- Chapter 8 - Questioning the Heart
Would he want her to have only him by her side?
Ying Buran: “……”
She shook her head, a mix of amusement and disbelief in her voice. “That’s impossible. You’re overthinking things.”
Cheng Banxia first glanced around, then beckoned her closer with a mischievous grin. “Hey, it’s hard not to overthink! Think about it: a high-and-mighty ice queen suddenly shows warmth to just one person, right?”
Ying Buran: “?”
She didn’t understand.
Seeing her confused expression, Cheng Banxia checked to make sure her Senior Sister wasn’t around. When the coast was clear, she slipped a book into Ying Buran’s hands, her smile widening. “Read this when you’re alone. You’ll understand then.”
Ying Buran, caught up in Cheng Banxia’s nervous energy, quickly concealed the book and stole a glance at the title:
After My Fake Death, the Ice Queen Went Mad for Me
What a… strange title? she thought. I’ve never seen anything like it before. What kind of book is this? A memoir? A Dao Technique manual?
“Keep this absolutely safe and hidden—don’t let anyone else see it, got it?” Cheng Banxia whispered urgently, wiggling her eyebrows.
Ying Buran nodded solemnly, storing the book in her Storage Ring. She planned to read it later that night, after Zhao Qingxun had gone to bed.
As night fell, Ying Buran bid farewell to Zhao Qingxun and burrowed under her quilt, pulling it over her head. Using a luminous pearl for light, she carefully opened the book and began to read.
She didn’t sleep a wink that night, leaving her dazed and disoriented during her morning exercises.
“Are you feeling unwell today?” A hand suddenly pressed against her forehead. Ying Buran startled, turning to see Zhao Qingxun’s concerned gaze.
“Did you overexert yourself yesterday? Maybe you should rest today,” Zhao Qingxun said anxiously.
Ying Buran hastily shook her head, averting her eyes with a guilty air. “No, no, I just didn’t sleep well. It won’t affect anything.”
Now, every time she saw Zhao Qingxun, the plot of the book flashed through her mind.
It’s actually happening… So, is this really how it is? Ying Buran cautiously glanced at Zhao Qingxun, deciding to observe for a while longer.
And there was another question: what were her feelings for Zhao Qingxun? Was it mere gratitude for saving her life, simple camaraderie between fellow disciples, or something more?
She didn’t know. This was uncharted territory for her.
Asking Zhao Qingxun was out of the question. Ying Buran decided to wait until she saw Cheng Banxia again to ask her. Little did she know that Zhao Qingxun simply thought she was tired and distracted.
“Go back and rest,” Zhao Qingxun said. “We’ll pause Body Refinement for today.”
Ying Buran let out a surprised “Ah!” and quickly waved her hands to reassure her. “I’m fine! I can keep going.”
“Cultivation requires balance,” Zhao Qingxun explained. “When I massaged you yesterday, I also checked your physical condition. Your foundation is weaker than most, so you need to start gradually. We’ll resume Body Refinement tomorrow. For now, go rest and then meditate to practice the Senluo Art.”
In this matter, Zhao Qingxun clearly held absolute authority, so Ying Buran didn’t argue and obediently went to rest.
After that, their training alternated between Body Refinement and meditation. Over time, Ying Buran felt her physical strength noticeably increase, and her spiritual energy began to accumulate.
Of course, she hadn’t forgotten about her question.
When asked, Cheng Banxia became incredibly excited, pulling Ying Buran aside for a detailed “lesson” and even assigning “homework” to help her determine her true feelings for Zhao Qingxun.
Would I feel uncomfortable seeing her standing with someone else?
I’ve never met a fourth person, so I don’t know.
Do you want to be with her every moment?—Absolutely. If she didn’t see Zhao Qingxun for more than a day, she couldn’t help but worry.
Do you want to share everything you have with her?—Yes. Every time she made a new discovery or achieved something, she would share it with Zhao Qingxun, who would celebrate with her.
Are you attached to her?—Yes. Everything she had now was thanks to Zhao Qingxun. Without Zhao Qingxun, she wouldn’t be who she was today.
Do you want her to have only you by her side?
Ying Buran stopped writing and pondered deeply.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that this desire was somewhat dark. Could someone truly have only one person by their side? Wouldn’t that be too possessive?
“Possessiveness! That’s a crucial sign!” Cheng Banxia slammed her hand on the table, her voice ringing with excitement. “Think about it—if it were someone completely unrelated to you, would you want her to have only you by her side?”
Ying Buran considered this and agreed, “No, I wouldn’t.”
Cheng Banxia nodded approvingly, eagerly anticipating Ying Buran’s next words. “So, you see? So… do you want that?”
Ying Buran fell silent again. Did she want that?
Seeing Ying Buran’s lack of response, Cheng Banxia rephrased the question: “Would you want Senior Sister to have someone else who receives the same treatment as you?”
“…I think… I might not want to…”
Cheng Banxia clapped her hands sharply. “That settles it! The answer is clear: you have feelings for Senior Sister that go beyond friendship. You just haven’t explored this side of yourself before. Plus, you’re probably used to your current dynamic, which is why you didn’t realize it. That’s all it is.”
“What’s that saying? ‘The observer sees more than the player.'”
So that’s it? Ying Buran clapped her hands in sudden understanding. “So, what should I do next?”
“Next, you should consider Senior Sister’s feelings. Or rather, do you want to be with her?” Cheng Banxia stroked her chin, turning the question back on Ying Buran.
Ying Buran recalled the parts of the book about “being together” and hesitated.
Seeing her expression, Cheng Banxia slapped her forehead in regret, remembering the book she had given her.
Some of the “being together” parts in that book… well, the endings weren’t exactly happy. She hadn’t expected this to backfire.
“Actually, those parts in the book are just a small minority,” Cheng Banxia explained. “Most people who get together live peacefully and happily ever after. Once you’re together, your relationship becomes the closest bond imaginable, second only to bl00d ties.”
After understanding the situation, Ying Buran felt even more hesitant. The gap between them was too vast: one was a favored child of heaven, while the other needed help just to enter the Immortal Sect.
If not for being rescued, she would have become just another nameless skeleton by the roadside.
She truly wasn’t worthy.
When Cheng Banxia learned of her thoughts, she fell silent for a moment before saying, “I don’t know what Senior Sister thinks, but for me, I don’t care about someone’s background or status when it comes to a partner.”
“Even if there’s a huge gap between you, what does it matter as long as you truly love each other? Background and status aren’t everything. In the Cultivation World, opportunity and effort are just as important.”
“I was originally just a child from an ordinary mortal family. I didn’t have the monstrous talent Senior Sister possesses. When I first entered the sect, my talent was only considered average at best. But now, I’ve left those who once surpassed me far behind.”
At this point, Cheng Banxia scratched her head and said earnestly, “I believe your future achievements will be remarkable. I’ve seen you cultivate, and your progress is the fastest I’ve ever witnessed. And do you know how difficult Senior Sister’s Immortal Slaying Sword Technique is to learn? Many people can’t even grasp the basics after five years, yet you’ve already formed the rudimentary shape of the first stance. And it’s only been how long?”
With that, Cheng Banxia patted Ying Buran’s shoulder and said, “Don’t underestimate yourself. You’re incredibly talented too. If you truly want to pursue this, then go for it.”
“I’ll help you with Senior Sister as well. She clearly treats you differently from others. Even if you can’t see it, I can sense it—she cares deeply about you.”
