Chapter 46: Helping Her Cover Up her Lies
Hearing that voice, Gu Jin Xiao snapped fully awake. She quickly sat upright, instinctively glancing first at Chi Yue Jing, who was sitting at the bedside.
Because Gu Jin Xiao was wrapped entirely in the blanket, Chi Yue Jing was now seated right beside the bed, holding up the active personal terminal for her. The two were very close, and the words spoken just now by Xiao Ding had been heard by her loud and clear.
Seeing Gu Jin Xiao’s expression turn strange, Chi Yue Jing assumed she was concerned it wasn’t convenient to talk with her here. So she casually grabbed a robe and said, “Want me to step out for a bit?”
This considerate, self-aware gesture made Gu Jin Xiao feel a pang of guilt. Without thinking, she grabbed Chi Yue Jing’s arm and shook her head gently.
She didn’t let go, but instead continued speaking into the terminal, “What exactly happened? Is the cargo still safe?”
On the other end, Ding Yao’s voice came amid muffled noise — she was likely looking for a quieter spot. After a few seconds, she finally replied, “Port One just got attacked. A space pirate crew launched grenades toward the warehouse. Security and mercenaries from various groups are on their way. The goods are still with me — safe for now.”
Gu Jin Xiao’s face grew serious. As she spoke with Ding Yao, Chi Yue Jing had already picked up her own terminal and started searching for relevant updates. Live news pages were syncing. She clicked into one image, where thick black smoke was billowing up from the port, flames lighting up half the sky.
When Gu Jin Xiao ended the call, Chi Yue Jing asked gravely, “The situation looks pretty serious over there. Are you heading out?”
She handed over the screen. Pop-ups kept flashing with new updates, clearly showing how far-reaching the event had become:

Gu Jin Xiao scanned the headlines rapidly. She knew Chi Yue Jing was worried about her. But Ding Yao was carrying crucial cargo. After a moment of hesitation, she said, “I’ll explain later… but I can’t wait. I need to get to Xiao Ding immediately.”
Even as she spoke, she felt a twinge of regret — she hadn’t explained some things to Chi Yue Jing earlier, and now it was too late to clarify. Just as her thoughts were turning chaotic, she saw Chi Yue Jing stand up.
“I understand,” she said calmly. “Don’t worry. There’s still a bit of time. Go get dressed — I’ll come with you. It’s dangerous out there right now. I’d be worried if you went alone.”
Not a single word of protest — just a smooth transition into accompanying her.
Gu Jin Xiao glanced at her, surprised. She instinctively pressed her lips together. She knew now wasn’t the time for talk, so she quickly got out of bed and began getting dressed.
On the way to the port, chaos had already taken over. Cars were fleeing in the opposite direction, while others, like theirs, raced toward the scene. Red emergency trucks with heavy-duty firefighting gear howled past, followed by armored vehicles rumbling down the road.
The situation was even worse than expected. As they neared the port, soldiers began appearing on the road ahead. Fluorescent wands waved in the night, signaling all non-official vehicles to move to the right lane for inspection.
Chi Yue Jing slowed and merged into the traffic stream. Most vehicles in this lane were journalists and cargo owners. A patrol officer was checking IDs one by one. When it was their turn, he didn’t even look up. “ID. Purpose.”
“I’m the manager of Cross Star. My cargo hold is at the front dock. I’m here to check on the situation,” said Gu Jin Xiao quickly, slipping a thick wad of cash between her papers as she handed them over.
The soldier pinched the unusually thick documents, finally glancing up and giving a slight smirk. “Boss lady, the port’s about to be locked down. Even if you make it through, all you’ll see is your cargo turning to ash. Worth it?”
Gu Jin Xiao remained composed. “There are still employees over there. I need to make sure they’re safe.”
The soldier had only been looking to squeeze a bribe, but now he laughed out loud. “A righteous boss, huh? You capitalists are something else. Honestly, I suspect you’re just trying to sneak inside during the chaos.”
He saw it was just two women, and decided to throw his weight around, raising his gun menacingly—only for a hand to suddenly reach out from the window and deflect it smoothly.
“Step aside.”
Chi Yue Jing’s movements were lightning-fast. The soldier staggered back two steps, caught off guard. Before he could even shout, the stern woman flashed a gleaming badge in front of him.
He froze.
Once he saw the insignia on the badge clearly, a chill shot down his spine. “…Ma’am… Commander…”
Chi Yue Jing didn’t say much more. Her voice was ice. “Let us through.”
This time, the soldier didn’t dare play games. He quickly handed over a stamped access pass. “Commander… the port really is going under full lockdown soon. We’re just trying to survive here… When the Federation troops arrive, they won’t be so reasonable.”
He looked genuinely pitiful. Chi Yue Jing turned to Gu Jin Xiao, who nodded without hesitation. Only then did she accept the pass.
The soldier quickly signaled, and a green light flashed above the designated lane.
