Chapter 45: Damn… Zhou Tian, You’re Really Something!
When going to Qisheng’s headquarters with Wen Mingzhi, Zhou Tian deliberately disguised herself—hat, mask, the whole nine yards—terrified of being recognized.
This kind of public place was full of people, and standing beside the illustrious Wen Mingzhi only made her even more noticeable. So Zhou Tian was extra cautious to avoid being seen.
As soon as they stepped into the lobby and entered the executive elevator, employees along the way began casting covert glances in their direction.
Whispers floated through the air:
“Did President Wen get a new assistant? Who’s the one next to Assistant Chen?”
“She looks like an alpha. Did President Wen hire an alpha assistant? That can’t be right…”
“Her figure looks kind of familiar? Don’t tell me… it’s President Wen’s girlfriend? Why else would she be wrapped up so tightly?”
“…”
Very quickly, the company’s internal chat groups were flooded with gossip: President Wen brought an alpha to the office!! Some said it was her fiancée, others thought it might be a business partner, but with how tightly this alpha was covered, suspicions ran high—everyone guessed she was President Wen’s girlfriend.
So the news that President Wen brought her girlfriend to work spread like wildfire. Everyone secretly kept tabs on the alpha’s movements.
Blurry photos began circulating online. The familiar figure, signature fashion items—Zhou Tian’s identity was soon uncovered.
There had long been rumors that Wen Mingzhi was Zhou Tian’s sugar mama. But now, this scene of them being inseparable completely confirmed the speculation.
No one expected Zhou Tian to suddenly become Wen Mingzhi’s girlfriend—and even accompany her to work at the headquarters!
Speculation exploded online. Zhou Tian’s past scandals and black material were dug up and wiped clean.
Within moments, the topic shot to the top of the trending list.
Back in Wen Mingzhi’s office, Zhou Tian frowned deeply. She had clearly disguised herself well—how did they still figure it out!?
She had barely gotten a break before landing on the hot search again?
Zhou Tian shot Wen Mingzhi a fierce glare. The latter was sitting calmly behind her desk, working.
She hadn’t realized just how much public attention Wen Mingzhi attracted. Truly a regular on the trending charts.
She stared at the endless stream of pop-up notifications on her phone, her delicate face scrunched in frustration.
Just then, Xia Ruo called.
“Tian Tian, what’s going on!? Why are you with Wen Mingzhi? At Qisheng headquarters no less!?” she fired off one question after another.
“Uh… Sister Xia, cough, about that… calm down first,” Zhou Tian quickly got up and moved to the floor-to-ceiling windows in the corner.
“What’s going on? Spill it! What kind of trouble are you in? Did Wen Mingzhi do something to you!?” Xia Ruo’s guesses ran wild.
“No, no… Calm down, Sister Xia.” Zhou Tian felt guilty for some reason. “Wen Mingzhi… is pregnant. It’s my child.”
“WHAT!? Damn… Zhou Tian, you’re really something!” Xia Ruo yelled in shock, blurting out a curse.
“Wait a second—what does that have to do with going to Qisheng?” she asked, confused.
“I need to take care of her. I mean, she’s pregnant now, right?” Zhou Tian frowned.
“Holy crap. Tian Tian, you’re seriously becoming a mom now…” Xia Ruo was stunned, unsure where to even begin.
“But wait—is Wen Mingzhi actually planning to have the baby?” Her tone shifted suddenly.
“She probably will… She said she needs to think about it carefully.” Zhou Tian’s brows knitted tightly.
“…Okay…” Xia Ruo was overwhelmed—there were too many questions, and she didn’t know where to start.
“Well, that’s the gist of it. I’ll explain more later.” Zhou Tian glanced sideways at Wen Mingzhi.
The woman was sitting at her desk, hands clasped under her chin, smiling as she looked over.
Zhou Tian shot her a frosty glare and quickly turned her head away to escape her gaze. This woman could still smile? With so much mess going on?
