Chapter 12: Meeting The Parents This Early?!
Ji Wanmian froze in place, her fingers still wet, staring blankly at the text message on her phone in silence for a long time.
What kind of fate is this—
Once she snapped out of it, Ji Wanmian smacked her forehead in regret, wishing she had picked up the call earlier.
She bit her lower lip, torn about whether to call back.
But Pei Jinyue had told her not to call first.
Just as she hesitated, her phone rang again, startling her so much she nearly dropped it. She quickly glanced at the caller ID.
It was Pei Jinyue.
Frantically, Ji Wanmian answered, worried that even a second’s delay might cause her to miss the call.
Luckily, she made it in time.
Pei Jinyue’s voice came through the line. “Ji Wanmian.”
Suppressing her racing heart, Ji Wanmian responded, “What is it?”
Pei Jinyue said concisely, “I’ll send you an address. It’s my home. Come here. I’ll meet you downstairs.”
Ji Wanmian blinked, slightly more composed now, and cautiously asked, “What for?”
“To meet…” Pei Jinyue paused briefly before continuing, “my mom.”
Ji Wanmian’s eyes widened, too shocked to speak as countless questions raced through her mind—
Meeting the parents already?! Isn’t this a bit too fast?! Didn’t they just confirm their relationship yesterday?!
Or… maybe Pei Jinyue had liked her for a long time?
Thinking this, Ji Wanmian couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at her lips, and quickly agreed, “Okay, I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
“Alright.” Before ending the call, Pei Jinyue added, “Be careful.”
“Okay!” Ji Wanmian beamed at the concern in her voice, nodding like a happy little bird.
After hanging up, she checked the address. She’d been in that area before while searching for inspiration—it wasn’t too far.
She scratched her head, initially intending to leave immediately, but as soon as she reached the door and caught her reflection in the mirror, she paused.
She couldn’t just show up like this to meet Pei Jinyue and her mother!
Ji Wanmian rushed back to her wardrobe, pulled out her prettiest dress, paired it with a light jacket—never mind the cold—and put it on.
Then she hurried back to her vanity, pinned her hair back, and started applying makeup. Maybe because she was in a good mood and everything was going smoothly, her eyeliner came out flawlessly. She finished with lipstick to add a healthy glow.
Not bad.
Probably what Pei Jinyue would like.
Admiring herself in the mirror for a few seconds, she quickly grabbed her bag to leave. But just as she reached the door and saw her bare wrist, she spun around, put on the bracelet Pei Jinyue had given her, and then finally left.
It was freezing.
As she walked, Ji Wanmian trembled from head to toe.
The cold wind felt like knives slicing her skin.
But even so, she wouldn’t turn back for a bulky down jacket.
It was fine. She could endure it.
It was all so she could show up looking beautiful at Pei Jinyue’s home.
“Wanmian!”
A voice called from behind.
Ji Wanmian turned and saw Lu Yu walking toward her.
“You’re going out…” Lu Yu paused mid-sentence, seeing Ji Wanmian, and started complimenting her, “Wow, you look so good! This style really suits you!”
Mumbling a few “thank yous,” Ji Wanmian shyly lowered her head. She wasn’t quite sure why, but ever since their last meeting, she had a feeling Lu Yu might not be straight—maybe it was her “gaydar” that had kicked in since realizing she was a lesbian.
“I’m in a good mood today, so I bought a bunch of groceries to cook lunch. Want to join me?” Lu Yu held up the groceries, smiling.
Though Ji Wanmian was tempted, she shook her head, knowing she had to rush over to Pei Jinyue’s. She politely declined, “Sorry, I have to meet my girl—”
She abruptly cut herself off, probably too excited about being with Pei Jinyue and almost blurting out to the world that she was her girlfriend.
Lu Yu didn’t seem to notice anything strange. She just nodded and said, “Then go. Even if she seems patient, you shouldn’t keep her waiting.”
Not thinking much of it, and in a hurry, Ji Wanmian waved goodbye and got into the car she’d ordered.
Only after sitting inside did she realize something was off with what Lu Yu had said—how did she know she was talking about Pei Jinyue?!
Could it be that during their run-in the day before, Lu Yu had already picked up on something…
The more Ji Wanmian thought about it, the more she felt Lu Yu wasn’t so simple.
Oh well, no time to dwell on that now.
Ji Wanmian looked at the location Pei Jinyue had sent her.
To be honest, just thinking about how she was headed to Pei Jinyue’s house to meet her family made Ji Wanmian’s heart race.
She was so nervous.
Trying to distract herself with her phone, she quickly got carsick.
With no choice, she gazed out the window instead.
The city’s scenery blurred past the glass, like snapshots from deep within her memory.
If time could rewind to the year she first met Pei Jinyue, it wasn’t even Jinyue herself, but her privileged background that stood out the most.
Ji Wanmian had heard about it, but never dug too deep—she truly felt her feelings for Pei Jinyue were pure.
People said she was clever, that she knew to hang around the wealthy, and Ji Wanmian wanted to deny it. But how could she explain herself? Could she really run up to everyone and say, “I’m not after her money—I just want to treat her well”?
But now, Ji Wanmian felt a little regret—not for not being greedy, but for not paying more attention when people talked about Pei Jinyue’s background. If she had, maybe she wouldn’t feel so nervous about this visit.
During the ride, Ji Wanmian rehearsed countless scenarios in her head—how to greet them, start a conversation, how to present her best self.
Since Pei Jinyue had chosen her, she had to live up to that. She couldn’t let Jinyue be embarrassed.
Her phone rang again, interrupting her thoughts. She picked it up—another call from Pei Jinyue.
“Are you almost here?” Pei Jinyue asked.
Ji Wanmian glanced at the trip details. “Almost. Less than ten minutes.”
“Okay.” Pei Jinyue said, “Have the driver stop by the roadside. I’m coming down to meet you.”
“Got it!” Ji Wanmian replied.
Suddenly, a loud clatter came through the phone, something clearly falling to the ground.
Hearing the sound, Ji Wanmian asked curiously, “Did something fall?”
Pei Jinyue didn’t explain, just answered with a simple, “Yeah.”
Ji Wanmian didn’t push further and obediently ended the call. Holding her phone, she gazed out the window again, wondering where Pei Jinyue would appear to meet her.
Through the glass, she caught sight of her own smiling reflection.
Maybe it was the thought of Pei Jinyue standing somewhere up ahead waiting for her—it filled Ji Wanmian with an odd sense of peace.
As if they’d already been together for a long, long time.
