Chapter 38: The Truth Is True
Watching that Alpha, who carried the air of a drill instructor, jump down into the mine, Ding Yao’s eyes revealed a trace of admiration. As a former military academy student, she could tell how precise and elegant the woman’s movements were — the way she pulled the descent rope was like a taut bowstring, filled with decisive strength.
She had to hurry down too — to help President Gu!
That thought alone instantly reignited her fighting spirit. She picked up her tool bag and was just about to get up when she suddenly heard the faint sound of sobbing.
The crying came from a young girl, who was clutching tightly the little girl that had just been rescued. Her large eyes were brimming with tears as she kept calling the girl’s name over and over. Nearby, the staff were anxiously contacting emergency services. Amid the chaos, the two girls’ figures appeared particularly helpless and vulnerable.
Having met the little girl briefly before, Ding Yao couldn’t help but slow her steps. She walked over and took a tissue from her pocket, handing it to the older girl gently. “…She woke up once underground and was still able to speak clearly. Don’t worry too much. I believe she’s going to be okay.”
Kasha hadn’t reacted at first, but upon hearing a warm voice behind her, she turned around in a daze — only to meet a pair of bright green eyes. A tall girl dressed in black camo stood there, watching her with concern.
“…I’m sorry,” Kasha instinctively took the tissue, finally piecing her scattered thoughts together. Once she processed what was said, her eyes widened. “I haven’t even had the chance to thank you yet! You’re the one who carried Lili up earlier… I’ve been so rude.”
Just as she was about to give a formal bow, Ding Yao was startled and quickly waved her hands to stop her. “The one who rescued your sister was President Gu. If you want to thank someone, thank her later.”
As she said that, she couldn’t help glancing at her again — and her face, unnoticed by herself, began to heat up slightly.
Kasha fell silent for a moment before saying, “I want to thank all of you. If you hadn’t shown up in time…” Her voice faltered. The water in her large eyes shimmered even more. “…It’s all my fault. If only I had noticed sooner…”
It was all because she still held onto unrealistic hope, trusting those irresponsible parents too much.
Though she hadn’t been on N92 for long, Ding Yao had already heard plenty about the kinds of hardships the locals endured just to survive. She wasn’t sure what to say that would actually comfort the girl in front of her. Her lips moved slightly, and finally she said, “She’ll be okay.”
It sounded dry — even she could tell it wasn’t very helpful — so she quickly turned and said, “Don’t you have another sister still down there? I’ll go down and help find her. Don’t worry, everyone is searching. We’ll definitely find her.”
Kasha looked at her profile, and it felt like something heavy inside her heart had been slightly lifted — as if, in a sealed, dark room, a clear beam of sunlight had just broken through.
She smiled faintly in gratitude.
“You stay safe too,” she said. “I’m Kasha. Thank you, all of you, truly.”
Inside the mine.
A sharp beam of light cut into the depths. Gu Jin Xiao held a flashlight, her gaze sharp as she surveyed the surrounding environment. The silence was absolute — the darkness pressing in like a coiled net, waiting to strike — but she remained unaffected, continuing forward step by step.
She was exploring a narrow rest tunnel. Earlier, they had found Lili in a pit, and that made her wonder if other parts of this tunnel might also hold secrets. The areas marked as dead ends on the map might not be as sealed as they appeared — she needed to verify that firsthand.
After only a few minutes of walking, she suddenly heard footsteps from a distance — and voices.
At first, she was relieved. But just as she was about to turn around, she froze.
That direction… there wasn’t supposed to be a path there, not according to the map.
Alarm bells rang in her head. Without hesitation, she switched off her flashlight and quickly ducked to the side of the tunnel, pressing herself silently against the wall.
The footsteps got closer. Sure enough, they weren’t familiar. One rough male voice said impatiently,
“If we can’t find them, forget it. Those kids trapped in here will die eventually anyway.”
Another voice chimed in, sharp and grating like nails on glass.
“Eventually? If you hadn’t botched the job, would I be here cleaning up your mess? You think the Gu family is as easy to fool as other mine owners? Hmph. Someone could be coming down any minute.”
After a moment’s silence, the rougher man said,
“…Kun-ge, don’t be mad. I threw the little one down the shaft — she’s probably dead. The older one ran west. Should we split up?”
