Chapter 22: The Dog Protects His Wife
A relieved sigh echoed through the quiet room.
“So it was you, Senior,” Ge Lingrou said, a bit embarrassed as she set down the high heel she had used as a weapon. Perhaps realizing how unladylike her actions had been, she patted her chest and awkwardly added, “You scared me just now—I thought it was some kind of creep…”
Her previously guarded expression noticeably relaxed, but Gu Jinxi frowned. Placing the spare evening gown onto the sofa, she asked, “Xiaorou, why are you in this room?”
She had clearly locked the lounge door before going into the washroom. Logically, Ge Lingrou shouldn’t have been able to enter so easily.
Hearing the question, Ge Lingrou obediently replied, “My dress got stained. I was waiting for my brother at the main entrance when a waiter accidentally spilled a drink on me. He brought me here… Uh? I don’t think he told me there was anyone in this room.”
The scene had been chaotic, and after the mishap with her gown, she had followed the waiter in a hurry without thinking too much. Now that she reflected on it, something did feel off.
Gu Jinxi had a vague suspicion. Without waiting for her to finish, she strode over to the door, grabbed the handle, and pressed down. Just as she expected, the lock wouldn’t budge, as if something was jamming it from the outside.
She knocked on the door and called out loudly several times, but there was no response.
“How could this be? When I opened the door earlier, it was clearly…” Watching her actions, Ge Lingrou also realized something was wrong. Alarmed, she tapped the personal device on her wrist. “I’ll contact my brother right away!”
But of course, whoever set this up wouldn’t make such a careless mistake. After several failed attempts to connect the communicator, she flung her hand in frustration and said anxiously, “…There’s no signal here.”
“Looks like someone locked us in here on purpose.”
While Ge Lingrou tried to call for help, Gu Jinxi also tested her own device—no signal at all. She turned and walked toward the other side of the room, saying calmly, “Don’t worry. I’ll see if I can find something to open the door.”
After all, this was a high-end event hosted by the Federation government. Whoever plotted this likely wouldn’t dare do anything too blatant. The hotel’s electronic lock—if it wasn’t too advanced—might be something she could deal with in time.
Her voice was calm and composed, matching her serene presence. It had a strangely soothing effect. Ge Lingrou stared at her dazedly and unconsciously relaxed a little.
Luckily, it was Senior Gu—someone she trusted completely. Otherwise, just being in the same room with a young Alpha would’ve made her too nervous to bear.
Once they got out of here, she was definitely going to ask her brother to investigate and find out who had set her up.
After a quick search of the room, Gu Jinxi found a small eyebrow razor in a drawer in the washroom. Though the blade was only a few millimeters thick, it was the best tool she had for now.
She returned to the door, kicked off her inconvenient high heels, and stood barefoot on the carpet. Pressing the razor against the edge of the electronic lock’s panel, she began prying at it with force…
The lock and door were seamlessly fitted. This required intense focus. She patiently worked the blade along the panel while using her other hand to jiggle the handle in rhythm, listening carefully for any sound from outside.
Ge Lingrou couldn’t help, so she obediently sat off to the side to avoid being a distraction. Maybe because she was too nervous, she began to feel the room grow hotter. A wave of heat swept through her.
She glanced at Gu Jinxi by the door and, not wanting to seem delicate, merely tugged at her collar. But the heat only worsened—her throat went dry.
This didn’t feel like ordinary stuffiness from a closed room.
When she wiped sweat from her forehead for the third time, a terrible realization hit her. Before she could cry out in warning, her heart clenched violently, her legs gave out, and she collapsed backward onto the sofa with a thud.
Gu Jinxi heard the noise and turned around, startled by what she saw.
Ge Lingrou was curled up on the sofa, her cheeks, neck, and arms—all exposed by the gown—were flushed a deep red, like a cooked shrimp. She was whimpering in pain.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Jinxi rushed over instinctively, but before she even got close, the rich scent of overripe cherries hit her nose.
At the same moment she inhaled the scent, alarm bells exploded in her mind. She halted in her tracks.
