Chapter 42: Just Let Xiaomian Be Happy Scolding Me
Pei Jinyue returned home and didn’t turn on the lights immediately. Instead, she sat in the darkness, thankfully with the moonlight from the sky, which kept her from seeing nothing at all.
She was hungry, her hand hurt, and her legs ached.
But she had no mood to care.
She simply slumped on the sofa, quietly tilting her head back, her mind filled with the words Ji Wanmian had spoken. Every word was like a sharp thorn piercing her heart. What hurt the most was that everything Xiaomian said was true.
Even if Xiaomian called her hypocritical, arrogant, and shameless, she could accept it, it didn’t matter, as long as it made Xiaomian happy to scold her. But what she feared most was Xiaomian recounting the past moments when she liked her, especially recalling the joy and happiness of those times. That was what caused her the most pain and suffering.
She imagined that on New Year’s Eve many years ago, Xiaomian also returned home heartbroken, stung by her beloved.
Pei Jinyue truly wanted to slap herself.
But suddenly, her phone received a message. The bright screen flickered in her eyes.
The slap could wait.
Pei Jinyue opened the short video app. When she saw a private message, her heart raced, and her fingertips trembled so much she could barely type.
It was from Xiaomian.
Laiwanmian: “You be happy too~”
Actually, she hadn’t paid much attention when she first saw that user’s comment a long time ago. But when her gaze fell on the username, her eyes widened instantly, confirming that the person on the other end was Ji Wanmian, whom she had thought about for so many years.
After all, Xiaomian’s nicknames on all social media platforms were the same. In Xiaomian’s words, naming things was too difficult, and she was simply too lazy to change it.
Pei Jinyue looked at the profile picture of “Laiwanmian,” as if she saw the enthusiastic Xiaomian on the other side. In that instant, mixed emotions churned in her heart.
Xiaomian, who would even send blessings to strangers, had spoken such harsh words to her. It must have been because what she did years ago had hurt Xiaomian’s heart too deeply.
She sighed, turned on the light, and then stared at the message Ji Wanmian sent, almost staring the cold text into blooming flowers.
She typed a long string of characters, then shook her head in dissatisfaction, deleting and editing. In the end, she only sent a coolly detached “Thank you.”
She had actually thought about how she was just a drawing vlogger right now, and as a stranger Xiaomian didn’t know, she could talk to Xiaomian more. But then she had a change of heart. Xiaomian got angry even about the mascot photo, so it was better not to contact her for now. She would wait until she had formulated her words well, then explain everything clearly.
She didn’t text, but Xiaomian did.
Laiwanmian: “You’re so amazing, every art style looks so good, and the fireworks you drew today were truly beautiful.”
Pei Jinyue gritted her teeth, placed her phone on the table, and tucked her hands into her sleeves, reminding herself over and over: No matter what, I can’t reply. My hands can’t even touch the phone.
Who knew that Xiaomian seemed to have suddenly opened a floodgate, and even though the other side didn’t reply at all, she still didn’t give up.
Laiwanmian: “I also draw, so I can tell, your drawings are really”
Xiaomian’s message cut off there, with no further text.
Are they very beautiful? Or very familiar? Or even very similar to Pei Jinyue’s drawings? After all, they went to the same university, so they must have seen each other’s artwork, even if she deliberately changed her style. But what if Xiaomian really figured it out…?
Pei Jinyue was so nervous her heart almost jumped out of her mouth. She swallowed it back down and remained calm for the moment, not proactively asking.
Laiwanmian: “Sorry, I sent it before I finished typing, and then my internet lagged. What I actually wanted to say was, your drawings are really to my taste.”
Pei Jinyue finally relaxed completely, seeing the cute emoji sent from the other side. She was terrified that Ji Wanmian would discover her identity before she decided to confess, which would surely make Xiaomian angry again.
A long time passed, and Xiaomian didn’t send any more private messages.
Pei Jinyue glanced at her phone. Xiaomian was probably already asleep. She didn’t wait any longer, turned off her phone, took a shower, and went to bed.
She actually fell asleep.
Ji Wanmian did not.
Ji Wanmian, who had planned to go to bed early, lay in bed for most of the day. Although she had been so tired just a moment ago, she now felt no sleepiness at all. After getting up and playing on her phone for a while, she was bored and watched all the videos of her favorite drawing vlogger again. Perhaps it was a second watch, as she noticed many details and felt that the art style seemed familiar, as if she had seen it somewhere before. But then she thought, this was the scariest thing an artist could hear, and it was just her brain imagining things. If she were to rashly go and say it and cause the vlogger to stop updating, she would regret it for a long time.
Perhaps out of guilt, Ji Wanmian went to the vlogger’s page and sent a blessing message.
The other side didn’t reply, even though they had replied instantly last time.
Are they busy? But it says “online”…
Perhaps the deep night always made one sentimental. Ji Wanmian truly regretted the thought that had flashed through her mind and sent many more messages to the other side, not forgetting to complete her thoughts even when her internet lagged.
In the end, there was still no response.
Ji Wanmian didn’t want to say anything more. Just as sleepiness arrived, she yawned, but just as she was so tired she could barely keep her eyes open, someone called her.
The sudden phone ringing startled away much of her sleepiness.
She had finally managed to feel sleepy, but now she was wide awake again.
Ji Wanmian bristled, determined to see who was calling her in the middle of the night.
It was Wen Su.
So, Ji Wanmian’s bristling subsided, and she wasn’t as angry. She obediently picked up the phone, and just as she was about to answer, the other side hung up. Immediately after, she received a long string of messages from Wen Su.
Wen Su: “Xiaomian, I’m sorry, I was too anxious just now and called directly, but I was afraid of disturbing your sleep, so I had to hang up. When I heard someone bullied you at the class reunion, I couldn’t help but immediately ask you, are you okay now? Are you hurt? I’m sorry I’m not by your side, I can only message you to show my concern.”
Ji Wanmian could tell that Wen Su was afraid of sending too many messages, causing the phone to constantly pop up notifications, so she compiled all her words into one message.
Such a thoughtful little Wen Su. Even though they had been separated for a while now, she hadn’t changed at all.
So Ji Wanmian didn’t want Wen Su to worry too much and quickly replied: “Little Wen Su, I’m fine. Although that person said a few things to me, I didn’t take it to heart.”
Wen Su: “That’s good, I can breathe a sigh of relief then.”
Ji Wanmian thought it was a rare chance to chat with Wen Su, so she asked two more questions: “Let’s not talk about that for now. How have you been recently? Is life in another city treating you well?”
After waiting for a while, Wen Su replied: “Not bad.”
Ji Wanmian didn’t think much of it. Sleepiness surged again, so she replied: “Alright, I’m a bit sleepy, so I’m going to bed now.”
Wen Su: “Okay.”
Ji Wanmian turned off the light, tossed her phone aside, and fell into a deep sleep.
In fact, that deep night, only two people truly couldn’t sleep.
One was Wen Su, accompanied by the sounds of crying and things being thrown. She still hadn’t put down her phone, her gaze fixed on the “not bad” she had typed, and then she smiled softly, her smile containing the bitter taste of helplessness.
As for the other, it was Zhang Ban, who had been scolded by his father the entire way home. He, who had been swaggering outside every day, was now sobbing with tears and snot flowing, crying loudly, “I didn’t know that person was truly someone not to be messed with—”
