Chapter 44: What If I Don’t Want This Child?
Wen Mingzhi furrowed her brows, a flicker of conflict flashing in her eyes.
“Here’s what we’ll do,” Dr. Guan said gently. “President Wen, take some time to think about it. For now, I’ll prescribe you some medication to help stabilize the pregnancy.”
“Oh, and also, the antidote you took early in the pregnancy might have some side effects,” she added. “And considering your previous health condition, these could potentially affect the baby.”
Wen Mingzhi nodded dazedly. She didn’t really absorb the rest of what the doctor was saying. Her mind was overwhelmed with one thought—she was pregnant.
She had never considered the idea of “children” before. Even when her friends argued about it a few days ago, she hadn’t taken it seriously. Now it felt too sudden, too real, too much.
“What about heat cycles?” she asked, frowning. “Will being marked during heat affect the baby?” She suddenly remembered all the nights she’d spent in bed with Zhou Tian during her rut.
“It shouldn’t be a problem,” Dr. Guan replied calmly. “Just don’t overdo it.”
“…Alright.”
Wen Mingzhi didn’t even remember how she left the hospital, how she returned to the top-floor office of Qisheng Group’s headquarters.
Now she sat numbly on the office couch, her mind completely blank, expression dazed.
She was actually pregnant.
The timing couldn’t be worse—and she had never planned for this.
The suppressed frustration in her heart seemed to dissipate slightly, replaced by a deeper confusion and uncertainty about the new life forming inside her.
Should she keep the baby? Should she really have a child with Zhou Tian?
Questions overwhelmed her thoughts, drowning out everything else.
She reached for the cup of coffee her secretary had just brought over, but Assistant Chen gave a subtle cough.
“President Wen, you really need to cut back on coffee now,” she reminded her softly.
Wen Mingzhi had brought back an entire bag of prenatal vitamins, pamphlets, and pregnancy instructions from Dr. Guan.
Wen furrowed her brow and silently put the coffee down. Her usually cold and sharp features were now shadowed with heavy contemplation.
She never imagined things would unfold like this.
Ever since Zhou Tian left her side, it felt like everything was slipping beyond her control. The harder she tried to hold on, the more things slipped through her fingers. And Zhou Tian—Zhou Tian was a complete wildcard, unpredictable and impossible to manage.
Wen Mingzhi sighed deeply, head bowed in thought.
“President Wen, would you like to eat something? You barely touched your breakfast,” Assistant Chen asked gently.
Wen hadn’t had a proper breakfast for days, not since Zhou Tian had been around.
“I’m not hungry,” she replied with a tight frown.
She tried to focus on reviewing emails and signing contracts on her tablet, but the text blurred in her eyes. Her mind kept drifting to Zhou Tian—and the baby inside her.
Frustrated, she threw the tablet aside and sighed, rubbing her temples.
She opened WeChat and sent Zhou Tian a friend request.
They still hadn’t added each other. Lately, all their contact had been through phone calls. But her WeChat account was still blocked.
Wen’s brow tightened, and she tossed her phone aside, agitation etched all over her face.
When Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu walked into the office, this was the scene that greeted them: Wen Mingzhi looking tense and troubled.
“What’s wrong, Mingzhi?” Fei Xing’en asked, arms crossed, a hint of teasing glimmering in her eyes.
Wen didn’t even lift her head.
“Mingzhi, did something happen?” Xu Baiqiu asked coolly.
“Xiao Chen, what’s up with your President Wen today?” Fei Xing’en leaned toward the assistant, playful and curious like a child with a new toy.
Assistant Chen swallowed nervously and glanced at Wen. She shook her head vigorously—this wasn’t something she could spill.
“Come on,” Fei Xing’en pouted and dropped onto the sofa next to Xu Baiqiu, staring at Wen Mingzhi.
“Mingzhi, seriously, what’s the big deal? We’ve been friends since we were kids,” she said, exasperated.
Finally, Wen looked up, casting them a cold glance. Her sharp phoenix eyes were clouded with conflict and gloom.
“Don’t tell me Zhou Tian doesn’t want to see you anymore?” Fei Xing’en guessed.
“Something happened at Qisheng?” Xu Baiqiu asked.
“No…” Wen began to reach for her coffee, then stopped herself and pulled her hand back.
Assistant Chen quickly removed the coffee and replaced it with a glass of milk.
“What’s going on?” Xu Baiqiu raised a brow. “Giving up coffee lately?” she teased.
Wen frowned. “You two are banned from my office from now on,” she finally muttered.
She turned to Assistant Chen. “You hear that? Don’t let them in again.”
Assistant Chen nodded slowly.
“Geez, so petty,” Fei Xing’en huffed.
“Something serious must have happened. Is the engagement with the Hai family in S City off?” Xu Baiqiu guessed again.
“It’s just an engagement. Hardly the end of the world. Maybe it’s a failed project?” Fei Xing’en added.
Their endless speculation only added to Wen’s frustration. She sighed deeply and gave them a helpless look.
“Can’t you wish me something good for once?” she muttered.
“Well, we would if you told us what’s going on,” Fei Xing’en grumbled.
Wen raked her fingers through her bangs and finally picked up the milk, downing a large gulp, hoping to suppress the suffocating anxiety in her chest.
Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu exchanged confused glances. Usually, Wen would talk to them if something was wrong. Why the sudden silence?
When she still didn’t speak, Fei Xing’en cornered Assistant Chen, grilling her about Wen’s recent activities.
“Mingzhi, just tell us,” Xu Baiqiu said gently. “We might be able to help.”
After a long pause, Wen finally spoke.
