Chapter 48: Did Zhou Tian Drug You or Something?
For the first time, Wen Mingzhi felt lost and helpless. Her rosy lips were pressed into a firm line, and her eyes were dark and murky, as if soaked in ink. A deep crease formed between her brows as anxiety continued to brew inside her, weighing heavily on her heart.
After a while, she took out her phone and started scrolling. She meant to read the news, but the algorithm kept pushing articles about pregnancy—tips for expectant mothers, fetal development guides, and pregnancy dos and don’ts. The more she read, the deeper her frown became.
Soon, Zhou Tian stepped out of the bathroom. She was dressed in a set of pure cream-colored silk pajamas, her long, straight, black hair hanging down her front, the ends still damp and misted with droplets.
Wen Mingzhi quickly masked her emotions, lifting the corners of her lips into a faint smile. “Tiantian, how was the recording today?”
“It went well,” Zhou Tian replied while towel-drying the ends of her hair.
“That’s good. If anything feels inconvenient, let Xiao Chen know.” Wen Mingzhi stood up and approached her, gently lifting a strand of her damp hair.
“No need. Everything’s fine. Sister Xia takes care of everything,” Zhou Tian declined without hesitation, walking toward the sofa to put some distance between them.
After terminating their contract with Qisheng Qianhua Entertainment, they never signed with another agency. Zhou Tian was now an independent musician, with Sister Xia as her manager. The two had discussed it and planned to start their own music studio, which was far better than being under a traditional agency.
Over the years, Zhou Tian and Xia Ruo had weathered many storms in the entertainment industry together. Having made it this far showed they were capable. They didn’t need to rely on powerful backers.
Even when she was signed under Wen Mingzhi’s company, the negatives often outweighed the benefits. Though she now had a hit song purely on her own merit, the public still had nothing nice to say. Gossip and slander constantly followed her.
Even now, many in the industry gossiped behind her back and judged her openly.
“…Alright.” Wen Mingzhi replied flatly, the smile in her eyes dimming.
“Aren’t you going to sleep?” Zhou Tian asked, puzzled by the fact that Wen Mingzhi was still dressed in her pale lavender tracksuit.
“I am.” Wen Mingzhi rose and went to the bathroom to change into sleepwear.
Standing at the sink, she stared at herself in the mirror, her brows drawn together, her phoenix-shaped eyes full of hesitation. How was she supposed to tell Zhou Tian about the baby? Or rather, should she even tell her?
Dr. Guan had said there was a small chance of complications with the fetus. And Wen Mingzhi couldn’t help worrying. She knew how unhealthy her lifestyle had been during that period—drinking, smoking, and taking various medications while trying to regulate her body.
She had absolutely no confidence. As far as she was concerned, even a slight chance was too big. That’s why she didn’t dare to tell Zhou Tian outright.
She splashed her face with water and stepped out of the bathroom.
Zhou Tian was already half-lying on the bed, scrolling through her phone. Wen Mingzhi climbed in on the other side.
Neither of them said anything. Zhou Tian certainly wouldn’t initiate conversation, and Wen Mingzhi was too preoccupied.
And so, they turned their backs to each other, drifting off to sleep in silence. As night deepened, the temperature in the room seemed to drop with it, leaving a distinct sense of chill in the air.
—
The next day, both women rose early. Wen Mingzhi headed to the office, while Zhou Tian focused on composing her album. She already had three songs in progress but none were complete yet—they still needed refining. There was a chance she’d have to record more episodes of The Sound of Nature, so she had to prepare.
They continued their separate routines. Only at night did they see each other, exchanging brief greetings and checking in on one another.
—
As usual, Wen Mingzhi arrived at the office early. But whenever Zhou Tian wasn’t around, the warmth vanished from her face. Her expression became cold and stern, lips taut, phoenix eyes full of heavy gloom.
Through the rearview mirror, Assistant Chen glanced at her. Wen Mingzhi was staring out the window, her jawline tight and her features icy.
Assistant Chen sighed inwardly. Lately, the atmosphere in the office had grown so tense it was suffocating. On top of that, neither Fei Xing’en nor Xu Baiqiu had shown up in days.
Once they arrived at the company, Assistant Chen quietly returned to her desk and immersed herself in work. She didn’t even dare bring up minor issues to Wen Mingzhi anymore.
Suddenly, a knock came at the office door.
“Come in,” Wen Mingzhi said coolly.
The door opened, and in walked Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu.
Assistant Chen visibly relaxed at the sight of them.
“Mingzhi, long time no see!” Fei Xing’en greeted cheerfully.
“Where’s Zhou Tian?” Xu Baiqiu asked, lifting a brow in surprise.
“Yeah, why didn’t she come with you? Did you two fight?” Fei Xing’en plopped down on the sofa.
“What’s going on?” Xu Baiqiu gave Wen Mingzhi a curious glance, noticing her expression looked a little off.
“It’s nothing…” Wen Mingzhi responded softly, her tone laced with coldness.
Even Fei Xing’en could sense something was wrong.
“Wait, don’t tell me… Did you really fight with Zhou Tian?” Fei Xing’en asked, stunned.