It was the scent of an Omega’s pheromones—thick with heat and impossible to avoid. It hit her like a wave, leaving her stunned.
This wasn’t a natural heat. From Ge Lingrou’s symptoms, it seemed like some external agent had forcibly triggered her instincts. The pheromones were flooding the room. If they didn’t do something fast…
And this room was small. Even though Gu Jinxi tried to back away, she had already inhaled some of the Omega’s pheromones. Her heartbeat began to pound wildly, her temples throbbing like something might burst from her veins.
Ge Lingrou’s condition was even worse. The Omega’s sensitive nervous system, overwhelmed by instinct, left her curled up in agony, whimpering like a helpless creature. Her uncontrolled pheromones filled the air, desperate for comfort.
If this went on, both of them would be in danger.
Realizing the urgency, Gu Jinxi quickly grabbed the spare dress lent to her by Xia Wanwan and gently covered Ge Lingrou’s head with it, trying to trap some of the scent.
“I need to isolate you for now. Don’t worry—it’ll be okay.”
Despite her own deteriorating condition, she gritted her teeth, hoisted Ge Lingrou up, and pushed open the washroom door, locking her inside.
Even this simple act left her exhausted.
Luckily, her allergy to most Omega pheromones triggered a severe immune response, which helped her remain conscious longer than usual.
Still, the searing pheromones lingered in her sinuses, making her want to vomit. Her nerves twitched like electric currents, trying to reject the invading scent. Her vision swam with dark clouds, her mind burned with confusion.
She had to unlock that door before completely blacking out.
Forcing her body forward, she picked up the eyebrow razor again and resumed picking at the door lock. Her hands were shaking badly. The blade slipped several times, cutting her fingers. The sharp sting burned, but she didn’t stop—just tightened her grip and kept chiseling at the seam.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
Bl00d dripped from her fingertips onto the carpet. Her grip weakened. Just as she bit her lip to try again, a familiar sound reached her ears—footsteps.
That sound brought a surge of strength out of nowhere. She lunged at the door, pounding it hard with both hands.
The footsteps paused, then rushed over without hesitation. Gu Jinxi heard a loud bang and something crashing to the floor. Then—the door lock turned.
The door swung open.
A refreshing breeze flowed in, followed by voices and footsteps. Amid the noise, someone approached her. Before she could react, a cool hand wrapped around her waist.
Her burning face fell into a soft embrace. The light scent of white iris surrounded her protectively. Gu Jinxi gasped, hearing the steady heartbeat in her ear—each beat thudding against her own heart.
“Chi Yuejing…” she murmured instinctively. Then, softly reminded, “Ge Lingrou is still inside—go help her.”
Chi Yuejing didn’t respond at first. She held Gu Jinxi like a precious treasure, her deep eyes dark as ink, burning like constellations in a wildfire. After a moment of silence, she whispered, “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything.”
After she and Stia met with that high-ranking official, Chi Yuejing learned Gu Jinxi had left. When she heard Jinxi had her dress ruined by a waiter and had to change, she immediately sensed something was wrong. Unable to sit still, she got up to look for her.
Seeing her so tense, Xia Wanwan grew uneasy too and followed her toward the lounge. They knocked on several doors but couldn’t find Gu Jinxi anywhere.
“The waiter said it was this way.” Xia Wanwan began to panic. “I swear I saw them go this way…”
Chi Yuejing lowered her eyes and forced down her rising anxiety. “It’s okay. Maybe she just went somewhere else. Let’s keep looking.”
Her voice was calm, her steps steady. Xia Wanwan didn’t notice that Chi Yuejing’s hand was clenched so tightly her knuckles had turned white.
The hallway was long and guests were still nearby, so they couldn’t run. They kept searching and listening quietly. Just as they reached a corner, Xia Wanwan let out a small “Huh?”
She pointed. “I think that’s the waiter who took Senior Gu. But he changed clothes… I’m not sure.”
At that moment, the fire escape door ahead moved slightly, and someone slipped past. Chi Yuejing rushed forward, yanked the door open, and spotted the man.
