Chapter 29: When did I ever say I didn’t love you?
“Ahhhh!!!”
The two of them hugged and cheered.
“My song finally went viral!” Zhou Tian jumped up, excitedly bouncing on the bed.
“Yes! You finally made it, Tiantian! I knew this day would come!” Xia Ruo beamed with tears brimming in her eyes.
“Thank you, Xia-jie!” Zhou Tian hugged her tightly, her tone serious and heartfelt. “Thank you!”
“…Alright, now there’s nothing to worry about. Tons of entertainment companies will want to sign us!”
“Yes!”
They cheered together, while the phone that had been tossed onto the bed kept vibrating and ringing nonstop.
“Wait… I think my phone’s ringing.” Xia Ruo quickly picked it up.
“Yes, yes, I’m Zhou Tian’s manager, that’s right… Mm-hmm, okay…” She had barely finished the call when the phone rang again.
It was practically exploding with calls.
Zhou Tian couldn’t help but smile.
Looks like there’s no need to worry now. Although, she hadn’t really been worried in the first place.
A while later, Xia Ruo finally had a moment to breathe.
“Tiantian, I think we should head back soon. Work is calling!” Xia Ruo pounced toward her, full of joy.
“Sure.” Zhou Tian readily agreed. They had been vacationing for over half a month. They had enjoyed themselves to the fullest—it was about time to get back to work.
Now that good opportunities and resources were on the table, there was no reason to delay.
“Great, then let’s pack up. We’ll leave tomorrow!” Xia Ruo quickly made the decision.
Zhou Tian nodded in agreement.
After finishing their meal, the two of them lay leisurely on the beach, soaking up the sun.
“That’s strange. Where’s Liang Xirui? Haven’t seen her today,” Xia Ruo said, a bit surprised.
“Yeah, where is she?” Zhou Tian looked around but didn’t spot that lively, energetic figure.
“Eh, probably stayed up late gaming and is still sleeping,” Xia Ruo said casually, sipping her coconut juice.
“Who said I was up late playing games?” Liang Xirui suddenly appeared, pouting in protest.
“We thought you weren’t around!” Zhou Tian was startled and quickly sat up from her beach chair.
“How could I not be? I saw you guys down here, so I came to join.” Liang Xirui sat beside Zhou Tian, elegantly holding a glass of pink cocktail.
“Miss Liang, have you listened to Tiantian’s new song ‘Sunshine Island’? I’m telling you, it’s blowing up!” Xia Ruo turned toward her excitedly and shared the good news.
“I’ve heard it! It’s viral!? That’s amazing! Tiantian, you’re incredible!!” Liang Xirui set down her cocktail and clapped her hands.
“Thanks.” Zhou Tian shyly looked away, a little embarrassed.
“Sigh… what a pity. I can’t stay here much longer. I won’t be able to hang out with you anymore, Tiantian…” Liang Xirui downed a large gulp of her cocktail and sighed.
“Hm? What happened?” Zhou Tian looked at her curiously.
“Some old incident got dragged up. My brother got angry and ordered me to come home. Don’t let me find out who leaked it to him!” Liang Xirui said angrily.
“You’re going back? What a coincidence, we’re about to head back to A City too,” Xia Ruo said, a bit surprised.
“When are you leaving? Maybe we can travel together?” Zhou Tian asked.
“In the next couple of days. If your timing lines up, we can go together!” Liang Xirui immediately lit up, her eyes sparkling.
“That’s perfect. I thought I’d be all alone heading back. Let’s go back to A City together—and hang out more when we’re back!” she said happily.
“Mhm.” Zhou Tian nodded casually.
“No way, Miss Liang. Once we’re back, we’ve got serious work to do!” Xia Ruo immediately shut down that idea.
“So stingy! What work? Let me see—maybe we’ll end up working together anyway!” Liang Xirui wasn’t giving up.
“…”
The next day, everyone boarded the Liang family’s private jet and returned to A City.
Liang Xirui clung to Zhou Tian’s side, reluctant to part. Xia Ruo stood between them to separate the two. Zhou Tian, caught in the middle like a doll being tugged back and forth, could only smile helplessly.
