Chapter 14: Borrowing a Knife
That voice was abnormally loud, instantly alarming half the camp.
Chi Yuejing hadn’t been sleeping deeply, so the moment she heard it, she sat up on high alert. She glanced at the sofa cushion outside and saw that Gu JinXiao was also awake—already dressed and ready to go.
The commotion outside the tent was growing louder. Gu JinXiao stood up and said, “You’re still injured—stay here. I’ll go take a look.”
When she stepped outside, she saw a tall Alpha still fuming a short distance away, with an Omega beside him softly trying to calm him down.
“What happened?” she asked as she walked up to Xia Wanwan, who had also come out to see what was going on after being woken up.
Xia Wanwan still looked a little sleepy and said quietly, “We’re not exactly sure yet. It seems someone was peeping outside a tent… It startled Lu Chen, and he ran out but didn’t find anyone… It’s honestly terrifying.”
Lu Chen was the Alpha officer, and the person beside him was someone familiar—Gu JinXiao remembered her name was Xiao Fei. At last night’s dinner, she’d enthusiastically helped grill seafood for everyone, a shy and gentle Omega. People had joked about how inseparable the newlyweds were.
To think someone had been caught peeping in the middle of the night—it was all too clear what their intentions might’ve been. Understandably, the expressions of those present were filled with righteous anger.
Who could’ve imagined that a routine team-building day would see someone’s privacy violated like this?
Over on the other side, Shitiya had returned after asking around. His brows were furrowed as he softly informed his wife, “Xiao Fei was just about to take a bath when it happened. Fortunately, Lu Chen was alert. He heard something outside the tent, ran out, and though he didn’t catch anyone, he did find… this.”
He opened his palm, revealing a small and delicate eavesdropping device. Xia Wanwan immediately scowled upon seeing it. “Who would do this? Sneaking around the newlyweds’ tent with something like this… it’s criminal!”
She grew increasingly furious as she spoke—then turned and noticed Gu JinXiao had been silent this whole time.
“Senior Gu, are you thinking something?” she asked with concern, noticing her pale face.
Gu JinXiao hesitated as if deliberating whether to speak. Her face flushed bright red, and her fingers instinctively twisted the hem of her clothes. Seeing this, Shitiya tactfully turned around. “I’ll go ask around some more.”
Only after he left did Gu JinXiao exhale slightly, though her face was still marked with discomfort. In a low voice, she told Xia Wanwan, “…Since no one was caught, I first suspected I might’ve imagined it. But after hearing what Major Lu said just now, I thought I should warn you…”
Xia Wanwan hadn’t expected that Gu JinXiao had experienced the same thing. Outraged, she immediately said, “You’re absolutely right to speak up! Who would’ve thought someone would dare spy in a military camp with such strict security? This has to be an inside job! It’s disgusting, and we must get to the bottom of it!”
Gu JinXiao bit her lip in embarrassment. “But that person clashed with Yuejing earlier today. If I accuse him now, people from the Inquiry Division might think I’m just taking revenge…”
As she spoke, she looked down. Under the dim light, Xia Wanwan caught a glimmer in her eyes—helplessness mixed with shame. Feeling a surge of determination, she spoke up, “I believe you. If you say you saw what looked like a burn mark on that person, that’s already a solid lead. We can verify it another way…”
With a clear suspect and Lu Chen’s testimony, investigating wouldn’t be unjustified. She made up her mind. “I’ll go talk to my husband. To avoid suspicion, you stay here and wait for updates.”
Gu JinXiao looked at her warmly. “You be careful too. It’s best if everyone checks their tents.”
She didn’t need to say more. After learning about the peeping incident, the keen Alpha officers had already begun combing the campsite thoroughly, and their activity had drawn the attention of others. Soon, news of “a voyeur in the camp” spread like wildfire across the whole area.
Zeng Jiyuan never could have imagined that the Central Inspection Division’s Alphas would be this overbearing.
He’d been resting peacefully in his tent when a burst of noise outside startled him. Before he could react, a group of tall Alphas burst in and forcibly restrained him.
“What are you doing?! Let go of me!”
No one responded to his shouting. What truly shocked him was that after subduing him, they said nothing and started rifling through his luggage.
