After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 32
Chapter 32: Her Selfishness
Morning light streamed through the slats of the blinds, casting a gentle glow into the room. Just beyond the wall, on the street outside, sanitation workers and patrol guards were already bustling about. Yet in the master bedroom on the second floor, it remained quiet. Gentle breathing could be heard from the bed, and beneath the sheets was a soft, feminine silhouette.
As someone who never missed her morning training, Chi Yue Jing was unusually still in bed. In fact, she had been awake for nearly half an hour, but her arm was being tightly hugged by another person, leaving her completely unable to move.
Gu Jin Xiao clung to her arm like a plush toy, sleeping soundly. She had excellent sleeping posture, her fair cheek resting against Chi Yue Jing’s arm. Her long lashes gave her a kind of innocent charm she didn’t have when awake. Her pajama collar had slipped, revealing the soft rise and fall of her snowy white chest. Chi Yue Jing could feel her heart rising and falling in rhythm with that softness.
For as long as she had been awake, she had been quietly watching this peaceful sleeping face, tracing the familiar features as if discovering new treasures in something already beloved.
It was a feeling called satisfaction—one that surpassed the joy she felt when she won an award at the school entrance ceremony, when her fleet was honored for military service, or any wealth or power she had attained.
Perhaps her gaze had been too intense—after a few seconds, Gu Jin Xiao furrowed her brows and shifted slightly, but still didn’t let go of the arm. She yawned, snuggled in a little more, and slowly opened her sleepy eyes.
Her vision was filled with a pair of familiar peach blossom eyes, and the air was filled with the scent of white iris and neroli. Her nerves instinctively relaxed, and she leaned toward the source of the fragrance again.
Wait… what was this?
Realizing that she hadn’t gone to sleep holding anything, Gu Jin Xiao suddenly became fully awake. She became acutely aware of their posture, and the extra pillow she had shoved aside during the night.
When did she sneak over to the other person’s side and take over half the pillow—and the person too?
“Why’d you put your arm over here?” she asked after a moment of shock, choosing to deny her own actions. “What if your pheromone concentration got too high and something dangerous happened…?”
Chi Yue Jing simply looked at her, the warmth of her arm disappearing the moment it was pulled away. That loss brought a faint sense of disappointment. Hearing this clumsy attempt to shift blame, she smiled and said, “I’ll be more careful next time.”
“There won’t be a next time…” Still lying in the same bed discussing this was too awkward, and Gu Jin Xiao quickly scrambled out, almost tripping on the hem of her nightgown. She steadied herself and muttered, “I’m going to be late for work.”
Chi Yue Jing kept her smile and followed her up, saying, “I’ll make you breakfast.”
Because they’d gotten up later than usual, she didn’t make anything too elaborate—just some simple pancakes made from eggs, milk, and flour, drizzled with maple syrup and topped with chopped berries. When Gu Jin Xiao finished getting ready and sat down at the table, a freshly brewed cup of milk coffee was placed in front of her.
While cleaning up, Chi Yue Jing asked casually, “What do you want for lunch today?”
Gu Jin Xiao had already thought about this in the shower and replied immediately, “You don’t need to bring me lunch these next two days… I’ll be a bit busy.”
As she spoke, she observed Chi Yue Jing’s expression. It wasn’t just about refusing the lunch—it was an effort to resist the temptation the woman herself brought. After all, the office was full of people. If her secondary gender symptoms flared up, she couldn’t exactly ask Chi Yue Jing to let her nuzzle into her neck like a cat, right?
It was better not to see her at all—to avoid the trigger.
Chi Yue Jing didn’t say much. After a few seconds of silence, she nodded lightly. “I understand.”
Her voice sounded a little sad? Gu Jin Xiao immediately panicked inside. She lowered her head and took a bite of pancake, then muttered softly, “…I’ll try to come home earlier after work.”
Even she felt the line sounded strangely intimate. She quickly swallowed the food, stood up, and practically fled to escape the awkward atmosphere.
Luckily, the bustle of the mining site provided her a reprieve.
The operations director—an Alpha woman with a powerful voice—had worked at Ten Cross Star for years and was very familiar with Gu Jin Xiao. Seeing her arrive, she enthusiastically brought out a mining diagram to show her the progress.
Just as Gu Jin Xiao leaned in, she caught a faint scent of jasmine. Her nose itched and she sneezed, quickly covering her mouth and nose.
