Chapter 11: Just Payment for That Night
When she said that, Bai Qianxue still had a warm, approachable smile on her face, without a single trace of guilt or hesitation.
Meanwhile, the smile on Zhou Tian’s face froze.
As Bai Qianxue walked away, Xia Ruo was still a bit confused. Noticing Zhou Tian’s expression, she asked, “What’s wrong, Tian Tian? What did she just whisper to you?”
“It’s nothing, Sister Xia,” Zhou Tian shook her head, her eyes filled with thought.
So that’s what it was. It turns out the so-called newly crowned pop queen Bai Qianxue came over just to do something so childish—bullying a rookie like her.
Zhou Tian’s lips curled slightly, a faint trace of helplessness and frustration in her expression.
So… that’s why she messed everything up?
But this was such a rare and precious chance for her to be on a show.
“I heard Teacher Bai Qianxue came to apologize to you just now, Zhou Tian?” Lü Ningyue leaned over and whispered.
“I’ve worked with her on other shows before. Teacher Bai Qianxue is actually quite nice. I don’t know why she acted that way today…” Lü Ningyue looked genuinely puzzled.
“…Mhm,” Zhou Tian nodded slightly.
“Well, I guess that means the show’s going to have some drama now… maybe the ratings will shoot up? You might even get a bit famous,” Lü Ningyue grinned optimistically.
“Maybe… but…” Zhou Tian had never experienced something like this before and had no idea how things would turn out.
“Even if it makes for good drama, it probably won’t be a good thing. You might get bashed,” Wen Qingying suddenly chimed in, having walked over without them noticing.
“…”
The group fell silent.
“It’s okay. At least I got to be seen by everyone,” Zhou Tian said, half-joking.
“They’re not going to cut your part out entirely, right?” Lü Ningyue suddenly looked nervous.
“Ah? Then what if they cut my part too?” Wen Qingying started to worry.
Zhou Tian just shrugged. No one really knew for sure.
The rest of the show’s recording went smoothly, with no more drama. It was almost as if Zhou Tian’s segment had been some kind of glitch.
After the recording, everyone went their separate ways. Lü Ningyue had to rush to her regular variety show, and Wen Qingying needed to get back for a livestream.
Of the “Trio Group,” only Zhou Tian was left, but thankfully Xia Ruo stayed with her, keeping her earlier promise to treat her to dinner.
“It’s alright, it’s all done now… don’t worry,” Xia Ruo comforted her.
“Isn’t it nice? We haven’t heard from Li Aoyun recently, so things are more relaxed.”
“The show team said they’ll handle things properly, Tian Tian.”
Zhou Tian: “Mm, it’s okay, Sister Xia. At least it was a chance. As long as people heard my song, that’s enough.”
“Besides, didn’t you say it was President Wen who arranged for us to join the show? Don’t worry too much. For Wen Mingzhi’s sake, they’ll definitely handle it well.” Xia Ruo said that, but she wasn’t too confident inside.
Why would someone like Wen Mingzhi go out of her way to help them?
Zhou Tian thought for a moment: “It’s okay, Sister Xia. Could you check if there are any other shows we can join? Any performance gigs lately?” she asked. Having something is better than nothing. Even if they’re small shows and the pay is low, it’s good experience.
“Okay, okay! I’ll start reaching out once I get back. I’ll find you something good!” Xia Ruo immediately brightened up when she saw that Zhou Tian wasn’t discouraged.
After dinner, Zhou Tian went home. She had originally planned to call her goddess to thank her today, but now…
What face did she have left to call her?
Zhou Tian collapsed onto her bed, shame and self-doubt twining like vines around her heart, entangled with her feelings of admiration and longing.
She buried her face deep into the blanket and didn’t move for a long time.
Suddenly, she sat up straight like a startled fish. Sitting at the edge of the bed, her head drooped low and her hair fell, covering her pale face.
Her joyful anticipation… probably meant nothing to Wen Mingzhi.
Of course, it’s her after all—Wen Mingzhi.
Zhou Tian silently repeated the word “little sister” in her mind—that’s what her goddess had called her… The slight curve of her lips was full of bitterness.
Too bad she wasn’t her goddess’s little sister.
After letting out who knows how many sighs, Zhou Tian fished out the business card from under her pillow, grabbed her phone, entered the number, and dialed.
“Beep… beep…” The call waiting tone rang out. Each second that passed felt like eternal torment. Zhou Tian stared at the screen, biting her nail without realizing it.
She gulped and then, unable to take it anymore, tossed the phone onto the bed, afraid that if she kept holding it, she’d panic and hang up again.
She missed her goddess so much. She just wanted to hear her voice, to talk to her a little…
“Hello?” The call was finally answered.
Zhou Tian jolted upright as if electrocuted, grabbed her phone, and sat perfectly straight on her bed.
“Hello, is this President Wen Mingzhi?” she asked cautiously, testing the waters.
Just one soft “Mm,” that familiar voice with a slight upward lilt—it was her goddess’s voice, and Zhou Tian’s heart almost leapt out of her chest.
“Yes, what is it?” Hearing her voice, Wen Mingzhi already knew who it was. She rarely gave out her business card—only to important partners. Normally, people contacted her secretary or Assistant Chen. Only her friends had her personal number.
“This is Zhou Tian, President Wen… the one from the bar that night…” Afraid Wen Mingzhi didn’t remember, Zhou Tian explained quickly.
“Mm, I know who you are.”
A soft, airy laugh came through the phone, enough to make someone’s heart tremble.
Zhou Tian’s face flushed bright red.
“I… I went to record the Voice of Joy program today. I didn’t perform very well… but thank you for helping me, and also, thank you for saving me at the restaurant that day.” Zhou Tian’s mind was blank, and she just kept expressing her thanks.
“You’re welcome.”
“Mm… um…” Zhou Tian stumbled, unsure what else to say. She blurted out, “President Wen, thank you, but… why did you help me?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Zhou Tian slapped her forehead in regret.
“You’re welcome. It was just payment for that night,” Wen Mingzhi replied casually, her voice indifferent and blunt.
Like a sharp blade, her words stabbed straight into Zhou Tian’s heart—clean and merciless.
Zhou Tian froze. It was as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her. Her racing bl00d turned cold, and even her brain seemed to freeze.
Payment for that night?
That night… was just payment?
Payment?!
Wasn’t that night a mutual decision between the two of them? How could it be called payment?
“Hmm?”
