Chapter 5: Reunited After a Broken Mirror?
When did that happen?
Feeling utterly shocked, the person in question lifted her eyes. Her long, fine lashes fanned open like the wings of a butterfly, momentarily hiding the flash of astonishment before she quickly adjusted her expression into just the right amount of feigned annoyance and cast it toward Chi Yuejing.
Chi Yuejing returned her a reassuring smile. “Be good. This is not the time to be shy.”
Shy, my ass, Gu Jinxi grumbled in her mind. Though Chi Yuejing was definitely a major pain, compared to the Interrogation Office, she still felt like the lesser evil. With that in mind, Gu Jinxi lowered her gaze and muttered, “…Got it.”
Ados, still suspicious, wasn’t about to fall back so easily. He shifted his gaze back onto Gu Jinxi and pressed, “Ms. Gu, from what I understand, the two of you haven’t seen each other for the past eleven months. I’m curious—what rekindled the spark between you and your partner so suddenly?”
It was a deceptively casual question, but clearly laced with malice. As soon as he asked it, the Interrogation Office officer fixed a sharp, piercing gaze on her, refusing to miss even the slightest twitch in her expression.
But Gu Jinxi was prepared. She pursed her lips first, then replied softly, “What you may not know is that I’ve always… preferred Alphas over Omegas.”
Her features were soft, not as sharp or imposing as typical Alphas. The gentle arc of her eyelids shaped her eyes like twin crescent moons, always looking a little like she was smiling even when she wasn’t. At this moment, such an expression made her seem even more bashful.
The unexpected answer caught Ados completely off guard. Not only did it silence whatever he’d been about to say, even Chi Yuejing herself froze for a split second.
It wasn’t until several seconds later that the officer let out a chuckle. Shaking his head, he swept his eyes back and forth between the two of them with a meaningful smile. “Ah, I see…”
“We still have other things to do today,” Chi Yuejing smoothly stepped in, subtly blocking his view with her body. “If the questioning is over, I’ll be taking her with me.”
At this point, if Ados insisted on keeping Gu Jinxi, it would be no different from declaring open war against the Chi family. He had no choice but to raise a hand in compliance. “…With Colonel Chi’s 24-hour personal protection, I suppose Ms. Gu’s safety shouldn’t be a concern.”
Still, he added one final note: “But due to the critical nature of the Wusi project, the Interrogation Office will retain temporary surveillance authority over all related personnel.”
It was the best compromise he could offer. Gu Jinxi, always one to know when to back down, nodded promptly. “That’s acceptable.”
With that, the locked doors were once again opened. Just as they had come, the armed guards escorted Ados out like a retreating tide. Gu Jinxi waited until they entered the elevator before letting out a long breath and finally relaxing her tense shoulders.
We finally tricked that god of pestilence into leaving.
Feeling pretty pleased with how things had gone, she straightened her collar and was about to leave the examination room too—when a hand stopped her.
“Why are you still blocking my way? Everything’s over now,” she said, puzzled.
Chi Yuejing’s expression remained as calm as ever. She held out her hand, palm up, and curled her fingers toward her.
“Add me to your car’s access permissions,” she said. “Since Ados emphasized ‘24-hour personal protection,’ we’d better strictly follow that.”
Before she could finish, Gu Jinxi’s face had already gone from spring sunlight to a winter chill.
“That was just to fool him…” she started hesitantly, tone laced with desperate hope. “We don’t have to take it so literally, right? This is the capital planet, and besides, I could just request my own Gu family security detail—”
She was cut off by a short, dry laugh. Chi Yuejing walked up and decisively grabbed her wrist. The skin where they touched began to inexplicably heat up. Before Gu Jinxi could struggle free, she was already being towed out of the examination room.
“If you don’t want the Interrogation Office to lock you in a hamster cage, you’d better behave,” Chi Yuejing said flatly. “Idiot.”
“…”
On the ride home, Gu Jinxi was finally forced to accept her new reality: whether it was the Interrogation Office or Chi Yuejing, neither of them were joking. Her only options were to voluntarily enter a military-monitored safehouse, or obediently play the part of a devoted, inseparable wife.
