Chapter 46: Of Course, It Was When She Was With Her Ex-Girlfriend
Wen Mingzhi’s brows furrowed slightly, a deep, ink-like emotion darkening her eyes.
On the other end of the couch, Zhou Tian still sat with her head down, staring at her phone, looking as indifferent as ever. To be precise, she seemed completely uninterested in Wen Mingzhi.
Even if she was interested, it was only for the sake of the child.
That thought alone tightened Wen Mingzhi’s lips into a straight line. Her expression turned cool and austere—unlike earlier, when she looked at Zhou Tian with traces of softness and even a rare, surprising smile.
At least to Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu, Wen Mingzhi’s smile was a rare sight. It made them uncertain—was she seriously falling for Zhou Tian?
Could she really like Zhou Tian?
Xu Baiqiu looked up at her with a thoughtful expression.
Fei Xing’en, on the other hand, still wore her usual cheerful look and didn’t take it seriously.
After a moment, Wen Mingzhi took a sip of mineral water, then stood and walked over to her desk to resume work. But the cold aura she exuded gradually filled the room.
At times, her brows furrowed and her lips turned down, as if she were facing something urgent and troubling at work.
Meanwhile, Zhou Tian remained on the couch, her game screen greyed out. She frowned, unable to understand why Wen Mingzhi insisted on having her here. What could she possibly contribute?
Did Wen Mingzhi think she could help her with work or improve efficiency? Wen Mingzhi clearly had everything she needed. Zhou Tian’s presence only stirred rumors and pushed them onto the trending topics—again—fueling gossip and public scorn.
Sitting here, Zhou Tian only felt like Wen Mingzhi had her firmly under control. She felt stifled, like a canary kept in a gilded cage, expected to obey, be molded, and please her master.
She frowned deeply, glancing at her phone. Her character had respawned in the game, but she didn’t move. Her eyes flickered with complicated emotions.
She shouldn’t be here. This wasn’t her place.
In the spacious office, everyone minded their own business. Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu had also started playing games.
Usually when they visited Wen Mingzhi, it was either to chat or hang around playing games. There was nowhere more comfortable than here: ideal temperature, spacious environment, endless tea and snacks, lunch provided, and sometimes they’d even dine out together and catch up. It was perfect—so perfect that they came whenever they had time.
Assistant Chen glanced up, slightly puzzled. The atmosphere in the room had shifted. It was like a thick cloud of gloom had descended—dark and heavy, pressing down on everyone’s chest, making the air feel stifling and tense, as if a storm was coming.
Even though the room was brightly lit, it felt like a shadow had crept in, tightening around them.
Wen Mingzhi looked upset, and Zhou Tian didn’t look much better.
But… they hadn’t even argued?
Chen felt confused.
She glanced at Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu again. They seemed completely oblivious, still engrossed in their games.
“…”
Zhou Tian’s phone kept pinging with notifications. She opened one and browsed. On the Da Yanzi app, she and Wen Mingzhi were trending together again. Her past was being dredged up—false accusations, maliciously twisted gossip, ludicrous rumors… A flood of negativity, none of it kind.
Reading the hateful comments, Zhou Tian pursed her lips and furrowed her brow. She looked up at Wen Mingzhi—the one who started all of this—who was still working, her expression composed and elegant, the soft charm gone, replaced with a cool, distant allure.
Zhou Tian rarely saw this side of her. The saying that a woman focused on work is the most attractive must have been referring to someone like Wen Mingzhi.
The scene was undeniably pleasant to look at, and Zhou Tian found herself watching her for a few more moments, quietly impressed.
It was just a shame… it was Wen Mingzhi.
Now, she couldn’t bring herself to feel anything more for her.
After a while, she lowered her head again, scrolling through her phone. Her private messages and mentions were a never-ending barrage of veiled insults, tearing her down and painting her as flawed and disgraceful.
Zhou Tian exited the app and returned to her game.
From her desk, Wen Mingzhi was quietly observing her the whole time and didn’t miss the intensity of that gaze earlier.
Her lips involuntarily curved into a smile, the tension in her face easing a little. She looked up.