“Alright, alright, Tiantian, see you!” Liang Xirui waved and hopped into her car.
“Okay, our ride is here—let’s go, Tiantian,” Xia Ruo and Zhou Tian got into their car, heading to Xia Ruo’s home.
After so many days, Zhou Tian was finally back in A City. Everything felt both unfamiliar and deeply familiar—etched into her bones.
She stared out the window. Cold steel skyscrapers, endless streams of cars and people, and giant HD advertisements… As the screens rotated, Zhou Tian caught sight of Lü Ningyue’s face on one of them.
But before she could dwell on it, the car turned onto a familiar street where the crowd thinned out.
“Wait a second… This isn’t the right road, is it? Xia-jie, Xia-jie…” Zhou Tian tapped Xia Ruo’s arm anxiously.
“You’re right. This isn’t the way to my place!” Xia Ruo quickly realized. “Driver! We’re headed to Sunshine Happy Community, Building 28—did you take the wrong road?”
“No, ladies. I’m under orders from President Wen to take you to Cuiyu Villa,” the driver replied.
“What?!” Xia Ruo exclaimed.
“Wen Mingzhi? We’re not going! Driver, pull over and let us out!” Zhou Tian’s brows immediately furrowed.
The driver ignored them and continued down the road toward Cuiyu Villa.
Xia Ruo turned to Zhou Tian in surprise. “Tiantian, why is President Wen… Are you still in touch with her?” she asked, clearly confused.
“No… no contact at all. We already said everything we had to say…” Zhou Tian’s small face scrunched in frustration. The thought of seeing that person again filled her with irritation.
“What is Wen Mingzhi even doing? You two already went your separate ways—what’s she trying to pull?!” Xia Ruo gripped Zhou Tian’s arm, confused and concerned.
Zhou Tian shook her head, a trace of impatience flashing in her eyes. If someone was out of your life, they should stay that way. Why dig up the past and force a connection?
“…”
At Cuiyu Villa, Wen Mingzhi sat gracefully on the couch, a cigarette between her fingers. A delicate cup of green tea sat on the coffee table in front of her.
She looked down, the white smoke curling up around her. Her gaze was fixed on the tea, unmoving, lost in thought.
“President Wen, Miss Zhou Tian is on her way,” Assistant Chen reported, just as she had done every day lately, keeping track of Zhou Tian’s movements.
“And Liang Xirui?” Wen Mingzhi looked toward the door. Her sharp phoenix eyes exuded a cold authority.
“Miss Liang has returned to the Liang family estate.”
Wen Mingzhi took another drag of her cigarette and slowly exhaled a ribbon of smoke.
She hoped Liang Xirui would behave, especially after the subtle warning she delivered via Liang Liangjun.
Wen Mingzhi sipped the green tea.
These days, she kept telling herself not to think about Zhou Tian—not to let her work be distracted. But she couldn’t help remembering their time together.
Especially that final line from Zhou Tian, so calm and gentle: “I love you, Wen Mingzhi.” That sentence kept echoing in her mind.
Did she love her?
She left so decisively. Turned around and laughed so happily with another Omega…
A whirl of conflicting emotions swirled in her chest—anger, doubt, obsession, confusion—all tangled like fog, smothering her.
She always prided herself on making clean, strategic decisions. Never messy, never emotional.
This was just a kept alpha. If she was gone, she was gone. She could easily replace her.
So why was her heart still in turmoil…?
Wen Mingzhi took another drag.
Assistant Chen stole a few glances at her.
The smoke veiled Wen Mingzhi’s face, making her seem even colder. She used to smile faintly sometimes—soft, relaxed. But lately, she was tightly wound, silent, chain-smoking, exuding an oppressive, frigid aura.
Especially after hearing Zhou Tian’s latest updates—her expression would always darken, and she’d light cigarette after cigarette.
They used to get along so well… What happened?
Just then, the sound of a car horn pierced the silence. A white sedan pulled into the courtyard.
Wen Mingzhi’s eyes lifted sharply toward the door.
Inside the car, Zhou Tian sat with a frown, unmoving.
“Tiantian, what do we do now?” Xia Ruo sighed. “Seriously, what is Wen trying to pull?”