“I’m pregnant.”
The bombshell dropped like a missile, stunning them into silence.
“What!?” they both shouted in unison.
Fei Xing’en shot to her feet. Xu Baiqiu’s hand trembled, sloshing coffee over the edge of her glass.
The moment Wen said it, she regretted it. Her sharp eyes narrowed in warning.
“If either of you dares to tell anyone, you’re dead.”
Her voice was icy, like a poisoned blade pressing against their throats. One wrong move, and she’d strike.
“N-no, of course not. We wouldn’t tell a soul!” Fei Xing’en surrendered immediately, nodding furiously.
“Wait… really, Mingzhi?” Xu Baiqiu asked in disbelief.
“Yeah, are you sure? This isn’t a joke?” Fei Xing’en echoed.
“It’s real,” Wen replied, calmly taking a sip of spring water.
“It’s Zhou Tian’s baby?” Fei Xing’en asked quickly.
Wen gave her a helpless glance and sighed.
“So… what now?” Xu Baiqiu asked thoughtfully.
Silence fell over the room, so heavy it amplified the sound of their breathing.
“Well… it’s your baby, Mingzhi. If you have it, you’ll raise it. That’s all there is to it, right?” Fei Xing’en offered, trying to lighten the mood.
“True,” Xu Baiqiu said quietly, “but what about Zhou Tian? And would the baby be a typical A-level alpha or omega?”
“Oh, come on! Why worry about that now?” Fei Xing’en frowned. “As long as it’s Mingzhi’s child, that’s all that matters.”
“But what if Zhou Tian doesn’t want the child? Are you going to raise it alone?” Xu Baiqiu asked coolly.
That silenced Fei Xing’en.
After all, Wen Mingzhi herself had been abandoned at birth. Her mother and mama had left her with her grandmother and disappeared into their messy relationships. To this day, there was rarely any news from them.
She had grown up with that pain. She didn’t want her child to suffer the same fate.
“So now what? Zhou Tian doesn’t even like Mingzhi anymore…” Fei Xing’en muttered, clearly overwhelmed.
“Mingzhi, what do you want?” Xu Baiqiu asked seriously, eyes locked on her.
“…I don’t know,” Wen whispered, brows deeply furrowed.
Silence settled over the office once again. All three were weighed down by heavy thoughts.
That evening, just like usual, Wen Mingzhi went to pick Zhou Tian up from the Sunshine Happiness Community.
“President Wen,” Zhou Tian greeted her as she got into the car.
She’d been joking with Xia Ruo that this felt like clocking in to work every night.
The car was quiet. Wen hadn’t said a word that morning, and now again she was silent. Had she finally given up?
Zhou Tian peeked at her and met those piercing phoenix eyes—eyes full of stormy, unreadable emotion. It felt suffocating.
“Tian Tian, I need to tell you something,” Wen said, her brows twitching slightly, hesitation lacing her voice.
Zhou Tian froze, a sense of unease creeping in. “What is it?”
“I’m pregnant,” Wen said finally, letting out the sentence that had been stuck in her throat all day.
She stared at Zhou Tian, watching for any reaction.
Zhou Tian looked like she’d been struck by lightning, stunned completely still.
“…Are you serious?” she asked after what felt like forever.
“I am.” Wen nodded, handing her the report.
Zhou Tian’s hands trembled as she held it.
“…Wait. Is the child mine?” she asked in disbelief.
“Yes,” Wen replied coldly. Did she really think otherwise?
“Hold on, hold on…” Zhou Tian stared at her flat belly, then looked up at that icy face glaring at her like she was ready to kill.
“President Wen, you can’t blame me for this! It was Lü Ningyue’s drug—”
“What do you want to do about it?” Wen asked, her voice lower and icier than usual, chilling Zhou Tian to the bone.
“I’ll take responsibility. I’ll work hard and raise the child. I’m not that irresponsible!” Zhou Tian said firmly, though her heart was full of panic.
“You want the baby?” Wen’s tone softened slightly, eyes flickering with curiosity.
“Huh? Can we not keep it?” Zhou Tian blurted, still in a daze.
“Zhou Tian!” Wen’s expression darkened. Her narrowed eyes flashed with murderous intent.
“Wait! I didn’t mean that—” Zhou Tian hurried to explain.
“What do you think I should do?” Wen asked, still watching her intently.
“You’re the one giving birth,” Zhou Tian muttered. “It’s your call…”
“What if I don’t want this child?” Wen asked with an emotionless smile curling her lips.
Zhou Tian froze. Her face fell into shadow, lips pressed thin.
Wen Mingzhi’s heart lightened. Zhou Tian cared. She really cared about this child.
“Of course, it’s up to you,” Zhou Tian said, though her brows stayed furrowed. She was reminded that Wen Mingzhi still had a fiancée.
“Alright,” Wen finally relaxed.
Zhou Tian’s wide eyes were filled with worry. She stared at Wen’s belly, thoughts swimming in her mind.
Wen’s smile deepened. This was the first time Zhou Tian looked at her like this—with concern.
“I haven’t decided yet, but since I’m pregnant, shouldn’t you take care of me?” Wen teased with a rare softness in her eyes.
“Of course. I will,” Zhou Tian replied immediately.
“Then move back to the Emerald Garden. It’ll be easier to take care of me—and the baby.”
“…Okay,” Zhou Tian nodded slowly. Something felt off.
“Thanks in advance for taking care of us.” Wen patted her belly.
“…Okay.” Zhou Tian’s gaze lingered on her abdomen, heavy with thought.
She had planned to cut ties—but now, they were even more entangled.
And now… they had a baby.