Zhou Tian had lowered her soft, fluffy head. Her sleek black hair fell neatly over her face, youthful and lively, but weighed down by the heaviness of her thoughts. Gone was the carefree energy—replaced now with a quiet maturity.
Wen Mingzhi suddenly remembered their first meeting. Zhou Tian had been so shy and innocent, her blushing face practically shouting “I like you.”
Now… all that remained was indifference and cold detachment.
Wen Mingzhi lowered her gaze to the tablet in front of her, sighing softly.
“…”
Fei Xing’en was genuinely absorbed in her game, while Xu Baiqiu kept a watchful eye on the subtle tension between Zhou Tian and Wen Mingzhi.
Clearly, Mingzhi cared deeply. But Zhou Tian remained distant. Even with a child involved, their relationship hadn’t softened.
So…
During a lull in conversation, Xu Baiqiu suddenly asked, “Zhou Tian, do you really want this child?”
“Mhm, of course.” Zhou Tian nodded without hesitation, though her expression was puzzled.
“But you seem pretty cold toward Mingzhi. Are you sure that after the baby is born, you’ll still be okay interacting like this?” Xu Baiqiu frowned.
“Yeah, Zhou Tian, Mingzhi has been really good to you lately,” Fei Xing’en chimed in.
Wen Mingzhi turned toward the floor-to-ceiling window, her stunning side profile making it impossible to read her thoughts.
“…” Zhou Tian had no rebuttal—because they were right.
She still had some resistance toward Wen Mingzhi. She had resolved not to get entangled with her again, but one thing after another kept tying them together. Honestly, it was Mingzhi’s persistent interference that created this mess.
And to think, she once swore she’d never force anything…
“Probably not,” Zhou Tian finally replied after a long pause.
“‘Probably’ not?” Xu Baiqiu raised a brow.
“Maybe… who knows, maybe by then things will be different. No one can predict the future,” Zhou Tian said calmly.
She had thought about this before, but decided to leave it to time.
If they really had a child together, maybe—just maybe—they’d grow closer again.
After all, who would’ve thought they’d end up like this?
Time would tell where things would go from here.
Wen Mingzhi was still looking out the window, lost in thought. But upon hearing Zhou Tian’s words, she turned to her, stunned.
This time, Zhou Tian’s words weren’t cold or resolute—they left room for possibility.
Wen Mingzhi’s lips curved into the faintest smile. She looked at Zhou Tian, and the oppressive weight on her chest lightened considerably. There was still hope. Maybe, just maybe, Zhou Tian would smile at her again one day.
But no matter what, they could never return to the past.
In the time she had neglected her, Zhou Tian had grown up—no longer the naive alpha who relied on Wen Mingzhi’s support.
She didn’t need Wen Mingzhi’s influence anymore. She’d established herself in the music industry, with her own vision and ambitions.
Wen Mingzhi suddenly realized Zhou Tian was already 25 years old. Young by many standards, but undeniably an adult now.
A complex emotion rose in her chest, leaving her feeling drained. She’d always been the one in control—especially of the weaker Zhou Tian.
But now she couldn’t even control her own heart, let alone their relationship’s future.
She stared blankly at the tablet in front of her, long lashes half-lowered to hide her stormy emotions. The usual aloofness in her expression had faded, replaced by quiet confusion etched into her brows.
Zhou Tian was stubborn.
But so was she.
Wen Mingzhi licked her lips and took a sip of water. Everything that had happened recently… maybe she’d pushed Zhou Tian too hard. She had focused too much on her own wants and ignored everything else.
“…”
Xu Baiqiu said no more. Fei Xing’en didn’t quite understand—it all seemed simple to her. Just talk things through peacefully.
Assistant Chen nodded slightly, continuing her work with thoughtful silence.
From her perspective, they had simply missed each other—at the best possible time, unable to truly see and appreciate one another’s goodness.
“…”
The elegant office atmosphere shifted again—becoming more relaxed, even a little pleasant.
That vague cloud of unease? Somehow, it had quietly lifted.
Everyone went on with their business, but something intangible had changed.
“…”
Whenever her game character died, Zhou Tian would subconsciously glance at Wen Mingzhi.
