Chapter 24: Of All Days, It Had to Be Today.
Looking at the calendar, there were only five days left until New Year’s Eve.
As usual, Ji Wanmian woke up early. She gently removed Pei Jinyue’s arm from her body, carefully got out of bed, tucked the blanket back over her, and tiptoed into the bathroom to wash up.
After getting ready, she bundled herself up in a thick down coat, hat, and scarf. She quietly closed the door behind her, afraid any noise might wake Pei Jinyue.
She followed her usual route to buy breakfast, wanting to get back quickly so that Pei Jinyue could eat a hot meal as soon as she woke up.
Suddenly, someone stood directly in her path.
A woman in a black coat—elegant and stern. Well-maintained, she didn’t look her age at all.
Naturally, it was also impossible to guess what she was thinking.
In that brief moment of eye contact, Ji Wanmian’s heart gave a jolt. Her foot, mid-step, froze in the air before slowly landing. She instinctively swallowed and found herself speechless.
The woman spoke first:
“Long time no see, Miss Ji.”
Her tone was polite and gentle on the surface, but to Ji Wanmian, it sent a chill down her spine.
Flustered, Ji Wanmian fidgeted with her scarf. Though her hands trembled from nerves, she tried her best to stay composed.
“Mrs. Pei, it has been a while.”
Pei Yan curled her lips into a slight smile, not looking directly at Ji Wanmian as she tugged at her gloves.
“Good. At least you still remember me.”
How could she possibly forget?
But Ji Wanmian only dared to think it, not say it aloud. She kept her head down, staring at the ground like she might see flowers bloom on the pavement.
“Miss Ji, it’s quite cold out. Why don’t we talk inside that café?” Pei Yan glanced at the café beside them.
Ji Wanmian looked up, following her gaze, hesitating. She wondered if she should text Pei Jinyue first so she wouldn’t worry when she woke up and couldn’t find her.
Pei Yan remained patient and smiled.
“There’s no need to be afraid.”
“I’m not afraid. I just…” Ji Wanmian waved her hand and bit her lower lip, unsure whether she should say more.
“You just want to let Jinyue know where you are?” Pei Yan read her expression and guessed it immediately.
Since her thoughts were already laid bare, Ji Wanmian gave up trying to hide them and nodded honestly.
Pei Yan let out a quiet laugh—emotionless—and said:
“Miss Ji, the reason I came here today is to tell you how Jinyue has deceived you.”
Ji Wanmian frowned in confusion.
“What do you mean by ‘deceived by Jinyue’?”
Pei Yan raised an eyebrow, a flash of surprise crossing her face.
“You mean… you still don’t know anything?”
“Know what? Mrs. Pei, if you’re saying all this just to make me leave Jinyue, I’m sorry—I can’t do that.” Ji Wanmian didn’t want to hear any more. She quickly apologized, intending to leave.
But Pei Yan’s next sentence stopped her in her tracks—
“What if I told you I know about the relationship between Jinyue and that girl called Niannian?”
Niannian.
Just hearing that name made Ji Wanmian’s heart ache again.
To be honest, she did want to hear more.
So she turned back and looked at Pei Yan.
“What relationship?”
“Let’s talk inside the café.” Pei Yan smiled faintly, then turned and walked in first.
Ji Wanmian hesitated no longer. She took a step forward and followed.
She wanted to pull out the thorn in her heart—and to do that, she needed the truth.
No matter how painful the truth might be, she chose to face it head-on.
Just then, a snowflake drifted down from the sky.
Ji Wanmian reached out her hand and caught it. It was snowing.
The flake melted from the warmth of her skin, turning into a droplet of water, slipping from her fingertip to the ground.
Gone without a trace.
She withdrew her hand and stepped into the café.
She had lived in this city for years and had never seen it snow.
And yet, of all days, it had to be today.