“Alright… So about the trending topic—should I even bother with PR? Will Wen Mingzhi’s people handle it?” Xia Ruo asked.
“Yeah, yeah, let them deal with it.” Zhou Tian replied quickly.
After hanging up, her phone was still buzzing nonstop.
Apart from endless mentions and messages from various apps, her contacts were also messaging her gossip questions.
Zhou Tian’s tight expression eased a little as she sat back on the sofa and took a sip of spring water.
She was currently following a “healthy lifestyle” alongside Wen Mingzhi.
She tapped into her group chat with Wen Qingying and Liang Xirui.
Wen Qingying: Tian Tian, why are you at President Wen’s company? What’s your status now? Weren’t you staying home writing songs lately? … (attached: big confused emoji)
Liang Xirui: WTF!? Tian Tian, are you with Wen Mingzhi now? Why’d you go there!? Did she threaten or force you…?
Reading their flood of questions, Zhou Tian couldn’t help but smile faintly.
Zhou Tian: It’s nothing, don’t worry… It’s just a personal matter. Didn’t expect to be caught and end up trending.
She kept it vague and then clicked into her chat with Bai Qianxue.
Bai Qianxue: Zhou Tian, are you back with Wen Mingzhi? I heard she’s been chasing you lately?
Zhou Tian rubbed her forehead with a bitter smile. Where was all this gossip coming from?
Zhou Tian: Ms. Bai, don’t believe the rumors. There’s nothing going on—please don’t spread nonsense.
Bai Qianxue: I’m not making it up! At that XXX brand gala and the afterparty, you two were all flirty. Wen Mingzhi was clearly treating you differently. Didn’t she just clear all your black press and drop serious cash recently? That’s a big move.
Zhou Tian: …
Hearing it put that way, it did seem like Wen Mingzhi had done a lot for her lately. But… so what? A lot of it was because Wen Mingzhi caused the problems in the first place. Cleaning it up was just her responsibility. Zhou Tian never asked her to do any of it.
Bai Qianxue: Does she like you?
Zhou Tian paused. Her eyes flickered with some complex emotion as she looked toward Wen Mingzhi sitting nearby.
She wore a crisp, tailored white blouse, a button left open to reveal her pale collarbone. Her sleeves were rolled up to expose her graceful forearms, cinched by sapphire cufflinks. Elegant and polished—exuding a commanding, aristocratic air.
Her black, slightly wavy hair draped over one shoulder while the other side was tucked neatly behind her ear. Elegant, radiant—like a perfect white blossom blooming on a high peak: dazzling and untouchable.
Zhou Tian stared at Wen Mingzhi as she worked—completely lost in thought.
Wen Mingzhi looked up, catching Zhou Tian’s dazed gaze—clearly mesmerized by her.
Her lips curved into a gentle smile, those sharp phoenix eyes softening with a faint warmth.
Meeting her gaze, she beamed.
Zhou Tian immediately dropped her eyes and instinctively licked her lips.
There’s no way someone like Wen Mingzhi would like her. What a joke.
Someone so powerful, so proud—perched on a throne high above everyone—how could she truly love anyone?
At most, she’d enjoy playing with a beloved toy or teasing a favored pet, showing a fleeting bit of interest.
To Wen Mingzhi, she was just that. A creature nestled in her palm, completely within her grasp. Her favor was a gift. Her distance, the norm.
Zhou Tian had been with her for over a year. She understood this well.
She shook her head, dismissing the thought.
Zhou Tian: Impossible.
Her brows pinched slightly. Things between her and Wen Mingzhi were already so tangled. If Wen Mingzhi actually fell for her, it’d only make things worse.
Just then, a cool voice startled her.
“What are you thinking about, Tian Tian?” Wen Mingzhi had somehow come over and stood right in front of her.
“…Nothing,” Zhou Tian quickly stowed her phone.
