After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 39
Chapter 39: Her Feelings
Gu Jin Xiao felt as if her heart had stopped beating.
In the center of the tunnel, two armed men moved in from both sides, closing in on Chi Yue Jing. The wind roared with the force of their charge, but the woman in the center remained completely motionless. She lifted her eyelashes and calmly met the attack head-on. Her right wrist flipped upward, catching the barrel of the gun held by the man on her left.
The movement looked almost casual. Her slender, pale fingers rested on the cold black steel — the contrast was so stark, it created an illusion: as if what she was holding wasn’t a deadly weapon, but a fragile toy.
Beads of sweat formed on the coarse man’s forehead. He tried with all his might to yank the gun back, but the barrel felt as if it had been welded into her hand. No matter how hard he struggled, he couldn’t budge it. A surge of rage overtook him. With a furious roar, he pulled the trigger.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Sparks flew as the gun fired toward the ground. The next thing he knew, the woman in front of him had nimbly leapt up. Before he could even register her movement, a dull, heavy pain struck the back of his head as if he’d been hit by a steel plate. He collapsed onto the ground, unconscious.
Chi Yue Jing took out the first opponent cleanly, then turned to face the other: a leaner, sharper-looking man known as Kun-ge. Compared to his companion, Kun-ge was clearly more experienced. His cold, calculating eyes stayed locked on her, flickering with suspicion.
“That was military close-quarters combat…” he muttered in disbelief, tongue touching the back of his molars. Tension lined his face. “You with the army?”
Impossible. For a backwater resource star like N92, the military wouldn’t waste the manpower. Unless… something had gone wrong with the deal?
As the thought crossed his mind, Kun-ge’s expression grew even darker. He raised his particle rifle. “I don’t care who you are. No one’s leaving here alive.”
He bared his teeth in a vicious snarl and aimed at Chi Yue Jing — but midway through the motion, his gun suddenly swung toward Gu Jin Xiao.
The sudden turn of events stunned everyone present. The moment she saw the barrel aimed at her, Gu Jin Xiao instinctively tried to back away, but she was already deep within the tunnel, backed against solid rock. There was barely any space to dodge.
The muzzle flashed violently — as if in slow motion — and just when everything seemed about to end, a figure appeared faster than the gunfire. In the blink of an eye, someone leapt in front of her. The familiar scent of white iris surrounded her, shielding her completely.
No pain came. No burning sting of a bullet. Gu Jin Xiao found herself enveloped in a familiar embrace, whisked aside in a swift motion. The gunfire stopped. Her knees gave way, and her cheek fell against the soft fabric of a shirt.
Thump, thump… her heartbeat pounded in her ears.
Chi Yue Jing had one arm wrapped around her waist, holding her close, shielding her entirely. Her hair had come loose, strands falling around her face like petals blooming from smoke and gunfire. The soft scent of iris lingered in the air. Her peach blossom eyes met hers — calm yet deep in a way Gu Jin Xiao had never seen before. Only after confirming she was completely unharmed did Chi Yue Jing visibly relax.
But Gu Jin Xiao was far more anxious. Thinking back to that moment when the gun had been fired, and this woman had thrown herself in front of her without hesitation — her heart trembled. She asked hoarsely, “Are you… hurt?”
Chi Yue Jing lowered her gaze to meet hers and shook her head gently.
Then she turned to Kun-ge, who stood by the tunnel entrance. Meeting her gaze, Kun-ge finally felt a cold chill run down his spine. He realized, far too late, just how badly he’d messed up.
The look on her face made it clear: she would kill him.
The realization made Kun-ge panic. Desperate under the looming shadow of death, he suddenly let out a wild yell and pulled something from inside his coat, shouting, “Don’t move! I’ll set this off if you do!”
He was holding a detonator.
At the sight of it, Gu Jin Xiao’s heart sank. She screamed, “Stop!”
Setting off such an explosive in a sealed mine shaft was obviously catastrophic. But Kun-ge had clearly lost all reason. His face twisted with madness, and his hand moved toward the trigger.
At the exact same moment, both Gu Jin Xiao and Chi Yue Jing acted.
Like a shooting star flashing across the night, Chi Yue Jing lunged toward Kun-ge, her movements fast as lightning. Within seconds, she was in front of him, her hand slamming down with thunderous force. Simultaneously, Gu Jin Xiao pulled up her sleeve, held her breath, and fired the hidden dart gun from her wrist — hitting the hand reaching for the detonator dead-on.
Kun-ge was struck from both sides, flying five or six meters before crashing down. His ribs fractured from the impact. Bl00d sprayed from his mouth as he glared venomously at the woman he had once underestimated.
