Chapter 32: Can’t You Stay…? 1.1
The next day, Ji Wanmian was woken by a nightmare.
She dreamt she was being chased, leapt from a tall building, and after falling to the ground, landed in a safe, flower-filled place. Smelling the flowers, she looked down at the various blossoms, only to realize, upon closer inspection, that every flower had Pei Jinyue’s face on it.
Just then, the person chasing her also burst in. It was the first time she clearly saw the face of her pursuer in a dream—it was still Pei Jinyue.
Terrified, Ji Wanmian immediately opened her eyes and sprang up from bed. It took her a long time sitting up to slowly detach from the dream.
It had been a long time since she had a nightmare, but she never expected this one to be ten or even a hundred times more terrifying than all the previous ones.
Ji Wanmian slowly pulled back the covers. Her legs trembled slightly as she got out of bed. She originally wanted to play on her phone to relax, but as soon as she opened a video app, all she saw were videos of partners buying flowers or advertisements for flower shops.
Ji Wanmian: “…” Why hadn’t she seen so many flowers before!
In a fit of pique, she threw her phone aside and went to the bathroom to wash up.
Perhaps she was hungry from being angry. She initially thought of ordering takeout as usual, but she really didn’t want to wait, so she decided to go out to eat today and also shake off the lingering fright from her nightmare.
Ji Wanmian hesitated for a moment when she passed her cosmetics, wondering if she should put on a full face of makeup just to eat out.
But she quickly dismissed the idea. Just washing her face and wearing a hat was good enough. Why waste time fussing? She wouldn’t run into anyone she knew anyway.
Then she ran into Pei Jinyue downstairs in her apartment complex.
To use another term, she was the source of her nightmare.
Coincidentally, Pei Jinyue was holding a large bouquet of roses.
They were vibrant and dazzling; some passersby even turned their heads to admire the brilliant flowers.
But Ji Wanmian didn’t want to look at the flowers at all, and she was even more afraid of seeing the person holding them. She abruptly turned around. Rather than being entangled by that shameless person, she would just inconvenience herself and take the other exit.
“Xiaomian—”
Oh no.
Ji Wanmian paused, unsure whether to keep running forward. If she kept running and the person behind her caught up, wouldn’t it be exactly like the scene in her dream?
Immediately, she took a deep breath, turned around, and walked towards Pei Jinyue.
Pei Jinyue blinked in surprise, actively stepping closer and handing over the flowers: “Xiaomian, these are the flowers I bought for you…”
But Ji Wanmian didn’t stop for a single step.
She didn’t even spare Pei Jinyue a glance.
Pei Jinyue lowered her head, looking at the bouquet in her arms, and asked, “Xiaomian, don’t you like these flowers?”
Ji Wanmian didn’t turn back. She didn’t want to say a single word, but for the sake of her future peace, she still left a sentence: “The way you are now, I won’t be touched; I’ll only feel like you’re affecting my life.”
After saying that, she elegantly walked away from Pei Jinyue, her steps quick. Firstly, she didn’t want to see that person; secondly, she was truly too hungry.
After that, before going downstairs, Ji Wanmian would always stand by her balcony and look towards the complex entrance. She wasn’t sure if Pei Jinyue had given up or was brewing some new mischief, but it was true that for a long time, that person hadn’t appeared in front of her again.
Ji Wanmian breathed a sigh of relief. Whatever the reason, as long as Pei Jinyue didn’t appear, it was a good thing.
Although Miss Pei’s appearance had indeed disrupted her original peaceful life, causing her emotions to fluctuate greatly—which was quite suitable for her creative work—for her, a calm and stable life was the most comfortable.
She had always been someone who feared unexpected events, and living a disciplined life gave her peace of mind.
However, in life, sometimes what you fear most is what happens.
Ji Wanmian hit a creative block at work and was feeling down. She impulsively decided to visit a park, hoping to breathe some fresh air and gain some inspiration.
But before she even reached the park, Ji Wanmian was already wailing inwardly—
What kind of fate is this!
Just at that moment, it started to rain again.
And just at that moment, she had left in a hurry and forgotten her umbrella.
