Chapter 33: But right now, I only want her.” / “A Dating Show?
The celebrities present even quieted their breathing. Lu Ningyue’s arrival had barely given them a moment to relax, and before they could catch their breath, the tension returned—thick and suffocating.
“Alright! I don’t need—” Zhou Tian suddenly stood up. “Xirui, I’m leaving.”
She walked straight toward the exit without looking back.
“Tian Tian? Tian Tian?!…” Liang Xirui shot Wen Mingzhi a vicious glare and immediately ran after Zhou Tian.
Wen Mingzhi stood frozen, her expression taut. Her fierce phoenix eyes were bloodshot, lips pressed into a tight frown. She looked up in disbelief at Zhou Tian’s retreating figure—so cold and decisive.
She gave her no chance at all.
Her hand lost all strength, falling onto the chair like a severed kite. She gripped the back of the chair tightly, her knuckles white with tension, while her tailored suit jacket fell to the ground in disarray and embarrassment.
No one dared to make a sound. They all lowered their heads, not daring to meet her eyes.
After a moment, Wen Mingzhi slowly took a step and began to leave.
Lu Ningyue, waiting quietly at her side, picked up the coat from the floor and followed closely behind.
A faint smile curved Lu Ningyue’s lips—this was good. If Zhou Tian rejected Wen Mingzhi and made things difficult for her, it was her chance to step in and make a move.
“…”
“Tian Tian, I’m sorry. I got too emotional and said the wrong things just now… I didn’t mean to make things hard for you. I won’t do it again. It’s all Wen Mingzhi’s fault. Who knows what got into that old woman, showing up at a place like this… I’m sorry, Tian Tian, please don’t be mad,” Liang Xirui said, coaxing her as she clung close.
“Mhm… I’m not angry,” Zhou Tian replied softly, but her expression remained tense and serious—clearly in a bad mood.
“It’s not your fault… I’m not mad, Xirui.” Zhou Tian forced a smile, trying to lift the corners of her lips.
“Okay… Then from now on, let’s just avoid any events where Wen Mingzhi might be. And that Lu Ningyue too,” Liang Xirui muttered, frowning. Her bright face twisted with annoyance—she and Zhou Tian had been having a great time today before all this.
“Mhm.” Zhou Tian nodded again, but her face still lacked emotion.
“So, shall we go back now? Or…” Liang Xirui asked.
“Let’s go home.” The two of them stood by the car. The night breeze was still a bit chilly, but Zhou Tian just wanted to stand there, letting the wind clear her head.
But soon, two familiar figures approached from the shadows.
“Zhou Tian,” Wen Mingzhi strode forward and grabbed Zhou Tian’s wrist.
“President Wen, you really are like a ghost that won’t go away. Why are you following us?” Liang Xirui frowned and stepped protectively to Zhou Tian’s side, glaring at Wen Mingzhi’s hand.
“Let go!” Zhou Tian shook her off.
Wen Mingzhi shot Liang Xirui a sharp glare. After a brief hesitation, she released Zhou Tian’s hand.
“Let’s talk,” she said in a low voice, almost pleading. Her long lashes drooped, hiding a storm of emotion.
“President Wen, Tian Tian has nothing to do with you anymore. There’s nothing to talk about, so stop bothering her,” Liang Xirui said bluntly, stepping forward to fully shield Zhou Tian.
Then she turned to Zhou Tian, “Tian Tian, let’s go, okay?”
The night wind chilled unpredictably, sweeping in with sudden gusts like icy waves. The atmosphere was like a tightly drawn bow, ready to snap.
Everyone turned to look at Zhou Tian, who stood with her head lowered.
Lu Ningyue, standing by Wen Mingzhi, looked calm on the outside but was seething with jealousy inside. She hated Zhou Tian’s luck—being adored by two such outstanding Omegas. And yet she still hoped Zhou Tian would reject Wen Mingzhi.
Wen Mingzhi swallowed. Even now, Zhou Tian was avoiding her, refusing to meet her eyes…
Her hands, hanging by her sides, clenched into fists.
Zhou Tian’s delicate face turned away stubbornly, lips pursed. The peach blossom eyes that once always smiled now held only coldness and annoyance.
Wen Mingzhi’s heart sank.
Beside Zhou Tian, Liang Xirui stood shoulder to shoulder with her, gazing at her tenderly.
