Chapter 16: You Don’t Have to Do These Things.
After that, as if realizing something, Zhou Tian glanced around nervously. She was bluffing, but a little guilty about it.
Outside the gate, Ms. Bai Qianxue stared daggers at her, then took a deep breath. “Are you living here?” she asked with a forced smile.
“No… but I’m staying here for a few days,” Zhou Tian replied honestly.
“Tch… I thought you actually lived here.” Bai Qianxue rolled her eyes.
“So why are you here, Miss Bai?” Zhou Tian asked curiously. She even doubled back and returned to the gate with her coffee, continuing the conversation.
“I live here, in the house next door!” Bai Qianxue said, arms crossed, holding a shopping bag in one hand.
“Oh? Then you can go home now,” Zhou Tian said with a smile as she looked at her through the gate.
“I just stopped by to pay Ms. Wen a visit. Let me in.”
“I’m not stopping you,” Zhou Tian replied breezily, taking a sip of coffee, looking quite smug.
At some point, Assistant Chen had walked over.
She came directly up to them. “Miss Zhou, President Wen says if she’s your friend, then she may come in.”
Zhou Tian jumped, nearly spilling her coffee.
She frantically shook her head. “No, she’s not my friend.”
“I am Zhou Tian’s friend! We even appeared on a show together! I’m really her friend!” Bai Qianxue repeated loudly, as if afraid Assistant Chen wouldn’t believe her.
Zhou Tian kept shaking her head, firmly denying it. “No, we’re not friends.”
One was a top star in the music world, the other an unknown newcomer. How could they be friends?
“Alright then,” said Assistant Chen, no longer insisting. “Since you’re not friends, Miss Zhou, please return inside.”
She turned to Bai Qianxue politely. “Miss, perhaps another time.”
Zhou Tian followed her back in, while Bai Qianxue left unwillingly.
Bai Qianxue had heard that Wen Mingzhi owned a house here and sometimes stayed over, so she bought a villa nearby. Occasionally, she’d notice activity from the neighboring house—cars coming and going—and whenever Wen Mingzhi returned, she’d deliberately create chances to “bump into her” or drop by to visit.
She had indeed succeeded in visiting once, but that was the only time. Most of her attempts had been politely declined.
Still, she continued trying—attending events she knew Wen Mingzhi would go to, trying to manufacture moments to see her.
As far as she knew, Wen Mingzhi led a very private life and hadn’t been seen with any alphas in years. And now suddenly, there was Zhou Tian.
Zhou Tian, who had nothing on her. The only advantage she had was being young!
After returning home, Bai Qianxue angrily threw her shopping bag aside. Inside was the latest AMSS handbag she had just managed to get.
She immediately texted her manager, Sister Jin, to dig into Zhou Tian’s background and find her contact info.
Back inside the villa, Zhou Tian followed behind Assistant Chen, licking her lips nervously—Wen Mingzhi definitely noticed her bluffing just now…
“Miss Zhou, please try to keep quiet and avoid making a scene. President Wen is working.”
Zhou Tian nodded like a little quail, shoulders hunched.
“If you need anything, just let me know,” Assistant Chen added.
“Okay… um, do you have a guitar? Just a regular one is fine.”
“Alright, I’ll try to get one for you.” Assistant Chen then headed to the study.
“Thanks…”
Zhou Tian went up to the third floor bedroom to grab her phone. If she were home, she’d be working on music, but there was no equipment here.
With nothing else to do, she opened the “Trio Chat” group. Lu Ningyue was sharing updates from the variety show she was filming.
Lu Ningyue: “How do I look in this photo? We had such a great time today!”
Wen Qingying: “So cute! A lot of my livestream viewers said your song was amazing!”
Zhou Tian clicked on the photo. It was a group pic with some A-list celebrities—even their mentor Liu Taoran was there.
Lu Ningyue: “Look! I got autographs from the mentors!”
Zhou Tian excitedly typed: “Wow!! That teacher went on the show too? Can you get an autograph for me!?”
—She added a cute cat sticker afterward.
Lu Ningyue: “Got you covered! She signed a bunch for me!”
Wen Qingying: “I got one too! So happy!!”