And just at that moment, the down jacket she was wearing today didn’t have a hood.
Ji Wanmian had no choice but to find the nearest eaves for shelter. But winter rain wasn’t like summer rain, which comes and goes quickly; it was mostly long and lingering. In her current mood, it was pure torment.
She lowered her head, wanting to play on her phone to pass the time, but as soon as she opened it, the phone displayed a low battery warning.
In her boredom, Ji Wanmian, for the first time, began to appreciate the rain in front of her.
Rain and wind mixed together, bringing the scent of soil, a damp and cold atmosphere. Pedestrians hurried home under their umbrellas. What wasn’t a particularly pleasant weather brought Ji Wanmian a lot of inspiration.
Perhaps even going to the park wouldn’t have given her the same state of mind as now.
Unpredictable changes in life are unavoidable.
Instead of sorrow and shouting, it’s better to simply enjoy the present scenery.
Only…
Her spirit was enjoying itself, but her body was about to give out.
So cold.
Ji Wanmian shivered, wrapping her arms around herself to keep warm.
She looked up at the sky. Although she didn’t have the ability to predict when the rain would stop by looking at the weather, she knew very well that this rain wouldn’t stop anytime soon.
If that was the case, then she would brave the rain.
It was just running forward in the rain; a youth should not lack courage.
But before she had taken two steps, Ji Wanmian obediently returned under the eaves.
She wasn’t as young anymore, didn’t have the same enthusiasm as in those years.
She opened her phone contacts, wanting to find someone to rescue her, but after thinking about it, she worried about disturbing their work. In the end, she didn’t make a single call.
Never mind.
Ji Wanmian was a bit tired of standing, so she simply squatted on the ground, quietly waiting for the rain to stop.
“Xiaomian.”
Suddenly, no more raindrops fell in front of her.
Ji Wanmian looked up, saw the person approaching with an umbrella, and after two seconds of stunned silence, she smiled faintly and said, “Little Wen Su, luckily you came.”
The umbrella covered Ji Wanmian, and no more rain could drift down.
Wen Su used her free hand to help Ji Wanmian up and explained, “I was thinking of coming to find you. I happened to pass by and saw a familiar figure. When I got closer, it really was you.”
Ji Wanmian scratched her head with an embarrassed smile: “I wanted to go out for a stroll, but I forgot my umbrella and then it started raining, so I had to hide here for now.”
Wen Su asked with concern, “Didn’t you get wet? Don’t catch a cold.”
Ji Wanmian pursed her lips, then decided to say, “No, no.”
Although she did get wet, it wouldn’t be good to admit that she had just run out in a fit of adolescent impulsiveness and gotten soaked.
As they walked, Ji Wanmian felt that the umbrella was covering more area on her side. She looked up at Wen Su’s umbrella; it seemed a bit small, just right for one person, but if it had to cover two…
She turned her head and saw Wen Su’s wet shoulder.
Ah.
Ji Wanmian quietly felt a pang of guilt. It seemed Wen Su didn’t want her to get wet, so she silently endured it herself.
Wen Su followed the gaze of the person beside her, likely guessing what Ji Wanmian was thinking, and then said with a smile, “It’s fine, only my clothes got wet. It’s not a big problem.”
Although her tone was light, she still regretted why she had taken this umbrella. It wasn’t because she got wet, but because she was afraid of making Ji Wanmian overthink, which would make Xiaomian unable to return home happily and with a clear conscience.
“Why don’t we tilt it a bit more towards you,” Ji Wanmian still felt very guilty. After saying that, she reached out, wanting to take hold of the umbrella handle.
“No need…” Wen Su shook her head, but before she could finish speaking, she was interrupted by the person in front of her.
“Xiaomian.”
Another call.
Ji Wanmian froze, her outstretched hand suspended in mid-air, finally falling back down.
She and Wen Su simultaneously turned their heads, looking at the person walking towards them.
Pei Jinyue seemed to ignore the other person under the umbrella, staring intently at Ji Wanmian. She still held a bouquet of baby’s breath, her voice filled with apology: “Xiaomian, I’m sorry, I’m late.”