Wen Mingzhi sat down close—too close.
“You looked really focused. What’s on your mind?” she asked softly, scooting even closer.
“…That trending topic.” Zhou Tian frowned.
“So what?” Wen Mingzhi replied, calm and smiling gently at her.
“Aren’t you going to do something about it?”
“It’s just gossip. Nothing serious. Everyone knows we’re together now—what’s wrong with that?” Wen Mingzhi smiled.
“What?” Zhou Tian’s brows furrowed sharply.
What was that supposed to mean!?
Back when they were together, she’d wanted them to be seen together, to have even the faintest of rumors. It would’ve felt like a public confession.
But now? They weren’t anything. She was done with Wen Mingzhi and wanted to stay far away.
If Wen Mingzhi had gossip with anyone, it should NOT be her.
“Free traffic on the hot search—great for publicity,” Wen Mingzhi said, unfazed.
“President Wen, this kind of rumor isn’t good for your image.” Zhou Tian grasped for an excuse.
“Image is just a label.” She shrugged it off.
“But it’s bad for my reputation,” Zhou Tian emphasized. She really didn’t want her name tied to Wen Mingzhi’s.
“Tian Tian, if that’s what you’re worried about, don’t be. The PR team is already managing the narrative.”
“…Okay.” Zhou Tian nodded, though still troubled.
“If it really bothers you, there won’t be any photos leaked in the future,” Wen Mingzhi added with a soft smile.
“In the future?” Zhou Tian looked up at her.
Wen Mingzhi’s elegant face was relaxed, her brows soft, eyes warm—a completely different version from the woman she used to know.
“President Wen, I think it’s best if I stop coming here.” Zhou Tian said coldly.
“Why? You said you’d take care of me.” Wen Mingzhi pouted, a hint of grievance in her voice.
“…It’s just inconvenient.”
“It won’t happen again. I swear.” she promised sincerely.
“You have Assistant Chen and plenty of secretaries…” Zhou Tian argued. She hadn’t even been here that long and had already seen a dozen different assistants.
“But you are the child’s mother.” Wen Mingzhi’s tone dropped, eyes dimming with disappointment.
Zhou Tian swallowed, her wide peach blossom eyes flickering with hesitation.
“Tian Tian, were you lying to me? You don’t want to take care of me now—how will you take care of the baby later?” Wen Mingzhi sighed, looking pitiful.
In that moment, Zhou Tian suddenly felt like the bad guy. Guilt bubbled up.
“That’s not it… I just don’t want to get in your way.” She rushed to explain.
“You won’t. You being here makes me happy and productive. That’s good for the baby, right?”
As she spoke, her hand slithered around Zhou Tian’s waist, pulling her close, resting her head gently against her neck.
From the outside, they looked like an affectionate couple.
…
“Hmph.” Wen Mingzhi stared straight at Zhou Tian, who was sitting far away on the other end of the sofa, deliberately keeping her distance.
The gentleness in her eyes had faded a bit.
Even though Zhou Tian was right there beside her, Wen Mingzhi felt like the distance between them was insurmountable. Zhou Tian hadn’t changed at all—she remained cold and indifferent toward her.
Even though they were permanently marked, even though they now had a child together and had decided to raise the child together… Zhou Tian still treated her like this, distant and aloof.
Wen Mingzhi’s long fingers tapped lightly on the armrest of the sofa, her gaze darkening.
The room quieted for a moment. Zhou Tian noticed the change in atmosphere and instinctively looked up. As soon as her eyes met Wen Mingzhi’s, she immediately looked away.
That pair of sharp, phoenix eyes held too many complex emotions, as if they could see right through her.
Zhou Tian’s throat tightened. She said nothing and just tightened her grip on her phone.
Suddenly, Wen Mingzhi stood up.
“Let’s go.” Her voice was low and calm.
Zhou Tian was startled. “Where?”
“Lunch.”