In that moment, Wen Mingzhi felt like the unnecessary one… Zhou Tian now had plenty of Omegas by her side—it seemed there was no longer any space for her.
Yet she was still trapped in their beautiful past, circling in place, slamming into walls. She looked like a fool who couldn’t let go.
She curled her lips into a bitter smile.
Had Zhou Tian really grown so tired of her?
Another gust of wind blew by, lifting the ends of Zhou Tian’s slightly curled hair.
After a moment, Zhou Tian slowly lifted her gaze to the poised Wen Mingzhi in front of her.
Wen Mingzhi had her head slightly lowered, her fierce phoenix eyes half-shut, voice humble and despondent, her posture thin and frail.
The woman who was once so high and mighty was now bowed, pitiful, and almost laughable.
Zhou Tian licked her lips. “Alright.”
The two of them got into Wen Mingzhi’s black Maybach.
“President Wen, if you’ve got something to say, just say it,” Zhou Tian broke the silence.
“There’s nothing between me and Lu Ningyue except business. No personal relationship at all,” Wen Mingzhi said, suppressing the darkness in her heart, trying to sound calm.
“Mhm. And?” Zhou Tian stared directly at her, unconcerned.
“It’s true. Didn’t Lu Ningyue explain that to you?” Wen Mingzhi insisted.
Under the car’s interior lights, Zhou Tian could see her clearly.
Her eyes were slightly red. The sharp lines of her phoenix eyes had softened into a fragile unease, dark circles shadowed beneath her lashes, adding to her exhaustion.
Her lashes trembled slightly, as if searching for the right words.
“Mhm, so what?” Zhou Tian responded coldly. Her peach blossom eyes were calm and emotionless—completely indifferent.
Wen Mingzhi looked up. The way Zhou Tian stared at her so calmly, so indifferently—it was like nothing she said could affect her. To Zhou Tian, she was nothing more than an irrelevant person.
That thought made Wen Mingzhi’s heart ache like it was being squeezed—stabbed by a thousand needles, building in waves until she couldn’t breathe.
“So…” Wen Mingzhi lowered her gaze and whispered, “So… can you come back?”
She hung her head, long black hair messily framing her face.
From Zhou Tian’s angle, her eyelashes quivered, her eyes reddened.
The pride and aloofness of a high-ranking figure were now broken, leaving only vulnerability and desperation. Only her cold demeanor remained intact.
“No,” Zhou Tian said firmly.
She looked away out the window—outside, Lu Ningyue and Liang Xirui seemed to be talking.
“Miss Liang,” Lu Ningyue greeted politely.
“Ha! Don’t call my name. Stay away from me,” Liang Xirui snapped, stepping aside as if avoiding bad luck.
“…”
Lu Ningyue’s smile froze, her expression faltering.
“Aren’t you busy clinging to Wen Mingzhi? Doesn’t seem to be working out, huh? Useless,” Liang Xirui scoffed, glancing at the two figures inside the car, irritation rising again.
“Damn it, how long are they going to talk?!” she muttered, kicking at a stone on the ground.
“…”
Lu Ningyue’s eyes were bloodshot. She bit her lip, her chest heaving. She turned around silently, cursing inside.
“…”
Wen Mingzhi lowered her eyes, hiding her sorrow and disappointment.
“I showed up with Lu Ningyue because I wanted you to see me—hoping you’d come talk to me,” she admitted, laying her feelings bare.
“President Wen, we have nothing to do with each other anymore. You don’t need to do this,” Zhou Tian frowned, turning away.
“Why? Why must you be like this?” Wen Mingzhi gritted her teeth, glaring at her.
“President Wen, isn’t it you who insisted on doing this?” Zhou Tian swallowed hard. “Yes, you’re powerful, high-ranking—so you think you can control everything? Manipulate people’s hearts?”
Her cold gaze pierced like venom. “I don’t care what’s going on with you and Lu Ningyue. Stop with these cheap tricks. I really don’t care!” she snapped, then immediately opened the car door and got out.
Wen Mingzhi was left sitting in the backseat—stunned, devastated.
She slowly bent over, taking deep breaths, clutching her knees, dizzy and overwhelmed.
Emotions devoured her, drowning all sense of reason.
“…’
“Tian Tian, you done talking?” Liang Xirui rushed to her side.
