Chapter 19: Is President Wen Really That Stingy?
The two of them were arguing fiercely, face flushed red from the back-and-forth.
Just then, Manager Jin walked in carrying a plate of fruit. “Are you two fighting?” Her eyes narrowed, exuding a dangerous aura.
The room instantly fell silent.
“Zhou Tian, what are you doing? Even if you’re friends, you’re being far too disrespectful to your senior!” Bai Qianxue immediately spoke first, establishing her position to Manager Jin.
“I didn’t… It was you who…” Zhou Tian’s voice grew quieter.
“All right, both of you, go practice the song. One hour. No breaks.” Manager Jin said sternly, placing the fruit plate on the coffee table. “Let’s go with XXX Concerto.”
She sat down on the matte black leather sofa facing them and calmly began eating fruit.
“But Manager Jin, this has nothing to do with me…” Bai Qianxue tried to explain.
“One hour and twenty minutes.”
Zhou Tian swallowed hard. So this was what she meant by “scary.”
XXX Concerto was extremely fast-paced and hard to keep up with—it tested not only technique but physical endurance.
Zhou Tian played the guitar, while Bai Qianxue played the electric keyboard.
The two of them tried to keep up with the rhythm, but even after the first section, it was clear they were struggling.
“Again,” Manager Jin said coldly and mercilessly.
Zhou Tian swallowed and continued again.
Every time they made a mistake or fell behind, they had to start over, until they could play the entire piece cleanly from start to finish.
And the whole time, Manager Jin sat there, monitoring them like a hawk.
That one hour and twenty minutes felt like forever. By the time they finished, Zhou Tian’s fingers were trembling uncontrollably, and Bai Qianxue didn’t fare much better, her forehead beaded with sweat. They both collapsed weakly into their chairs like they had just run a marathon.
“That was very good. Come rest for a bit,” Manager Jin said with a gentle smile.
Zhou Tian looked over at Bai Qianxue—Is this the kind of intense training she does all the time?
Bai Qianxue stood up and walked straight to the sofa. Zhou Tian followed and quietly sat beside her, sipping tea and nibbling on fruit.
“Miss Zhou, I took a photo of you two earlier. Do you mind if I post it?” Manager Jin held up her phone and showed her the picture.
In the photo, the two of them were fully immersed in their instruments, completely absorbed, looking in sync and glowing with passion. The composition and lighting were excellent—it looked like a professional photo full of energy and life. Both women radiated a vivid, musical vibrance.
Without much thought, Zhou Tian nodded.
“You’re okay with me posting it as a ‘mentor and junior’ kind of thing?” Manager Jin asked as she went ahead and posted it from her own account, tagging them both.
“Three birds with one stone. There was some controversy after your Yue Sheng performance the other day. This will help Zhou Tian gain some attention, stop the blind hate on Qianxue, and also spark a fresh wave of discussion.” Manager Jin explained.
Zhou Tian nodded—after all, anything that helped her exposure was good. Bai Qianxue had a massive fan base, and riding that wave could only help. Manager Jin really was a top-tier agent.
Not long ago, many of Bai Qianxue’s fans had been online bashing her, claiming that Zhou Tian’s lack of skill had dragged their idol down and that she deserved the criticism. Hopefully this photo would change that.
“You didn’t check with your own agent before posting?” Bai Qianxue suddenly asked. “Wouldn’t this add to their workload?”
“No need… I don’t have many fans anyway, not much traffic. If anything, my agent will be thrilled I finally got some attention,” Zhou Tian replied with a bitter smile. Her profiles on Dazhan and other platforms had pitifully low follower counts—she didn’t even need a PR team.
Bai Qianxue nodded thoughtfully.
“Make the most of this freedom while you still can,” she said seriously. “You might not always be allowed to post whatever you want from your own account.”
Zhou Tian blinked in surprise and nodded. It was rare to see this serious side of Bai Qianxue—she finally looked like a true senior in the industry, not just an Omega acting out of jealousy.
The contrast was… kind of adorable.
Zhou Tian couldn’t help but chuckle a little. Who would’ve thought the two of them would be sitting here now, sipping tea and chatting like old friends?
“What are you laughing at? I’m serious. Look at me—my account’s practically run by Manager Jin now.” Bai Qianxue grumbled.
“Mm-hmm. I know.”
“All right, go back to what you were doing. No more fighting. Qianxue, stop bullying her.” Manager Jin sternly reminded them before leaving.
The two women looked at each other in silence.
“This is all your fault—I was supposed to be resting, and now I’m exhausted.” Bai Qianxue rubbed her wrist.
“Miss Bai, you were the one who started saying weird things,” Zhou Tian fired back without backing down.
“Okay, okay, enough.” Bai Qianxue stood and walked back to the keyboard. Her fingers hit the black and white keys, and a familiar melody filled the air.
