Chapter 7: Wen Mingzhi Came to Pick You Up Herself
After being discharged from the hospital, Zhou Tian and Xia Ruo had a simple meal together before heading their separate ways.
Once Zhou Tian got home, she went straight to sleep—and when she woke up, the sky had already turned dark.
Lying in the shadows of her dim room, Zhou Tian stretched her hand into the air, her eyes vacant as she recalled everything that had happened over the past few days.
Wen Mingzhi… she liked her even more now.
But someone like that—when it came to “liking”—Zhou Tian didn’t even rank.
In the silence of the night, a soft sigh full of unspoken yearning slipped from her lips. The sour ache of admiration seeped into her like the surrounding darkness, soaking her completely.
After a long while, she suddenly sat up like a flipping fish, got out of bed, turned on the lights, picked up her guitar, and began to strum it lightly, humming a melody.
“…”
For the next few days, Zhou Tian stayed home playing with her music. Only when immersed in music could she suppress the ache in her heart, even briefly forgetting about Wen Mingzhi.
But those quiet days didn’t last long. Director Li Aoyun called her and Sister Xia back to the company for a meeting.
The issue with the drugging incident hadn’t even been settled yet.
With anger still simmering, Xia Ruo stormed into the conference room with Zhou Tian.
Before they could even say anything, Li Aoyun preemptively struck: “You two usually act like no resource is good enough for you—turns out you’ve latched onto President Wen’s thigh.”
She scoffed, full of disdain.
“Director Li, that’s not true at all. Our relationship with President Wen is—” Sister Xia tried to explain, but the speech she had prepared flew right out of her mind.
“Wen Mingzhi of Qisheng Group—who would’ve thought Zhou Tian had such skills. You’re one of hers now, huh?”
“I have no relationship with President Wen!” Zhou Tian immediately retorted, her expression serious.
“Yes! They only met once by chance!” Xia Ruo quickly added.
“Quit playing dumb. President Cheng already explained everything clearly to me. He said you belong to President Wen!” Li Aoyun slammed a black folder onto the table.
At the mention of “President Cheng,” Zhou Tian and Xia Ruo’s faces instantly turned grim.
“Li Aoyun! Don’t go too far! If it weren’t for that President Cheng you arranged, none of this would’ve happened. Do you even realize we were drugged?!” Xia Ruo shouted, her face flushed with anger.
“If it hadn’t been for President Wen and Boss Xu stepping in to help, Zhou Tian and I might not even be standing here today!” she glared fiercely at Li Aoyun, who was still leisurely seated.
“Hmph, really got yourself a rich backer now, huh? No wonder you dare talk to me like this,” Li Aoyun sneered sideways at her.
“That’s not true!” Zhou Tian yelled back in frustration, her hand clenched tightly at her side. She absolutely hated hearing Wen Mingzhi’s name coming from Li Aoyun’s mouth.
It tainted her goddess.
Li Aoyun was briefly taken aback by Zhou Tian’s intensity.
“Director Li, that’s really not how it is,” Zhou Tian repeated earnestly.
“Say what you want. But President Cheng told me it was Wen Mingzhi who came and picked you up herself,” she said with a raised brow, mockery dripping from her voice. “Otherwise, why would you be so picky with resources, acting all high and mighty?”
Zhou Tian froze—Wen Mingzhi had come to pick her up herself?
“Director Li, Zhou Tian didn’t even have any resources! And the partners you introduced were all sleazy men looking to take advantage of us,” Xia Ruo shouted, her face red with rage.
They had endured so much in this company under Li Aoyun, constantly being pushed to their limits.
“Enough! Nothing happened in the end, right? You’re both standing here safe and sound. Just a misunderstanding. That so-called drugging? Please, you two were just drunk.” Li Aoyun waved her hand dismissively.
“And I hope President Wen sees it that way too. You get what I’m saying, right? All just a misunderstanding. Don’t go slandering President Cheng.” She walked over and patted Xia Ruo on the shoulder with a fake smile.
“To get ahead, to get resources, sometimes sacrifices must be made.” She smiled like she was giving sincere advice—but it only made them sick.
Zhou Tian and Xia Ruo were both too angry to even speak.
“Since you’ve bagged a sugar mama like Wen Mingzhi, make sure you cling tight, Zhou Tian. Who knows how long before she tosses you aside? I used to think you had some self-respect, but turns out you were just turning your nose up at my offers.”
She tilted her chin, full of scorn.
“Li Aoyun! You’ve gone too far!” Xia Ruo roared, unable to hold back any longer.
“Director Li, aren’t you afraid I’ll tell President Wen what you just said?” Zhou Tian took a deep breath, her chest heaving. But the smile on her face was calm, even laced with a hint of threat and defiance.
