After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 12
Chapter 12: Battles
When Gu Jinxi rushed over after hearing the news, a crowd had already gathered on the beach, gossiping eagerly.
She couldn’t see what was happening inside and was just about to squeeze through the people when someone patted her shoulder.
Chi Yuejing appeared behind her. At some point, she had changed into a pearl-white long-sleeved rash guard that hugged her figure, accentuating the elegant and slender build of a female Alpha. Paired with those gently arched brows and soft, alluring peach blossom eyes, she looked like a finely honed blade shimmering with restrained light — full of grace and vitality.
“Hold this for me for now,” she said, handing Gu Jinxi something — the golden brooch she almost never took off.
Gu Jinxi took the brooch and asked in a low voice, “What’s going on? I heard you’re doing some kind of water-flight shooting match? Didn’t we agree… to pick a land-based event?”
They had discussed it that morning — with Chi Yuejing’s current physical condition, to avoid any accidents, she was supposed to choose lower-risk land-based activities for the team-building competition. Why had things suddenly changed just when Gu Jinxi stepped away to buy coffee?
“Sorry I didn’t consult you first,” her voice was unexpectedly soft as she explained, “but someone issued a challenge. I can’t just let him down, can I?”
Her gaze drifted into the distance, carrying a faint chill, but in just a blink, she retracted it — as if the moment of coldness had been nothing more than an illusion.
Gu Jinxi was about to say more, but several officers from the Central Surveillance Bureau arrived just then. The young man leading the group was visibly excited: “Colonel Chi, well said! Beat those hounds from the Inquiry Department until they’re running with their tails between their legs!”
“That guy surnamed Zeng was over there barking nonsense just now, telling everyone to bet on him… What a loudmouth!”
Her opponent was from the Inquiry Department?
Gu Jinxi frowned slightly at that and instinctively turned to look at Chi Yuejing. The latter was gazing back at her gently, her eyes full of laughter.
“Wife, everyone’s cheering me on,” she said with a squint-eyed smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll definitely win.”
With everyone watching, there was no way to question how deliberate that “wife” sounded. Gu Jinxi’s cheeks flushed with heat, and she simply tightened her grip on the brooch in her hand and said softly, “Then be careful.”
She didn’t believe for a second this match was a coincidence. But since Chi Yuejing insisted, Gu Jinxi chose to uphold her promise — to trust her.
In the water-flight shooting event, participants wore water jet packs to race across the sea surface while using an atom blaster to shoot flying targets launched into the air for points. After completing the course, the one with the shortest time and highest score would win.
Because the event demanded both precision and athletic skill, it carried a high score value and drew a large audience.
On the speedboats at the pier, both teams of competitors were already suited up. Chi Yuejing put on waterproof goggles and turned her head to glance at her opponent.
The Alpha wore a black sharkskin diving suit and had the same arrogant look on his face. Seeing her glance his way, he raised two fingers, made a cutting motion across his neck, and grinned provocatively.
“Colonel Chi, there’s still time to surrender,” he said in a low voice. “You’re just a woman — if you take a bad fall out there, it won’t be pretty.”
Chi Yuejing ignored the provocation and simply smirked. “About eleven o’clock on shore — that lady in the blue dress looks like Chairwoman Melissa from the Anti-Discrimination and Ethics Committee. Want me to loan you a loudspeaker so you can repeat that last line?”
The Alpha was momentarily stunned before scoffing in disdain. “Women, always playing these tricks… Remember my name — Zeng Jiyuan. You snatched an opportunity from me once. Today, I’ll take it back with my own hands.”
With that, he snapped his gear into place, turned, and leaped into the sea without a backward glance, sending up a large splash.
Zeng Jiyuan?
She’d never even heard of him.
Chi Yuejing continued checking her equipment calmly. The real reason she accepted the match was because this arrogant provocateur was clearly the one who had been snooping outside their tent the previous night. At first, she thought he was just trying to get revenge for the water-pitcher incident — but judging by his tone, their grudge might go back even further than she imagined.
The referee blew the starting whistle, and she stopped overthinking. Activating her gear, she leapt gracefully into the sea.
The competition officially began.
With the roar of engines, two speedboats sliced through the waves like fish darting toward the open sea. Behind the giant spray of white water, two figures — one in black, one in white — emerged almost simultaneously.
The water jet propulsion system was a compact device powered by cyclical dynamics. The contestants stood on a surfboard-like platform, and upon hitting the wave zone, the device would shoot out columns of water nearly three meters high to lift them into the air — making them appear as if they were flying over the sea.
