Chapter 1: That Was Close. I Almost Didn’t Make it Out Today.
Under the dim, hazy lights, an alpha slowly stepped into the bar. One hand gripped the brim of her baseball cap, tugging it low, so low that only a pair of clear, round peach-blossom eyes could be faintly seen beneath it.
The eyes lifted briefly, scanning the surroundings, then quickly darted away like a guilty thief. She strode over and sat at the bar.
Only then did Zhou Tian slowly remove her mask.
The bartender, who had just turned around, froze for a second. There was no shortage of beautiful men and women in a place like this, but the person in front of him still stood out strikingly.
A delicate oval-shaped face, a cute upturned nose, lips curved in a sweet smile. Long lashes fluttered with nervous energy, and a faintly awkward smile glimmered in her expressive, youthful eyes—bright and unguarded.
A rare sight in a place like this.
Zhou Tian casually pointed at the menu the bartender handed her and ordered a drink, though her gaze lingered on the page.
“Miss, is there anything else you need?” the bartender asked softly, unconsciously giving off a friendly vibe.
“Ah… No, no… thank you,” Zhou Tian quickly shook her head.
She rarely came to places like this. But today had been too suffocating. She’d forked out the cash to drown her sorrows at the most famous bar in the city.
Her thoughts had barely begun to drift when her phone, sitting on the bar, suddenly buzzed violently. She paused at the name on the screen, brows knitting together, but still answered the call.
In the very back of the bar, in the exclusive VVVIP booth, a relaxed group of people had long since noticed Zhou Tian’s awkward presence.
“Hey, what do you think she is—an alpha or an omega?” one omega teased, raising a brow at her friends.
“Doesn’t matter if she’s alpha or omega—she clearly looks like a newbie. All jittery like that, probably doesn’t come to places like this,” an alpha chimed in.
“Why can’t she be a beta?” Wen Mingzhi’s thin lips parted slightly, lifting into a faint, playful smile as white smoke coiled around her.
“…That’s true too. Wanna bet? I’m betting she’s an omega—just look at that petite frame, no way she’s an alpha.” The omega instantly pulled out two cigarettes, placing them on the table like poker chips, and raised her eyebrows at the group.
“I’ll bet she’s an alpha! What about you, Mingzhi?” someone else jumped in, tossing out three cigarettes confidently.
Wen Mingzhi slowly lifted her gaze, letting her eyes fall on Zhou Tian for a moment. With that same faint smile, she silently pulled out five cigarettes and placed them on the table.
“Alpha.”
Her long, pale fingers tapped the table twice, lazily yet with a hint of seductive mischief.
“Mingzhi, didn’t you just say beta?”
Wen Mingzhi’s lips curled into a smile, but she said nothing. She kept smoking, her gaze occasionally drifting toward the girl at the bar.
And Zhou Tian—the subject of their little debate—was currently on the phone.
“Sis Xia, no way, I’m so irrelevant. Who would even recognize me?” Zhou Tian replied with a self-deprecating chuckle.
She quickly added, “I’m wearing a hat and a mask, Sis Xia. Don’t worry.”
As the call continued, Zhou Tian’s relaxed expression gradually tensed again.
“Uh… Sis Xia, how was the dinner meeting tonight?”
“…That’s good… thank you for everything, Sis Xia.”
“…”
After the call ended, the curve of Zhou Tian’s smile faded.
Tonight’s “dinner”—no, drinks—was dressed up as a business opportunity, an invitation for her to perform. But in reality, there wasn’t even a stage—just an excuse to pressure her into sleeping with someone. Who knew how the company even got involved with those people? Fortunately, Sis Xia had always treated her well and hated the dirty dealings of the entertainment industry. She’d helped cover for her and got her out of the situation.
That was close. She’d almost been trapped tonight.
With that thought, Zhou Tian lifted her drink and cursed under her breath, drinking gulp after gulp in frustration.
By the time she snapped out of it, half the light-blue cocktail in her glass was already gone. She realized she hadn’t really looked around the place yet.
This was, after all, the most famous bar in A City—and her first time here.
She turned around, her round peach-blossom eyes scanning the wild, pulsing crowd on the dance floor, the blinding lights flashing like strobe bombs—until her gaze locked, unmoving, onto the figure in the very back.
The woman was lounging elegantly in a booth, wearing a black slip dress. Her long jet-black hair cascaded freely down her back, making her pale skin look even whiter. She exuded a cool, seductive aura. One hand held a cigarette between slender, bony fingers; the other hand held a wine glass. Smoke swirled around her. Her eyes lifted slowly—cold, distant, and mesmerizing.
The moment their eyes met, the blaring music abruptly cut out with a “snap.”
All Zhou Tian could hear was the thunderous beating of her own heart—loud, fast, and unrelenting. Her bl00d surged wildly through her body, every cell buzzing.