He was trying to sneak away when she caught him. Grabbing the back of his collar, she yanked him backward, slamming him into the wall.
“Which room did you take that young lady to?” Her gaze was sharp.
It was indeed the head waiter. He had changed into an inconspicuous gray jacket and shrank back against the wall, too frightened to speak.
He assumed she wouldn’t dare get violent at an event like this. But Chi Yuejing just smiled faintly, her peach blossom eyes dark and icy—like she was looking at a fool.
“You think I can’t make you talk?” Her cold voice cut like a blade. The waiter’s heart pounded. She raised her hand—slender, elegant fingers gleaming like polished jade.
The next second, her hand closed around his throat and squeezed.
There was no doubt in his mind—she would kill him.
His neck creaked as her grip tightened. Air was forced from his lungs. Stars danced in his vision. He struggled, legs going limp, feet scraping helplessly on the carpet.
He was going to die…
The fear shattered his composure. He grabbed her wrist, choked out a few sounds, and gestured that he would talk.
Chi Yuejing finally released him.
Xia Wanwan arrived at the fire escape to find the man coughing violently, spilling everything in a panic.
“I thought they all knew each other! That guest just told me to take her to that room… I swear I don’t know what he was planning!”
Just hearing someone had paid this man to trap Gu Jinxi in a locked room made Chi Yuejing’s face go cold. She asked, “You said ‘take all of them’? Who else?”
A few minutes later, under his lead, they found the overlooked lounge. The hallway had a “Maintenance in Progress” sign, so no one thought to check. Inside another room off the corridor, Chi Yuejing kicked open the door and found someone familiar.
Zeng Jiyuan stared blankly at her, stunned she had found this place so quickly. As he panicked and tried to hide something, she slammed him into the table. His face hit the wood with a thud.
Chi Yuejing stood over him, her gaze icy. Her eyes narrowed as she saw what was on the table.
Crack! With a sharp snap, Zeng Jiyuan’s right arm was broken clean in two. He collapsed like a sack of flour.
“You should feel lucky,” she said coolly. “Because I don’t have time to kill you right now.”
“…”
The scent of Omega pheromones still lingered. Xia Wanwan, the only Omega woman present, donned medical gear to help Ge Lingrou in the bathroom. Stia arrived next, face grim, and headed toward Chi Yuejing.
“That bastard used a pheromone-inducing agent—outrageous,” he said darkly. “If you hadn’t called me immediately, locking an Alpha and Omega in a room with that drug… the consequences would’ve been catastrophic.”
His eyes flicked to Gu Jinxi.
Even after being drugged, she had stayed calm and worked to save herself. Only someone with immense mental fortitude could have lasted until rescue.
Thankfully, she had.
Otherwise, this would have caused an irreparable rift between Central Inspection and General Ge.
“It shows just how vicious the planner really was.”
“We’ve locked down all news,” Stia continued. “General Ge will arrive shortly with his people. Not a word of this incident will leak.”
Chi Yuejing gave a faint nod. She had refused help since finding Gu Jinxi, holding her like a treasure the entire time. Only now did she seem to regain a bit of awareness.
“I won’t let anyone who hurt her get away,” she said softly.
Stia nodded. “Don’t worry. Using banned drugs violates the Gender Rights Act. The Inspection Office will pursue this to the end. Zeng Jiyuan and his accomplices won’t escape.”
He patted her shoulder. “There’s a trusted military doctor upstairs. Take Miss Gu to get her injuries treated.”
The venue had a temporary medical station. Thanks to Stia, a trusted military doctor was sent. After treating the cuts on Gu Jinxi’s hands, the doctor said:
“She inhaled a high-dose pheromone inducer and had a severe allergic reaction. We can’t give her any sedatives for now. She’ll have to ride it out.”
Chi Yuejing grew anxious. “Is there anything that could ease her discomfort?”
The doctor paused and looked at her strangely.
“Aren’t you her partner?” he asked plainly, as if she’d asked something dumb. “Didn’t you learn how to soothe a partner in heat during ABO physiology class?”