“No,” Wen Mingzhi replied as she sipped from a glass of spring water, shooting them a cold glance. “What are you doing here?”
“What else? We obviously didn’t come to see you,” Fei Xing’en said with a cheeky grin.
“By the way, you had a medical checkup recently. How did it go?” Xu Baiqiu asked.
“Everything’s fine,” Wen Mingzhi answered vaguely, her brows knitting slightly.
“Hm? That doesn’t sound very convincing…” Xu Baiqiu muttered, sipping her coffee.
Wen Mingzhi didn’t reply. Fei Xing’en, however, stared at her intently, as if trying to read her mind.
“Something’s definitely off…” Fei Xing’en murmured.
Wen Mingzhi sighed faintly, then finally spoke: “Dr. Guan said there’s a chance the fetus might not develop properly.”
“What?!” Fei Xing’en’s eyes widened.
Xu Baiqiu froze, coffee cup halfway to her lips.
“My health wasn’t good during that period,” Wen Mingzhi explained, her brow furrowed tightly. The hand holding her pen subconsciously tensed.
“Are you serious?” Fei Xing’en looked shocked.
“We’ll just have to take it day by day,” Xu Baiqiu said lightly, taking a sip of coffee.
“You can’t just say that!” Fei Xing’en scolded. “It’s only a possibility, Mingzhi. Don’t overthink it.”
“Mingzhi hasn’t exactly taken good care of herself. You’ve seen her—smoking, drinking… it’s not surprising,” Xu Baiqiu muttered.
“Still, maybe everything will be okay…” Fei Xing’en’s voice faltered.
Behind the desk, Wen Mingzhi’s face darkened further. Her eyes glinted with a cold, murky light.
The atmosphere in the office dropped several degrees, filled with an oppressive chill.
“We’ll see what happens,” Xu Baiqiu said with a sigh.
Although she personally disliked Zhou Tian and didn’t want her entangled with Mingzhi, if Mingzhi was happy, there wasn’t much she could say.
Wen Mingzhi didn’t reply. She quietly took another sip of spring water.
The office fell into silence again. Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu exchanged thoughtful glances.
Assistant Chen looked toward Wen Mingzhi. The CEO was bent over her desk, reviewing contracts, but her face remained clouded with unease.
Xu Baiqiu really wasn’t helping—Assistant Chen had hoped someone would comfort their boss, not add to her worries.
“Mingzhi, is Zhou Tian upset about this?” Fei Xing’en suddenly asked.
“No. I haven’t told her yet,” Wen Mingzhi said coldly, not even looking up.
“Huh?” Fei Xing’en blinked in confusion.
“Xing’en, don’t be dense. Mingzhi and Zhou Tian didn’t fight. She’s just upset about this,” Xu Baiqiu explained.
“Ohhh… I see. But still, Mingzhi, it’s just a possibility. You shouldn’t let it get to you. Stress can affect the baby too,” Fei Xing’en advised.
Just as Xu Baiqiu was about to speak again, a knock came at the door.
“Come in,” Wen Mingzhi called.
In walked someone they hadn’t seen in a while—Situ Yujia.
“Situ? You’re here?” Fei Xing’en asked in surprise.
Wen Mingzhi frowned and glanced at Assistant Chen.
“She had an appointment with you, Wen Zong,” Assistant Chen quickly explained.
Now Wen Mingzhi remembered—Situ Yujia had some business to discuss with her, so she’d agreed to meet.
“What do you want, Situ Yujia?” Wen Mingzhi asked directly.
“Long time no see, Mingzhi.” Situ Yujia smiled.
Wen Mingzhi gave a slight nod.
“I heard you’re back with that little alpha?” Situ Yujia immediately confronted her.
“That’s none of your business,” Wen Mingzhi replied icily, shutting down any hope she had.
“I’m saying this as a long-time friend. That alpha isn’t worthy of you!” Situ Yujia said sharply.
Fei Xing’en and Xu Baiqiu exchanged glances.
“And I heard… you’re pregnant? Is that true?” Situ Yujia pressed.
Wen Mingzhi frowned deeper and shot a glance at the two on the sofa. How had this gotten out?
“Situ Yujia, I don’t owe you any explanations,” she said coldly, her tone steeped in authority.
“Xing’en, Baiqiu—is it true?” Situ turned to them.
The office fell deathly quiet, the air thick with tension and awkwardness.
Their silence was enough of an answer.
“You’re crazy! Did Zhou Tian drug you or something?” Situ Yujia shouted.
“Situ Yujia! This has nothing to do with you. You can leave now,” Wen Mingzhi barked, her voice icy and commanding.
“I’m only saying this for your own good…”
“I don’t need it.”
“You two aren’t going to stop her? Zhou Tian isn’t worthy of her!”
“Well, as long as Mingzhi is happy…” Xu Baiqiu said nonchalantly. “And Zhou Tian isn’t that bad.”
“Yeah, totally,” Fei Xing’en nodded quickly.
“You guys! Mingzhi, seriously—”
“Xiao Chen, see her out.” Wen Mingzhi turned to stare out the window, avoiding Situ’s gaze.