They drove straight into the heavily guarded port. Patrols were everywhere. Giant mist cannons were spraying water at the fire. It was total chaos. They didn’t pause, heading carefully toward the cargo zone.
Along the way, Chi Yue Jing noticed Gu Jin Xiao gripping the access pass tightly in both hands. She seemed incredibly tense, whispering with Ding Yao on the line. This guarded, battle-ready demeanor was a far cry from her usual self.
But Chi Yue Jing said nothing. The car turned down a small lane near the docks. Towering cargo containers lined both sides. Sirens blared in the distance. Chi Yue Jing gripped the wheel as they wound around until—
“We’re here,” said Gu Jin Xiao.
They had arrived at a remote cargo unit. The place was eerily quiet, as if forgotten by the world. A single swaying lantern lit the ground in front of the door. Gu Jin Xiao approached with Chi Yue Jing, and knocked three times on the metal door.
It opened. Ding Yao’s face appeared in the dim light. She looked clearly disheveled — the result of a difficult hideout. When she saw Gu Jin Xiao, relief flooded her expression.
Gu Jin Xiao glanced at her and said, “Grab the goods. We’re leaving.”
Ding Yao nodded quickly.
When she finally stepped out, Chi Yue Jing saw what this “precious cargo” was: a small suitcase, barely 20 centimeters long, which Ding Yao clutched to her chest like treasure. Chi Yue Jing exhaled softly and turned. “I’ll go start the car.”
She still hadn’t asked a single question.
On the way back, the route was clear — not a single patrol. But just as they neared the checkpoint, Chi Yue Jing suddenly slowed the car.
“The guards up ahead have been swapped out,” she said, glancing at Gu Jin Xiao. “Can this thing be exposed?”
Meeting her calm, moonlit gaze, Gu Jin Xiao’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t said a word to Chi Yue Jing about what the cargo actually was, but the woman seemed unsurprised — even perfectly in sync with her.
But this question cut straight to the point. Gu Jin Xiao shook her head firmly. “No. We can’t let them see it.”
Chi Yue Jing didn’t ask anything more. She simply reached down, took the case from Gu Jin Xiao’s lap, and tucked it beneath the seat. Once that was done, she restarted the car and drove toward the checkpoint.
The guards had indeed changed. Chi Yue Jing said, “Wait for me,” parked the car to the side, and calmly stepped out, walking toward the soldiers.
Gu Jin Xiao and Ding Yao watched nervously through the window. They saw Chi Yue Jing approach a tall officer and say something. He saluted her immediately. After exchanging a few words, the officer signaled his men to stand down.
Ding Yao whispered, “Boss… you were brilliant to bring Commander Chi. Otherwise, I doubt we could’ve gotten the cargo out.”
She was full of admiration for Gu Jin Xiao’s foresight — completely unaware that Gu Jin Xiao was actually panicking inside. The look Chi Yue Jing had given her before getting out of the car felt way too familiar…
That kind of look — like a guardian seeing a child who just caused a mess, one they had to clean up first before scolding.
This woman… was she planning to settle the score once they got home?
Before she could figure out how to weasel out of it, Chi Yue Jing returned, calmly got back into the driver’s seat, and pulled the car away from the checkpoint.
Once they left the port area, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief. After checking with Gu Jin Xiao, Chi Yue Jing first dropped Ding Yao off at the mine, then drove the rest of the way home with an increasingly anxious Gu Jin Xiao in tow.
She hadn’t forgotten the suitcase, either. The little box now felt heavier than a mountain. Gu Jin Xiao carried it upstairs with weighted steps. In the closet room was a safe she had brought from the capital star. As she approached it, she turned to glance at Chi Yue Jing.
She was still as calm as ever. When she saw Gu Jin Xiao about to open the safe, she even respectfully turned around, intending to avoid seeing anything sensitive.
Gu Jin Xiao called out to her.
“Why haven’t you asked me what I’ve done?”
The question made Chi Yue Jing pause. She turned back, meeting her gaze with quiet eyes. “Because I trust you.”
The wind stirred the lace curtain hanging from the blinds. Warm light fell from above, wrapping them in golden hush. Chi Yue Jing spoke softly:
“As your partner, whatever you want to do, or whatever you want — I’ll support you. And when you need help, I’ll be there to give it.”
Gu Jin Xiao was stunned.
Ever since they met, she’d thought Chi Yue Jing was someone who lived by rules — someone raised under the strict expectations of her family, with clear-cut morals and unwavering principles. She never expected this kind of… bias in her favor.
A little flushed, she bit her lip and said, “But what if I did something bad?”
Her voice was a rare bit of playful whining, eyes glistening as she looked up at her, lips curled into a tempting smile — clearly promising a reward for the right answer.
Chi Yue Jing’s heart stirred. She leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her lips.
“Even if it’s something bad,” she whispered sweetly, “then I’ll just have to do my best… to make sure you don’t get caught.”
