After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 35
Chapter 35: In Her Arms
The air conditioning inside was still running, yet Gu Jin Xiao’s back was covered in a thin layer of sweat.
Her susceptibility period had always been difficult to endure, and with work recently becoming overwhelming and chaotic, the heat felt like a fire ignited in her bloodstream — scalding and baking her from the inside out, leaving her tossing and turning.
She quietly shifted her body, lying on her back in the position she was most familiar with, and began silently counting numbers, hoping that the mechanical repetition would calm her mind. But after a while, all it did was make her even more alert — clearly not helping at all.
And right at that moment, Chi Yue Jing, who was lying beside her, turned over. Gu Jin Xiao glanced over and saw her turning her face toward her side of the bed, her brows and expression still peaceful and calm, seemingly undisturbed by any of the movement.
Seeing this, Gu Jin Xiao let out a slight breath of relief — but then immediately felt a wave of inexplicable frustration.
Why wasn’t she awake?
Normally, this person would always wake up at the slightest change — even if the air conditioning got just a bit warmer, or there was the tiniest sound, she would get up to check. But tonight she was sleeping so soundly… it almost felt intentional, like she was doing it just to spite her.
But, to be fair, she couldn’t really blame her. After all, she had made dinner today, and even drove all the way to the port to pick something up — she must really be exhausted.
Maybe I should just get up and take an inhibitor…
The thought had barely surfaced when Gu Jin Xiao immediately rejected it. After the “cat therapy” she’d been receiving from Chi Yue Jing these past few days, she truly understood what it meant to “go from luxury to frugality.” Having experienced the comfort of Chi Yue Jing’s soothing scent, the sharp, numb sting of an inhibitor now felt even more unbearable — just thinking about it made her feel worse.
Besides, she had to visit the mining site tomorrow. Taking an inhibitor would weaken her body, and if anything happened on-site, that would be a disaster.
Frustrated and torn, she unconsciously pouted. Her long eyelashes fluttered, and her fingers gently twisted the thin blanket, bunching the fabric into a wrinkle. After a moment of hesitation, she decided… to swallow her pride and ask for help.
“Chi Yue Jing…” After making up her mind, she scooted a bit closer to the pillow and softly called out.
The girl’s voice was sweet and soft, like a kitten tickling at the air, clearly tinged with shyness and lacking in confidence.
Maybe it was too soft, because the person on the other side merely let out a faint “mm” sound. Her eyelashes fluttered slightly before her breathing settled back into a calm rhythm.
Gu Jin Xiao froze. She hadn’t expected such a result after mustering so much courage. In disbelief, she blinked and simply reached out to poke Chi Yue Jing on the cheek.
This time, it seemed to work — sort of. Chi Yue Jing immediately lifted her arm and, without even opening her eyes, accurately caught the offending finger. She pulled Gu Jin Xiao’s hand into her palm and murmured softly, “Baby, don’t fuss.”
Baby?
Gu Jin Xiao was stunned. She didn’t know if this nickname had slipped out from a dream or was actually meant for her. She froze on the spot, dazed.
Before she could snap out of it, seemingly displeased by being disturbed in her sleep, Chi Yue Jing yawned drowsily, tugged a little on her hand, and pulled her closer in that position.
Caught off guard, Gu Jin Xiao fell straight into a warm embrace. Her body pressed tightly against the other woman’s soft curves, and her heartbeat instantly skyrocketed — pounding so hard it felt like it might leap from her throat.
Chi Yue Jing wrapped her arms around her like an octopus, directly looping around her chest and hugging her tightly like a doll.
But once she confirmed Gu Jin Xiao was securely in her arms, she let out a satisfied hum through her nose… and fell back asleep.
Left pinned and unable to move, Gu Jin Xiao parted her lips helplessly. The only part of her body still free — her leg — kept rubbing anxiously against the bedsheet, desperately trying to find a bit of space to breathe.
She was getting even hotter.
Chi Yue Jing’s face was buried less than a centimeter from her neck, and with each of her soft breaths, Gu Jin Xiao felt like half her body was going weak. That warm breath grazed her sensitive skin like an invisible cat toy teasing her, sending electric shivers over her nerves. She whimpered, her eyes brimming with indignation.
“…How could you still be asleep?” Her wide, beautiful eyes turned wet in the haze of rising sensation, as if she were being bullied. They glistened with tears, and her soft, petal-like lips pressed tightly together before she suddenly bit down on the arm in front of her. “You’re lying to me!”
Before she could land the bite, her cheek was gently pinched by a hand. Chi Yue Jing held her soft, delicate face in one hand, her eyes glinting in the dark. She chuckled lightly and said, “I’m just keeping our promise.”
