After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Love is Enough
The ever-particular Miss Gu finished her delicious dinner and, after enjoying a luxuriously exotic essential oil bath in the new home’s bathroom, stepped into the bedroom feeling refreshed—only for her expression to freeze abruptly.
She saw Chi Yuejing sitting on the sofa reading a book. The blinds were open, letting the cool night breeze from the courtyard sweep through the room, carrying a faint scent of mint leaves. The woman beneath the window looked serene, clearly ready for a peaceful evening.
Chi Yuejing looked up from the pages. “All done with your bath? I bought that essential oil today—it’s supposed to relieve fatigue and relax the muscles. The scent might be a bit different from what you’re used to.”
Gu Jinxi wasn’t in the mood to discuss essential oils. Her eyes swept the room, then she murmured, “I’m going to check the other rooms.”
She walked down the corridor, her footsteps echoing faintly. Not wanting to reveal her awkwardness, she deliberately slowed her pace. But when she turned around, she found Chi Yuejing had quietly followed her.
“You never said this house… only has one bedroom,” Gu Jinxi said, her voice slightly flustered, lacking her usual confidence.
Chi Yuejing looked at her calmly. “You never asked.”
Moonlight streamed across the tiled hallway, overlapping their shadows. Gu Jinxi quickly averted her gaze. When she looked up, she saw a faint smile on Chi Yuejing’s face, as if she had already caught her shy reaction—her heart skipped a beat.
“I thought you knew,” she mumbled like a mosquito, “We shared a room before, but that was… because we didn’t have a choice…”
Chi Yuejing listened quietly. Then she gently lowered her gaze and brushed a fallen leaf from Gu Jinxi’s hair.
“Mm, precisely because we’ve always shared a room, I thought maybe you were used to it—so I didn’t request a separate one.”
Sensing her discomfort, Chi Yuejing smiled slightly. “But if you really don’t like it, I can ask the agent tomorrow to see if we can switch. What do you think?”
It seemed a bit excessive to go back to the agent just over a bedroom.
That overly gentle gaze made Gu Jinxi feel even more self-conscious. She pursed her lips and turned her head awkwardly. “…Forget it. We’re only here for three months anyway. I can adapt.”
As she watched Gu Jinxi’s retreating figure return to the bedroom in compromise, a soft smile appeared in Chi Yuejing’s eyes. But before she could move, a sudden “clang” came from inside, clearly something had startled Gu Jinxi again.
Back in the bedroom, Gu Jinxi stood frozen, staring at the wall where a giant heart-shaped light projection was cast. Her hand was still paused mid-air by the window. She looked in disbelief between the window and the shadow, then turned her stunned gaze to Chi Yuejing.
“…Seems your taste is more unique than I thought.”
Her brows furrowed slightly. “Is there anything else about this house I should know?”
“…..”
The next morning, soothed by a European-style breakfast, Gu Jinxi had temporarily forgotten the emotional trauma from the night before. After breakfast, Chi Yuejing grabbed the car keys to drive her to the mining site.
“I’ll bring lunch around noon. Just wait for me in the office,” she said. Then added, “If you have any cravings, tell me ahead of time—I’ll try to make them.”
Gu Jinxi hadn’t expected her to start the lunch-delivery life this soon, and felt a little flustered. “You’re delivering already today? Was there enough time to shop and prep?”
“No worries. The market near home opens early every day—it’s very convenient.”
After stopping at the mine’s front gate, Chi Yuejing waved goodbye to her wife with a smile. Just as she was about to drive off, someone called out to her.
Kasha, carrying a lunch bag, waved excitedly. “Good morning, Commander Chi!”
Yesterday’s interaction had left her with a strong fondness for the kind and gentle lady boss. Now seeing her again, Kasha said warmly, “Thank you for the food yesterday. Because of you… my sisters finally got to eat fresh fruit. I really, really appreciate it.”
On N92, where water was more expensive than oil, ordinary households rarely spent money on non-filling things like fruit. Even if their parents occasionally splurged on a small piece, it always went to the only son, while the others had to settle for watching. The generous amount Chi Yuejing had sent allowed everyone to get a bite.