It was the tune Zhou Tian had played yesterday, but Bai Qianxue had recreated it flawlessly—only better. Smoother, more elegant, and far more refined.
“Well?” Bai Qianxue tilted her chin proudly, looking to her.
“It’s beautiful.” Zhou Tian was stunned—the melody lingered in the music room, echoing in her mind.
“Right? Just a few small changes and the effect is totally different.” Bai Qianxue said seriously. Her smile was calm and graceful as she played, like she had become one with the music.
“You’re amazing, Miss Bai!” Zhou Tian didn’t hold back her admiration. She even pulled out her phone to record it.
Same melody, three keys higher—it became something else entirely, yet still beautiful.
Zhou Tian was in awe. She suddenly remembered the exaggerated headlines online: “A musical prodigy with divine pitch—gifted by the heavens, the new queen of the music scene…”
Turns out, none of it was exaggerated at all.
“What, speechless now?” Bai Qianxue grinned, practically glowing with pride. She might as well have had “I’m awesome” flashing on her forehead.
Zhou Tian nodded honestly. “It’s really good. Absolutely incredible.”
“See? Just giving you some inspiration.” She stood up and walked over, sitting beside Zhou Tian with her tea.
“Do you just let people listen to your original songs like this?” Bai Qianxue suddenly asked.
“What?” Zhou Tian, still holding her guitar, looked up in confusion.
“Original songs should be kept secret, you know. What if I stole it and claimed it as my own?” She said lightly, smiling faintly, though something complicated flickered in her eyes.
“Seriously?” Zhou Tian was taken aback. That thought hadn’t even crossed her mind.
“How do you know it wouldn’t happen?” Bai Qianxue laughed softly, a strange glint in her eyes.
Zhou Tian fell silent. It was true—they weren’t that close, and Bai Qianxue had a far bigger reputation and more power in the industry. If she did steal it, no one would believe Zhou Tian. But still…
“You’re too talented, Miss Bai. You wouldn’t need to steal a simple song like mine.” Zhou Tian looked at her seriously.
“Tch… I thought you’d say something dramatic.”
“Well, you’re right about that—if I wanted songs, there’d be dozens lining up at my door to offer them. I could pick and choose.” Bai Qianxue said, smug and unapologetic.
“Exactly.” Zhou Tian wasn’t offended at all. In fact, she was happy—she’d love for someone like Bai Qianxue to sing her song.
“Do you want this song, then?” Zhou Tian asked after a moment’s thought, looking at her seriously. “When I’m done writing it, I’ll give it to you—with the lyrics too.”
“…” Bai Qianxue froze, stunned. “You’re serious? You want me to sing it?”
“Yes.”
“You that desperate for money? Aren’t you with President Wen now? Is she really that stingy?” Bai Qianxue asked, shocked.
Zhou Tian frantically shook her head. “No, no, that’s not it… I just think it’d be great if you sang it…”
“You’re so young…” Bai Qianxue turned away and sipped her tea, her expression suddenly serious. “Don’t do that.”
Then she lifted her chin, crossing her arms again with a smug air. “Now, play it again. Let me see if you’ve made any progress.”
Zhou Tian picked up her guitar and ran through the piece again—this time clearer, smoother, more refined.
Bai Qianxue listened intently, occasionally offering critiques or suggestions.
Neither of them knew that the photo Manager Jin had posted was already causing a stir online.
The once-unknown Zhou Tian was starting to gain attention.
Halfway through the song, she got stuck again—no inspiration. Both of them were at a standstill.
It was already noon, and there was no sign of life from the house next door. It seemed President Wen really wasn’t coming back today.
“Zhou Tian, we’re friends, right?” Bai Qianxue suddenly asked.
Zhou Tian hesitated for a long moment, then nodded.
“Then can I come over to your place tonight?” Bai Qianxue leaned in with a grin.
“You should probably ask President Wen about that…” Zhou Tian still didn’t agree.
“Oh come on, it’s just dinner. She’s not even home, how am I supposed to ask? Do you think she’ll come back tonight?”
Zhou Tian shook her head, visibly dejected.
“Tsk tsk tsk, I thought President Wen liked you so much,” Bai Qianxue said with disdain.
“I mean—I just don’t know, okay?” Zhou Tian retorted, glaring at her.
“Isn’t that the same? You don’t even know her schedule. Not even whether she’s coming home today.”
Zhou Tian was so annoyed she nearly had a heart attack. “Then why are you not allowed into her house, huh!?”
“So what? I live next door, and I’ve attended tons of public events with her.” Bai Qianxue smiled proudly.
“Yeah? And she’s never once looked your way. What’s there to brag about? I’m living with her now! Under the same roof!!”
“So what? You don’t even have a proper title! For all you know, she’ll dump you tomorrow! And stop calling her ‘Mingzhi-jie’ in front of me!”
“So what? At least I’ve been with her!!!”
