing to stop the Male Lead from pulling your oxygen tube!
