After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Fever
The starship cruised steadily through space, the ambient lights on the cabin walls flickering softly like the tranquil, serene night sky outside.
Yet Gu Jinxi didn’t feel calm at all, because something was clearly off about the person pressing down on her.
In her memory, Chi Yuejing had always been proud and aloof—and that trait had only intensified after becoming an Alpha. Her black Federal military uniform was always impeccably worn, radiating a cold, ascetic aura. But now, her expression was far from composed. There was a trace of restlessness to it, her long, graceful peach blossom eyes slightly narrowed, and the corners reddened.
Her hand rested on Gu Jinxi’s shoulder, and the heat of her palm seeped through the fabric of her shirt, penetrating straight into her skin and making her bl00d boil. Gu Jinxi’s heartbeat began to race, and she shifted under the pressure with some effort, laughing, “Hey, don’t tell me you’re this easy to tease?”
Thinking about it again, it wasn’t all that surprising. After all, Chi Yuejing had undergone a transition from Omega to Alpha. Given her proud personality, she probably hated jokes about it. With that in mind, Gu Jinxi’s smile softened into sincerity. “Sorry. I was only trying to joke around just now. I didn’t consider your feelings. I apologize.”
This idiot still had no idea why she was upset.
Chi Yuejing bit down gently, her eyes rippling with emotion. She knew she was blowing things out of proportion. When she saw Gu Jinxi surrounded by a group of Omegas in the lounge earlier, it had taken every ounce of her self-control not to pull her back into her arms.
She used to say she wasn’t comfortable getting too close to Omegas… Her lips pressed into a tighter line, her throat suddenly dry. A strange realization dawned—her body was changing.
As Chi Yuejing’s expression grew darker, Gu Jinxi finally realized that something was going dangerously wrong. She reached out, placing a hand against her forehead—and immediately flinched. “…You’re burning up!”
A high fever in an Alpha only meant one thing. Not to mention the increasingly thick scent of white iris flooding the air. Gu Jinxi’s heart pounded as she tried to push her away, only for her wrist to be firmly grasped.
“Don’t move.”
Chi Yuejing’s voice was hoarse, as if suppressing something painful. “Just… don’t move.”
They were both Alphas. Some things didn’t need to be said to be understood. Gu Jinxi realized she must be entering her susceptibility period—Alpha susceptibility typically occurred every three to six months, accompanied by high fever, an information pheromone surge, and hypersensitivity of mental energy. Rest and calm were crucial.
“I brought suppressants,” Gu Jinxi said, her voice small and slightly panicked. “They’re in the suitcase over there…”
The hand holding her tightened briefly—then loosened with a conscious effort, as if Chi Yuejing feared hurting her. She took a few shaky breaths, and after a moment finally responded, “Okay.”
She struggled to sit up, slumping weakly onto the other side of the sofa. Her face was flushed, her eyes hazy. She let herself flop down against the sofa back, losing her usual composed bearing.
She looks… so pitiful.
Gu Jinxi stopped in her tracks. She hesitated, looking down at the suppressant she’d just taken out, then asked, stammering slightly, “Do you… need my help?”
She didn’t realize just how much that ambiguous question would shake the person on the sofa. Chi Yuejing narrowed her eyes, her gaze blazing like burning stars. The heat in her eyes made Gu Jinxi’s heart stutter, and she almost dropped the suppressant from her hands.
But in the end, she couldn’t bring herself to just walk away.
The suppressant was a strong type—Gu Jinxi had been regularly injecting them ever since her differentiation, since she was mildly allergic to most Omega pheromones. Though her own susceptibility period wasn’t due for another half month, she’d brought one along just in case.
Who’d have thought it’d end up being used on someone else?
She removed the injector from its packaging, nervously approaching the woman on the sofa. “Turn your head a little,” she murmured. “And please—don’t attack me…”
Suppressants were injected near the gland at the back of the neck, a highly sensitive spot for Alphas, and any sudden movement could trigger a defensive response. Gu Jinxi was extremely cautious.
With her words, Chi Yuejing straightened up slowly, bowing her head obediently like a dangerous but subdued predator.