“Of course. Get the older one first. The one who can talk is the real problem…”
Their voices faded, but what they revealed was enough to make Gu Jin Xiao’s bl00d run cold.
This wasn’t just an accident — they intended to kill the children.
She couldn’t alert anyone now, so she remained still, breath held, pressed against the rock, waiting for them to pass.
But just then — a sudden flash of light shot across the tunnel, right toward where she was hiding.
“Who’s there?”
The voice boomed. Her heart sank instantly.
As the flashlight beam moved closer, it began to illuminate the ground beneath her feet.
I can’t be caught.
She crouched down and in one swift motion turned her own flashlight to its brightest setting — blasting the light straight at the source.
The sudden flare of light stunned the men, buying her just a few seconds. In that sliver of time, Gu Jin Xiao launched herself forward like an arrow, ducking low and sprinting past them in a blur.
“Stop right there!”
The two men cursed, scrambling to chase after her. Chaos erupted in the cramped tunnel, the beams of their flashlights swinging wildly. Footsteps pounded behind her, loud breathing mixed with the sound of pursuit.
Gu Jin Xiao ran with everything she had, darting through the rocky corridors. Without her map, she quickly lost orientation and stumbled into an unfamiliar side path. Jagged rocks tore at her skin as she brushed past them.
The men stayed hot on her trail. Her heart pounded faster, and she began tasting bl00d in her breath.
Will they catch me?
The thought appeared for a second before she crushed it. Just then, a strange wind-like noise came from behind her — something struck her back, and she lost balance, crashing hard onto the uneven ground.
Pain shot up from her ankle like fire. Gritting her teeth, she tried to stand — but a cold voice stopped her.
“Don’t move. Next one’s a real particle shot.”
They brought high-powered weapons?!
Her heart plummeted. Alone in this unfamiliar tunnel, the chance of security finding her soon was nearly zero. She was outnumbered and outgunned — and there was only one of her.
Was she going to die here?
She stared straight at the men approaching her, eyes burning, one hand discreetly moving behind her back.
Two lean, dangerous-looking Alpha men approached. One had a particle gun trained directly at her — clearly ready to fire at the slightest move.
“Wait!”
Gu Jin Xiao shouted quickly, her tone steady and rapid.
“Are you sure you can handle the consequences of killing me?”
The man paused, startled — as if he’d heard something unbelievable. He adjusted the beam of light, pointing it toward her face—
Bang!
Gu Jin Xiao had been waiting for that moment.
As the light shifted, she hurled her flashlight at them like a missile. At the same time, a deafening boom echoed near her ear.
And then—
From behind came another set of footsteps — faster than anyone else’s.
A pair of arms wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her swiftly to the side — and someone stepped in front of her without hesitation.
The flashlight rolled across the floor, casting flickering light — and in that glow, Chi Yue Jing’s familiar face came into view.
Her white shirt was already smudged. She carried only a flashlight and a digital map. Her long hair was tied loosely behind her head, strands stuck to her forehead from sweat.
Despite the tense moment, her expression was calm — cool as ever.
She didn’t even glance at the armed men. Her eyes went straight to Gu Jin Xiao, scanning her from head to toe, as if confirming whether she was hurt.
When her eyes landed on Gu Jin Xiao’s obviously injured ankle, her dark pupils narrowed slightly.
“You’re hurt?” she asked quietly.
Gu Jin Xiao could hear the shift in her tone — something she’d never heard before.
Chi Yue Jing, who was always calm and warm, now carried a pressure in her voice like a coiled storm. It was a quiet but overwhelming intensity. She hadn’t even moved — but anyone could feel she was furious.
Like a dragon guarding its treasure, finally opening its deadly eyes after sensing a threat.
The two men felt it too. The rough one barked,
“And who the hell are you? Trying to die with her?”
They had particle guns — two women couldn’t possibly be a threat.
They exchanged a look and raised their weapons, lunging toward Chi Yue Jing.
Gu Jin Xiao gasped, yelling,
“Look out!”
But Chi Yue Jing didn’t even flinch.
Instead, in that brief moment, she spared a glance at Gu Jin Xiao, and her sharp eyes softened — just slightly.
“Perfect timing,” she said, stepping protectively in front of her.
“Because I wasn’t planning to forgive anyone who hurt you.”
