After the Divorce, My Ex-Wife Suddenly Became an Alpha - Chapter 44
Chapter 44: Sweet Talk
Because of what Chi Yue Jing said, Gu Jin Xiao didn’t speak to her for the entire morning.
She huffed and wrapped herself tightly in the blanket like a cocoon, turning away without mercy. The sight of her sulking so adorably made Chi Yue Jing want to laugh. She reached out to poke the lump under the blanket, but only got a muffled “hmph” in response. So she scooted closer.
Gu Jin Xiao had planned to stay mad for a while longer, but soon after, the mattress beside her dipped as Chi Yue Jing moved in. She slipped an arm under her pillow, curling around her neck, and pulled both her and the blanket tightly into her arms.
Gu Jin Xiao panicked, clutching the blanket in both hands like a frightened little animal trying to burrow deeper: “No way—”
How could someone bully her like this?
Chi Yue Jing quietly stared at her blushing face, lips curving upward in silence, eyes full of tenderness. “…I just want to hold you.”
The morning light spilled over Gu Jin Xiao’s face and body, casting a radiant glow. Her head was tucked down shyly, revealing only the curve of her slender, delicate neck. Chi Yue Jing hesitated for a moment, but in the end couldn’t resist lowering her head and gently biting that snow-like skin.
She actually wanted to abuse her wish-granting privilege one more time, but seeing Gu Jin Xiao’s reaction—if she pushed too far, this girl might really run off in anger. Her swirling gaze dimmed slightly, and she decided to save the precious opportunity for later.
There was still so much time ahead; she’d use it next time.
Gu Jin Xiao shuddered from the bite, struggling to escape from the embrace, grumbling, “I don’t believe a word you say. You used up all your credibility last night.”
The more she spoke, the more embarrassed she felt—especially recalling how she had gone out of her way to study some “practical knowledge,” only for Chi Yue Jing to completely steamroll her, not giving her a chance to show off at all.
She hadn’t even been an Alpha for that long! She pouted in frustration, biting her lip, and flipped over angrily—only to find herself still trapped in Chi Yue Jing’s arms. As she turned her head, their eyes locked.
Staring at that handsome face so close to hers, Gu Jin Xiao’s cheeks flushed again. She quickly looked away and buried her face in the blanket once more.
But a hand gently cradled her face. Chi Yue Jing smiled at her, long lashes shadowing the glow in her eyes, as she asked softly, “Can I just kiss you?”
“No!” Gu Jin Xiao glared at her fiercely, trying to assert dominance through sheer attitude.
But fate had other plans. Just seconds after her stern rejection, a strange gurgle echoed from under the blanket.
It clearly came from the angry one—Gu Jin Xiao blinked, and once she realized, her whole face turned beet red.
She had literally sulked herself into hunger.
Chi Yue Jing barely held back her laughter, turning her head away to avoid looking at Gu Jin Xiao’s mortified expression. Her shoulders trembled as she reached over and pulled her stunned, frozen wife into her arms.
“My fault. I completely forgot it’s breakfast time. Want me to make your favorite pancakes?” she asked seriously, taking all the blame, her voice soft beside Gu Jin Xiao’s ear.
Gu Jin Xiao felt like she’d completely lost face in front of her, so she rubbed her head against Chi Yue Jing’s shoulder in frustration before reluctantly muttering, “I want crab stick scrambled eggs too. With two eggs!”
After washing up, she returned to find the dining table already set. Fluffy pancakes were drizzled in maple syrup; the crab stick scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection, the eggs half-set and creamy, mixed with shreds of crab stick and corn kernels. Fresh fruits were cut into neat pieces and piled on top of the yogurt, vibrant and colorful.
Chi Yue Jing set the utensils in place and handed over a cup of coffee. “Black coffee. I know it’s bitter, but I added extra honey to the yogurt. Drink this first, then have a bite of that.”
Gu Jin Xiao had a serious sweet tooth and hated bitterness. But since Chi Yue Jing had admittedly pushed her a bit too far last night, she was worried Gu Jin Xiao would be in a bad mood without some caffeine.
And if she wasn’t in a good mood… she definitely wouldn’t want Chi Yue Jing anywhere near her.
So she coaxed gently, “Be good, drink it.”
Gu Jin Xiao thought for a moment—she had to run around a lot today, and did need the coffee. So she reluctantly took the glass and chugged it like medicine, face scrunched.
Even then, the bitterness made her frown deeply. As soon as she put the cup down, Chi Yue Jing was ready, scooping a spoonful of yogurt and feeding it straight to her.
The cold, sweet-and-sour yogurt with honey instantly washed away the coffee’s bitterness.
Gu Jin Xiao swallowed, then stabbed a pancake with her fork just as Chi Yue Jing spoke again, “Eat slowly. I’ll drive you later.”
“Of course you will,” Gu Jin Xiao didn’t even try to be polite this time. She accepted the reality of her physical limits with some frustration, taking a big angry bite of pancake. “I’ll let it slide this time, but next time, you’re not allowed to be like that. My back still hurts.”