“Stop—” He saw them open his suitcase and suddenly panicked. Struggling furiously, he yelled, “You can’t touch my stuff without permission! I’ll report you to the military tribunal!”
Before he could finish, something hit him square in the face—a dull pain blossomed as one of the officers sneered, “File your report later. Explain this first!”
A flurry of items hit the ground. Zeng Jiyuan’s heart pounded wildly. Still trying to save face, he shouted, “Why should I explain anything? Does the Central Inspection Division even have the authority to police Inquiry Division’s private matters?”
He deliberately made a scene, hoping someone from his side would notice. As expected, minutes later, the Inquiry Division’s Director, Ados, arrived with a squad of guards, clearly furious.
“Shitiya, what the hell are you doing, barging into my unit’s tent in the middle of the night? Are you trying to start a mutiny?” His face was dark with anger.
Shitiya had looked grim ever since finding what was in the suitcase. At Ados’s words, he coldly scoffed, “Mutiny? Then maybe you’d like to explain why your subordinate is carrying these things around during a team-building trip?”
He gestured to the ground. Scattered among the mess were clearly marked mini surveillance and eavesdropping devices—clearly from the Inquiry Division.
Even someone as composed as Ados froze momentarily at the sight before regaining his calm. “What, the Central Inspection Division is done dealing with bugs and now turns its sights on fellow soldiers? Typical. You’ve always looked down on us intelligence units. For your information, these are weapons—for our line of work.”
His voice was confident, believing this would shut Shitiya down. But unexpectedly, the latter’s expression only grew more ironic—until he outright laughed.
“Weapons, huh?” Shitiya gestured for his subordinates to gather the items. “Great. Then please accompany me to the military commission to explain why you’re pointing these weapons at your allies. Was bugging our camp part of your orders too?”
That accusation was deadly serious. The tent fell into dead silence, the air charged with tension. Neither side backed down.
Ados, a veteran strategist, quickly sensed the danger. Raising a hand to calm his men, he then said, with feigned confusion, “There must be some misunderstanding…”
Truthfully, he had ordered a new recruit to test Chi Yuejing’s tent the night before, but upon receiving the report, he’d promptly called it off. After all, this camp wasn’t just housing the Inspection Division—there were high-ranking officers and their families present. The reputation of the Intelligence Division couldn’t afford another scandal.
That thought darkened his expression. Turning to Zeng Jiyuan, he said coldly, “I assure you, the Inquiry Division never conducted surveillance on our allies. We do not engage in such things.”
Shitiya didn’t let up. He held up the bug. “Then explain this. Your devices must be marked, right? Tell me if this one belongs to him.”
Seeing the device, Zeng Jiyuan froze in shock. His face said it all. That eavesdropper… he’d searched for it all afternoon and thought he’d lost it. How was it in their hands?
But this was incriminating evidence. He panicked and twisted around to shout at Ados, “Director! That’s not mine—I lost it this afternoon! Someone must’ve taken it—I didn’t leave my tent all night, please believe me—!”
“Shut up!”
Ados’s temple throbbed in anger. He’d thought this recruit was smart, but now he’d cracked after just a few prods. His fury exploded: “You’ve disappointed me!”
As director, Ados could have covered up a minor eavesdropping device. But now, not only had this idiot openly clashed with the others, he’d also lost surveillance gear.
In that case, he might as well throw him under the bus and let him take the full hit.
Decision made, he shouted, “You lost to Colonel Chi in a friendly match, and instead of reflecting on your performance, you resorted to this? I will not tolerate such behavior!”
With that statement, he pinned the whole mess on Zeng Jiyuan personally—turning an institutional scandal into a “rogue officer” issue.
As for Zeng Jiyuan… Ados cast a scornful glance at the collapsed Alpha. Just a pawn brought in through connections—he’d find another.
After that declaration, Zeng Jiyuan’s face turned ashen. He knew there would be no easy way out of this. Collapsing in defeat, his eyes dimmed, overtaken by a growing shadow of despair.
The night grew even darker.
Standing at the entrance of their tent, Chi Yuejing looked up as a graceful silhouette slowly approached.
“Is it settled?” she asked.
Gu JinXiao didn’t answer. She merely let out a gentle sigh and turned her head toward the distant campfires, her eyes reflecting a flickering, unreadable light.
