Chapter 42: Kiss You Thousands
Gu Jin Xiao froze.
She’d never heard Chi Yue Jing say it so directly before.
Her mind went blank for a moment, and then, completely flustered, she stiffened and ducked her head in a panic, afraid to meet Chi Yue Jing’s eyes. Her voice trembled slightly as she asked, “When… when did it start?”
Chi Yue Jing smiled. “A long time ago. Back when you didn’t remember me yet.”
Gu Jin Xiao blinked, startled. “That early?”
“Mm.” Chi Yue Jing gently pulled her closer, resting her cheek against the top of her head. “You might’ve forgotten everything, but I never did. That night in the rain, I carried you out of the ruins, holding you the whole way. You were so small back then, eyes red from crying — but you still tried to comfort the other kids.”
“You were clearly scared too… but you held it in for everyone else.”
“I thought then — you were the bravest person I’d ever met.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s eyes slowly widened. Her body, cradled in Chi Yue Jing’s arms, trembled slightly, but she didn’t pull away.
She remembered the orphanage collapsing. The smell of wet concrete. The sharp sting of dust in her eyes. And someone’s arms, warm and secure, holding her tightly through the chaos.
She’d forgotten the face for years.
But now, it was slowly coming back into focus.
Chi Yue Jing stroked her hair again and whispered, “I came back to N92 for you.”
“I asked around everywhere, trying to find the little girl who’d grabbed my hand and whispered, ‘Don’t be afraid.’ I didn’t expect you to grow up to be this tough Director Gu who barely ever looked at me.”
Her voice turned playful.
“But even then, I wanted to be near you. Wanted to protect you. I joined the local garrison, worked hard for every promotion, just to stay by your side a little longer.”
Gu Jin Xiao felt like her entire body had melted into the warmth of those words. Her throat tightened. She sniffled and asked in a very small voice, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want to pressure you.” Chi Yue Jing kissed her hair gently. “You never owed me anything. I only wanted you to be happy.”
“I figured… if there came a day you remembered me, and you happened to feel the same — that’d be enough.”
“And if not… at least I’d done everything I could.”
Gu Jin Xiao couldn’t take it anymore.
She buried her face in Chi Yue Jing’s shoulder and cried openly, the floodgates finally breaking. Her fingers clutched at the fabric of Chi Yue Jing’s hospital gown, knuckles white, as if holding on could make up for all the years lost.
After a long while, her sobs quieted. She lifted her head, eyes still glistening with tears, and looked at the woman in front of her.
“I do remember you now,” she said hoarsely. “I remember everything.”
Chi Yue Jing was stunned. Then, slowly, a smile broke across her face — wide and radiant.
“Then I’m the luckiest person in the world,” she said.
Gu Jin Xiao wiped her tears, leaned in, and kissed her softly on the cheek.
It was clumsy and shy, nothing like the commanding Director Gu everyone else knew — but it held all the tenderness of someone finally returning home.
Chi Yue Jing’s arms tightened around her.
In the quiet hospital room, the late summer breeze stirred the curtains. The shadows of leaves danced across the white walls. And for a moment, time stood still — just for the two of them.
