Chapter 8: Because She Was Sent in by President Wen
In the blink of an eye, it was already the rehearsal day for the music show Yue Sheng. Over the past few days, Zhou Tian had been diligently practicing her song.
She and Sister Xia arrived at the venue early. Zhou Tian sat in the audience seats, watching everyone rehearse. From time to time, she respectfully stood up to greet the veteran singers and mentors. Meanwhile, Sister Xia busied herself chatting and networking with the producers, directors, and other staff members.
On stage, Liu Tao’s clear high notes rang out powerfully, earning a round of applause. His smooth transitions and flawless vocal control further showcased his singing prowess.
The smile on Zhou Tian’s face began to fade. Her hands clenched tightly in her lap as a deep sense of inferiority washed over her.
There was no way she could hit those kinds of high notes. Her key changes weren’t as clean, she couldn’t dance, she had fewer fans, and almost no name recognition. In every aspect, she was at a disadvantage… Going up on stage felt like she was just asking to embarrass herself.
She really had a long, long way to go.
“Wow, Teacher Liu’s high notes are amazing!” A voice beside her suddenly exclaimed in admiration.
“Right?” Zhou Tian turned and saw a tall and handsome alpha standing beside her. He looked familiar.
“Hi, I’m Lü Ningle,” she greeted brightly, extending her hand enthusiastically.
“Hello, I’m Zhou Tian,” Zhou Tian smiled and shook her hand, finally matching the face to the name.
Lü Ningle was a rising star in the industry, well-known for her versatility—singer, actor, dancer, composer… She was a frequent guest on variety shows, known for her cheerful and witty personality. She was very popular.
“So you’re Zhou Tian! I’ve listened to your songs before—I’ve heard so much about you.” Lü Ningle beamed as she sat down beside her.
Sure enough, just like she was on screen—warm and vibrant.
“Thank you, thank you…” Zhou Tian nodded shyly. “I’ve listened to a lot of your songs too—they’re really great.” She was rarely approached like this, especially at big events where she usually blended into the background. Let alone having someone say they’d heard her music.
A bright smile spread across Zhou Tian’s face. Her hands fidgeted slightly from excitement and nervousness.
“Thanks! What a coincidence, huh? Didn’t expect we’d be in the same episode.”
“Yeah, it’s fate,” Zhou Tian quickly agreed, happy to finally meet a peer in music she could talk to.
“Hi, are you two also here for the rehearsal?” someone suddenly asked, breaking the slightly awkward atmosphere.
“Yes,” Zhou Tian nodded quickly.
“Have you already rehearsed?” Wen Qingying crouched down a little so she was at eye level with them.
“No, not yet. There are still a few mentors ahead of us,” Lü Ningle replied.
“That’s a relief. I thought I was late!” Wen Qingying let out a huge breath of relief. “Thank you, thank you!” She stood up and sat beside Lü Ningle.
“Hi, I’m Wen Qingying.” She turned slightly toward them, waving and flashing a sweet smile.
“Nice to meet you! I’ve heard your new song—it’s super popular right now,” Lü Ningle said warmly.
“Yeah, it’s really good. The lyrics are beautiful!” Zhou Tian quickly added, remembering the song. As expected, this Omega was just as sweet and charming as her music.
“Thank you, thank you… You two are too kind,” Wen Qingying replied modestly.
“And you are…?” Wen Qingying looked apologetically at Zhou Tian. “Sorry, I’m terrible with faces—I don’t recognize many people.”
“I’m Zhou Tian,” she said with a polite smile. She wasn’t famous, and her work didn’t have much traction—of course it was normal not to recognize her.
She was already used to it.
Wen Qingying nodded, clearly still trying to place the name, but obviously unfamiliar.
Zhou Tian smiled lightly. “Just call me Zhou Tian, no need to be so formal.”
“Alright, then you two can just call me Qingying too. I don’t do many of these shows, so I’m still not too clear on how things work,” Wen Qingying explained.
“It’s all pretty similar,” Lü Ningle began explaining the show’s structure, the mentors, and the newer generation of popular singers. “I’ve just done a lot of variety shows, so I know a bit more.”
Zhou Tian and Wen Qingying listened attentively, nodding along.
“That person just on stage was Mentor Liu Taoran. Didn’t expect her to come to rehearsal too, even though she’s such a big name and has such a polished stage presence.”
“And the one on stage now is Xi Yiyun—she’s also a mentor, and the champion from last season. Her latest song—you guys must’ve heard it—it’s amazing!”