The driver urged, “We’ve arrived, ladies. Time to get out.”
“Is President Wen inside?” Xia Ruo asked.
“Yes.”
Zhou Tian’s frown deepened. “Go tell your President Wen that we have nothing to do with each other anymore. There’s no need to meet.”
“Exactly! Just tell her and let us go,” Xia Ruo echoed.
Inside, Wen Mingzhi noticed the lack of movement outside. Her guest hadn’t appeared. She took another large sip of tea to suppress her growing agitation.
“Xiao Chen?” she said, glancing at her assistant.
“Yes, President Wen…” Assistant Chen immediately stood. “I’ll go check.”
She stepped outside. The sky, once sunny, was now heavy with gray clouds pressing low—ominous and suffocating.
She sighed softly, walked to the car, and opened the door.
“Miss Zhou Tian, Miss Xia. Long time no see.”
“Long time indeed—but seeing each other is hardly necessary, don’t you think?” Xia Ruo smiled coldly.
“Well, since you’re here, why not come in and talk?” Assistant Chen said, bowing slightly.
The car fell silent.
Both Assistant Chen and Xia Ruo turned to look at Zhou Tian.
After a long moment, Zhou Tian’s tense brows relaxed slightly. “Fine. Since we’re already here, let’s hear her out.” She stepped out of the car and headed toward the villa.
Assistant Chen and Xia Ruo followed close behind.
And thus… the confrontation begins.
The heavy rain outside kept pouring down like a curtain drawn from the heavens. Even with the car windows shut, the sound of rain pelting the roof remained relentless.
The car drove steadily through the streets of A City.
Summer had turned into early autumn. The trees by the roadside shook their branches in the wind and rain, scattering droplets like fragments of a dream. In the dim interior of the car, neither of the two women spoke.
After a while, the car came to a stop beneath a residential building.
“Alright, we’re here.” The driver glanced back and gently reminded them.
Summer snapped out of her daze and turned to look at Zhou Tian. “Let’s go. We’re home.”
“Okay.” Zhou Tian responded, her voice soft.
The two of them got out of the car. Summer held an umbrella and shielded Zhou Tian under it, the two of them quickly hurrying toward the building entrance through the rain.
Zhou Tian stepped through the familiar hallway, taking in the once-cozy surroundings. The lights in the hallway flickered slightly due to the humidity, casting shadows on the walls.
Back inside Summer’s apartment, the first thing Zhou Tian did was sit silently on the edge of the couch.
“Want something hot to drink?” Summer asked as she walked toward the kitchen.
“Sure. Anything is fine.” Zhou Tian leaned back, the exhaustion finally crashing down on her like the weight of the sky. Her voice sounded distant.
Summer quickly returned with a mug of warm milk tea. “Here, have this.”
“Thanks.”
Zhou Tian took a sip, but her eyes kept drifting toward the window, watching the rainwater trickle down the glass. The droplets clung to the glass and merged into streams, just like her thoughts — unclear, overlapping, and hard to separate.
Summer sat beside her, holding her own cup and hesitated for a few seconds before saying, “I really didn’t expect her to say that…”
Zhou Tian didn’t reply. She lowered her head, fingers tightening slightly around the mug.
“Did you… ever expect that she might actually love you?”
The question hit like a dart, quick and silent.
Zhou Tian let out a dry laugh, barely audible. “Maybe I hoped. But it doesn’t matter anymore.”
Summer looked at her and wanted to say something but ended up only nodding gently. “Yeah, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
They sat quietly for a long while.
Eventually, Zhou Tian put the cup down and stood up. “I’m going to unpack.”
“Alright, your room’s clean. Everything’s still where you left it.”
“Thanks, Summer.”
Watching her walk away with her usual quiet and graceful steps, Summer felt a strange ache in her chest. Zhou Tian had always been soft-spoken, rarely expressing her feelings, but the cracks were starting to show.
As the door to the guest room clicked shut, Summer stood up and began checking her phone for missed calls. Work was about to pick up again. Zhou Tian’s new song was trending wildly. There were interviews, live performances, and endorsements waiting. And she would make sure Zhou Tian soared higher than ever before.
As for the person from the past?
She would be left behind in the storm.