Chi Yuejing was also pleased to see the young girl again. She bowed slightly with a smile. “No need to thank me. I should be thanking you… for showing me such a great market.”
After a short chat, Kasha had a flash of inspiration. “If you’re going back to the market, let my sisters deliver your groceries! They help Aunt Amo move goods every morning—perfect time to run errands for you too!”
She quickly added, fearing it might seem like a money grab, “They won’t charge you for errands and will bring back receipts for your confirmation…”
The idea actually suited Chi Yuejing well. Though shopping daily wasn’t hard for her, having help would give her more time to explore new recipes—maybe even make sweet treats for Gu Jinxi. With that in mind, she nodded. “That works. But I can’t have them work for free. Let’s settle their pay based on performance.”
With that settled, and time ticking on, she bid Kasha goodbye and drove home to prepare the day’s menu.
“….”
As the summer heat intensified, the air grew more suffocating by the day.
The mining site buzzed with energy—workers drenched in sweat manned robotic arms, hauling heavy crates of ore. Off-shift workers clutched meal boxes and hurried toward the canteen. Only Gu Jinxi went against the flow, heading toward the office.
Someone joked, “President Gu, not eating yet?”
Another cut in playfully, “You think she’s like you, single and stuck with the canteen slop? President Gu has a home—Commander Chi brings homemade bento every day, rain or shine!”
“I may be single, but what’s your excuse? You’ve got a partner, and still no bento!”
Laughter rang out. Gu Jinxi smiled softly, nodded politely, and continued walking briskly toward the office, her steps noticeably lighter.
Ever since Chi Yuejing started bringing her lunch, her quality of life had skyrocketed. Somehow, that woman managed to think up a different bento combination every single day.
Sometimes it was assorted rice balls paired with seaweed and scallop soup. Sometimes chilled seafood with wagyu fried rice. Or cute floral steamed buns and shrimp fritters. And now that the heat had worsened, there was always a chilled dessert added to every meal.
What might she bring today?
With that small anticipation, Gu Jinxi pushed open her office door and set the small dining table in place to await Chi Yuejing’s arrival.
While waiting, she caught a glimpse of herself in the vanity mirror. Her hair looked a bit messy, so she sat down to take out her clip. Her smooth long hair fell around her shoulders. She started to re-pin it… but paused. Tilting her head slightly—
Would Chi Yuejing prefer her with her hair down?
But… why did she care what Chi Yuejing preferred?
She frowned in annoyance at her own thoughts, hesitated, and finally left the clip on the table.
Time ticked by. A few minutes later, hearing the usual chime from the prayer temple outside, she glanced at her terminal—already past Chi Yuejing’s usual arrival time.
Chi Yuejing had always been punctual—always arriving five minutes before noon. But today, she was inexplicably late.
Maybe she was delayed on the road. The heat was intense, and the roads rough—driving with a lunchbox full of soups and sides, delays were understandable…
A few more minutes passed.
By 12:10, she still hadn’t shown up. Gu Jinxi opened her contact list. Her finger hovered over the “Family – Chi Yuejing” tab. After a pause, she didn’t tap it.
It was only 12:10. Would calling her now seem like she was accusing her of being late?
Maybe wait five more minutes.
Those five minutes felt excruciatingly long. Gu Jinxi sat upright, ears perked at every footstep from the hallway. Every time someone approached, she straightened instinctively—only to slowly slump again.
Maybe Chi Yuejing was just tired of doing this. After all, she’d never properly thanked her…
When she arrives, should she say thank you? Or maybe… buy her a gift? After being taken care of for so long, giving her something small wouldn’t seem too much, right?
Her mind whirled with scattered thoughts, not realizing she was picking at the edge of the tablecloth until it was nearly shredded.
Just as her anxiety peaked, the communicator buzzed. Seeing the familiar name, she answered before the first ring finished.
“Where are you?” Her voice betrayed a slight trembling, almost like a soft complaint. “I’ve been waiting forever. Why haven’t you come?”
But the familiar voice she expected didn’t respond. Instead, a timid little girl’s voice came through:
“Excuse me, are you Miss Gu? Sister Chi… something happened to her… She won’t be able to come right now…”
Upon hearing that voice, the light in Gu Jinxi’s eyes dimmed, and her heart sank like a stone.