Ji Wanmian let out an “Ah.”
Pei Jinyue had already prepared her reply to Ji Wanmian’s words. No matter what Xiaomian said, she would try her best to make her feel her sincerity.
But Ji Wanmian merely tilted her head towards Wen Su and asked, “Little Wen Su, did you hear any strange noises?”
Wen Su first froze, then, understanding Ji Wanmian’s implicit meaning, couldn’t help but chuckle a few times, saying, “I did, but I couldn’t hear it clearly.”
Ji Wanmian smiled, tugged on Wen Su’s sleeve, and said, “I can’t hear it clearly either, let’s go. It’s quite cold outside.”
“Xiaomian—”
Pei Jinyue called out again, her voice drawn out. Seeing that Ji Wanmian still wouldn’t turn back, she lowered her head and whispered, “I can do anything for you, please don’t leave…”
Ji Wanmian actually stopped.
Pei Jinyue was overjoyed, thinking that Xiaomian must have been touched and had a change of heart.
“You can do anything?” Ji Wanmian asked indifferently.
Pei Jinyue quickly replied, “Mhm, I can…”
“Then give me your umbrella.” Ji Wanmian’s gaze fell on Pei Jinyue’s umbrella. Although it wasn’t very large, if she and Wen Su each had one, they wouldn’t have to worry about Wen Su getting wet in the rain anymore.
Pei Jinyue stood frozen in place, not expecting Ji Wanmian to make such a request. She didn’t recover for a moment.
“Forget it, you’re a rich young lady, how could you give me your umbrella to use?” Ji Wanmian spread her hands and snorted, “You say you’re willing to do anything, but you’re hesitating this long over giving an umbrella. Pei Jinyue, you should keep those words to fool yourself.”
Wen Su glanced at Pei Jinyue’s expression, then turned to Ji Wanmian with a smile and said, “Xiaomian, let’s go back. There’s no need to say so much to her.”
“Here.” Just as Pei Jinyue handed the umbrella to Ji Wanmian, rain drifted onto her, and many small droplets landed on the top of her head.
Ji Wanmian didn’t stand on ceremony, immediately took it, and handed it to Wen Su: “You’ll have to make do with this umbrella. Don’t get caught in the rain. I can use yours.”
Wen Su took it with a smile, shaking her head, “No inconvenience.”
Ji Wanmian originally intended to turn and leave, but out of conscience, she still looked back at Pei Jinyue.
Oh, she only just noticed that Miss was actually wearing a full face of makeup.
The only times she had come to her rental apartment before, wearing makeup, was right after coming back from a bar.
And this outfit, it was the one she had praised Pei Jinyue for looking good in.
She never expected Pei Jinyue to have so many hidden intentions. If she hadn’t taken her umbrella today, Ji Wanmian probably wouldn’t have noticed at all.
See, there were raindrops on Miss’s eyelashes, and stray hairs clung to the sides of her cheeks. Occasionally, the cold wind made her shoulders tremble uncontrollably, yet she still stood there, gazing at her expectantly, probably waiting for her to feel sorry for her.
But the only thing Ji Wanmian felt sorry for was the flowers in Pei Jinyue’s arms. The poor flowers hadn’t found a good owner and were forced to get rained on in this cold weather.
But Ji Wanmian didn’t linger too long. After quickly withdrawing her gaze, she hastened to catch up with Wen Su and walked towards home.
To be honest, from the scene just now, it really looked like the legendary “Shura field.”
But would Wen Su have those kinds of feelings for her?
Ji Wanmian looked at Wen Su’s back, a sense of confusion rising in her heart.
In the three years since she returned, Wen Su was still the same as before, often coming to her house, bringing gifts, or sometimes just simply coming to chat with Ji Wanmian.
She remembered once asking Wen Su, “You used to come to my house wanting to know when I’d be back. Now you come to my house, is there something else?”
Wen Su smiled and replied ambiguously, “Perhaps it’s habit. Whenever I have free time, I want to come here. Auntie is also very warm, and you don’t chase me out.”
