After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 3
Chapter 3: Insfection
Those eyes, even through the holographic screen, seemed to emit heat that made Gu Jin Xiao’s skin prickle faintly. It was only then she realized her attire might indeed be inappropriate. But the lingering fear in her subconscious kept her from hanging up the call. She could only force herself to act nonchalant and replied, “We’re both Alphas, what’s the big deal?”
Chi Yuejing paused for a second, then chuckled. “I thought you’d say, ‘We used to be married, after all.’”
“…What do you want from me?” Gu Jin Xiao really didn’t want to continue down that path of conversation. She set the communicator down on the table and casually walked toward the window, quickly pulling the fluttering curtain shut.
Too focused on closing the window, she completely forgot what this action might look like to the person watching from the other side. The hem of her nightdress, which barely reached the tops of her thighs, swayed with her movement, revealing her long, slender legs. Her dainty knees looked rather cute, and her pale skin practically glowed on screen.
Chi Yuejing went silent for a moment. It took a while before she finally said, “I just wanted to remind you—I’ll be coming to pick you up tomorrow for the test.”
Gu Jin Xiao turned back, a bit on edge. “Why? You think I’d shirk my responsibility?”
She immediately realized the phrasing was terribly ambiguous and coughed lightly to cover the awkwardness. “What I meant was, I’ll go get tested first thing in the morning. You don’t need to worry—I’m not going to run away.”
This time, Chi Yuejing was even quieter. After a long pause, she finally said softly, “That’s not what I meant.”
Her gentle tone made Gu Jin Xiao hesitate. But she really didn’t want to get more entangled, so she insisted, “Whatever you think, I really will go. So please don’t come pick me up.”
Her rejection was crystal clear.
Chi Yuejing could only abandon her plan to persuade her for now.
Seeing her fall silent, Gu Jin Xiao breathed a little easier. Then, realizing her tone had been a bit too harsh, she added more gently, “I didn’t get a chance to thank you for tonight… for saving me.”
Chi Yuejing replied quickly, “It’s what I should do. No need to thank me.”
After that, the two fell into silence again. Gu Jin Xiao quietly finished closing the window. It felt awkward just staring at each other, so after waiting a few more seconds and seeing Chi Yuejing didn’t intend to say anything more, she cautiously said, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to bed now.”
As soon as she finished, the screen flickered—the call had been cut off from the other end.
What a weirdo.
Gu Jin Xiao wasn’t used to having her calls hung up on, and stood there a little stunned. She pursed her lips and, after a moment, muttered in irritation, “Psycho…”
She felt slightly annoyed, but thanks to the distraction from the call, the post-trauma anxiety from the Zerg encounter had finally faded a little. She turned and locked the bedroom door. After hesitating over whether to turn off the lights, she gave up and just crawled into bed with the soft, floral-scented duvet still glowing under the warm light.
The cozy bedding gave her a sense of security. Curling up on her side in her usual sleeping posture, Gu Jin Xiao closed her eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep.
The warm yellow light cast a hazy glow on the window frame, like a blurry moon. Not far beyond the villa, parked quietly beside the garden wall, was another planetary vehicle. A tall figure stood beside it, the golden insignia on her uniform gleaming like a star.
She held that still, watching posture, her eyes fixed intently on the lit window. The communicator on her wrist kept flashing with incoming messages, all of which she ignored.
Bathed in moonlight, her beautiful fox-like eyes gleamed with a soft silver hue. As if reminded of something amusing, the woman’s red lips curved into a faint, captivating smile. She exhaled lightly.
“Coward…”
“…”
Gu Jin Xiao got up very early the next morning.
Even without Chi Yuejing’s reminder, as a law-abiding citizen of the Federation, she would’ve gone to the inspection center as required.
Zergs were humanity’s natural enemy, and the neurotoxins they secreted had irreversible effects on the human brain. Because of this, the Federation’s law mandated that any citizen who had come into contact with a Zerg must report to a testing center within 24 hours.
And knowing Chi Yuejing, she just might really come pick her up, so Gu Jin Xiao left even earlier than planned.
The capital’s testing center was directly overseen by Central Inspection Bureau. Its two towering twin buildings reached into the sky, connected by circular skybridges. Aerial droids hovered up and down, guiding traffic efficiently into the parking zones.
After parking her vehicle and verifying her ID at the entrance, Gu Jin Xiao entered the main hall. Intelligent reception bots stood at the front desk, efficiently distributing people to different processing lines.