Rose walls flashed past the car window as the inner city basked under tranquil sunlight. Even though humanity had long since left the Milky Way behind, their deep-rooted nostalgia for their homeworld meant that all the major Federation planets still mimicked Earth’s day-and-night cycle by suspending twin artificial moons in the sky.
Gu Jinxi leaned her cheek against the window, soaking in the sunlight. It had been almost a year since she and Chi Yuejing had returned to this house together. As the white villa outside the window drew closer, her unease grew stronger.
Regardless of her internal doubts, once Chi Yuejing parked the car, she had no choice but to get out and follow. The moment she stood upright, that familiar hand reached out again, taking hold of her wrist.
“I’m not going to run,” Gu Jinxi mumbled, brushing her hair behind her ear uncomfortably. She snuck a glance at Chi Yuejing, whose expression hadn’t changed. Letting out a quiet sigh, she subtly tried to create some distance.
“Cameras.”
Before she could move, Chi Yuejing leaned in with hawk-like precision. Her grip around Gu Jinxi’s wrist shifted in a smooth, practiced motion, pulling her close into an embrace. Caught off guard, Gu Jinxi found her face and arm pressed tightly against Chi Yuejing’s body with no room to retreat.
Her cheek landed near the side of her neck. The familiar scent of white iris drifted up again, muddling her mind like a sweet, dizzying haze. Her face grew warm, and she tried to push away slightly with one hand. “What?”
Chi Yuejing looked down at the embarrassed girl nestled against her, lips pressed in an involuntary smile. “The cameras are watching us,” she said, voice unusually gentle.
“Oh,” Gu Jinxi said, realizing this was her cue to play along. Her heart thumped in panic, but she tried to stay calm. Carefully, her fingers slid through her sleeve to link arms with Chi Yuejing. “Then… let’s go home.”
“Alright, wifey,” Chi Yuejing replied with a smile.
That one word made Gu Jinxi jolt again. She shot her a glare, hissing under her breath, “…Chi Yuejing, can you not take it so far?”
“What did I say wrong?” Chi Yuejing replied innocently. “We’re both Alphas. I’m taller and stronger than you, so calling you wife seems natural, doesn’t it?”
“With all due respect, that logic is peak straight-Alpha nonsense. My third uncle’s girlfriends are all 1.8-meter runway models—does he call them ‘wifey’?”
“Pfft—”
Chi Yuejing couldn’t help laughing. But she didn’t press the topic. Instead, she gently placed her hand over the one hooked through her arm and said casually, “I don’t mind either way. If you don’t want me to call you wife, then you can just call me that.”
As she spoke, she leaned closer to Gu Jinxi’s face, inhaling subtly near her cheek as if savoring her scent.
Her hand was still wrapped around Gu Jinxi’s, warm and firm. The sudden intimacy had Gu Jinxi’s heart pounding. Flustered, she mumbled one last protest, “…I don’t want to.”
But with surveillance still rolling, her voice lacked any real conviction.
Chi Yuejing quietly took in the sensation of their hands pressed tightly together. Gu Jinxi was always polite and reserved, keeping everyone at a careful distance. At this moment, though, the warmth of their palms shared a rare intimacy. She allowed herself a few indulgent seconds before letting go.
“Let’s head in.” She opened the door to the villa, checked the surroundings briefly, and then held the door open for Gu Jinxi to enter.
The small villa had been a wedding gift from the Gu family. Since their marriage, they’d spent very little time living together. Chi Yuejing walked into the living room like she owned the place. Back then, Gu Jinxi had still been attending university on Chaoyun Star, so Chi Yuejing had overseen the interior design entirely on her own.
Soft whites and blues filled the space. In the center of the living room stood a graceful spiral staircase, with a platinum crystal chandelier dangling nearby. Chi Yuejing stopped beside the stairs. “Your bedroom’s still on the second floor, right?”
Gu Jinxi was spraying disinfectant into the shoe cabinet and turned back warily. “Why are you asking?”
“I remember the second floor connects to a terrace. That’s a security risk,” Chi Yuejing stated matter-of-factly. “If you don’t want to wake up one day with a laser blade at your throat, you’d better move downstairs.”
Gu Jinxi was a little shaken by the image. She thought for a moment before saying, “But I don’t think there are any extra rooms downstairs?”
“There’s one,” Chi Yuejing said slowly. “The master bedroom just happens to be on the first floor.”