“Mhm. Let’s go,” Zhou Tian forced a smile, but her lips wouldn’t move, as if glued in place.
“Alright, let’s get out of this cold, miserable place.”
As they left, Lu Ningyue considered going back inside but was stopped by Assistant Chen.
“Miss Lu Ningyue, please take the white car home,” she said, gesturing to the vehicle.
“But…” Lu Ningyue hesitated, glancing at the dark silhouette in the Maybach. Eventually, she obeyed and left.
Assistant Chen remained until she heard Wen Mingzhi whisper, “Return to Qinli Manor.”
Only then did she get into the passenger seat. Through the rearview mirror, she saw Wen Mingzhi’s red-rimmed eyes, slightly glistening with tears.
Looks like things didn’t go well with Miss Zhou Tian, she sighed silently.
“…”
On the other side, Liang Xirui tried to cheer Zhou Tian up with funny stories. Eventually, her mood eased.
“Tian Tian, still feeling down? Want to grab a drink?” she offered.
“No, I’d better go home and rest. I’ve got work tomorrow,” Zhou Tian declined.
“Alright… that’s a shame,” Liang Xirui pouted. “It’s okay though. Anytime you want to drink—or not drink, just want someone to hang out with—call me! I’ll be there!”
“Thanks,” Zhou Tian gave a faint smile.
“What are you thanking me for? We’re friends!” Liang Xirui grinned. “Anything you need, just come to me!”
Soon, they reached her place. Zhou Tian said goodbye and went inside.
As soon as she opened the door, Xia Ruo called out, “Tian Tian? You’re back early?”
The brand’s gala was supposed to run until 10:30, with travel time pushing it to around midnight. But it was only 10.
“Mhm. Ran into Wen Mingzhi and Lu Ningyue, so I came back early,” Zhou Tian said, dropping her bag on the couch.
Seeing her fatigue and gloom, Xia Ruo held back her questions.
Zhou Tian slowly slid off the couch, collapsing onto the beige rug. Hugging her knees, she curled into a ball.
“Sister Xia… she said she only showed up with Lu Ningyue so I’d go find her.”
“She said there’s nothing personal between her and Lu Ningyue.”
“She even asked if I would go back to her…”
“…”
“It’s fine, ignore her,” Xia Ruo exhaled heavily and sat beside her.
“And Lu Ningyue said… she never saw me as a friend. She only approached me because of Wen Mingzhi…” Zhou Tian finally choked up.
“Fvck… that’s so messed up,” Xia Ruo cursed.
“Sister Xia, I’m so tired… We’ve already made things clear. Why does she still come after me…” Zhou Tian’s tears began to fall.
Xia Ruo wrapped her arms around her tightly.
Over the past few days, Wen Mingzhi had been offering good projects—either directly or indirectly—but Xia Ruo ignored them all and made sure to avoid any events involving her or Lu Ningyue. Yet somehow, Wen Mingzhi still got through.
She sighed deeply.
After Zhou Tian had calmed down, Xia Ruo asked, “Want to take a few days off?”
“No need,” Zhou Tian said, wiping her tears. The tissue quickly soaked up her smudged makeup.
“Alright then,” Xia Ruo nodded. “By the way, are you really going to pair up with Wen Qingying on a show? That variety show…”
“Mhm,” Zhou Tian replied, heading to the bathroom to remove her makeup. She didn’t even hear the rest of the question and agreed without hesitation.
“…”
While Zhou Tian kept busy with work and appearances…
Back at Qinli Manor, Wen Mingzhi spent her days smoking and drinking, trying to numb her pain—spiraling into a mess.
Assistant Chen dared not say a word. Ever since that fallout with Zhou Tian, her boss had been like this—no socializing, no events. Qinli Manor had even been closed off to visitors.
The estate felt empty, save for the occasional presence of staff and Assistant Chen.
Wen Mingzhi sat in the garden surrounded by blooming flowers. The roses were especially radiant.
She stared blankly.
She remembered how Zhou Tian had once smiled and said, “President Wen, these flowers are so beautiful—especially this yellow rose.”
Wen Mingzhi licked her lips, turning her gaze to the green river, but the heavy emotions in her eyes refused to fade.
“Mingzhi, what have you been doing all day?” a familiar voice called.
It was Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu.