At times, Mingzhi rested her chin on one hand, the other hand raised—revealing pale skin marred with faint, pinkish scars across the back of her hand, like an artwork carelessly defaced.
Zhou Tian stared at her hand, brows furrowed.
She wondered if those scars could be treated. Then she opened a browser and started searching.
A faint smile appeared on her lips, tinged with bitterness. Wen Mingzhi had a private physician. Surely she didn’t need her concern.
She locked her phone screen and picked up her cup for a sip of water.
Just as she looked down, Wen Mingzhi looked up. Her cold expression had softened, and her long, phoenix-shaped eyes curved with a faint smile—bright and beautiful.
Zhou Tian must care at least a little. That intense, focused gaze—it wasn’t something easily missed.
With that, the gloom in Wen Mingzhi’s chest dissipated a bit.
She looked out the window again. The sky was blue and clear, the sun shining brightly—a beautiful day.
She glanced at the time. 11:30 AM. Just right.
She suddenly spoke. “Let’s go eat. Lunch.” Her voice was calm and clear. “To Xingyue Zhai,” she added.
“What? Did the sun rise from the west today? You’re not going back to work this afternoon?” Xu Baiqiu teased.
“Let’s go, let’s go. No need to dawdle for food,” Fei Xing’en said cheerfully, pulling Xu Baiqiu toward the door.
“Let’s go, Tian Tian,” Wen Mingzhi leaned toward her.
“Mhm.” Zhou Tian put away her phone, adjusted her mask and hat. At this point, she wasn’t even sure these things helped anymore.
Assistant Chen was the first to leave the office to prepare the car.
They all took the private elevator straight to the underground garage.
Zhou Tian frowned slightly. “If we could come directly, why didn’t we take the garage route earlier?”
“…” Assistant Chen hesitated.
Wen Mingzhi replied lightly, “Didn’t think of it.”
“We usually come in through the main entrance,” Assistant Chen explained.
Zhou Tian began to suspect that Wen Mingzhi had done it on purpose.
She couldn’t help thinking so—Wen Mingzhi was shrewd and strategic, always planning far ahead.
Zhou Tian sighed. Whether it was deliberate or not, it didn’t matter anymore.
They rode in a stretch Lincoln, spacious enough to fit ten more people. Yet in all that room, Wen Mingzhi still chose to sit right next to her.
Zhou Tian shifted away, but Wen Mingzhi mirrored her move.
“Wen Zong, this is a bit tight,” Zhou Tian said helplessly.
“Tight? Where?” Wen Mingzhi feigned innocence, eyes smiling softly.
Zhou Tian shot her a fierce glare, on the verge of switching seats.
But just then, Wen Mingzhi moved a little away, finally creating space between them.
Zhou Tian raised a brow in surprise. Wen Mingzhi gave in?
That didn’t happen often.
On the road, Zhou Tian checked her phone, reading up on pregnancy precautions. She needed to commit them to memory.
Wen Mingzhi had many bad habits. Though she hadn’t smoked lately, she was still drinking coffee, tea, or wine… And she was a workaholic, with irregular meals.
Impossible not to worry.
Wen Mingzhi leaned over, as if resting on her shoulder, reading along with her.
Though she was close, it was better than before. Zhou Tian didn’t push her away. She simply tilted her head in the opposite direction to maintain some distance.
They finally arrived at Xingyue Zhai, a restaurant not located in the city but nestled in a forest in the suburbs, tranquil and uniquely charming.
They walked up stone steps toward the restaurant at the top of a small hill.
The weather was good, but the humidity in the forest made moss grow on the stone steps. Zhou Tian followed behind, watching Wen Mingzhi’s steps.
“Slow down, Wen Zong. Be careful,” she called out, worried as Wen Mingzhi took two or three steps at a time.
“…Okay.” The slim figure paused briefly. Then her gentle voice floated back.
Where Zhou Tian couldn’t see, Wen Mingzhi’s lips curled into a soft, radiant smile.
They soon reached the wooden restaurant, built entirely of timber and in harmony with its surroundings. The windows were open, and thin gauzy curtains floated in the breeze like mountain mist.