His hand, still clutching the detonator, had been pierced through. Useless now. He let out a gurgling sound as he lay on the ground, struggling in vain.
BOOM——
Just as Chi Yue Jing reached for the detonator — everything changed.
A strange rumble echoed through the mine. It sounded like thunder rolling overhead, growing louder, deeper. Then came the falling dirt and debris.
No — the tunnel was collapsing!
The ground shook violently. The entire shaft began to tremble. Chi Yue Jing turned around — and what she saw made her mind go blank.
No hesitation. She dropped Kun-ge and ran toward Gu Jin Xiao.
“Run, now!” she shouted, doubling back, which to Gu Jin Xiao made no sense at all. The walls were cracking, stones raining down. Just ahead of where Chi Yue Jing had stood was another exit tunnel. With her agility… she could’ve escaped.
But instead, she had turned back — as if blind to the crumbling ceiling overhead — running toward her without a second thought.
The earth shook violently.
The whole tunnel was coming down. Chi Yue Jing reached Gu Jin Xiao’s side and, just like she had countless times before, wrapped her arms around her, holding her close.
As the world crumbled, Gu Jin Xiao instinctively closed her eyes. Dust choked her lungs, her chest heaving in pain. Her cheek rested against a warm surface. She clung tightly in return, biting her lip hard.
In that moment — even on the edge of death — she felt an overwhelming calm.
This woman… she could’ve escaped.
The ground split open beneath their feet. With nowhere left to run, the two of them fell into darkness.
…
A drop of water dripped from a crack in the rock above, landing softly on her lashes.
Gu Jin Xiao slowly opened her eyes, the first thing she sensed… was the faint scent of white iris. In the dirt- and bl00d-scented air, that fragrance felt like sunlight pouring through the dust. Her memories surged back.
“Chi Yue Jing!” she cried out.
When the tunnel collapsed, the wall had caved in directly onto their part of the shaft. Chi Yue Jing had shielded her with her body, taking most of the impact, and both of them had fallen into a deep crevice.
Struggling, Gu Jin Xiao reached out — her fingers brushed against something warm. She turned her head in panic and saw Chi Yue Jing lying not far away, bl00d smeared across her forehead, hair matted down, eyes closed. She lay motionless… except her right hand still gripped Gu Jin Xiao’s fingers tightly.
At that moment, Gu Jin Xiao felt her heart shatter.
She dragged herself over, gently touching Chi Yue Jing’s face. Her hair was stuck with bl00d — afraid of hurting her, she brushed it aside ever so carefully. As she did, tears silently fell.
This woman loved being clean… yet always ended up in this kind of state because of her.
As if sensing her distress, the woman moved. Her soft peach blossom eyes slowly opened.
Her gaze lingered on Gu Jin Xiao’s face before settling on her tear-filled eyes. In a hoarse voice, she asked, “Did you get hurt?”
She was the one injured far worse — yet acted like she couldn’t feel it at all, only looking at Gu Jin Xiao, making sure she was okay.
Gu Jin Xiao tried to shake her head — but her tears just kept falling. She didn’t know how to explain what she felt. Instead, she buried her face into Chi Yue Jing’s chest, wrapping her arms gently around her waist. “You scared me to death.”
She had so much to say, but no words came. All she could see in her mind was this woman’s face — the way her eyes always looked at her, gentle and radiant like moonlight, quietly exposing every hidden emotion she’d tried to bury.
A few seconds passed. Then she felt Chi Yue Jing move, gently stroking her hair. Gu Jin Xiao looked up, confused, and met her gaze.
Neither of them moved for a while. Then Chi Yue Jing slowly lowered her head — and gently kissed the corner of her lips.
It was a fleeting kiss, soft and warm, like a butterfly fluttering against her skin, stirring something deep and tender.
“Chi Yue Jing…” her heart trembled as she whispered her name.
That voice seemed to trigger something. The kiss paused for a breath — and then those lips returned, capturing hers in full.
This time, she kissed with deliberate care, savoring every sweetness.
Their breaths tangled. The rich scent of iris flooded her senses, boiling through her bloodstream. The kiss was gentle but fervent, filled with something precious, something being proven and treasured.
Gu Jin Xiao began to tremble. Her mind exploded in fireworks — colors bursting into white-hot sparks. Her thoughts went blank. The kiss was overwhelming, but impossibly tender. She panted softly, fingers clutching tightly at the warm fabric.
Her heart pounded like a drum. She felt like she was falling — melting into that sea of white iris.
“Jin Xiao…” Chi Yue Jing’s voice was warm as flowing water, soft against her ear. “Thank you for being safe.”
