After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Breaking the Mirror
The chandelier overhead shimmered like a slowly flowing river of light, brilliant as a galaxy. Hypnotic electronic drumbeats stirred the soul, setting off waves of restless heat.
“This drink is in celebration of our dear President Gu landing the military’s big contract!” In a luxurious private lounge, a glamorously dressed female Alpha raised her glass with a smile. “It only took a year to build Shizi Star’s business to this level—truly a king’s return!”
With her words, the others joined in, raising their glasses and turning their eyes toward the young woman seated at the main seat.
Gu Jinxiao had already had quite a bit to drink tonight. The heat from the alcohol had flushed her delicate cheeks, giving her complexion the glossy sheen of porcelain glaze. Her eyes shimmered with moisture as she smiled and shook her head. “…I really can’t drink anymore.”
Her tall and lithe frame clearly marked her as an Alpha as well, but her face was astonishingly beautiful. As she spoke, she casually loosened the collar of her shirt, revealing a sliver of snow-white neck, radiant and fair—so striking it made the Omegas seated nearby appear dim in comparison.
“Drink! You have to drink!” another friend chimed in. “It’s a double celebration, after all—not only are you back in Capital Star in glory with a major deal, but… I seem to remember, aren’t you about to be single again?”
That comment made Gu Jinxiao’s expression freeze slightly. She paused for a moment before curling her red lips. “You’re right. Next month.”
“I knew it!” the Alpha burst into laughter. “You and that Miss Chi from the Chi family… it’s good to end it smoothly. Honestly, my sister and a bunch of her Omega friends have been pestering me about your return. Jinxiao, once you’re divorced, you owe us a treat!”
Gu Jinxiao smiled gracefully. “Of course.”
In fact, her marriage to Chi Yuejing should have ended a year ago. But due to a continual drop in the interstellar marriage rate in recent years, the Federation had passed a law requiring a mandatory 12-month consideration period after filing for divorce before it could be legally granted.
This business alliance-turned-marriage had been a rare setback in her otherwise smooth life. Fortunately, the end was finally in sight. Gu Jinxiao tilted her head back and downed her glass in one gulp, exhaling in quiet relief.
As the night deepened, the atmosphere in the lounge grew even more lively. An Omega girl who had been sitting beside Gu Jinxiao all evening looked up at her expectantly and asked shyly, “President Gu… would you like to take me home tonight?”
The lighting cast a soft glow across the girl’s curled eyelashes. She was one of the most outstanding Omegas present—gentle-looking and sweet, like a pitiful little deer. As she spoke, she blinked those big eyes and lightly rested her head on Gu Jinxiao’s shoulder.
She had taken a liking to the guest of honor the moment she saw her. Rumor had it Gu Jinxiao was not only rich, but a stunner as well. Throughout the evening’s socializing, Gu Jinxiao had been the perfect gentleman—her hand politely placed at the girl’s waist and never once crossing any lines. That restraint only increased the Omega’s affection.
She bit her lip shyly and released a faint hint of her pheromones.
Her scent was citrus—sweet and just slightly unripe. Many had described it as the smell of first love, a very appealing aroma.
Sure enough, the hand resting at her waist paused slightly at the same moment the scent reached Gu Jinxiao’s nose.
Gu Jinxiao looked down, meeting the Omega’s misty eyes. She understood the implication—it was a silent invitation. But that familiar citrus fragrance lingered in her senses and unexpectedly stirred a faint resistance in her heart. Still smiling, she began thinking of a way to decline without embarrassing the girl.
Before she could find the right words, the music cut off abruptly.
At the same time, everyone’s electronic devices began to beep loudly and continuously.
Alert Notice: Half an hour ago, a Zerg ship signal was intercepted at the outer city’s air defense outpost. Suspected Zerg incursion. A city-wide curfew will now be enforced. Repeat, curfew enforcement begins immediately.
The curfew order saved Gu Jinxiao in the nick of time. She offered the Omega girl an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, looks like I need to leave now.”
Before the girl could say anything more, she had already stood up and called for the server to settle the bill.
Curfew enforcement was mandatory. Within an hour of notification, all citizens were required to return home or head to the nearest shelter. Gu Jinxiao’s residence was in the inner city. After bidding her friends goodbye, she drove away from the club.
