Chapter 26: Go Home And Hug Again
That ring wasn’t something Gu Jin Xiao put on right away. Instead, she carefully stored it away, treasuring it.
The next day’s lunch was again delivered to her room. One particular dish—drunken chicken in huadiao wine—had a unique flavor, with the fragrance of wine mingling with the faint scent of plums. She ate a few extra bites before setting her chopsticks down and sipping tea. Just then, the kind face of Uncle Chi appeared at the doorway.
“Word just came from the treatment room—Miss is ready to come out of the pod,” Uncle Chi said cheerfully. Then, the next second, he raised his brows in surprise and called out, “…Miss Gu! You shouldn’t be running right after eating!”
But the usually calm and quiet Miss Gu seemed not to have heard him at all. She had already set down her chopsticks and darted out the door like a nimble little deer, dashing straight toward the stairs.
Young people these days…
Uncle Chi chuckled and shook his head. Seeing no one else nearby, he let out a quiet sigh of relief himself before hurrying to catch up.
Gu Jin Xiao took the stairs three at a time. She didn’t even know why she was running—only that there was a vague hope inside her, a strong desire to see that person as soon as possible. Her steps were light as she crossed the corridor, but she came to a sudden stop when she heard that familiar voice.
Chi Yue Jing saw her at a glance. Sunlight poured into the room, illuminating everything in clarity. Gu Jin Xiao stood right in the middle of it, a pretty flush blooming on her cheeks, her bright eyes lifting to meet hers, unblinking.
She had come hoping to confirm with her own eyes that she had returned safely. Yet now that their gazes met, a wave of nervous hesitation swept over her, and she instinctively shrank back a little.
It was hard for Gu Jin Xiao to define her feelings at that moment. She took a soft breath, trying to compose herself, aiming for a more natural and calm expression. But before she could finish adjusting, Chi Yue Jing had already walked up to her.
Stopping just a step away, she said warmly, “I’m back.”
The treatment pod seemed to have worked well. She looked like her usual self again—sharp and composed. Her dark, peach blossom eyes scanned Gu Jin Xiao with a fiery intensity that made her flush all over again.
“Are you… feeling alright?” Gu Jin Xiao tried to ignore the tension in her chest and asked with concern. “The treatment worked okay? All the wounds are healed?”
With each question, Chi Yue Jing either shook or nodded her head with a smile. By the time Gu Jin Xiao repeated for the third time, “Are you sure your body’s okay?” her smile deepened.
She gently interrupted, “I’m perfectly fine. What about you? Are you comfortable here? Eating well?”
Before Gu Jin Xiao could respond, a low chuckle came from behind Chi Yue Jing. Dr. Lan Nuo, holding her medical case in one hand, looked on with thinly veiled amusement. “Commander, just a friendly reminder—you’ve only been gone for 24 hours. Instead of all this nutritional small talk, why not just tell her you missed her?”
Then, knowing better than to linger under her commanding officer’s death glare, she swiftly turned on her heel and walked toward the dining room. “Don’t want to disturb your emotional reunion—excuse me!”
Gu Jin Xiao’s cheeks were now completely flushed. She wanted to stop Dr. Lan to thank her, but before she could move, her wrist was caught in a firm grasp.
Chi Yue Jing gently held her wrist, her voice a little hesitant. “I think… I’m kind of hungry.”
The words immediately shifted Gu Jin Xiao’s focus. Of course—she had been in the treatment pod for an entire day and night. She must be starving. Gu Jin Xiao quickly pushed away the flustered thoughts and said, “Then go rest in your room. I’ll ask Uncle Chi to bring you something easy to digest… There was this really tasty dessert during lunch…”
Chi Yue Jing’s smile curved gently at her lashes. She nodded and added with a weak expression, “Okay. My legs still feel a bit wobbly.”
To prove she wasn’t lying, she leaned slightly toward Gu Jin Xiao, her right hand still wrapped around her wrist. Her fingers slowly slid down to interlock with Gu Jin Xiao’s.
Looking down, she noticed her hand was slightly smaller, just enough to be completely enveloped by Chi Yue Jing’s.
That small realization made Chi Yue Jing’s lips curve up in a barely noticeable smile.
The treatment pod had been painful. The quick-growth serum and neural regeneration rays created searing pain throughout her body. Even breathing tugged at her lungs, and she had to keep her movements minimal. In that eerie silence, the image that filled her mind was from the night of the banquet.
The way Gu Jin Xiao’s soft hand brushed across her palm—like a flower blooming quietly in her heart.
Once I’m out, I want to hold her hand again, she had thought in the midst of that pain.
Now her wish had come true.
She didn’t want to let go.
“….”
A few days later, with Chi Yue Jing fully recovered, the last thing Gu Jin Xiao had been worried about was resolved. She was now able to throw herself wholeheartedly into advancing the logistics for the Wu Si project.