She was completely mesmerized.
Even when those cool, aloof eyes locked with hers, she couldn’t look away. All she could do was awkwardly shift her gaze, flustered.
Zhou Tian lowered her head, her cheeks flaming red. Her long lashes trembled.
Only after a while did she dare to sneak another look at that woman—the gorgeous, entrancing Omega seated in the VIP booth.
A quick glance, then she dropped her gaze again. Her breathing grew uneven, her heart pounding louder and faster. Her mind was blank—she couldn’t even remember the woman’s face. Her eyes were drawn back to her, completely beyond her control.
This time, Zhou Tian finally got a clear look.
A sharp, elegant nose. Luscious red lips. Bold, striking features…
But what truly stole her breath were those phoenix eyes—cold and detached, yet laced with a lazy smile and an alluring depth.
Like a lake on a winter morning, white mist rising in the stillness—cold, ethereal, beautiful.
And this Omega… she was that very flower blooming on the lakeside, swaying in the cold breeze, serene and graceful. Hard to describe, but undeniably captivating—making one ache to know more.
Just as Zhou Tian was completely entranced, those phoenix eyes lifted, glancing her way.
Her heart seemed to stop for a second. She forgot how to breathe.
She quickly averted her eyes, then slowly looked up again, offering the woman a shy, sweet smile.
The thick white smoke drifted across, shrouding the goddess’s face. Zhou Tian snapped out of her daze, quickly lowering the hand she had half-raised to wave hello.
She bowed her head, ashamed and flustered, shoulders tense, hands clenched tightly on her lap.
I probably looked so stupid just now.
What would she think of me? How embarrassing…
“…”
“Huh? She’s really an alpha? Her figure totally had me fooled…” someone at the booth remarked, waving a hand.
“Guess I win! But yeah, it was kinda hard to tell. Most alphas are built big and tall, but she’s about the same height as Mingzhi…” the omega said, shaking her head in slight disappointment.
Another friend teased, “Hey… interesting. She keeps looking at Mingzhi~ Seems like our Mingzhi really attracts people~”
The short-haired alpha said, “Mingzhi’s got sharp eyes, as always. Should we call her over?” She arched an eyebrow at Wen Mingzhi, who was still smoking languidly.
Without waiting for an answer, she waved at Zhou Tian.
Still lost in her little daydream, Zhou Tian stole another glance in that direction—only to see someone waving at her. It was a woman sitting diagonally from the goddess… likely a friend?
Zhou Tian looked around in disbelief, double-checking. When she was sure they were really calling her, her feet moved before her brain caught up. She was already standing in front of the booth before she even realized it.
“H-hello…” Zhou Tian looked around nervously. There were six people in the booth, each stunning in their own way. But her eyes kept drifting to the goddess.
“Don’t be shy—have a seat,” the alpha who waved smiled. The group shifted to make room—right next to Wen Mingzhi.
A few of them exchanged knowing glances.
But Zhou Tian didn’t notice any of this. Her thoughts were entirely occupied with the goddess.
She couldn’t believe she was sitting next to her.
Head slightly bowed, she seemed to be staring at the table—but her fluttering lashes revealed her excitement.
It wasn’t long before her hands, resting on her knees, began to nervously twist and fidget.
She’s so pretty… so elegant…
She probably has a girlfriend, right? Or maybe even a bonded partner already…?
The neat short-haired omega spoke up, “Let’s do introductions. I’m Fei Xing’en, and this is Wen Mingzhi.”
“H-hi, nice to meet you all… I’m Zhou Tian…” Her voice faded as she looked down again. Her already pink cheeks flushed bright red.
Was it that obvious how much she liked the goddess?
Wen Mingzhi. Even her name was beautiful.
After quick introductions, Zhou Tian quietly sat through their conversation, overwhelmed by the sound of her own racing heartbeat.
And then, from the corner of her eye, she noticed a slender, pale hand moving into view. Long, elegant fingers held a cigarette. The ash drifted down, one bit landing right on her middle finger—like a pristine sheet of paper marred by a drop of ink. So out of place.
“Um… your finger…” Zhou Tian leaned slightly toward her, speaking softly. But the moment Wen Mingzhi turned to look, she quickly glanced away, pretending to look at the crystal ashtray.
“Hmm?” Her voice was soft, a little hoarse—seductive, like her entire presence.
“I-it’s just… your hand…” Zhou Tian stammered, caught off guard by her beauty. Her mind went blank again. Then, acting entirely on instinct, she reached out and brushed the ash away from those flawless fingers.
It wasn’t until her hand retracted that she realized what she’d done.
Her face flushed hot, the warmth spreading through her entire body.
Her hand tingled from the cool, silky contact. She instinctively licked her lips.
Then, near her ear, came a soft, almost whispered chuckle.
“…Thank you.”