“Go ahead. Let’s see if Wen Mingzhi really likes you enough to pay the huge penalty fee for breaking your contract. Don’t forget, you still have nine years left on that contract.” She laughed arrogantly.
“Be smart. There are things you can say, and things you shouldn’t.” With that, Li Aoyun strutted away in her high heels.
“Damn it! We never should’ve signed such a long contract! Maybe we should just start raising money for the penalty fee!” Xia Ruo cursed at the departing figure.
“I’m sorry, Zhou Tian. I was the one who insisted you sign with this company… I had no idea it would turn out like this,” she said guiltily, lowering her head.
Back then, Xia Ruo had been young and full of passion, dreaming of success in the music world. When she met Zhou Tian and heard her voice, she was immediately drawn in and begged her to sign with the company.
Things started out okay, but within a month they realized all the promises—good treatment, career prospects—were nothing but empty words. But breaking the contract came with a hefty fine, and with no connections or resources, they were stuck, powerless.
“Don’t say that, Sister Xia. You’ve done so much for me. If it weren’t for you, I would’ve given up long ago. Signing the contract was my decision—it’s not your fault. The company and Li Aoyun are the ones in the wrong.” Zhou Tian consoled her gently.
She sighed deeply.
If Sister Xia hadn’t worked herself to the bone finding opportunities and drinking with clients, Zhou Tian might not have even been able to survive, let alone chase her dreams.
She was truly grateful. Xia Ruo never gave up on her.
Xia Ruo had previously managed two others—one bought out her contract and left, the other was shelved and eventually changed careers.
Only Zhou Tian was still struggling in the music world.
Now, she and Sister Xia had no path left but forward.
“It’s okay, Sister Xia. Maybe I’ll catch a break one day and earn enough to break the contract.”
“Right… oh! I almost forgot. A friend of mine mentioned an opening on a show yesterday—I already signed us up. Let’s see if we get selected.” Xia Ruo’s face lit up with sudden excitement.
“Really?” Zhou Tian’s eyes immediately sparkled.
“Oh, and about what Director Li said earlier—was it really Wen Mingzhi who came and rescued us that night?” Xia Ruo tapped Zhou Tian’s arm in disbelief.
“I’m not sure… maybe she just happened to be dining at the restaurant?” Zhou Tian guessed, though she couldn’t help smiling.
“Right! And since Boss Xu owns the restaurant, it makes sense they were dining together.” Xia Ruo nodded thoughtfully.
“Then we should definitely find a chance to properly thank her.”
Just then, Xia Ruo’s phone rang. She ran to a corner to answer it.
Zhou Tian’s smile slowly faded.
Now Li Aoyun was completely convinced she was Wen Mingzhi’s woman. But compared to having to accompany sleazy clients, endure drugs, and do shady deals—enduring Li Aoyun’s mocking and verbal abuse was still tolerable.
Still, she didn’t want to hear any slander about Wen Mingzhi. Her goddess wasn’t like that—Zhou Tian had seen it with her own eyes.
“Really?” Xia Ruo’s excited voice suddenly snapped Zhou Tian out of her thoughts.
“Great, thank you so much!”
She bowed on the spot, full of gratitude.
As soon as she hung up, before Zhou Tian could even ask, Xia Ruo shouted joyfully: “Amazing news! Zhou Tian, you got into the show! You know the super popular music show The Voice of Joy? You’ve been selected!”
“What!? Really?! That’s incredible! Thank you, Sister Xia!” Zhou Tian’s eyes crinkled as she smiled, brimming with joy.
“Yes! Now hurry and decide which song you want to perform.”
“Wait… can I sing any song? Do they cover the copyright fees?” Zhou Tian asked, looking troubled.
“Oh! I got too excited and forgot about that…” Xia Ruo paused, sobering up slightly.
Given their current situation, they couldn’t afford to buy any song rights.
And with this being their first real opportunity, if they tried to negotiate now, they might be kicked off the program in a second.
“No worries! Just sing one of your original songs. Who knows, maybe you’ll go viral!”
“Okay, then I’ll go with Cicadas, Summer Rain, and Dusk.” Zhou Tian decided immediately. It was her most popular original.
“Perfect! Let’s go with that.” They then began discussing the rest of the show details.
“…”
Meanwhile, in the top-floor office of Qisheng’s headquarters, Assistant Chen walked in and reported to Wen Mingzhi: “President Wen, Miss Zhou’s matter has been resolved.”
Wen Mingzhi stopped swiping through her tablet. “Good.”
“And about Cheng Jibo?”
Wen Mingzhi looked up and considered for a moment. “It’s just an empty shell of a company anyway. Let it disappear.”
“Understood, President Wen.” Assistant Chen nodded and left.
“…”
Elsewhere, an alpha who had previously been in contact with The Voice of Joy production team lit up when she heard the name Wen Mingzhi.
“All right. If she’s involved, I’m definitely joining this show.”