The director looked surprised, then laughed, “Ah, sorry—my wife came to visit yesterday… I’ll spray some blocker.”
The mine was full of young Alphas. To avoid accidents, Omega family members could only visit. If Gu Jin Xiao hadn’t been so sensitive to Omega pheromones, she probably wouldn’t have smelled a thing.
She shook her head. “I’ve got a bit of a cold—don’t worry about it.”
She turned her attention back to the diagram. The mining of the Black Silk Ore was going smoothly and was expected to finish ahead of schedule, which visibly relieved her. She offered some praise and instructed that bonuses be distributed to the workers at the end of the month.
The director smiled. “That’ll help a lot. Water prices are going up again in the civilian districts. This bonus will make a big difference for them. Thank you on their behalf.”
The N92 colony’s water shortage was well known. Especially in summer, the government enforced tiered pricing, so civilians had to be very careful with consumption.
Gu Jin Xiao asked, “If water prices keep rising like this, how can ordinary families keep up?”
“That’s why the mole rats are active again lately,” another engineer commented. “Heard a few old mines in the East District had encounters.”
“Mole rats” were a mining-world phenomenon. People were hired at low wages to enter abandoned mines and scavenge for leftover minerals. Working in complete darkness, they earned their nickname. But this kind of unauthorized mining posed serious safety risks.
Gu Jin Xiao recalled, “I think the Gu Corporation has an old mine in the East District too. Make sure security there stays on alert.”
The team all nodded.
After wrapping up work and chatting with key personnel, Gu Jin Xiao returned to her office. Once out of sight, she let out a long breath—only to realize her arm was red and irritated.
Being bombarded by both Alpha and Omega pheromones all morning had taken its toll. She stumbled into her office, locked the door, and nearly collapsed. Barely keeping herself steady, she drank several gulps of water, gasping softly as she tried to calm the burning agitation in her body.
This onset was brutal… Red hives from her sensitivity broke out along her hands, and the itch seemed to reach into her very bloodstream, gnawing its way toward her heart. Gritting her teeth, she reached into her bag and pulled out something.
A shirt. A soft white linen shirt, glowing in the sunlight like it had wings. She shook it out and buried her face in it. The scent of white iris rushed into her senses, instantly soothing her chaotic bl00d like an invisible hand.
Ignoring the shame of it, she took a deep breath—drawing out every last trace of fragrance like threads of cotton candy, hungrily inhaled. Then, as if regretting her own greed, she sniffed gently again, this time slow and careful, as though treasuring it.
Good thing she had foresight—while Chi Yue Jing was busy in the kitchen that morning, she had quietly “borrowed” the shirt and stashed it in her bag.
Just as she was drowning in the softness of that scent, two knocks sounded at her office door.
She jolted upright, hastily stuffing the shirt into her drawer. “Who is it?”
Her voice came out hoarse and soft, startling even herself.
A moment of silence passed. Then, Chi Yue Jing’s voice came through: “Jin Xiao, open the door.”
Chi Yue Jing?
What was she doing here?
Gu Jin Xiao nearly fell out of her chair. She quickly composed herself, finger-combing her hair and rushing to unlock the door.
A sliver of light spilled into the dim room. Chi Yue Jing stood backlit in the doorway, her tall, slender figure outlined clearly. She wore a white linen shirt, looking fresh and crisp, a small insulated container in her hand.
Those dark peach blossom eyes scanned her face slowly. Under her gaze, Gu Jin Xiao grew nervous. She turned away to avoid meeting her eyes. “Didn’t I say you didn’t need to bring food these two days?”
Her heart pounded so loudly it echoed in her chest. She almost thought Chi Yue Jing could hear it.
Chi Yue Jing didn’t reply. She simply placed the container on the lone desk and said calmly, “This isn’t lunch. It’s snow pear and white fungus soup. I thought something sweet might help since you haven’t been feeling well.”
As she explained, her eyes drifted casually over the desk. But then they stopped.
Gu Jin Xiao turned her head just in time to see a white shirt sleeve sticking out of the partially open drawer, waving in the air like it was mocking her.
Her face burned. She lunged forward to close the drawer—but Chi Yue Jing was faster. She grabbed her wrist with one hand and pulled the drawer open with the other, slowly lifting the “evidence” out.
She looked at the familiar shirt in her hand, then back at the blushing woman before her. Her eyes sparkled.
“Liar.”