Lu Ningyue: “By the way, the PD said they need one more guest next episode. Wanna join? It’s super fun and relaxing!”
Wen Qingying: “Ahhh, too bad. My livestream schedule’s packed. I can’t. What about you, Zhou Tian?”
Zhou Tian: “A variety show?! I’ll ask my agent, but I’m in!!”
Lu Ningyue: “Great! I’ll tell the PD you’re interested and send you her contact info!”
Zhou Tian: “Perfect!!”
Zhou Tian couldn’t help but smile. Everything was starting to look up.
And best of all, she still got to stay with her goddess!
She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the greenery, lost in thought.
She glanced toward the neighboring villa and, sure enough, spotted Bai Qianxue pacing anxiously in the yard, talking on the phone. Clearly agitated.
Zhou Tian shrugged and, with nothing else to do, opened Weibo to search for updates on the variety show “Summer Life.”
It was a slow-paced lifestyle program featuring actors, singers, models, and hosts, documenting their time living together and completing various missions. The vibe was relaxed and warm.
All the guests were big names to Zhou Tian. But since it was a rare opportunity, she planned to make the most of it. She followed their Weibo accounts, looked through their posts, and tried to get a feel for their interests.
Her goal was simple: promote her music. She didn’t expect anything else.
Soon, Sister Xia confirmed that they’d connected with Summer Life’s PD.
The recording was scheduled for next Tuesday, so she had a few days to prepare.
She quickly sent Lu Ningyue a thank-you message.
Then, thinking of something, she searched for news about Bai Qianxue. Most of her posts were about music, but there were a few older ones showing her attending events with Wen Mingzhi, publicly praising her beauty and character.
They even had one collaboration. Bai Qianxue had lavishly praised her and even tagged her in the post. But the official PR only stated they had a “pleasant collaboration.”
It didn’t seem like they had any real connection… though, Zhou Tian thought, she could be using a private account.
After reading, she touched her stomach—getting hungry again—so she went downstairs.
She saw Auntie Li wiping down a five-foot-tall porcelain vase.
“Auntie Li, has President Wen come out yet?” Zhou Tian asked.
Auntie Li shook her head.
So Zhou Tian pulled her into the kitchen.
After cooking, Zhou Tian glanced at the clock. It was already 1:30. Wen Mingzhi must be hungry by now…
She hesitated at the study door, then summoned the courage to ask, “President Wen, Assistant Chen, would you like to have lunch?” Her hand hovered mid-air, palms sweaty, heart pounding.
“Yes,” came Assistant Chen’s immediate reply.
She’d been hungry for a while. When President Wen got serious about work, she ignored everything else—even eating—until her tasks were done.
Now someone was finally there to remind her to eat properly!
When Assistant Chen came out, she gave Zhou Tian a grateful smile.
“Lunch is ready, President Wen,” Zhou Tian said softly, her smile gentle and eyes curved.
Zhou Tian usually cooked simple meals for herself, so she was confident. She had even made two of the dishes today herself—hopefully Wen Mingzhi would like them.
Her wrist had been splattered with a bit of hot oil while cooking, but it was no big deal.
“Let’s eat.” The four of them sat around the table: Zhou Tian and Wen Mingzhi facing each other, with Auntie Li and Assistant Chen on either side.
“Do you know Bai Qianxue?” Wen Mingzhi suddenly asked.
“Yes,” Zhou Tian replied, then shook her head. “But we’re not close.”
“I see.” Wen Mingzhi responded coolly. They’d crossed paths occasionally, and as neighbors, she’d met her once for tea. Bai Qianxue had seemed friendly—just trying to say hi, nothing more. She’d never mentioned anything about wanting resources, which made her actions now feel puzzling.
“It’s fine. You can chat with her sometime if you’d like. She lives next door anyway,” Wen Mingzhi said mildly.
“…Alright,” Zhou Tian agreed after a pause.
Then Wen Mingzhi looked up. “Auntie Li, this dish is a bit sweet. Next time, please make it spicier.”
“Okay.”
“President Wen, that dish was made by me,” Zhou Tian said softly, licking her lips. “Sorry, I didn’t make it well.”
“You cooked it?” Wen Mingzhi raised an eyebrow, her tone cool and aloof. “You don’t have to do these things.”