They were so close, her nose almost touched Gu Jin Xiao’s face. That smiling expression was both heart-pounding and a little dangerous. One word at a time, she coaxed, “Tell me what you want, Jin Xiao.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s entire face flushed red. She stammered, unable to speak.
What could she say? That she wanted to be held? Or should she just outright say she wanted to inhale her pheromones?
Either option sounded unbearably shameful. Her mind was like a pot of hot paste, dizzy and sticky. She could only stare helplessly at Chi Yue Jing, her big eyes filled with grievance and confusion.
That look — no matter how many times she saw it — always made Chi Yue Jing’s heart flutter. Still, she hardened herself, putting on a matching expression of innocent confusion as she smiled and repeated, “If you don’t tell me, how will I know what you want?”
She deliberately said it with an air of seriousness and gravity — yet her arms still held tightly around that soft, slender waist, her gaze so intense that Gu Jin Xiao couldn’t resist at all.
“I… I feel awful.” In the end, she could only tremble and squeeze out a few words. “Please help me…”
The hand at her waist suddenly tightened. Chi Yue Jing’s smile remained, but her eyes darkened slightly. Her beautiful lips parted slowly. “I didn’t hear you clearly — say it louder.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s eyes instantly widened.
Is she… messing with me?
Before she could think further, Chi Yue Jing raised her hand to gently stroke her hair. Her fingertips brushed lightly along the back of her neck, and the strange sensation instantly made Gu Jin Xiao’s spine stiffen. She instinctively let out a soft sound.
“Mm…”
She twisted her neck in discomfort, every cell in her body trembling from the heat and restlessness. She curled up like a small, helpless animal seeking refuge, her eyes reddening in frustration.
Seeing this pitiful sight, Chi Yue Jing’s heart finally wavered. Her teasing eyes softened.
“Want a hug?” Unable to bear it anymore, she broke her own rules and offered gently.
Already pushed to the brink by embarrassment and misery, Gu Jin Xiao heard those words like a voice from heaven. Her body responded before her mind could catch up — her rosy lips opened, and she let out a sob.
“You did that on purpose… You heard me all along…”
She was pulled into that familiar and safe embrace, enveloped in the comforting scent of white iris. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she sniffled and protested softly.
But she didn’t notice that the smile had vanished from Chi Yue Jing’s face. Veins tensed on the back of her hand as she endured something — yet her arms gently patted Gu Jin Xiao’s back, as if she were carefully cradling the only precious rose in the world, soothing her with infinite tenderness.
…
On the busy construction site, several young engineers were resting under the shade of a tea tent, chatting animatedly. When they saw Gu Jin Xiao sitting silently nearby, one of them spoke up, worried she might feel left out: “Director Gu, wouldn’t you agree?”
Someone nudged her elbow playfully. “Though really, you’re asking the wrong person — look at how attentive Colonel Chi is! I bet just one glance from Director Gu and she already knows exactly what to do.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s lips twitched faintly.
It was all a false impression. Sure, Chi Yue Jing might look like the perfect partner on the surface — sending her to work, cooking meals every day — but in truth, she was so… mean. Constantly teasing her.
Just thinking about it made her cheeks warm again. The person beside her saw her silence and quickly exclaimed, “Director Gu! Come sit under the shade, be careful of heatstroke!”
That drew everyone’s attention. Someone even handed her a slice of chilled watermelon.
Gu Jin Xiao cleared her throat awkwardly. “…I’m fine. I just get flushed easily in the sun — no need to worry.”
Everyone laughed, the mood relaxing again. Then someone brought up a new topic: “Did you hear? A few days ago, a derelict mine in West City collapsed. Almost buried someone alive… These illegal miners really risk their lives for money.”
“Dying is better than starving, huh? If they can’t dig gold from abandoned mines, many don’t even have a way to survive… It all comes down to the system. If you can’t afford migration fees, once mining ends, you’re on your own. It’s brutal.”
The atmosphere grew heavier. As a privileged resident from a higher-tier planet, Gu Jin Xiao was born into better resources, better education. Even traveling to a remote colony like N92 was just a brief stop for her. But for the natives of this planet, survival itself required everything they had.
She was reminded of the charity foundation she’d been planning. It would be best to use the duration of this project to get the framework established. She picked up her communicator — and saw a new message notification pop up.
It was from Chi Yue Jing.
Didn’t we just talk this morning?
A subtle, almost imperceptible smile tugged at her lips. She backed out of her contacts, just about to open the message — when a figure came rushing onto the site, face anxious.
“Director Gu! There’s something urgent I need to report!”