Her collar had already been unfastened. Her neck was exposed and flushed. Gu Jinxi’s face flushed scarlet at the sight. She held her breath and carefully pressed the injector to her skin.
Beep—
The button-like injector pierced her skin. Just as Gu Jinxi was about to breathe a sigh of relief, she was suddenly pulled into a tight embrace.
Chi Yuejing’s scalding face pressed against her waist, so hot it nearly made her lose her balance. At the same time, she heard her raspy voice:
“Thank you.”
Hearing that weak voice, Gu Jinxi’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t struggle, letting her hold on for a while. When she figured the suppressant had probably started to take effect, she softly asked, “Do you need to request time off?”
Even though Alpha susceptibility wasn’t as intense as Omega heat, it could still cause fevers, headaches, and other symptoms—especially for high-grade Alphas, who were even more affected.
Chi Yuejing, eyes closed, her lashes trembling slightly, answered, “No need.”
The flush on her face had faded a bit, though her exhaustion was still clear. She raised a hand to rub her furrowed brows, then explained, “The Inquiry Division will be participating in this team-building trip too. Knowing Ados’ personality, he’ll be watching closely for any missteps from us, so taking time off is not an option.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep my condition under control.” Her voice was unusually gentle, tinged with faint regret. “Jinxi, I will do everything I can to protect you, so please—just trust me. Just stay by my side.”
A loose strand of hair fell across her forehead, softening the sharp lines of her face. The starlight outside the window spilled over her features, highlighting her striking beauty.
Gu Jinxi’s heart tightened. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
“…Okay,” she heard herself say after a long pause. “I’ll trust you.”
“…”
The flight to Rose Satellite II took two hours. After landing, cars were already waiting to drive them to the resort area outside the city. As the vehicle left the central zone, the scenery opened up—tall palm trees appeared on the horizon, and something sparkling danced in the air. Gu Jinxi looked closer—bubbles.
Countless light, translucent bubbles drifted with the breeze—this was the planet’s famous “Bubble Palm Grove” phenomenon. These trees had been imported at great cost from off-world. During sunset, they underwent a respiratory reaction that produced soap-like bubbles, which shimmered in the twilight with breathtaking beauty.
It really was a perfect vacation planet.
The logistics team had arrived earlier and reserved the entire western side of the resort. Tents of various sizes dotted the beach, and a bonfire platform was being finalized in the distance.
Just as Chi Yuejing had predicted, the moment they reached the beach, Gu Jinxi spotted zone markers dividing the camping area, and not far from the Central Surveillance Unit’s sector was a clearly labeled area: Inquiry Division.
“How annoying. We got assigned the same section as them this year?” Xia Wanwan noticed the sign too and pouted. “The Inquiry Division’s always been at odds with us. Who the heck arranged this layout…”
Gu Jinxi pursed her lips, a suspicion flickering through her mind. She didn’t say anything, just quietly followed the group to the outdoor dining area.
The banquet tables, built from raw wood, were covered with an array of food. For safety, Alphas and Omegas were separated into different seating zones several meters apart. Whether by mistake or design, Gu Jinxi found herself placed at the Omega spouses’ table.
Fortunately, the ladies were warm and welcoming. One Omega waved at her cheerfully, “Miss Gu, come sit with us! Xiaofei’s cooking is amazing—you have to try her grilled moon-shell clams!”
The shell was nearly as big as a hand, and the garlic-buttered clam meat looked irresistibly delicious. Gu Jinxi had been about to decline politely, but when faced with such tempting food, she couldn’t resist and nodded. “Then I’ll impose.”
What she didn’t expect, however, was that this culinary detour would lead her to relearn just how colorful and harmonious AO relationships could be.
As the wine and food flowed, the typically gentle and reserved Omegas began to relax—and their conversation topics grew… increasingly unfiltered.
“Of course I packed my swimsuit. I even brought a very special set of pajamas—going to surprise my partner tonight…”
“Can’t believe we’re sleeping in tents this year. Wonder if the soundproofing’s any good…”
Gu Jinxi quietly tightened her grip on her wine glass.
Forgive me— she thought. I really thought being a polite, agreeable family member wouldn’t be that hard. Who knew they’d be talking about things this… spicy?
She really should have insisted on taking leave.