The streets were nearly empty. Her hover car slid silently along the track. Outside the window, familiar flower walls streaked past—bougainvillea roses in full bloom. It seemed that even during her year-long absence from Capital Star, the inner city hadn’t changed its landscaping.
The flowers remained the same. But the people were no longer who they were.
The hover car pulled up in front of a white villa. Gu Jinxiao got out. She had just reached for the fingerprint scanner when a faint whooshing noise caught her ear. Her Alpha instincts kicked in at the last second—she dodged just in time.
Before she could react further, a massive force slammed her from behind. Something cold and hard pressed against her waist—likely a knife. That damp, bl00d-slick Zerg stench enveloped her in an instant.
Zerg… in the inner city? Impossible.
A surge of danger crashed over her. Gu Jinxiao forced herself to remain calm. “Don’t be impulsive. I’ve got cash and anonymous electronic cards in my wallet. You can take all of it.”
“You think I’m just a mugger?” The Zerg seemed to chuckle. “I don’t want money. Get in the car. Drive me out of the city.”
That request snapped everything into place. This creature might be the very target of tonight’s curfew.
But before she could process it fully, the blade at her back began to slide up along her spine—soon nearing the sensitive gland at the base of her neck. Death loomed close. She closed her eyes, steeling herself. “Fine. I’ll take you.”
The Zerg forced her toward the car. A chitin-covered hand grabbed her wrist and dragged it to the fingerprint scanner.
Gu Jinxiao held her breath, raised her hand, and gently placed her fingertip against the screen. With a soft “ding,” the car unlocked.
Now!
In the instant the door opened and the Zerg’s focus loosened, she dropped low, launched herself forward, and sprinted in the opposite direction—
But a flash of silver intercepted her. A hard, armored hand grabbed her waist and slammed her down against the hood.
Bang!
The impact nearly crushed her organs. Pain tore through her chest like drowning. Then, a monstrous Zerg face appeared above her—gray-blue skin stretched over almost-human features, contorted in rage.
“You tried to run?” it hissed. Her resistance had clearly enraged it.
The blade rose again. Wind whistled. Gu Jinxiao’s bl00d froze. She clenched her teeth, struggling with all her might—but it was no use. She couldn’t even shake the Zerg.
The blade plunged toward her chest.
Gu Jinxiao’s eyelashes trembled. She instinctively shut her eyes.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
The sharp blasts of a particle gun ripped through the night.
The pain never came.
Instead, a cold, sticky liquid splattered her face. Zerg bl00d—thick and foul—dripped onto her skin. Whatever had been pinning her down crumpled.
She gasped for air, limbs shaking, trying to sit up—but her legs buckled, and she fell from the hood.
A figure emerged from the shadows near the flower wall. Under the hazy moonlight, she could only make out the crisp silhouette of a tall figure in a black Federation military uniform. A gold brooch on the chest gleamed faintly. Long legs wrapped in polished leather boots strode closer.
“Thank you… for saving me…” Gu Jinxiao murmured, still trembling. She gripped the car’s wheel, trying to stand.
The figure chuckled softly, paused for a moment, then stepped forward and held out a gloved hand.
Gu Jinxiao didn’t care about Alpha pride anymore. Zerg encounters left trauma ingrained in every human. She reached for the hand—only to freeze completely the moment she looked up.
That face—delicately featured, distinctly Eastern. Long eyes with a lazy upward tilt. Thin lips curled in a faint smile. Cool, familiar detachment in her gaze.
“Chi… Chi Yuejing?” Gu Jinxiao stiffened. Holding that hand suddenly felt like clutching a live grenade.
But Chi Yuejing remained calm. She gave her a slight tug, helping her to her feet, then calmly reached out again, curling a gloved finger.
The gesture felt like the devil summoning a soul. Gu Jinxiao instinctively stepped back, wary. “You… what are you doing?”
Chi Yuejing’s lips lifted into a faint curve. “Night patrol for the Central Surveillance Bureau. Please show your citizen ID card.”
Though her words were by the book, the tone clearly carried a teasing lilt. Gu Jinxiao was still reeling from the shock of their reunion and blurted out, “The Central Surveillance Bureau…? But you—weren’t you supposed to be serving with the Far Star Fleet?”
The woman said nothing more. Instead, she took a decisive step forward, trapping Gu Jinxiao between herself and the car. Her eyes slid from the confusion on Gu Jinxiao’s face… down, without hesitation, to that slightly open collar.
