Chapter 31: Calming Down Emotions
The susceptibility period for Alphas was different from that of Omegas. Even someone as gentle and restrained as Gu Jin Xiao found it difficult to resist the agitation and surging possessiveness brought on by instinct.
Especially when right beside her was a scent she adored.
At this moment, however, that enticing fragrance had become a dangerous form of torment. When Gu Jin Xiao realized who she was holding onto, her heart jumped, and her body instinctively tensed up. She exerted a bit of strength with her arms, pushing the two of them apart.
“Why are you here?” she whispered. “Go out… quickly…”
But Chi Yue Jing acted as if she hadn’t heard her. She quietly gazed at the person in front of her. Because of the high fever, Gu Jin Xiao’s whole face was flushed red, even the corners of her eyes tinted with a beautiful blush. She anxiously bit her lip, leaving faint teeth marks—like she had just been kissed fiercely.
The scent of neroli wafted through the air, its fresh sweetness tinged with a hint of citrus, like clear summer morning sunlight, or a delicate, unaware flower blooming deep within a tranquil forest.
Seeing that she hadn’t moved, Gu Jin Xiao frowned and repeated, “Chi Yue Jing, go out now.”
The susceptibility period was a private and sensitive time. Why was this person acting like she didn’t understand and still standing at the door unmoving? Frustration surged in her heart again, making her voice turn a bit more anxious. “You’re bullying me…”
What should’ve sounded like a stern accusation came out soft and whimpering instead, her voice sweet and teary—as if she were sulking.
Hearing that voice, Chi Yue Jing’s gaze darkened. Her deep, inky peach blossom eyes locked onto the girl in front of her. Instead of backing away, she stepped closer.
Gu Jin Xiao instinctively stepped back.
The walk-in closet was narrow. With that single step back, her waist pressed against the hard edge of the island countertop. The cold marble touched her back, leaving her nowhere to escape, forcing her to watch as Chi Yue Jing slowly closed the distance.
Her heartbeat pounded thunderously in her chest, numbing her entire body.
Chi Yue Jing stopped just a step away. Her eyes held a faint smile as she admired the deepening flush on Gu Jin Xiao’s face.
And with each step she took, her pheromones gently seeped out. She moved cautiously—the white iris scent brushing softly against Gu Jin Xiao’s heightened nerves, not overwhelming, but subtly and steadily layering over the neroli until it was completely enveloped.
It was intimate, yet full of protective warmth.
“The susceptibility period is a natural phenomenon. You’ll feel unsettled and want to be near things that make you feel comfortable—things that bring relief,” she said, leaning in and gently taking Gu Jin Xiao’s trembling wrist into her palm. “It’s okay. I’m more than willing to be the one who soothes you.”
Gu Jin Xiao felt like she was about to melt from the heat.
She had to admit, Chi Yue Jing’s words were incredibly tempting. Compared to the intense suppressants that felt like they could tear her apart, the scent of her pheromones was infinitely more delicious. If she could just restrain herself from losing control—a few shallow breaths would ease the discomfort. And she smelled so good.
As if encouraging her, that inviting scent teased her senses, tickling her nose and making her crave more.
She swallowed unconsciously, trying hard to resist the temptation. “No… susceptibility lasts for several days. I can’t rely on you all the time. Besides… balancing pheromones between two people takes a lot of mental effort. You don’t have to go that far for me…”
Excuse after excuse tumbled out of her mouth in an attempt to keep her fraying sanity intact. Before she could finish, Chi Yue Jing suddenly pulled her into her arms.
“You’re saying all that like you think I won’t be able to handle it,” she said with a soft smile, looking down at the reddening tips of Gu Jin Xiao’s ears. “Don’t worry. Try me…”
The sudden movement made Gu Jin Xiao widen her eyes in shock. In the next moment, Chi Yue Jing’s pheromones engulfed her like a wave.
A cool touch pressed against her back—it was the ceramic finish of the central island. Chi Yue Jing held her gently, letting her lean into her embrace so she wouldn’t fall. Gu Jin Xiao felt her cheek press against her shoulder, and that warm, fragrant pheromone scent wrapped around her like floating in the clouds.
The embrace lasted a long time. As soon as the first wisp of another Alpha’s pheromones entered her breath, Gu Jin Xiao melted completely, her instincts overtaking her rationality. She reached out eagerly and let out a soft sigh.
She convinced herself that this was something the other person had offered willingly. Besides, she was just smelling her pheromones. Last time when Chi Yue Jing was in heat, she had taken care of her too—so if you looked at it as mutual help… there was nothing wrong with this at all.
Under that self-reassurance, her tense nerves gradually relaxed.