The inspection line was nearly full. Many parents were waiting in line with their children. Gu Jin Xiao hadn’t expected the place to be so crowded, so she hesitated for a moment, then headed toward the reception desk.
Behind it sat an Omega receptionist dressed as a nurse. Gu Jin Xiao greeted her politely with a smile. “Hello, it’s my first time here. I’d like to ask—last night I had… first-type contact with a Zerg. Which test should I take?”
The receptionist blinked, clearly stunned for a second by the beauty of the Alpha in front of her. She quickly gathered herself, her face flushing as she responded, “You said first-type contact? Ah—then you can’t line up here. You’ll need to go to the third floor for a serum test first.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s smile began to fade. “You mean a bl00d draw?”
A pen and form were quickly shoved into her hands. The receptionist, still blushing, gently reassured her. “Since first-type contact is very rare in non-combat star systems, we have to be cautious and run a serum test. But don’t worry—unless you have external wounds, the risk of infection is very low.”
Gu Jin Xiao paused for a moment before reluctantly picking up the pen.
Just as she was writing the first line, a hand reached over her shoulder and snatched the pen away.
Chi Yuejing appeared, still with her cool, calm expression. Her tall, slender frame, wrapped in a sharp military uniform, was visually stunning—but Gu Jin Xiao had no mood to appreciate it. She averted her eyes and said quietly, “I’m here doing the test already. What more do you want?”
Chi Yuejing didn’t answer. She simply took the registration form and instructed the receptionist, “This one will be personally escorted by me.”
The receptionist’s eyes widened. “Y-Yes, ma’am!”
Being redirected like this with no room to object made Gu Jin Xiao quite unhappy. Still, she was someone who knew how to behave. As they walked toward the elevator, she asked, “Can’t I just go by myself?”
Chi Yuejing pressed the elevator button and courteously held her arm up to block the sensor, gesturing for Gu Jin Xiao to enter first. She replied in a calm, natural tone, “I happen to be free right now.”
Gu Jin Xiao wanted to say, You don’t have to be this conveniently free, but Chi Yuejing had already stepped in beside her, and the doors slid shut.
In the tense silence that followed, Chi Yuejing suddenly said, “Sometimes… you really don’t seem like an Alpha.”
That comment made Gu Jin Xiao bristle. She turned sharply toward her. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Just what I said.” Chi Yuejing tilted her head slightly toward her, their noses nearly touching. With a smile, she added, “You always look so nervous.”
Those perfectly curved red lips were right in front of her, and to Gu Jin Xiao, they screamed danger—like they’d devour her at any moment. She shrank back slightly and muttered, “I’m just not used to people being this close.”
Chi Yuejing stared at her intently, as if trying to determine whether that was the truth. After a while, she turned away. “Come on, let’s get you tested first.”
Her tone was calm, yet it left no room for objection.
Gu Jin Xiao tried her best to suppress the mess of thoughts in her mind and told herself not to overthink. This is her territory—just cooperate, get through it, and leave.
After all… the divorce will be finalized next month.
Just endure a little longer, and this ridiculous relationship will finally come to an end.
Her forced composure held steady—until she stepped into the examination room.
The moment she noticed there was no one else inside aside from the two of them and smelled the faint scent of disinfectant, Gu Jin Xiao sensed danger.
“Where’s the doctor?” she asked uneasily, glancing up at the person in front of her.
Her calm ex-wife walked to a cabinet and pulled out a fresh pair of medical gloves.
“It’s just a bl00d draw,” she said casually as she opened the packaging. “I’ll do it for you.”
“No! I don’t trust you!” Gu Jin Xiao sprang to her feet and marched toward the door. “I want a licensed medical professional!”
There was no response.
A moment later, a hand blocked her path. Chi Yuejing stood there, as calm and composed as ever, quietly watching her from above.
She was far too tall—several centimeters taller than Gu Jin Xiao. Her slim figure cast a shadow over the light, and in that silhouette, she raised her right hand and gently pressed down on Gu Jin Xiao’s collar.
Her hand, covered in that cold, sterile glove, was beautifully shaped, its joints clear and elegant like a work of art. Cool fingertips slowly slid upward until they rested perfectly on the side of Gu Jin Xiao’s neck.
In that icy, tingling tension, Gu Jin Xiao clearly heard her sigh softly.
“Jin Xiao… compared to everyone else, maybe you really should trust me just a little more.”