“I also heard that Bai Qianxue will make a surprise appearance as a guest mentor. I wonder if we’ll get to meet her? I’m so excited—that’s Bai Qianxue!” Lü Ningle practically squealed with excitement.
“No way!? Bai Qianxue’s going to be here?” Zhou Tian looked stunned.
At only 26, Bai Qianxue had already composed countless hits, won major national awards, and recently received the international FTY Music Award. She was hailed as the next Queen of Pop—and one of Zhou Tian’s idols.
“Wow~ So many powerhouses here! I’m so looking forward to this~” Wen Qingying clasped her hands in excitement.
“I think you’re up next, Zhou Tian,” Lü Ningle reminded her.
“Ah? I’m next?” Zhou Tian froze, instinctively searching the crowd for Sister Xia.
Sure enough, Sister Xia stood front and center, raising her hand high and waving to her.
“Alright, I’ll go get ready now.” Zhou Tian smiled as she got up.
“Go for it!” Lü Ningle encouraged.
“Good luck!” added Wen Qingying.
With companions now at her side, Zhou Tian felt a little more confident and not quite as anxious—but she still couldn’t shake her nerves completely.
“Tiantian, you’ve got this! Relax. If there’s anything wrong with the in-ear monitor, mic levels, or stage lights, just speak up. Everyone here is nice and easy to work with—don’t be scared.” Sister Xia spoke gently as she handed her a bottle of water. She had just worked the room, talking with every department of the production team, and surprisingly, things had gone smoothly.
“Okay, Sister Xia.” Zhou Tian took a deep breath and walked onstage with her guitar.
She had prepared a lot for this performance. The song she was about to sing was her first original piece. When it was first released, it had gained a bit of traction, but then quickly faded away.
Zhou Tian had thought she wouldn’t get nervous, but standing under the spotlight on the big stage again, her throat tightened.
Cough, cough… She cleared her throat, and her hand holding the guitar pick started to tremble.
The melody began to play. She missed the first beat by half a second before her fingers finally moved and strummed the strings.
She stood in the spotlight, clutching her guitar. As the intro ended, she forced herself into the rhythm and started to sing.
Down below, Sister Xia was holding her breath. Zhou Tian was visibly nervous. Her hands were still shaking, and her guitar strumming was a mess.
The beginning was shaky and uneven. Her voice was off at first, but slowly, she began to stabilize. Her tone opened up, and the key change came out beautifully.
But just as she finished the first half, the backing track stopped.
“Let’s run it again. Don’t worry. How’s the audio? Is the in-ear okay?” the assistant director asked gently.
“…Thank you. Can I get the in-ear monitor a little louder, please?” Zhou Tian snapped out of her daze and responded, bowing respectfully. Only now did her trembling hands start to steady.
“Thank you so much!” Sister Xia also bowed quickly. “Tiantian, it’s okay! You’ve got this—don’t be nervous!” She stepped up to the stage and gave Zhou Tian’s hand a supportive squeeze.
Down in the seats, her two new friends waved at her, mouthing “Don’t be nervous” and “You can do it!”
Zhou Tian smiled and waved back. This was her rare opportunity—she couldn’t let Sister Xia down, and she couldn’t let her music down either. This had been her dream for years.
“I’m ready now, teacher,” Zhou Tian said after taking a sip of water. She cleared her throat again and returned to the center of the stage.
The music started again. Zhou Tian counted the beat, strummed her guitar, and hit the right notes. She did well this time, though anyone experienced would notice her guitar rhythm was still a bit off.
The song ended. Zhou Tian instinctively let out a breath of relief. She finally looked relaxed.
“Director, can I do one more take?” she asked politely, bowing slightly.
“Sure, let’s go again,” the team responded without hesitation.
This time, everything went smoothly. Zhou Tian gave a solid performance. As she ended the song, she bowed deeply and said, “Thank you, teachers.”
She quickly came down from the stage, returned her earpiece to the staff, and smiled brightly—completely glowing.
But a few low whispers brought her smile to an abrupt halt.
“That’s it? And she got to sing three times?”
“Exactly. Even the director was being extra patient—must be because she’s Wen Zong’s person.”
“You mean Wen Mingzhi from Qisheng? Ohhh, that explains it…”
“…”
The moment they noticed Zhou Tian approaching, the speakers went silent. But she had already heard them.
Wen Mingzhi sent her in?
So that’s why… That explains everything!?