Negotiations with General Ge Ling went smoothly. With military support, their request for starship transport was approved. Now they just needed to prepare the down payment before they could request a flight path slot.
3:00 p.m., Gu Corporation Headquarters
Around the long conference table sat dozens of stern-faced executives and shareholders, many of whom whispered quietly among themselves.
It had been a long time since such a grand gathering. Today’s emergency board meeting was convened by Gu Cheng Ye, the current acting CEO of Gu Corp, to discuss a single agenda item: the unusually high transport cost requested by the Wu Si Project.
Once the details became clear, the attendees exchanged knowing looks. While the amount was indeed steep, the real purpose of this meeting was obvious—it was a power play between the company’s two heirs.
Gu Cheng Ye had spent more than a decade at Gu Corp, rising from department manager to his current status. Now, he was being threatened by his younger sister’s sudden rise in power. Naturally, he felt threatened.
“That transport fee is for the so-called military contract from the Wu Si Project, right? It’s a lot of money… can we really guarantee any profit?”
“You’re taking this too seriously. Who cares about profit? This entire company might as well be in her pocket already. The real question is—whose side are you on?”
The hum of whispered discussions reached Gu Cheng Ye at the head of the table. He adjusted his tie and calmly said, “Let’s all settle down.”
At his words, the chatter died down.
He scanned the room confidently and said, “No need to worry. This will be handled properly. Even if my little sister has high status now, trying to pull 700 million credits without explanation is something we must discuss.”
He deliberately obscured the true purpose of the “700 million” transfer. Many of the family shareholders present were only interested in annual dividends and barely contributed to the company. A little fear-mongering would be more than enough to stir them up.
As expected, upon hearing the massive amount, a few older shareholders began to grumble.
One loud voice boomed from the end of the table.
“This is ridiculous!”
The speaker was a balding, middle-aged man with a shiny scalp and a round beer belly, so heavy his chair groaned beneath him. Once he saw he had everyone’s attention, he paused theatrically and said:
“Where is Gu Jin Xiao? So many elders are here discussing her issue, and she doesn’t even bother to show her face? How disrespectful!”
Clearly, this was an attempt to provoke her. After all, this meeting was called on short notice, and Gu Cheng Ye had only just sent his assistant to inform her a few minutes earlier.
But this balding man had his own motives. His family wasn’t close to the Gu family matriarch and had benefited more from Gu Cheng Ye’s friendliness. If the company ended up in Cheng Ye’s hands, it’d only be to their advantage.
Eager to please, he raised his voice again: “Young people treat business like a game. I say we scrap the whole contract—”
The word scrap had barely left his lips when the meeting room doors opened.
A slender figure stepped in.
Gu Jin Xiao entered at a brisk pace, her expression calm, obsidian eyes glancing lightly toward the balding man. That one look was enough to make him squirm—as if all his schemes had been laid bare.
Then she looked away and continued forward.
Everyone then noticed—she hadn’t come alone.
Behind her walked another tall female Alpha, clad in a sharp Federal military uniform. It was none other than Miss Chi from the Chi family.
She followed Gu Jin Xiao step for step. Once Gu Jin Xiao took her seat, she pulled out a thermos, unscrewed the lid, and placed it within easy reach. Only then did she retreat a step and stand at attention behind her.
This scene brought one thing to everyone’s minds: The rumors about their reconciliation must be true.
This wasn’t just reconciliation—this was basically acting as her personal bodyguard.
Gu Jin Xiao remained perfectly composed, even sipping water from the cup with ease. But for everyone else, having a Federal Colonel standing before them was anything but normal. Within seconds, chairs scraped and legs shuffled as people leapt to their feet.
One person even knocked over his chair.
In the end, a corpulent executive managed to scurry over and push his office chair toward Chi Yue Jing. “Miss Chi, please—have a seat!”
Chi Yue Jing smiled politely. “No need to be so formal. I’m not a shareholder—I just came along with Jin Xiao. Please, don’t mind me.”
No one believed her.
Even CEO Gu Cheng Ye felt the pressure. He fastened his suit jacket, plastered on his usual smile, and said, “Colonel Chi, no need to stand on ceremony—we’re all family here. Xiao Xiao… don’t make it hard on your elders.”
Gu Jin Xiao shot him a calm glance.
Under the lights, her fair complexion seemed to glow faintly. Her gaze, though soft, carried a chilling composure.
Gu Cheng Ye’s heart skipped a beat.
“Go ahead and sit,” she said politely. “We’ll finish soon.”
With that, Chi Yue Jing finally sat. She swept her gaze across the room and added warmly, “I won’t participate in the discussion. I’ll just sit further back… How about over there?”
She gestured toward a seat at the far end of the table—right by the door.
The seat belonged, unmistakably, to the balding man who had spoken up earlier.