They sat by the window, taking in the floral scenery—bushes full of vibrant blooms of various colors and species, carefully cultivated or naturally grown. It was breathtaking.
The peaceful atmosphere slowly soothed their hearts.
Wen Mingzhi sat beside Zhou Tian, while Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu sat across from them. Assistant Chen sat to the side.
“This place is really nice,” Xu Baiqiu commented.
“Trust Mingzhi to have good taste. Buying this place was a great idea,” Fei Xing’en nodded in agreement.
Zhou Tian sipped floral tea, looking out the window.
Wen Mingzhi, however, gazed at Zhou Tian—who looked even more beautiful framed by such scenery.
“Tian Tian, do you like it here?” Wen Mingzhi suddenly asked.
“Hmm?” Zhou Tian turned to her, confused.
“If you like it, I’ll find a place to build another house like this,” Wen Mingzhi said calmly. “We could live here with the baby.”
“…Huh?” Zhou Tian blinked. Was Wen Mingzhi thinking too far ahead?
Still, letting the child grow up surrounded by nature wasn’t a bad idea. It probably was time to start preparing.
“It’s fine either way,” Zhou Tian replied. She didn’t care much. If it was for the child, fine. But if it was for her, it wasn’t necessary.
“Okay.” Wen Mingzhi gave her a soft smile.
Zhou Tian turned back to the scenery. It really was beautiful—nothing like the city.
She didn’t dwell on what Wen Mingzhi meant by “okay,” or whether she’d really follow through.
“What? I want one too! Mingzhi, save me a room,” Fei Xing’en said excitedly.
“Me too,” Xu Baiqiu added shamelessly.
“Let’s not jump the gun. I’m not even sure there’s a suitable spot in City A yet,” Wen Mingzhi said lightly.
The tranquility of the forest, the gentle breeze—it all seemed to soothe the soul.
But Zhou Tian couldn’t forget her frustrations. After all, the person responsible was sitting right next to her.
Dishes were soon served. The tableware was also hand-carved from special wood.
There was no menu. The chefs based dishes on what the local villagers harvested that day. Everything was fresh, skillfully cooked by top chefs, beautifully presented, and delicious beyond words.
Zhou Tian had just picked up her chopsticks when Wen Mingzhi placed a piece of steamed fish in her bowl.
Zhou Tian paused, then softly said, “Thank you.”
Seeing that Zhou Tian didn’t reject her, Wen Mingzhi couldn’t help but smile, her long phoenix eyes curving gently—radiant like the day’s sunlight.
Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu were briefly stunned. It had been a long time since they’d seen Mingzhi smile like that. But no one spoke to break the moment.
Assistant Chen, meanwhile, lowered her presence and quietly ate.
Encouraged, Wen Mingzhi added a piece of braised beef to Zhou Tian’s bowl.
Zhou Tian obediently ate it.
Wen Mingzhi smiled again and kept piling food onto her plate until it was half full.
Zhou Tian finally looked up. “Wen Zong, you should eat too.”
“Okay,” Wen Mingzhi beamed at her.
Zhou Tian had finally shown concern for her. Wen Mingzhi’s heart skipped a beat. Whether it was for the baby or something else didn’t matter—Zhou Tian cared.
Zhou Tian ate slowly. She only said that because Wen Mingzhi was being annoying. She could serve herself just fine.
Dishes came one after another. The final dish was seasonal sliced peaches, beautifully arranged.
Assistant Chen had already finished and moved to stand nearby.
Wen Mingzhi and Zhou Tian ate slowly—mainly because Wen Mingzhi was staring at her the whole time.
Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu had finished and still sat at the table.
Zhou Tian, feeling awkward under her gaze, kept giving her food. Mingzhi, as if enjoying the attention, stared even more.
And so, a cycle began: Wen Mingzhi stared, Zhou Tian gave her food.
Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu wandered into the flower-filled garden for a walk.
Suddenly, Xu Baiqiu asked, “Xing’en, when was the last time you saw Mingzhi like that?”
Fei Xing’en answered casually, “Of course, when she was with her ex-girlfriend.”