Chi Yue Jing lowered her lashes, gazing at the person in her arms. Earlier, Gu Jin Xiao hadn’t had time to dry her hair while rushing to find suppressants. Her damp strands clung to their necks, releasing a faint fragrance—like a dense, blossoming forest blooming between their entwined bodies.
She stood silently for a long time. Eventually, she heard Gu Jin Xiao let out a small, content sigh.
The sound fell gently against her ears like a soft drizzle. She refocused and, sure enough, saw the girl in her arms stir. A fuzzy little head peeked up and looked at her with a touch of satisfaction.
“I… I feel much better now.”
Gu Jin Xiao sniffled, wriggling out of her arms. Her long lashes trembled slightly, still a little embarrassed. “…Thank you.”
She had clearly told herself to only take a few breaths and let go, but before she knew it, she’d nearly gotten addicted. The Alpha’s instincts were simply too overpowering. There had been a moment where she almost couldn’t hold back the urge to bite her neck.
Compared to her flustered state, Chi Yue Jing looked much more composed. She calmly lowered her gaze and said, “You’re welcome. Since you’re alright now, I’ll go downstairs and reheat the soup. Come eat after you’ve freshened up.”
Gu Jin Xiao softly replied, “Okay,” her eyes following her as she walked away. Maybe it was the lingering effect of the pheromones, but the moment she watched her walk out of the room, a wave of reluctance surged in her heart—she really wanted… to pull her back.
This terrifying nesting instinct made her uneasy. She patted her chest lightly and decided to take another shower.
They had delayed for too long. By the time they finally sat down for dinner, the sky outside was already mostly dark.
Chi Yue Jing reheated the coconut chicken soup and served a bowl for her. “You sweated a lot just now, so you need to replenish your fluids.”
The soup in the bowl was clear and golden, with chunks of white coconut flesh bobbing gently—like crescent moons reflected in water. But to Gu Jin Xiao, the person serving the soup looked even more tempting than the dish itself. Distracted, she reached for the bowl and accidentally brushed against Chi Yue Jing’s hand.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She lowered her head quickly, pretending to be in a rush to drink the soup. But the moment it entered her mouth, she let out a muffled “Mmm!”—brows furrowing as her eyes instantly turned red.
“It’s so hot—!”
Chi Yue Jing hadn’t had time to warn her when she saw tears well up in her eyes. Her pink lips parted as she panted softly, looking utterly pitiful.
“Let me see.” Worried she had burned herself badly, Chi Yue Jing quickly stood and walked over. She cupped her face with concern. “Did it burn your tongue?”
Gu Jin Xiao felt her whole mouth tingle from the scalding pain. Hearing the question, she instinctively opened her mouth like a little kid at the dentist, going “Ahh” for her to check.
Tears clung to her lashes, making her eyes look crystal clear like they’d been washed with water. Chi Yue Jing only needed a glance before lowering her eyes. She steadied her emotions and carefully examined her soft lips and the shyly hidden, pink and adorable tongue tip nestled between her teeth.
They were so close their breaths intermingled, and as the familiar pheromone scent filled her nose again, Gu Jin Xiao’s body froze.
She couldn’t move at all. In her vision was Chi Yue Jing’s face coming closer—her dark eyes as deep as ink, filled with gentle light, giving her the illusion she was about to be drawn in.
Though she had just been comforted by that scent, now her mind was filled again with the white iris fragrance and the warmth of being in her arms.
Her gaze lingered, unable to resist peeking at her collarbone. One of Chi Yue Jing’s shirt buttons had come undone—probably during the hug earlier—exposing a smooth collarbone that caught her eye. Gu Jin Xiao suddenly felt even thirstier.
What made it worse was that at that moment, Chi Yue Jing raised her hand and lightly brushed her lips.
The warmth of her fingertip brushed against her lips, sending tingling shivers down her spine. Gu Jin Xiao’s heart clenched at the touch, and she subconsciously pressed her lips together.
But she hadn’t expected that Chi Yue Jing was reaching in to check her mouth. In the confusion, Gu Jin Xiao ended up… sucking her finger.
The scent clinging to her fingertips blurred her consciousness even more. Driven by instinct, instead of letting go, she bit down lightly with her teeth.
As the realization of what she had just done hit her, Gu Jin Xiao’s mind went completely blank. She didn’t dare look at Chi Yue Jing’s expression—her face flushed red hot as she hurriedly opened her mouth to let go.
But Chi Yue Jing didn’t say anything. She stayed composed in that same attentive posture, slowly withdrawing her finger as if nothing had happened. She casually pressed her lips and said calmly, “Looks like there’s no injury. Drink some cold water and it should get better.”
“I’ll get it myself.” This time, Gu Jin Xiao didn’t let her do it for her. The awkwardness was unbearable—her head was about to explode. She jumped up, grabbed her cup, and ran toward the fridge.
She was going crazy. She couldn’t stay in this room for even one more second.