Did that mean there would be a next time? Chi Yue Jing stared at her plate, her gaze softening. After a pause, she murmured, “Okay. I’ll be more careful next time.”
Gu Jin Xiao choked on her yogurt.
By the time breakfast was over, it was already getting late. Gu Jin Xiao went back to her room to change. During her shower earlier, she’d noticed the annoying Chi Yue Jing had not only worn her out but left a number of marks—on her neck, collarbone, and chest, all dotted with deep and light red blotches.
Feeling completely overwhelmed, she tossed aside the lightweight summer dress she’d originally picked and grabbed a white button-up blouse instead, angrily putting it on.
The shirt’s collar covered her chest and neck, finally concealing the traces. She checked herself in the mirror a few times, satisfied that it looked fine, then picked up her bag and got ready to leave.
She had barely taken a few steps when Chi Yue Jing’s voice called out. She turned, puzzled, only to see Chi Yue Jing’s eyes land directly on her neck. With some hesitation, she said, “Do you want to change into something else? Or… maybe let your hair down?”
Gu Jin Xiao was surprised. Chi Yue Jing never commented on her outfits. Suspicious, she wondered: could it be that now that their relationship had changed, this woman was finally showing her bossy side?
Thinking that might be it, she responded firmly, “I have the freedom to wear what I want. Besides, this counts as formalwear. Letting my hair down wouldn’t look right—and it’s hot.”
Chi Yue Jing could tell from her tone that she’d misunderstood, but after a pause, she decided to just tell her the truth: “There’s still a… um, hickey on the back of your neck.”
This blouse had a high-low French cut—neat and buttoned up in front, but the back was slightly open, revealing the nape. Right beneath the delicate curve of her neck was a very visible deep red mark.
Gu Jin Xiao covered the spot with her hand, clearly wanting nothing to do with her.
But Chi Yue Jing didn’t seem to notice her glare. After watching her for a moment, she suddenly got up and walked over.
Gu Jin Xiao saw her approach from the corner of her eye. One arm slid around her shoulder, pulling her hand away and holding it, while the other arm wrapped gently around her waist. Trapped in that embrace, she was enveloped in the faint, clean scent of white iris.
“I’m sorry,” Chi Yue Jing whispered, pressing a kiss to the mark on her neck. “It was my fault. How about next time… I let you do it back?”
The heat of her lips on her skin made Gu Jin Xiao tremble, her heart thudding wildly. She wriggled, trying to get away from the touch that made her skin tingle.
“I’m changing clothes!” she protested softly, “I’m really going to be late!”
In the end, Chi Yue Jing carried her into the walk-in closet and picked a light avocado-green knit dress. It had a mock neck that covered her entire neck completely, hiding everything—but it was sleeveless, leaving her smooth, pale arms bare like moonlight spilling over jade.
After changing, she noticed Chi Yue Jing staring at her a little too intently. Her arm slipped around her waist again, making Gu Jin Xiao’s heart race. She quickly tried to push her away, yelling, “I really am going to be late!”
Chi Yue Jing, unwilling to let go, pulled her close and gave her another kiss before muttering, “Should’ve picked something less pretty…”
“Now everyone will see how beautiful my wife is.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s whole face flushed red.
…
After all the morning chaos, they arrived at the mine just in time. Gu Jin Xiao let out a long breath and opened the car door as soon as it stopped.
Chi Yue Jing chased after her with the bag she’d left behind and helped tidy her hair. “Don’t rush. Walk slowly, be careful not to trip.”
Her tone sounded like she was coaxing a child. Normally Gu Jin Xiao didn’t think she was this clingy. She took the bag and said, “Got it. Go home already.”
She turned and walked toward the office building. Even without looking back, she could feel that gaze following her. It made her a little nervous. Only after rounding the corner did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
But before she could fully relax, two familiar faces came into view. Kasha walked ahead, holding a folder, her ponytail swinging cheerfully. Behind her, dressed in black camo gear, was the calm and composed Ding Yao.
“Director Gu,” Kasha greeted her with a wave, sounding a bit concerned. “Is Colonel Chi feeling better? She said she wasn’t feeling well and left with you early last night. Is she alright now?”
Gu Jin Xiao was momentarily stunned. She didn’t expect that to be the excuse Chi Yue Jing had used. Caught off guard, she hesitated, then made something up: “Yeah, she overate and had a stomachache. She’s fine now.”
Kasha laughed. “Really? I didn’t think Colonel Chi—so disciplined—would overeat… What kind of food was it that she just couldn’t resist?”
She was grinning brightly, but Gu Jin Xiao’s face was already heating up. Only after speaking did she realize how strange her excuse sounded. She looked down awkwardly and mumbled, “Haha… yeah, right?”
What else could she say?
That what Chi Yue Jing ate last night… was her?
Next time, she definitely had to pay her back.
It was decided.