It was high tide. The blue sea surged, piling into massive waves. The speedboats buzzed forward like arrows, piercing the wave walls. The crashing waves boomed around them with heart-pounding intensity. Racing through the wave peaks, they looked like they could be swallowed up at any second.
“She’s out—!”
With a cheer from the crowd, a white silhouette burst through a wall of waves. The water jets shot her high into the air. Her posture was elegant and controlled, balanced perfectly atop the crest of a wave. That seemingly effortless pose actually required extraordinary core strength. As soon as she stabilized, she drew the atom blaster from her waist.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three crisp shots rang out, and three colored discs flying above the sea shattered and fell. Just as she fired, a black figure came speeding in from the other side, also taking aim and firing rapidly.
The first round of shooting ended quickly. Without time to tally the scores, both speedboats pressed on, the two contestants adjusting their trajectories and surging toward the next wave crest.
“Incredible speed!” someone in the viewing area closest to the pier gasped. They were a fellow Alpha from the Central Surveillance Bureau. “You have to precisely time the launch, judge the position of the moving targets — it’s insanely difficult!”
They weren’t the only ones amazed. In this kind of high-intensity surf flight, physical stamina rapidly drained. The competitors had to maintain speed while concentrating on targeting — a brutal test of both physical endurance and mental acuity.
Midway through the race, the electronic scoreboard showed a neck-and-neck contest. The two had nearly identical times, but Chi Yuejing held a slim lead in shooting points — ahead by just three.
Gu Jinxi stared anxiously at the sea. No one else knew that just an hour ago, this Alpha had injected a strong suppressant. The medication would cause her stamina to deplete even faster than usual — not to mention the immense strain the event placed on her mental fortitude…
Yet even under such circumstances, she was still managing to hold the lead.
The match on the water heated up. The two racers hurtled toward a particularly massive wave — at least ten meters high. The roaring tide thundered toward them like a giant’s chest. Within seconds…
The audience collectively held their breath, eyes locked on the water, afraid to blink.
A streak of white shot skyward like a comet bursting through the tide. The crystalline spray surrounded her like a halo. She looked like a mermaid soaring above the sea. Then suddenly, she arched backward — body nearly parallel to the water — and lifted her gun mid-air.
It was a stunningly beautiful and dangerously difficult move. Her prolonged airtime bought her precious seconds — enough for another round of shots. The discs shattered and splashed into the sea. Just as the wave came crashing down, she twisted, unfurled, and dove, her taut waist bending like a drawn bow. Her body traced a breathtaking arc before disappearing from view.
Thanks to those few extra seconds, Chi Yuejing earned five more points than Zeng Jiyuan in that round. The spectators from the Central Surveillance Bureau erupted in quiet cheers, excitement lighting their faces.
Gu Jinxi’s heart was pounding in her chest. The crowd’s enthusiasm roared in her ears, but she couldn’t feel joy. Her fists clenched involuntarily as worry clouded her eyes.
At this moment, she didn’t care about winning or losing — she just prayed Chi Yuejing wouldn’t get hurt.
Far out on the water, Zeng Jiyuan’s mind was boiling with rage.
This female Alpha was his destined nemesis.
Chi Yuejing couldn’t see his face now. If she could, she’d be shocked by the deep hatred in his eyes — like she had stolen something from him.
In fact, there was history between them. Like the Chi family, the Zeng family was also a military lineage. As the next-generation Alpha of the family, Zeng Jiyuan had been meticulously trained. After earning accolades in the Central Fleet, he had hoped to be assigned to his first-choice post — the Central Surveillance Bureau.
But things hadn’t gone as planned. His application was rejected, replaced by another officer with a higher overall rating — a female Alpha recently returned from the Far Star First Fleet.
A woman. If not for her family connections, how else could she have parachuted into a core institution on the capital star?
He still remembered the disappointment in his elders’ eyes and the backhanded jabs from his peers when he failed to land the job. Rage burned in his chest.
All of this — the cheers, the applause… should’ve belonged to him.
The coastline was drawing near. Ahead of him, that white figure was still in the lead, though she was slightly hunched — clearly on the verge of exhaustion.
A shadow darkened Zeng Jiyuan’s gaze. He could no longer suppress the frenzy in his heart. His thumb slid to the booster switch on his propulsion unit…
Bang—!
He lunged forward, ramming straight toward her.