Wen Mingzhi frowned and tapped her cigarette. “Didn’t I tell you not to come?”
“You say that every time,” Xu Baiqiu chuckled, sitting beside her.
“Exactly! And you’re not doing anything anyway,” Fei Xing’en added, pouring herself some tea.
“Ew, it’s cold. Tastes awful,” she grimaced, putting it down.
She noticed two wine bottles on the table—one empty, the other half full.
“Tsk tsk… Drinking this much in broad daylight?” Fei Xing’en scolded.
“So that story about the brand gala was true after all,” Xu Baiqiu said quietly.
“Damn it, I wasn’t there! Why didn’t anyone invite me to witness the drama?” Fei Xing’en grumbled.
Wen Mingzhi kept her gaze on the river—its waves rising and falling, just like her stormy heart.
“I didn’t expect that little devil from the Liang family to be so bold,” Xu Baiqiu teased.
“Yeah, she’s one of the few who dares stand up to Wen Mingzhi,” Fei Xing’en agreed.
As the two gossiped, Wen Mingzhi remained silent.
When she heard the name “Liang Xirui,” she cast them a cold glance, then went back into her thoughts.
“Looks like Zhou Tian really doesn’t love you anymore?” Fei Xing’en asked.
“Maybe. She used to be head over heels, but now she’s cut her off completely. That’s a big shift,” Xu Baiqiu said thoughtfully, watching Wen Mingzhi quietly.
“Then it’s over. Xirui’s always around her now. They might actually be together. And there’s another Omega who’s close to Zhou Tian—there’ve been a ton of videos of them lately.”
“Wen Qingying,” Wen Mingzhi said coldly, her phoenix eyes narrowing, emotions swirling darkly within.
“Yeah, Zhou Tian’s pretty popular with Omegas,” Fei Xing’en nodded. “But I mean, she is great.”
Wen Mingzhi shot her a glare. “Finish your tea and get out.”
Fei Xing’en grinned. “Aw, come on~”
Xu Baiqiu chuckled quietly. Who would’ve thought they’d see the day when Wen Mingzhi was heartbroken?
“I’m telling you, if you keep this up, you’re done for,” Fei Xing’en scolded, snatching her wineglass. “Liang’s rich and aggressive. Qingying’s her old friend. If you don’t get your act together, Zhou Tian will be taken for real!”
“Let her go, then. Mingzhi can find any alpha she wants,” Xu Baiqiu muttered.
“Mingzhi, what do you say?”
Wen Mingzhi paused, eyes gloomy.
The garden fell quiet again. Only the sound of birds and flowing river broke the stillness.
A breeze carried the scent of flowers.
Her frown deepened.
She used to think so too—she could have anyone. But…
It seemed she had fallen too deep, and now couldn’t let go.
“Yeah. But…” Wen Mingzhi looked at a blooming yellow rose, her eyes tinged red, filled with longing.
“But right now, I only want her.” She exhaled smoke. The rising haze veiled her moment of vulnerability, and then—just like that—she was back to her usual aloof self.
“Then go win her back,” Fei Xing’en said, munching on cake.
Xu Baiqiu just smiled. Logically, she didn’t agree with Wen Mingzhi’s mess.
“Oh right—what’s the deal with Lu Ningyue? Are you two…?”
“She still has her uses,” Wen Mingzhi said coolly.
“No wonder Zhou Tian won’t come back,” Fei Xing’en muttered under her breath.
Wen Mingzhi shot her a sharp look. “Everything you’ve suggested has been useless.”
“Ahem… That’s because you…” Fei Xing’en trailed off awkwardly, sipping tea and snacking.
“…”
These days, Zhou Tian was constantly busy. She was starting to wish for a break.
The weather was bright and breezy—perfect. Yet she still had to wake up before dawn for makeup and filming.
As the makeup artist worked on her, Assistant Xiao Liu handed her the show’s script.
There were some game segments listed, so the script was to help her prepare and understand the rules.
Zhou Tian glanced at it and immediately frowned. “Xiao Liu, are you sure you brought me the right one?”
“Of course! This is the show with you and Wen Qingying.”
“A dating show?” Zhou Tian asked in disbelief.
“Yep, a dating show!” Xiao Liu nodded confidently.
Zhou Tian’s face scrunched in disbelief. No one had told her it was that kind of show!
