Chapter 25: She’s Still the Same 1.2
The Only Thing Left
It was the same shoulder that had been bruised from a fall just moments ago.
But Ji Wanmian didn’t have time to think about that—because she caught a strong whiff of alcohol on Pei Jinyue.
Just how much had she drunk?
She looked up at Pei Jinyue and saw that her face was flushed, her eyes a little unfocused, but the corners of her lips still held a faint smile.
“Pei Jinyue, you—” Ji Wanmian opened her mouth, wanting to ask what exactly she was trying to do.
But Pei Jinyue cut her off.
She gently placed her finger on Ji Wanmian’s lips, making a hush gesture.
“Don’t speak. Let me talk.”
So Ji Wanmian said nothing, listening to Pei Jinyue speak words that cut into her like knives—
“Do you really like me that much? You know, I’m not just good to you.”
“Ji Wanmian, I’ll fall for many people, but I’ll never fall for you. You’re not my type.”
When she finished, Pei Jinyue withdrew her hand, laughed clearly a few times, then staggered around Ji Wanmian, saying:
“The reason I helped you back then was because you looked like Niannian. The reason I stayed with you was because you reminded me of her. If one day I stop loving Niannian, I definitely won’t like someone like you either.”
Ji Wanmian bit her lower lip. From the moment Pei Jinyue started talking, she hadn’t said a single word.
At first, she had wanted to respond, but eventually—it just didn’t seem to matter anymore.
She didn’t reply to anything Pei Jinyue said. Instead, she lifted her head and looked toward the sky.
“The snow stopped.”
“Yeah, the snow finally stopped.” Pei Jinyue didn’t lift her head, only stared at the ground.
“It wasn’t much snow anyway. It’ll melt by tomorrow.”
Ji Wanmian lowered her head again, took one last good look at Pei Jinyue, and without saying goodbye, turned and walked away.
Pei Jinyue quickly followed.
Maybe it was the alcohol, but her steps were erratic—she kept tripping over herself and fell to the ground with a loud thud.
On the tenth fall, Ji Wanmian finally turned around.
“Why are you following me?” she asked.
Pei Jinyue was rubbing her knee, looking very well-behaved.
“Going home.”
Ji Wanmian tilted her head, not looking directly at her.
“Go back to the Pei family. Isn’t someone picking you up? Following me won’t get you home.”
“But I want to go to your home,” Pei Jinyue said honestly.
“To Ji Wanmian’s home.”
Ji Wanmian’s heart had already gone cold. She had meant to reject her outright. But seeing that expression on Pei Jinyue’s face, she chuckled and nodded.
“Alright, come with me then.”
Let’s end this together.
Just like today’s snowfall—
It only lasted one day, but that was enough.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Ji Wanmian kissed her.
She didn’t kiss Pei Jinyue on the lips—just rose up on tiptoe and lightly kissed her forehead.
That kiss was a thank-you—for Pei Jinyue’s presence in her life.
At her most helpless moment, someone had stepped forward to say a few kind words. That alone had meant a lot.
But after that… Ji Wanmian had done enough for her.
Even if she looked back on today in the future, she would no longer feel pain or regret.
As Ji Wanmian’s lips left her forehead, Pei Jinyue was still staring at her intently.
“Pei Jinyue.” Ji Wanmian’s voice was hoarse. She walked to her desk and picked up a letter.
“I told you before, this was a letter for you… no, it’s really a love letter, isn’t it?”
Pei Jinyue nodded.
Ji Wanmian smiled, then quickly tore the letter to pieces.
“All the letters and drawings—I should’ve thrown them away a long time ago.”
“But then I thought, tearing them up is better. If I’m going to say goodbye to everything, I might as well do it cleanly.”
Pei Jinyue was still smiling, unchanged, silent.
“And these rings and bracelets.” Ji Wanmian easily slipped them off her fingers and held them up, letting them glint in the light.
“I was going to toss them too, but then I figured—they’re worth money. I can sell them later and buy nicer gifts for my future girlfriend.”
“After all, my future girlfriend will probably be from a regular background like me. I don’t ask for much—just a simple, warm life.”
“I almost forgot—these were all gifts from Miss Pei, weren’t they? But if you want to take them back, go ahead. Save them for the next girl who looks like Niannian.”
Pei Jinyue paused, her smile stiffening a little. But then she nodded.
“They’re yours.”
“Thanks. Speaking of money…” Ji Wanmian opened a drawer, pulled out a thick wad of cash, and placed it into Pei Jinyue’s hands, looking serious and firm.
“Let me say it again—this will be the last time—I was never with you for your money.”
This time, Pei Jinyue didn’t even try to refuse. She took the money and slipped it into her bag.
That was good.
No need to say more.
Just as Ji Wanmian turned to look for something else to settle and move on from, Pei Jinyue suddenly spoke.
“Then what were you after?”
Ji Wanmian didn’t quite understand.
“What do you mean?”
Pei Jinyue’s eyes were burning, following her no matter where she moved.
She slowly walked toward Ji Wanmian, smiling.
“I said, if it wasn’t for money—what were you after?”
