Chapter 23: You’re Not Very Good at Kissing.
It was Ji Wanmian who took the initiative.
The kiss landed gently, like a dragonfly skimming the water—brief and fleeting—not as intense as before.
After pulling away from Pei Jinyue, Ji Wanmian shyly turned her face to the side, completely immersed in the tingling sensation still lingering on her lips.
She was usually so timid, even she didn’t know how she had mustered the courage to lean in like that.
Maybe because she had wanted this kiss for a long time.
Pei Jinyue, however, didn’t look away. She stared straight at Ji Wanmian and calmly said, “You’re not very good at kissing.”
Why would she point out such a flaw right after the kiss!
Ji Wanmian’s face turned beet red, her eyes wide and unblinking, as if she might explode from sheer embarrassment.
“I…” Ji Wanmian lowered her head, tightly gripping the hem of her shirt, crumpling it into a wrinkled mess. After a while, her voice faded away, too shy to say what she really wanted to—
“Then… maybe you could teach me.”
But Pei Jinyue stood up, brushed her hair back, and walked toward the living room. “Then keep drawing,” she said. “I’m going to play on my phone for a bit.”
Ji Wanmian blinked in disbelief.
How could someone flirt and run away so quickly?
She honestly thought Pei Jinyue would lean in and kiss her again, but instead, she told her to get back to work!
As if reading her mind, Pei Jinyue turned around halfway and added, “Can you focus now? Be sure to work hard.”
Ji Wanmian smiled helplessly and nodded. She couldn’t exactly go and interrogate her, so she channeled her feelings into motivation for work.
To be honest, it actually worked—she was more focused than before. Mostly because the moment she got distracted, her mind would replay those blush-inducing scenes.
She picked up her pen and resumed drawing.
Every day, she drew.
Drew until the sky darkened, until time became a blur.
She could clearly track her characters’ progression through every panel and line—but when it came to real life…
What day is it again?
Unlike water that leaves behind a splash, time left no trace at all. Blink once, and the whole day had vanished.
Every minute and second slipped away in the small, daily routines. A couple of sentences, a bit of phone scrolling, and time had escaped her.
Whenever she finished her work, Ji Wanmian would go out with Pei Jinyue—shopping for groceries, eating a big meal, watching a movie, and ending the night with a kiss. That’s how their days went.
But sometimes new things happened. Like one day, Ji Wanmian suddenly got a message from someone with a fish icon. Since she rarely used name labels, she guessed from the icon that it was Lu Yu.
They hadn’t talked in a while, so Ji Wanmian felt a bit curious and clicked on the message quickly.
Little Fish Looking for Water:
“Wanmian, I remember your makeup looked really good when I saw you last time, so sorry to bother you—could you take a look at my makeup today?”

Ji Wanmian opened the photo and fell silent.
Why did a naturally pretty girl manage to make her makeup look so… unfitting?
If it weren’t for her cute facial features peeking through, Ji Wanmian might not even have recognized her as Lu Yu.
But, being the helpful girl she was, Ji Wanmian didn’t give up easily.
She replied:
“Looks pretty good! Next time you can try a different style. If you don’t mind, I can teach you.”
From then on, she patiently guided Lu Yu step-by-step. If it was too cold to meet in person, she would video call to teach her.
After many days of effort, Lu Yu’s makeup skills had clearly improved.
Lu Yu:
“Thanks, Wanmian~ I didn’t want to bother you over this, but I wanted to look nice for an important day and didn’t know who else to ask.”
Ji Wanmian:
“Aiya, don’t mention it—we’re friends! Honestly, my makeup skills are just so-so hahaha.”
She acted humble, but after replying, Ji Wanmian lay on her bed grinning proudly, her smile full of self-satisfaction. All those years of daily makeup in college were paying off.
She nodded to herself—having a crush on Pei Jinyue really did push her to improve.
When Pei Jinyue later heard about it, she tried to recall where she might have seen Lu Yu before.
Ji Wanmian pouted and turned away, pretending to be upset. “Don’t tell me you knew her before you knew me?”
“Not exactly,” Pei Jinyue replied. “I just remember seeing her somewhere. I didn’t even know her name until a few days ago.”
“Oh…” Ji Wanmian didn’t want to press further, but her curiosity got the better of her. “You see so many people every day—why do you remember someone you only met once?”
Pei Jinyue rested her chin on her hand and thought for a bit. “I don’t really know. It happened so long ago, but for some reason, she’s stuck in my head.”
“I see.” Ji Wanmian deliberately drew out her words, hoping Pei Jinyue would pick up on her subtle jealousy.
The old Pei Jinyue might not have noticed, but she’d changed—now, she could sense Ji Wanmian’s mood from the tiniest shift in her expression. Sometimes, she’d even go out of her way to comfort her.
Ji Wanmian grew happier with each passing day. Every night before bed, she’d look at the peacefully sleeping face beside her and think—
Being with Pei Jinyue will only get better and better from here on.
Maybe it was the shorter daylight in winter, maybe it was because it was the last month of the year, or maybe she was just too happy every day—but to Ji Wanmian, this month flew by far too quickly.