Situ Yujia was promptly escorted out.
Back in the now-tense office, Assistant Chen returned to her desk, the air thick with awkwardness.
“Don’t let her in again,” Wen Mingzhi said coldly.
“Yes, President Wen,” Assistant Chen responded.
Fei Xing’en shot Xu Baiqiu a desperate look, urging her to say something.
“Mingzhi… she wasn’t wrong, you know. Think it through. It’s not too late,” Xu Baiqiu said slowly.
“What do you mean not too late?! Mingzhi, don’t listen to her. Situ Yujia just doesn’t like Zhou Tian,” Fei Xing’en interrupted angrily.
“Just take care of yourself and the baby,” she added gently.
Xu Baiqiu shrugged helplessly.
Wen Mingzhi remained silent, sipping from her water glass. If she were the type to weigh pros and cons, she wouldn’t be with Zhou Tian, let alone pregnant with her child. But feelings can’t be controlled—she simply loved Zhou Tian. That was all there was to it.
After a long pause, she sighed and returned to reviewing her contracts.
Lately, Zhou Tian had been immersed in her music, leaving Wen Mingzhi feeling slightly neglected. But perhaps that was for the best—if Zhou Tian paid her too much attention, she might notice something.
Wen Mingzhi still hadn’t figured out how to tell her about the baby.
In her world, there was no such thing as “maybe.” Only absolute certainty. A risk to the baby, no matter how small, was a threat. And she had no way to control or change it. So she had no confidence at all.
That was the root of her anxiety.
When Zhou Tian went to film another episode of The Sound of Nature, Wen Mingzhi scheduled an appointment with Dr. Guan for a follow-up.
“Dr. Guan, is there no way to confirm the baby’s condition now?” she asked, frowning.
“President Wen, don’t worry. All indicators are perfectly normal right now,” the doctor said gently.
“But you said there’s a chance of abnormal development?”
“Yes, but it’s only a possibility. There’s no need to be overly anxious.”
“I just can’t shake the feeling…” Wen Mingzhi murmured.
“Even if there are issues, they vary in severity. It’s not something we can predict.”
“What if it is severe?” she asked, unable to hold back her worry.
“You’re really overthinking this. With modern medicine, even complications can be treated. And again, this is just a possibility.”
Wen Mingzhi nodded slowly, her brows still tightly drawn.
“Have you told your partner? You should talk to them. It’ll help ease your anxiety.”
She was silent for a while before finally nodding and leaving the hospital with Assistant Chen.
“Don’t worry, President Wen. The baby will be healthy,” Assistant Chen said, trying to comfort her.
“Maybe you should tell Zhou Tian…” she added.
This wasn’t something one should bear alone.
Wen Mingzhi didn’t respond. The test results had come back normal, but her heart remained unsettled.
“To the office,” she said with a long sigh.
—
Meanwhile, Zhou Tian was still on set, discussing music and industry news with the veteran artists.
She was thrilled to be invited back for two more episodes of The Sound of Nature. This time, she was performing a challenging new track from her upcoming album, Moments Bright or Rainy.
Backstage, while reviewing her lyrics with Assistant Liu, she spotted a familiar figure—a staff member in a cap and mask. But when she looked again, the person was gone.
She frowned, puzzled, but quickly returned to rehearsing.
During a break, she saw that same figure again. Just as she was about to take a closer look—
“Tiantian! I’m here!” a cheerful voice called out.
It was Liang Xirui, carrying her favorite orange juice.
“Hello, teachers! I’m Zhou Tian’s friend—just dropping by,” Liang Xirui greeted politely as her assistant brought in drinks.
“Teacher Xi Yiyun, would you like something to drink?”
“Juice is fine, thank you,” he replied with a faint smile.
“Tiantian, I heard your new song is amazing!” Liang Xirui beamed.
“Thanks for coming by—and bringing so much!” Zhou Tian smiled brightly.
“Well of course! Friends stick together!” Liang Xirui lifted her chin proudly.
“You’re coming back?” Zhou Tian asked in surprise.
“Yup! Next time, I’m bringing Wen Qingying too,” Liang Xirui said with a radiant smile.
—
That night, Zhou Tian returned to Emerald Villa Phase III. The lights were on; Wen Mingzhi was waiting, just like always.
“Tiantian, you’re home?” Wen Mingzhi stood up and walked over. She was still in her blouse.
“Yeah. Everything okay today?” Zhou Tian asked. Then she noticed it was past 9 p.m., and Wen Mingzhi still hadn’t changed.
“Fine,” Wen Mingzhi smiled faintly.
“What were you busy with? Why haven’t you washed up yet?”
“Just some work,” Wen Mingzhi said sweetly, her tone soft like she was being coquettish.
Seeing her act so innocent, Zhou Tian sighed. “President Wen, go wash up and rest. Don’t work so late.”
“Okay, Tiantian, got it.” Wen Mingzhi followed her up to the third floor.
She hadn’t really been working—just thinking. How should she tell Zhou Tian… about the baby?
“Tiantian… there’s something I need to tell you…”