“Oh…” Zhou Tian was momentarily speechless, then nodded. “Okay.”
Wen Mingzhi had already grabbed her coat and was heading for the door.
Zhou Tian stood up and followed after her. As she passed by Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu, she gave a polite nod.
“We’re going to eat. You two figure out the rest,” Wen Mingzhi said without looking back.
Fei Xing’en looked at Xu Baiqiu and raised an eyebrow. “Are we… being kicked out?”
Xu Baiqiu folded her arms and said coolly, “That’s pretty much it.”
Fei Xing’en: “Alright, alright, we’ll go. Geez, just say it more bluntly next time.”
The two of them walked out together, grumbling in low voices.
Inside the elevator, Wen Mingzhi leaned against the wall while Zhou Tian stood to the side, silent.
Wen Mingzhi glanced at her. “What are you thinking?”
“Nothing,” Zhou Tian quickly replied.
“You’re always spacing out.”
Zhou Tian lowered her head. “Sorry.”
“I didn’t say it was a bad thing.” Wen Mingzhi’s voice was low, with a faint hint of amusement.
Zhou Tian looked up in surprise, only to see a trace of a smile at the corner of Wen Mingzhi’s lips.
She quickly looked away again.
Ding— The elevator arrived at the underground parking lot.
Wen Mingzhi walked ahead, and Zhou Tian followed closely behind.
The two got into the car. The driver was already waiting and immediately started the engine when they were seated.
On the way, Wen Mingzhi casually scrolled through her phone, while Zhou Tian stared out the window, her mind blank.
After a while, Wen Mingzhi suddenly asked, “Want to eat at Yusheng Pavilion or Xinyue Hall?”
Zhou Tian paused for a moment. “Yusheng Pavilion.”
“Okay.”
The driver changed directions accordingly.
Wen Mingzhi turned to look at her. “You still remember that place?”
Zhou Tian gave a soft “mm.”
That was the place where they had dined the first time Wen Mingzhi officially brought her out.
She remembered everything clearly.
After a moment of silence, Wen Mingzhi said softly, “You remember more than I thought.”
Zhou Tian turned her face slightly, not responding.
Soon, the car arrived at Yusheng Pavilion.
Wen Mingzhi had already made a reservation. The staff respectfully led them to a private room.
After ordering, Zhou Tian kept her gaze down, sipping tea quietly.
Wen Mingzhi rested her cheek on her hand, quietly watching her.
The atmosphere was both quiet and intimate, yet faintly strained.
After a while, Wen Mingzhi asked, “Zhou Tian, do you hate me?”
Zhou Tian’s hand trembled, and the teacup tilted slightly.
She hurriedly steadied it. “No.”
Wen Mingzhi smiled lightly. “Then why do you always seem like you’re running away from me?”
Zhou Tian bit her lip. “I just… don’t know how to face you.”
“Because I hurt you before?”
Zhou Tian remained silent.
Wen Mingzhi didn’t press her, just reached out to pour tea for her and said gently, “Then don’t think too much. I’ll take it slow.”
Zhou Tian’s eyes widened slightly. She looked up at her in disbelief.
Wen Mingzhi smiled faintly. “Since we have a child now, we should take things one step at a time.”
“…You mean, you want to start over?” Zhou Tian’s voice trembled a little.
Wen Mingzhi didn’t answer directly. “I want to give you time to adjust.”
Zhou Tian was stunned, her lips parted slightly but unable to respond.
At that moment, the dishes were served. Wen Mingzhi took her chopsticks and gently picked up a piece of fish, placing it into Zhou Tian’s bowl.
“Eat while it’s hot,” she said softly.
Zhou Tian looked at the fish in her bowl, then at the warm expression on Wen Mingzhi’s face.
For a moment, her heart stirred.
But she quickly pressed it down.
She couldn’t afford to be soft-hearted now. Not again.
Because this time… she wasn’t the only one who would get hurt.
